New Perfume Review: Parfums Berdoues Grand Cru Oud Wa Vanilia + Warm Smoking Embers of Passion Draw

Oud is a polarizing subject in perfumery. Some think it’s been over used, while others can’t wait for yet another take on it.  It is certainly ubiquitous in fragrance at the moment, and I can take it or leave it. (Pink pepper, on the other hand…)  I have a bottle of By Killian Pure Oud that I love, and it has more than filled the oud-shaped hole in my personal scent wardrobe. Until now, that is, because I’ve just discovered Oud Wa Vanilla by Parfums Berdoues.

Oud Wa Vanilla is part of the Grand Crus Millsime Oud collection, which is the newest range from a company that is over a hundred years old, and has remained in the same family for four generations. I know the house as the creators of some of my favorite florals, especially violets. When introducing the Grand Crus collection, Parfums Berdoues reminded us that “Not every wine is a Grand Cru. The same is true for perfumes” and they have done a masterful job with oud in this latest launch. Oud Wa Vanilla is one of three oud-centric fragrances that were created in-house and  debuted  March, 2016.  It’s my favorite of the releases and I think it’s a perfect introduction for those who may be oud-curious, because it’s beautifully blended with notes that soften what are often harsh edges in oud fragrances.

The oud in Oud Wa Vanilla is smoky, and its smokiness is not from a freshly started fire. This oud has burned all the way down to warm, smoking embers; it glows softly, enticing everyone nearby to come even closer. A slight trace of jasmine teases in and out of the smokiness, heightening the allure, and within a few minutes, vanilla starts to bloom amidst the warmth of the oud. The vanilla is rich without being sweet and adds even more depths of warmth and smokiness to the fragrance, provoking ever-closer encounters. Amber smolders quietly in the base; a seductively fragrant opiate, making certain that things will most definitely get out of hand.

Oud Wa Vanilla is a perfume that invites lingering, like the first kiss with a new love, or the hundredth with your true love. It’s also very easily shared between genders, and makes me think of gentleman gallantly offering his coat to his date when the night turns unexpectedly chilly. She lingers at her door long enough for the sexy smokiness of his cologne to combine with the sultry warmth of her perfume, and envelop them in a seductive elixir that will keep them both up the rest of the night.

Notes: Madagascan Vanilla, Jasmine, Oud, Amber

This review is based on a sample that was given to me by the always generous owners of Twisted Lily . Opinions are my own.

  • I am coming around to oud and this sounds very nice. i love the idea of smoke, jasmine and vanilla – and am interested in how the oud smells. Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US!

  • I generally don’t like Oud due to the harshness and that it never changes on me. It smells like rotting peat moss! From Tammy’s description this perfume sounds like the sharp edges have been removed and that’ll make it more sociable. I live in the US. Thanks for the draw.

  • I love vanilla fragrances and with a oud note this fragrance sounds amazing. I am not really a big oud fan smells to animalistic to me. I live in America

  • Richard Potter says:

This sounds like heaven. Beautiful review. I love the image of the coat exchange. I love oud and vanilla.

  • Well. this sounds right up my alley because I love oud and jasmine and it’s good that the vanilla is not overly sweet! I live in US.

  • I wouldn’t call me generally a fan of Oud. But I am a fan of vanilla. 🙂 What was most appealing in this review was the final paragraph. What imagery. US.

  • I like the oud scents I have smelt but probably have never smelt actual oud. Tammy’s review description of smouldering embers, tinged with jasmine and vanilla sounds wonderful.

I’ve been impressed with the Parfums Berdoues I’ve tried (I own Assam of India) and am interested in trying more from the house.

  • Well, I’m a huge oud fan, and so I don’t think it’s overused! I was alteady intrigued bt this line from your earlier post about the show. Oud and Vanilla. MMmm! In the US

  • Tammy review was excellent , especially with the jasmine teasing in and out of the smokiness. The vanilla sounds like the cherry on top. This is what brought this home for me: ” She lingers at her door long enough for the sexy smokiness of his cologne to combine with the sultry warmth of her perfume, and envelop them in a seductive elixir that will keep them both up the rest of the night.” I am on my knees praying that I win this one!! I haven’t met an oud fragrance that I didn’t love, so this one sounds amazing!! I live in the US and thanks for the draw!!! 🙂

  • I like some oud perfumes, others not so much. This oud and vanilla combo seems to be right up my alley. That combined with some smokiness and now you’ve really got my attention.

  • Lellabelle says:

Sounds interesting. I loved the femininity of the images, and the intricacy of the Moroccan designs. The idea of perfume grand crus is an excellent analogy, and I would love to sample something that its creators have distinguished in this way. I’ve not tried anything by Berdoues, and while there are a few oud perfumes in my home they are all my husbands – I haven’t yet found an oud that works for me. Perhaps this could be he oud that changes things for me. Please enter me for the generous draw.

  • Great review. This fragrances sounds very delicious and slight dering at the same time. I would love to try this fragrances. I never tried any fragrance from this brand but I’m looking for it. This brand has a great history in perfumery.
    I’m in the USA.

  • Gregorysop says:

It never ceases to amaze me when fragrance houses appear on here that I have never heard of yet have been around for a century or so. I have heard so much on this site about Oud, yet I have never owned, nor even sniffed a scent that had it as an ingredient. Personally, I am still generally stuck in designer colognes I can get at local stores since I can smell before purchase. I was trying to see if I was using my correct registered name for my email by emailing you, however, I have never gotten a response yet, I want to make sure it is Gregorysop or GregoryS…Please advise. Thanks

  • Tammy’s take on the fragrance is great. Especially the kiss portion. I personally am past my first kiss with my new love and my hundredth with my true love.

I have had thousands of kisses with my forever love! Thanks for the giveaway from the US

  • The imagery in that last paragraph is just gorgeous. Even though I’ve never smelled it, I feel like I can just about imagine it. I generally love oud, but don’t think every perfume line needs to have its own oud scent. That said, Tammy’s review really sets this oud apart from the crowd. Incidentally and irrelevantly, the bottle is also so pretty!

I’m in the US 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway!

  • With Oud I like many but not all fragrances that include it. Since this is touted as unisex I’d probably like it as I don’t prefer the “in your face” ouds. Tammy’s description has me wanting to smell what she smelled. USA

  • I am generally not a huge Oud fan, but I was sent a sample of the Berdoues Wa Ward and must say its a soft Oud, wearable, not harsh and in your face. The Oud Wa Vanilla sounds lovely, I also liked how Tammy said it not very sweet which I probably would appreciate. Love the bottles and the idea of it smelling warm and somewhat smokey intrigues me. I am in the US and would love to be entered, thank you for the opportunity.

  • Jasmine, vanilla and oude…. mmm

I really like oude, but I like how Tammy says its soft and wearable, because oftentimes I catchy myself not wearing overly earthy or dirty fragrances out.

    I’m in the USA.

  • Love the image of an oud that is burned down to embers and has vanilla with Jasmine. I think mum on wears the violette from this company
I would love to try oud wa vanilla
    Lovely review

  • Diana Devlin says:

I’ve only just started buying fragrances with Oud notes. The notes in this fragrance sound incredibly beautiful because of the addition of jasmine. I love fragrances that contain the note of jasmine, whether they are florals or orientals. I must find this fragrance in person to test. I really sounds gorgeous!
    I live in the U.S.

  • I’m not a big oud fan but this combination with vanilla sounds good. This line is next on my list to sample. I have the violet in the back of a cabinet. I’ll have to drag it out! USA

  • fazalcheema says:

I am intrigued because many of the oud perfumes focus on rose as the complementary note but here the focus is on vanilla and some amber. I only know of one another perfume in my collection which has both vanilla and oud as dominant notes and it is MFK Satin Mood. I cannot believe Parfums Berdoues is such an old perfume house. Goes on to show how many perfume houses have remained obscured despite having a rich heritage. thanks a lot for the draw. I am in the US

  • I enjoy a touch of oud when it’s in the background, but not the major player. This one sounds like a warm halo of a fragrance. I haven’t sampled anything from Parfums Berdoues, but I think this is a good starting point. I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • Le Parfum says:

Berdoues Grand Cru Oud Wa Vanilia sounds a very intriguing fragrance. The best part that is not the same oud rose combe that you get on every oud fragrance. This oud and amber combo with vanilla sounds so delicious and comforting that must be in my try list.
    I’m in the USA

  • Sounds really good, specially the jasmine , oud pairing along with the vanille and that is totally shared meaning is not overly feminine.
Like this review and also like the oud craze this couple years, i never smelled the real thing but what i tried and own i like the way they smell.
Some faves are Zegna Indonesian Oud, Dior Leather Oud , Armani oud royal
Thanks for the review and draw.
    I live in the US.

  • I have enjoyed the oud perfumes I’ve had the opportunity to sniff. 🙂 Usually I find oud/rose perfumes so this one sounds different! I’d it invites lingering, I’m in. I’m in the US. Thanks for the draw!
