New Perfume Review: Parfumerie Generale 7.1 Grand Siècle Intense EDP + Pierre Guillaume’s Modern Cologne Draw

There is something inherently pleasing about a good cologne, by which I mean the actual perfume genre that is a citrus-based, bracing, lightweight fragrance to cool you down on hot days. Since I was a kid and my Dad got me some 4711 to put in the fridge, I have loved that zesty splash. In 2005, Pierre Guillaume created Parfumerie Generale 7 Grand Siècle, homage to something that might have been created during the rule of The Sun King, and, nearly unheard of at the time, using all natural and mostly organic ingredients. This year, he brings us PG 7.1 Grand Siècle Intense, a modern reimagining of the original Grand Siècle.

One of the things I love most about cologne is its total androgyny. There is no gender bias when it comes to being overheated and needing to refresh oneself. Grand Siècle Intense definitely follows that rule. It is laden with bergamot and bigarade, two notes that are the olfactory equivalent of biting into marmalade: tart, bitter, tangy, but ultimately a bit sweet. This is all about the oil-laden peel of the fruit, plus a touch of lemon leaf to add greenery. As I sat and smelled the development of this perfume, I had a realization that this fragrance has components that can make a summer day smell hot, like hay, vetiver, and tobacco, but in this perfume they act as an antidote.

I went out with a friend on the day I wore this. The weather was fairly fine, slightly hazy but warm. My friend sells perfume for a living, so generally notices what I’m wearing, unlike my Perfume Muggle acquaintances, and he immediately told me how good I smelled and remarked more than once that this was a very good perfume for me. I agree. The snappy citrus notes are never completely eclipsed by the warmth of the heart and base, just made richer. Even after a good six hours I can still smell myself, which is great for a perfume structured in a cologne style even though this is actually Eau de Parfum concentration. I did apply liberally, as should be done for this kind of fragrance, Well done, M. Guillaume.

  • Love, love, love L’Ousieu de Nuit. It would be one of my top five perfumes. I would love to try this one because the image of an olafactory marmalade tart has my attention. Thanks for a good review! I am in the US.

  • My favorite PG is Bois Blond and would love to try this new one which sounds amazing for summer. I live in the US. Thanks.

  • L’Ombre Fauve is my favorite PG. I would love to try the new one; it sounds perfect for summer!

    Thanks for the draw!

  • I’m crazy for Coze and Cadjmere. Grand Siecle appeals to me because of the honey, hay, vetiver, and oak notes. Thanks for the generous draw! I live in the US.

  • Thanks for your generosity, Tama! I keep either 4711 or Jean Nate in the fridge during the summer and I would love to try this sophisticated cologne, especially as a hay fan. One of my favorite PG perfumes is Yuzo ab Irato which is fleeting but the mint makes it a summer staple.

  • I have been sampling this brand from time to time and love its style but never got into it too much. Recently I had the good fortune of acquiring a discontinued frag from this line and I also love their Isparta and Coze. They may be full bottle worthy. Im in the US.

I love classic cologne and it started with 4711 for me, too! I have never tried any PG fragrances! There are so many perfumers and they just didn’t get onto my radar until just recently. Must try! In the US still! Thanks for the draw!

  • This sounds delightful. I love this combination of light and dark notes. I am a fan of L’Ombre Fauve, would love to try this.

I’m in the US. Thank you!

Well the “oil-laden peel with the touch of greenery” and the “snappy citrus notes” just captured my attention! Citrus works really well with my skin chemistry and during the hot, humid summer days, wearing it uplifts and refreshes my wilting spirits…the mint and patchouli notes also sound attractive to me. Can’t wait to smell this! Live in the USA and appreciate the chance to try it. I am also enjoying the Matisse painting very much!

  • Hi, Tama,

Thank you for the lovely review. I want to try this because ‘colognes’ are my favorite type of fragrance. I continue to try to broaden my horizons, but always return to the joy of colognes.
    Thanks for the generous drawing.

  • I also have a bottle of 4711 in the fridge, which is so refreshing on a hot day. i have been looking for a long lasting cologne that will stand up to warm weather. This has peaked my interest with bigarade and hay. 6WZ9I am a huge PG fan but usually only pull out 3 in the warmer weather – Bois Blond, Bois Naufrage, and Jardins de Kerylos. This could.be a great addition. Loved reading about it! Thanks.

  • I would love to try this new scent from PG. I love citrus scents that have a strong base so it doesn’t disappear in 15 minutes, which is so disappointing. I guess that’s the point if being an eau de cologne. Anyway I digress. I love the notes in this one seems like it would stick around for a while. Lol I haven’t tried any scents from this particular line, although someone recommended Intrigant Patchouli but I’m kind of unsure about that one since I read a review on saying that the Patchouli was quite headshop heavy and intense . I’m in the US and thanks so much for the draw Tama

  • What can I say, I have a Thang for PG… Truly the notes in this one sound so inviting at this very moment and actually a bit healing. Thanks for the opportunity. I am in the US

I would like to try this because pg perfumes are so well constructed, and during the summer heat (coming soon?)? I will be craving a fresh cologne!

  • I would love to try it. I have fond memories of being allowed to dab on some 4711 on special occasions and have been a cologne fan ever since. I am in the US. Thank you for your generosity.

  • Oooh how lovely! Bois Blonde is my ultimate hay perfume. I love its depth and character and unsweet richness. I’d love to try Grand Siecle Intense because I love bergamot and hay and all PGs–maybe this could be like a refreshing citrussy cologne counterpart, to wear when it really heats up outside!

thank you fro the review and draw!

While I am a perfume muggle and have not tried any other fragrances from Parfumerie Generale, I would like to try this (liberally as suggested) for summer and maybe share with my husband.

  • I have fond memories of 4711 also. I’m interested in this as I would appreciate a citrus that doesn’t disappear on me after an hour or two. Thanks for the review and the draw!

  • I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with colognes. Some work wonderfully on me, but with others, the citrus can become stale and cloying on my skin. The composition in this one sounds very appealing though, and I would love to have a chance to try it. I am in the US. Thank you.
