New Perfume Review: Olivier Durbano Prométhée + Vision Quest Draw

durbano promethee olivier and bottle

Olivier Durbano and Prométhée Bottle

Olivier Durbano, perfumer, jeweler, and generally talented man, started his line of perfumes in 2004 with Rock Crystal, the first of eight perfumes inspired by natural gemstones. His ninth perfume, Lapis Philosophorum, was based on the mythical Philosopher’s Stone. Now, for his Tenth Anniversary as a perfumer, he is launching his Tenth perfume, again looking toward mythology. Prométhée is a fragrance inspired by Prometheus, who believed that without the knowledge of fire, mankind would not be able to grow, learn, and thrive (please see our press release for more detail on the mythology) The perfume is also symbolic of the Power of 10: 10 years,10 perfumes, the return to 1 to complete a cycle of renewal and unity.

"The Theft of Fire" by Christian Griepenkerl

Prometheus used a stalk of fennel to steal away some of the Olympic flame to give to humanity; Olivier uses fennel to enrobe the pulsing fire of Prométhée. This fragrance is blended so well, I can discern only a few individual notes. All I can do is close my eyes to see where this takes me, now that I have sprayed on a good amount. I do see that fennel-wrapped packet of fire, beating like a heart, but what does it want to show me? The visions I had, of a great burning hearth, myrrh burning on the mantle; to the white beaches of Greece and the sea smell and beautiful pebbles under my feet; to a walk through a colonnade of a temple, incense coming from inside, but flowers all around me, their aromas carried by a soft, warm breeze; and finally to my home. As I mentally digested what I saw, my first thought was to anoint my personal altar with this fragrance. I think Buddha and Guadalupe and Ganesha would like it. But then I was reminded that my spirituality is within my Self. Wearing Prométhée, to me, is not only wearing an astounding piece of perfumery, but a soul-searching and spiritualy uplifting piece of art.

Head notes: fennel, pink pepper, nutmeg, myrtle, olibanum, cistus

Heart notes: narcissus, Caucasian lily, lavender absolute, fenugreek, Russian sage, storax

Base notes: cedarwood, vetiver, myrrh, labdanum, ambergris, musk

Olivier’s perfumes are all interesting at least, and life-changing at best. They all have a commonality, a little of the same bloodline running through them. Prométhée shows a bit of a lineage expansion that was started with Lapis Philosophorum. For now, though, Prométhée will be sitting at the head of the family table.

  • Another wonderful review Tama! I haven’t tried anything by Olivier yet, but it’s definitely on my wish list (especially Turquoise.) I am enchanted by everything I read about these fragrances!

  • I haven’t ever sampled any of these perfumes. This one sounds good, I’m liking the image you got in your head while wearing this, Tama, especially the fennel. Thanks for the review and draw.

  • The sensual atmosphere of this review, along with the deep spiritual resonance the scent seems to have, makes this fragrance a must-try for me. Also, I’ve never tried a Durbano fragrance, and I very much want to! I’m in the US; thank you for the draw!

  • This sounds meditative, which I could use in my stressful life right now. I have not had the pleasure of trying any of Mr. Durbano’s scents, but your link to the turquoise review (MY favorite color and favorite stone) has me wanting to give that one a try as well. I am in the US, thanks!

  • I haven’t experienced any of Mr. Durbano’s creations, but I love mythology and would love to try this. I’m in the US.

  • I have not experienced Olivier Durbano’s perfumes. Chosen notes tied directly to the myth have me curious to try it. 🙂 US

  • I have not had the pleasure of experiencing Olivier Durbano’s perfumes as of yet. And to hear that a perfume is potentially life-changing, well – that’s a little intimidating. But I’m willing to take the chance. Especially for such a lovely inspiration regarding a stalk of fennel and mankind stealing fire! Wonderful story telling.

  • I find this line very thought provoking. Initially some of the scents start out challenging, but after a couple wearings, something just clicks and they seem like a bespoke fragrance. Black Tourmaline has been my favorite. It is so beautifully blended that something different emerges every time I wear it. One day ithe spices take center stage, the next day it is the incense and resins. It feels right but surprises my senses which is lovely. Beautifully written review, Tama. I am eager to try it. Yes, I am in the US.

I haven’t experienced any Olivier Durbano’s perfumes yet, but I am always adventuring into new territories so welcome the opportunity to wear something new. This one sounds enchanting. Love mythical and I also like the idea of closing one’s eyes (at least you did) to experience where this took you. I believe that fragrance should always be a personal journey first, and once you have had that journey you can then share that just by wearing it. It is something about the aura that carries the notes to the world somehow. So this seems right up that alley. Thank you for the wonderful review and also another fabulous draw. I’m in the US.

  • I have not smelled any of Mr. Dubrano’s creations yet, but I’ve only read good things about them – that I can recall, at least. One thing that resonated with me in this review was reading “I think Buddha and Guadalupe and Ganesha would like it.” That’s a tall order, to say the least! and then “But then I was reminded that my spirituality is within my Self.” really cinched it as that is how I personally feel about spirituality.

I am excited for this draw. Thanks very much. I am in the US.

  • My favorite among Durbano’s creations is Pink Quartz due to rose and saffron notes. btw, i have noticed one of the notes Olivier Durbano really loves is olibanum. Thanks for the lovely draw. I am in the US

I’ve not had the pleasure yet but everything I’ve heard about all the scents had been positive. This review actually had me smelling fennel and seeing the sands of the Greek coastline, so I had to comment!
