New Perfume Review: M. Micallef Pure Extreme Collector Eau de Parfum + Sparkling Rose At Sunset Draw

Martine Micallef has once again been at work creating elegant and timeless artistic perfumes for her eponymous fragrance house, M. Micallef. Our Editor in Chief Michelyn Carmen is a huge fan of the latest release Pure Extreme after falling hard for it at Esxence 2015, describing it as "a white floral with hints of amber that sparkled on the skin as the faceted charm twinkles on the exquisite crystal encrusted flacon." I've also been lucky enough to wrap my olfactory senses around Pure Extreme and Michelyn is spot on.

Geoffrey Nejman and Jean-Claude Astier have created a sheer yet vibrant and lively floral perfume with a deep, sensuously musky base that continued to delight me all day long and my husband long into the evening hours. With notes of rose, gardenia, transparent jasmine, amber, precious wood and white musk, Pure Extreme is white silk screen, splashed with luminous colour and lit from behind by a golden sunset.

I am extremely picky when it comes to rose-centric fragrance. Although I can appreciate many variations on a theme, I've finally concluded that I prefer my roses on the sweet side. I often catch a drift of perfume worn by someone else and fall in love, but become disappointed when it touches my own skin. There is a lady who frequents the shop where I work who is positively enveloped in roses every time she comes in. She smells divine draped in veils of lustrous petals and we've had many a conversation about which scent she has picked that day. I, however, smell pretty mediocre in all of her well intentioned suggestions. Pure Extreme has the perfect blend of unmistakable rose, fleshy gardenia and languid jasmine, counterbalanced with warm, sweet amber that REALLY WORKS on my skin. This is a rarity, (and at $535 a  50 ml bottle, with a backorder on Luckyscent, we see  we are  not the only fans).

Pure Extreme begins with dewy rose petals and fully blooming gardenia that has a rather steamy character; imagine a Turkish bath, humid and fragrant from the drooping bows that crowd the open windows. Some white florals that prominently feature these classic notes can feel rather solid, but as with Ananda Dolceanother favourite of mine, Pure Extreme perfume is painted upon a diaphanous canvas using bold strokes and bright colours. Pure Extreme may be a white floral in its note listing but for me it has splashes of pink and orange and gold, staining the skin gorgeously.

The amber and musks play a large role in the development of the fragrance, warming and sweetening the fragrance in the same way that a setting sun can burnish a landscape into metallic brilliance. The longer I wear Pure Extreme, the more subtleties I notice. Sometimes there is a slight fruitiness that reminds me of rose conserve, other times the amber is caramelised in the base, blending seamlessly with the woody notes to turn the fragrance almost edible. There is no denying that this is a sweet floral, although it opens with all the freshness of unfurling petals. The steamy, humid beginning drifts slowly into a perfect sunset, illuminating and gilding frail petals with precious brilliance. Incased as it is in such a gorgeous bottle, I dare any rose lover not to fall for Pure Extreme.

Disclaimer- Sample gratefully received from M. Micallef. Opinions my own.

Editor’s Note: Pure Extreme is part of the Collector’s Series and is not easily available to purchase. I used a lot of imagery of Brigitte Bardort to evoke the very feminine and very French sensibility of Pure Extreme. -MC

  • It’s a very nice review. I had never tried any of Micallef Parfums, but from the review Pure Extreme sounds fantastic. I would very like to try it. Thanks for the draw!
    I live in Europe.

  • Really nice review. I’ve never tried Micallef parfum.

I’m in Canada. Thanks for the chance.

  • I am intrigued by the note combination of rose and gardenia…one I’ve not seen before! My favorite Micallef of the few that I’ve tried is Vanille Marine. I am in the U.S. Thanks for the draw!

  • I have a hard time with big, bold roses, so a diaphanous version but complex rose really appeals to me. I live in the US, and my favorite M. Micallef fragrance is Black Sea. Thanks for the drawing!

P.S. Is the login box on your right website margin not working, or am I doing something wrong? I always get an error message about a human captcha code when I try to use it to log in, but the link you supply in the “must be a registered CaFleureBon reader” at the end of posts works just fine for me.

  • I am already a hardcore Micallef fan and this one is beautiful, I was lucky to have tried a sample and I am lemming a FB, truly a beautiful fragrance, dewy rose petals and full blooming gardenia, two of my favorite floral notes. On me the rose did not stand out but was rather subtle…and the musk they use in here is wonderful on my skin. And lets not even mention that bottle, pure gorgeousness with fabulous bling. Collectors item with a stunning perfume on the inside. I am in the US 🙂

  • I love the Turkish bath image conjured up, and I’m interested in trying more rose and jasmine. I am in the US. My favorite Micallef is Note Vanillee!

  • I have never tried Micallef before. This sounds lovely. I really enjoyed the review and the choice of photos. Thanks for informing about this perfume creation, and for the draw. I am in the US.

  • Susie wrote a very enticing post about Pure Extreme. And it’s floral. It’s no secret that I love florals, but they have to be well done and this sounds like it is. Wonder where the name Pure Extreme came from? I have not tried enough M. Micallef to have a favorite, though I am very fond of Guaiac. I’m in the US.

I not sure what wasn’t to like about this review. Now I have to have it! I live in the US.

  • I thought the notes sound gorgeous and I am always interested in a scent with longevity, given my scent-eating skin. My favorite M. Micallef is Note Vanillee.

I am in the U.S. Thank you for the draw!

As a lover of roses who’s been struggling for years to find just the one, this review is spot on for me. Every spring I get this huge craving for the perfect rose, and go on a sampling bender. This draw couldn’t have come at a better time, honestly. Also, I’m still very much behind on my exploration of the Micallef line. I have liked several in the past, mostly the seasons series, but haven’t sampled nearly enough to draw any big conclusions.

I’m in Russia, and thanks again for the brilliant review.

  • I loved the words ‘white silk screen lit from behind by a golden sunset’.
The notes of this fragrance sound much simpler than the scent itself and I would love the opportunity to sample anything by Micallef.
    I am in Australia.

I am intrigued as Pure Extreme may revoke images of gold but it doesn’t just come across as one color but multiple colors like pink orange and golden as if it is a rainbow of colors. my favorite Micallef creation is Sashka Black..thanks so much for the rare opportunity to try this . i am in the US

  • Languid jasmine and warm amber sounds lovely as a background for rose. And I love Brigitte Bardot! I don’t have a favorite Micallef yet, and I’m in the US.

  • I prefer my roses as a blend rather than a soliflore, so rose, gardenia, and jasmine sounds wonderful. I’ve never tried a Micallef before but I’d love to. I’m in the US and thanks for the lovely review.

  • Roseinrose says:

“Pure Extreme has the perfect blend of unmistakable rose, fleshy gardenia and languid jasmine, counterbalanced with warm, sweet amber that REALLY WORKS on my skin. This is a rarity” exactly this is what I am looking for in a rose perfume and Susie has given the best possible description. I have not experienced any Micallef perfume yet hope I have the chance to do so.
Thank you for this lovely review and draw as well. I live in EU.

  • Lovely review by Susie. I’m fond of roses in perfume, but like Susie I prefer my roses sweetened (not too, but just enough to counterbalance the freshness. Pure Extreme sounds like a fragrance I would love. As for my favorite Micallef fragrance I honoustly have to admit I didn’t try them all, but I do love Gaiac.

Thank you team Micallef and CaFleurebon for this lovely draw. I live in the Netherlands.

  • Dubaiscents says:

This sounds intriguing switch the Rose and Amber combo. I would love to try it. I really enjoyed their Perfume Couture scent ( the one with the lace on the bottle). I live in the UAE.

  • I had never tried any of Micallef Parfums, but I love this review. Carmalized amber in the base, woody floral, and I loved the wording of humid beginning. I am in the US and appreciate the chance!

  • I have yet to find a M Micallef that my skin does not love. This one has some of my favorite floral’s (Gardenia and Jasmine) in combination with an amber base which I adore. Sounds like a perfect beginning and sunset to me 😉 Thanks to team Micallef for this great draw. I am in the US.

  • Valentine Girl says:

I found the description of the amber and musk notes described as the setting sun burnishishing a landscape into metallic brilliance very appealing and would love to try this. I have yet to have the pleasure of experiencing any of the Micallef perfumes; though I have also really wanted to try Puzzle No. 2 ever since I read about it last year (in a Cafleurebon post of course)! USA resident and thank you for the draw.

  • Thank you for the review, Susie. I love amber note.
My favorite Micallef is Royal Amber.
    I’m in the USA

  • I find Susie’s visual of Micallef Pure Extreme “is white silk screen, splashed with luminous colour and lit from behind by a golden sunset” lovely and appealing, I live in the US and have not yet had the pleasure of wearing a Micallef Parfum.

  • I’ve not tried any Micallef scents – but I’m definitely interested! I love rose, gardenia, and jasmine – and I’m finding that though I’ve always thought I didn’t like musky notes in perfumes, that I’m drawn to that now. I would love to try this perfume. Thank you for the very generous draw – I’m in the US.

  • I am always drawn by a description of dewy rose perfume. And when it comes in a somehow disguised form of white flowers and amber, then it should be really interesting. I haven’t tried many of M. Micallef’s scents, but i love Sous La Figuier, which is one of the most succulent figs in perfume!
I live in Bulgaria (EU). Thank you for the chance!

  • The “steamy” character of the gardenia note appeals most to me. I love gardenia in the summer. My favorite Micallef is Aoud Gourmet. I’m in the US, thanks!

  • I think my favorite Micallef so far is Rouge No. 1, although I’ve really liked almost all of them I’ve tried so far. (Still waiting for that sample of Vanille Aoud I ordered nearly a year ago!) Vanilla Marine was not for me, but all the rest were lovely and easy to wear. I too often have difficulty with rose as a note, so I love the idea of a sweetened, ambery rose, especially one from a house I’ve had good luck with in the past. I’m in the U.S., and thank you.

What appeals to me is how the amber and musks will play a role with such delicate florals. I adore Note Vanille the best so far! I live in the USA, thank you!
