New Perfume Review: L’Artisan Parfumeur Explosions D’Emotions Haute Voltige, Rappelle-toi and Onde Sensuelle + Emotion is Color Draw

explosions d'emotions lartisan parfumeur

Last year, L‘Artisan Parfumeur launched a new series of perfumes, Explosions D’Emotions, with a collection of three fragrances by master perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour. Meant to evoke the range of human emotion, the series is expanding with three new scents, Haute Voltige (Acrobatics or High-wire Act), Rappelle-Toi (Remember), and Onde Sensuelle (Sensual Wave), also composed by M. Duchaufour.

Sometimes a fruity floral is made with such imaginative notes that it becomes a new category. In Haute Voltige, the decadent opulence of peony seems an odd companion for the tartness of pomegranate, but it works. The emotion of this fragrance is joy, and this happy combination will make you smile. As the scent wears, it becomes a little earthy, like a bit of the pomegranate skin was added as well as the garnet fruit. In the background, the floral peony adds her perfume. The components are doing a playful acrobatic balancing act of their own, veering from tart to sweet, making us oooh and ahhh.

Notes: pomegrante, black pepper; red peony, juniper berry, oakmoss, balsam fir and wood accord

"Remember" by Nicholas Roerich

Adding chili pepper to gardenia is a stroke of masterful dichotomy by M. Duchaufour. The spicy hot opening of Rappelle-Toi is nicely balanced by the sweet headiness of the gardenia notes. This perfume’s emotion is one of remembrance and contemplation, of sitting in the silence. After the snappy, attention-grabbing opening, the perfume does lead you to a place of stillness, the warmth of the Sichuan pepper embracing the petals of the honey-tipped gardenia. I can imagine sitting in a small outdoor shrine or temple, letting the perfume waft into my resting brain, and easing me into an easy meditative frame of mind.

Notes: gin, Sichuan pepper, gardenia, incense, sandalwood, musk, and honey

"The Wave" by Gary Shead

Created to capture the cool, then hot, unstoppable wave of desire, the effect of wearing Onde Sensuelle is one of experiencing a bloom of scent, like a puff of pheromones when there is high attraction, then the simmering undercurrent of desire that heats the skin and makes the heart beat a little faster. When first sprayed, Onde Sensuelle has an unusual tangy aroma that quickly becomes sweeter as it meets the plethora of spices. As it settles into skin, it becomes a soft, sensual skin scent meant to be nuzzled. The addition of juniper keeps the whole composition buzzing. Despite the plethora of spice notes, this never smells like a curry, but has its own unique, sensuous personality.

Notes: bergamote, grapefruit, jasmine sambac, ginger, cardamom, cumin, juniper, saffron, animalic musk, amber, and oud.

The packaging for this new collection is, like the previous one, boxes covered in an embossed velvety fabric, each perfume having its own pattern. The last boxes were creamy white; this time the color of the box is a rich fuschia pink, providing a modern twist to the opulent design, and playing into the tagline "Emotion is Color". I will be interested to see where L’Artisan Parfumeur continues to take this collection. When I interviewed L'Artisan and Penhaligon's CEO Sarah Rotheram, she mentioned that M. Duchaufour had delivered more than twenty interpretations of emotions to choose from; it will be interesting to see what the next selections are.

My samples were provided by L’Artisan Parfumeur. These fragrances will be available at select L'Artisan retailers beginning in April or May of 2014.

For me, l’artisan can do no wrong. So many of their scents are among my favorites. I really like the notes in Onde Sensuelle. I would pick that because of the ginger note. Love a little spice too. I am in the USA. Thank you for the draw!

  • I adore L’artisan – the gleaming jewels of my perfume collection are Fleur d’Oranger and Fleur de Narcisse. I find that the most evocative scents for me are unique and unexpected, and honeyed gardenia paired with hot peppers sounds like a thrilling adventure! I’m insanely curious about Rappelle-Toi. I’m in the USA. So beautiful, thanks!

  • Rappelle-Toi sounds lovely, particularly with the combination of sweet, hot, and flowery. I would love some! I’m in the US; thanks for the draw!

  • Onde Sensuelle would be my pick, as the combination of tangy and spicy notes sounds intriguing. I’m in the US; thanks for the draw.

  • I would love to try Rappelle-toi. It sounds so unlike anything that I have. Thanks for the draw.

  • These additions to this line all sound amazingly complex and perfect to evoke or console emotions. I would love the Rappelle-Toi because sometimes it’s difficult to find stillness in the chaos.

  • I’m digging the Onde Sensuelle. Jasmine, Anamalic musk and spices. What’s not to love? In the USA.

  • Nathalie Foy says:

I’d love to try Rappelle-toi That’s what perfume does so powerfully: make memories I am in Canada.

  • This is so wonderful and generous. Thank you. I would choose Haute Voltige as a mixture of Peony and fruit appeals to me. I would also love a “happy” fragrance, and this seems most promising. I am in the US.

  • These all sound appealing, even more so then the first ones. Rappelle-Toi sounds the most appealing to me. I am in the US

  • I have to say that I’m loving the artwork chosen for these reviews! As always, great job!!!

I think they all sound really good, but I’m most interested in Onde Sensuelle because of the mix of spices.

Thank you for the draw … I am in the US.

  • I would choose Onde Sensuelle, because I love spices and I love jasmine. Thank you! I am in the US.

  • If I was to choose I would choose Onde Sensuelle because of ginger spice however since I live in Europe I can only pray and ask for same prizes like the one above from Artisan for EU readers also.
Thank you for this lovely review dear Tama, hope to have the chance to experience these three new perfumes in the near future since I am a fan of most Artisan perfumes, they smell exquisitely well 🙂

  • For me, just based on note preference, my interest would be Rappelle-Toi Onde Sensuelle > Rappelle-Toi > Haute Voltige. Although chili does excite me and I would love more fragrances that could be compared to Pure Chili or Arquiste, I still love animalic musk, amber, and oud. Based in USA.

  • They all intrigue me but I would like to try, Haute Voltage. It has two notes I enjoy peony and pomegranate and I like to try unexpected fruity florals. I am in the US.

  • I would choose Haute Voltige as it sounds the most active and intricate of the three. Also it sounds like the perfect scent to waft when seeing Cirque de Soliel later this month. US reader.

I’d choose Haute Voltige. I love the scent of peonies, and this sounds simply incredible with the other notes. Especially intriguing to me is a base which includes balsam. Peonies amongst the woods sounds like a delight, but that’s not quite what was described. I simply would LOVE to try this!! IN the US. Great draw! Thanks.

  • I would love to try the Haute Voltige. I love scents that include balsam fir and juniper but *don’t* end up smelling exactly like gin and tonic, and I think this would be a great example of this.

  • Based on the enticing mixture of notes I would have to choose Onde Sensuelle. Juniper and ginger are two of my favorite notes and I can’t imagine how they smell together but I’m sure Duchaufour has made it work. I am in the U.S. Thank you!

  • helical gnome says:

Onde Sensuelle sounds perfect. I love spices, even in curry form. I am also intrigued by the addition of juniper.
    Thanks!
    I am in the US.

  • I would choose Rapelle-Toi. The gardenia and pepper sound really interesting. I do love L’Artisan’s Piment Brulant and it would be fun to compare the two.

  • It is a difficult choice but I would love to try Rapelle-Toi. I have been searching for a gardenia to love and this may be it. I live in the U.S. and my first niche purchase was L’Artisan Poivre Piquant.

  • The Haute Voltige sounds delightful interesting, and I love the picture that accompanied the review.

  • I heart Bertrand (my secret fragrance boyfriend… 😉 ), and love so much of what he does. I’d have to go with Onde Sensuelle because — hel-LO! — nuzzling? Yes, please.

  • I would choose Haute Voltige. I can’t wait for the peonies to bloom after this long winter! Thank you, I am in the US.

  • Kim Morgan says:

Onde Sensuelle sounds a little out of my comfort zone… so I’d like to try it.

US resident – thanks so much for the draw!

  • You had me at L’Artisan, but then you brought peonies and in M. Douchafour, so I’m torn. I definitely want Haute Voltige (peonies are my soul mates) on my skin, but I’m also very curious about M. Douchafour’s pairing of Szechuan pepper and gardenia in Rappelle-Toi. I’d be thrilled to be blessed with either one, but of course the peonies are beckoning loudest. I’m in the US. Thank you for the tempting reviews, and thanks to L’Artisan Perfumer for this generous draw.

  • wefadetogray says:

I adore gardenia, although quite frankly I have a terrible time trying to find a true approximation to this slippery flower. I’d love to try Rappelle-Toi.
    Thanks

  • I’m from the US and I would choose Onde Sensuelle because of the citrus and animalic musk notes!

  • Onde Sensuelle would be my pick. I am in need of some love actually so if a perfume can give it to me, then why not!
I am in the US. Thanks for the draw.

I’m in Canada. Thanks for the draw.

I’m in the USA. Thank you!

  • I love gardenia! Being as it is one of the most difficult essesences to capture I’m extreemply curious to see how chili enhances it! Rappelle-Toi is my choice of the three. Great article Tama, and thank you for this chance! I live in the US.

  • I would choose Rappelle-Toi, just because it sounds so beautiful I love the idea of it leading to a meditative state of mind. I really enjoyed reading this! Thanks for the draw. I’m in the U.S.

Hi! I’d choose Rappelle-Toi, because I love gardenia perfumes and I’m always trying new ones. I’m in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • I am fascinated by juxtapositions – I employ the concept often in my interior designs and have started a Pinterest board dedicated to the subject. So I’m very intrigued by Rappelle-Toi and Onde Sensuelle. Both of these compositions have such an intriguing, unexpected mix of notes. I think though, that I would choose Rappelle-Toi as I’ve never had a gardenia scent work for me, I have not a one in my collection and perhaps this one would suit me!

  • Haute Voltige interests me the most. I like the idea of pomegranate with peony. I am in the US. Thanks.

  • I would choose Onde Sensuelle because of the jasmine and spices! I am a spice girl living in the US!!!

  • I would choose Onde Sensuelle because of the spices and animalic musk that it contains. That combination is phenomenal on my skin. I’m in the US and thanks for the draw!

  • Carole Fallon says:

I love the sound of honeyed peppery gardenia in Rappelle-Toi, so that would be my choice. Thanks for the opportunity!

  • I think the thing that makes me stand up and pay attention, more than anything else, is Duchafour’s name. Of these, the spiciness of Onde Sensuelle seems the most likely to work well on my skin, so I’d go for that one.

  • These all sound interesting – I think that I would choose Rappelle-Toi – mainly because it would have been the last one that I would have picked until recently finding that I do like peppery scents and gardenia as well ( I have been trying to step out of my comfort zone and am learning quite a bit about what I enjoy/what smells good on my skin ) I also think that Rappelle-Toi would be a wonderful Spring scent and we all need some Spring in our lives 😉 Thank you so much for the chance.I reside in the USA.

  • One cannot have too much sensuality in one’s life, so I choose Onde Sensuelle. I was happy to know that it also contains jasmine sambac, which is my birth country’s national flower. I reside in the US.

  • Pomegranate has alway been one of my fav. notes. I would love to try Haute Voltige with pomegranate peony and fir with woodsy notes. I love the bitter freshness of fir as well I wonder how it combines with pomegranate & peony.
    Thanks

I would choose Rappelle-Toi because I would like to be remembered, and gin, Sichuan pepper, gardenia, incense, sandalwood, musk, and honey sounds memorable.

  • My choice would be Onde Sensuelle because the spices makes it sound really interesting. Also looks the one with more punch I guess because of the mentioned spices plus amber and musk. It has to be good. I live in the US.

  • Oh my God ,it is too late …My choice is Rappelle-Toi ,because I am so weak for gardenia..
