A couple of years ago, I started hearing buzz about a new young perfumer and former youtube reviewer in the Midwest, who went simply by the name "Kerosene". I contacted him, received his samples and reviewed his first perfumes, which were really interesting and showed a lot of promise. He also had a wonderful bottle design that was painstakingly handmade and cool. The whole package just seemed like a really fun start to a career. I have paid attention to Kerosene and have followed his career as he became more minimalist and consistent with his presentation and still managed to retain a certain sense of cool. Here at ÇaFleureBon we have routinely reviewed his fragrances, did a "Behind the Bottle" piece, and have recently done a "Profiles in American Perfumery".

I was very happy to receive a sample of his new fragrance Dirty Flower Factory. The perfumer, John Pegg, who is Kerosene, is not shy about his perfumes being very in-your-face at the outset, and I admire that bravado. When I received my package I could smell it before I even opened the padded envelope. The aroma that I perceived was really promising, just laden with an incredible bouquet of flowers. But I could also sense the part that made it dirty, which actually came forward more on skin. Kerosene's concept for this perfume was to have a floral fragrance that men would have no reluctance to wear.

Yesterday I applied a very small amount of this fragrance to my wrists. It had a lot of throw for such a small spritz, and the aroma was just fantastic. Today my experiment is a full application, wrists and chest. With the full on application, all the pepper in the perfume comes to the forefront in the top opening blast. I even sneezed just as one would when working with black pepper or chile powder. But it doesn't take long for the aromas to settle. I will be the first to admit that I'm not overly fond of soapiness in perfumes, which can sometimes be brought on by orange blossom. However, there is a really nostalgic soap in this that instantly brought to mind a bar of dime-store cheap, slightly foofy-smelling bar of soap covered in black grease sitting at the edge of a sink in an auto shop bathroom. I like this image, and the smell. As the beautiful jasmine and the other flowers start to really bloom, that soap is replaced by  floral scents that are full-bodied and ripe. It takes a long time for this perfume to reach drydown, but it's a fun ride. A bit of salt starts to peek out. The flowers seem to be dancing as they take turns at the forefront. Everything gets a little sexier as musk weaves a spell. Longevity is excellent.

Notes: Jasmine, Rose, Orange Blossom, Peppercorns, Chili Pepper, Sandalwood, Ambergris and Musk.

I love the way John Pegg approaches his work. He will come up with some kind of visualization or theme that seems interesting and just go to work exploring it. His theme, his visualization for dirty flower factory was "Flowers spiked with grit, laying next to a disheveled bed and a pair of black Doc Martens". I can see that well because even though this is an intensely flowery perfume it does have this beautiful muskiy, slightly salty base  with a bit of wood that holds it into a different atmosphere. He would like men to believe that they can wear this, and they absolutely can.

I received my sample from Kerosene Perfumes. Dirty Flower Factory is available on the Kerosene website for $140 for 100 ml.

I own and love Unknown Pleasures and have sampled Copper Skies, which I also loved – and am considering Fields of Rubus as a purchase soon. I would love to try Dirty Flowers – I am in the US. Thanks!

Yes, I’m a Kerosene fan! The bottles are so cool. I have decants of several, my favorite being Black Vines, which is very fun to wear. Spraying it on is like downing a shot of ouzo. I want to try Dirty Flower Factory because I know it will be a unique take on a floral, which isn’t my favorite category, and I am interested in how it’s different from Pretty Machine. Thanks to all for the review and the draw!

  • I’m all for a fun-ride to a slow sexy drydown! Fabulous review Tama. I adore John and his creativity. I have several of John’s fragrances. I am in the US. Thanks for your generous spirit in sponsoring the draw.

  • That image, soap & grease, is really interesting! I’m interested in trying a dirty flower, since most of the ones I’ve tried are light and clean. I have Unknown Pleasures by Kerosene which I really love, and Copper Skies, which was a warm spicy smoke with an interesting waxy base.

  • I’m fascinated by what I think this would be. I like florals but not super sweet, girly girl florals. I would love to be able to sample this perfume, as well as the others. I’m in Michigan!

  • I own a full bottle of Unknown Pleasures and have sampled Pretty Machine. I am interested to see how John handles what seem to be the musculine vs. feminine facets of this fragrance! His creations are always unexpected! I am in the U.S..

  • I have sampled most of his line my favorites are unknown pleasures and fields of rubus, I would love to try dirty flower, the name alone is very intruiging

  • I have never tried one scent of his! I am so embarrassed 🙁 I need to! This one sounds right up my alley- sexy flowers and just enough roughness to make it even more alluring

  • I love several Kerosene scents; Pretty Machine is one of my favorites. The contrast of notes in this one is very intriguing, and I really want to try it. I’m in the US; thanks for the draw.

  • I have a bottle of Unknown Pleasures and have sampled Santalum Slivers. That this fragrance smells like “a bar of dime-store cheap, slightly foofy-smelling bar of soap covered in black grease” is -very- intriguing :-). I live in the US.

  • I ordered a sampling of Santalum Slivers just a few hours ago. It’ll be my first Kerosene experience. Thanks for the draw!

  • I have not tried anything from Kerosene, but this sounds intriguing! I am always curious about “dirty” notes in perfumes. Thank you for the draw, I am in the US.

MY FIRST TIME HEARING OF THIS BRAND….and loving it..would so like to try a sample. thanks for the giveaway.

  • I have several of John’s fragrances and love them all for different reasons. My favorite is the Bespoke he made for me, he totally hit the nail on the head and made me a perfect scent!
The drydown on Dirty Flowers sounds amazing as do all the notes.
I live in the U.S. Thanks for the draw!

  • I haven’t yet tried the Kerosene line, but am saving my pennies to buy the sampler pack so that Santa will be well informed and prepared this year 😉 I would love to try this, and I am in Canada!

  • I’d love to see what Kerosene does with this. I’ve tried a few from the line and admire Copper Skies (my mom has a bottle) and love Unknown Pleasures. I’m in the US.

  • Though I have heard a lot of good about Kerosene, I haven’t tried any. It’s not fair, but when I hear Kerosene, I think kerosene and I hate the smell. Dirty Flower Factory sounds like it could be a love/hate for me and a good scent to break through my negative image. In US.

  • I have Unknown Pleasures. 🙂 I’d welcome winning this draw. I’m intrigued by the salt peeking out. usa

  • What intrigues me about this one is the “dirty” part of it. Also, I am a sucker for all things rose, so there’s that.

I have yet to experience any Kerosene creations, so this would be a perfect opportunity to get introduced to it.

I am in the US. Thanks for the draw. 🙂

  • Drew Stapelkamp says:

I recently purchased Unknown Pleasures and had no idea what I was in store for. Heavenly.

I usually shy from florals…prove me wrong 😉

  • I haven’t even tried anything yet from Kerosene creations but I’m intrigued by the names he comes up for his perfumes. I love flowers esp. Rose, jasmine & orange blossom and the dirt from Ambergris & Musk so I really should get this one!
    Thanks USA

  • Mrrrraaaoorrr, I love dirty skanky flowers! I happen to love Kerosene Pretty Machine and Unknown Pleasures. I also love skanky dirty perfumes, so I would love to try this one, it sounds beautiful! Thank you for the drawing!

  • I have sampled many in the line in tiny vials. I’m happy to try something “dirty” from the line. Chili pepper is something different, like to see what that’s like.

  • Fazal Cheema says:

My favorite Kerosene fragrance is R’Oud Elements..i am aware most men or boys runs away from floral scents and the term ‘too feminine’ is a common response..it is clear John has especially targeted such people in order to further blur the boundary between traditionally masculine and feminine notes..thanks a lot John for the generous offering. I am in the US

  • Never tried any of Kerosenes scents but I would love to try this one. Something about the soapiness, dirt, grit , salt , flowers and Doc Martens intrigue me. Im in the US.

  • Living in the USA I have been reading about Kerosene now for quite some time. I would be interested in experiencing his newest fragrance of flowers, dirt and grit for men.

  • I have sampled all of Mr. Pegg’s fragrances except for Black Vines, Copper Skies is my favorite.
Would love to try Dirty Flower Factory because of the description of a musky, slightly salty base with a bit of wood. I am in the US.

  • Latifah S says:

I have not had the opportunity to sample any of the Kerosene fragrances. This one sounds really interesting. I think it’s the way the contrasts are described. It’s like when people describe someone as pretty but not the typical cookie cutter pretty… I guess I am having an ANTM moment. lol Thanks for the draw. I live in the US.

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

I have not yet experienced any Kerosene scents, but am intrigued by this one and the chili pepper note. I most enjoy fragrances that can be worn by both men and women. Since Mr. Pegg is new on the scene, I’d like to be first on my block to try it!

  • Valentine girl says:

The spicy pepper opening, with a salty, musky closing & a floral filling in between sounds absolutely “dirty”. This would be the first time I would have the pleasure of trying one of Mr. Pegg’s creations, if I should be lucky to win. Thanks for the opportunity and I really enjoyed reading the recent post featuring him. USA resident.

  • I’m not a big fan of a lot of florals, but am VERY intrigued by a dirty one that men could wear! I haven’t experienced any Kerosene frags personally – this would be my first! I live in the US — Thanks for the draw!

  • I haven’t tried any Kerosene scents but they all sound really interesting. I love the idea of a grimy bar of floral soap, have enjoyed that smell many times. I am in the US. Thanks.

  • This one is intriguing to me because of the floral notes combined with the rougher edges of pepper and musk. I have yet to experience any Kerosene fragrances and I hope this will be the first. I’m in the U.S., thanks.
