New Perfume Review: Isabey Paris Perle de Gardenia + High Heels on Wet Pavement Draw

the blue gardenia film noir

French Movie Poster for Blue Gardenia 1953 starring Anne Baxter

Gardenia has always been one of my  favorite notes in the pantheon of perfumes.  It’s the floral scent that, for me, is the equivalent of a good noir film where the Mysterious Blonde enters the gumshoe’s dank little office with a story to tell.  It rides the line between propriety and impropriety, sometimes lushly floral and then rudely cheesy or indolic. I think it’s because gardenia doesn’t play well with others, really – she is too much of a diva.  She's not as blatantly seductive as jasmine, or as traditional as rose scents are.  She's  not all buttoned up like muguet, neither.  Gardenia has this almost disarmingly moody side to her– at once sophisticated, but then the darker, indolic side kicks in and you just know  you are a goner.

But this is why gardenia as a fragrance is so compelling:  there’s a backstory to how it develops that you’re either all in for, or you avoid.  Because the gumshoe always has that one moment in his office where the Mysterious Blonde shows up begging for help, and he can either take or leave the case.  I always let the dame talk, and so I find myself endlessly chasing leads to find the Ultimate Gardenia Scent– a scent that can handle all of gardenias strange and tempting facets in equal measure. If Perle de Gardenia was a novel, the first line would be something like,  “It was a dark and stormy night. I was working late when she knocked on the door  What a looker…I knew right then she’d break my heart. From first sniff,  I was in serious trouble, because Isabey’s Perle de Gardenia is everything a gardenia lover like me searches for in a fragrance.

Some gardenia scents come off as overly sweet, almost smothering in their attempt at high floral drama, while others bury the gardenia note in competing accords that take away from how lush this note can be.  I recently wrote about the relaunch of Isabey’s Lys Noir.  And while Isabey’s Eau de Parfums are well worth getting your paws on, they are but a delicious appetizer for the feast that arrives in the Perle collection.  (Isabey has also released Perle Extraits of Lys Noir and Route D’Emeraude.) Everything that makes the EDP Isabey fragrances so wonderful: i.e. the richness of the individual notes, the longevity and the clarity in the composition are blown to stratospheric heights with the Perle Extraits. Perfumer Jean Jacques has taken the original base of the Gardenia EDP, adding a white leather note, and amped up the concentration to 30%, with the result being a stronger, more defined, but a very different fragrance that can be worn on its own or layered over Isabey’s original Gardenia.

The power and the sillage on these is  shocking – the first time I sampled Perle de Gardenia, it happily made itself comfortable on my skin for well over 10 hours and greeted me for a late breakfast.  The volume and depth of the notes need an entire mansion to house them, or maybe a symphony to accurately give voice to their song.

But for all that, Perle de Gardenia still does what every great gardenia fragrance should – it layers on the mystery and the intrigue without being loud or screechy.  This Mysterious Blonde knows better than to scream her story.  It’s always better to whisper and infer “What Happened On That Night”, rather than break the door down.  The top notes of neroli, ylang ylang and orange blossom provide a sweet, floral start – the ylang ylang takes precedence here over the orange blossom, so it’s sweet rather than powdery.  Then the gardenia, rose and iris glide in, and the sweet floral notes turn towards a veined cheese and wet sidewalk vibe in the heart, with the rose keeping the more acrid aspects of the gardenia style in check.  And finally, the drydown is anchored by a smoky late-night hit of labdanum, leather, patchouli, ambergris and sandalwood (Because no one wearing gardenia perfume gets in early, or should…).   Perle de Gardenia Extrait allows each level of this fragrance ample time to develop and each phase remains strong and vivid on the skin.  There are absolutely no muddled notes or anything out of balance in this perfume – just evocative power.

You will lose yourself endlessly in this scent – it is never boring or cloying in the least.  It takes what every gardenia lover loves most in a perfume and presents them all to the nose in a flirty, kaleidoscopic style that is memorable without being overpowering.   Having said this – go easy, folks: a little of this goes a long, long way.  One spritz and you’re good to go.

But like any great mystery, it’s best to go in cautiously until you know what’s what. Perle De Gardenia’s power and strength require some restraint in applying, and the beauty of how all the different aspects of what this fragrance can offer may overwhelm some wearers.  But for those of us who can’t live without this note, and who are slaves to her charms, Perle de Gardenia is an absolute must-have.  If there’s another out there that can come close to this, I don’t want to know.  This one brought me near to tears,  and I will always hear her high heels on wet pavement everytime I wear it.   This is stunning, magical perfume and perfumer Jean Jacques has created a memorable femme fatale.

  • Hmm, gardenia with white leather… I think I’d like it! My fav FF is Bacall. Thanks for the draw; I’m in the US.

  • Oh, gardenia-love it! And it must be potent, if one spritz is enough. My favourite film noir is Gilda, with the beautiful Rita Hayworth. Or perhaps Double Indemnity, with Barbara Stanwyck. Thank you for your elegant writing-high heels on wet pavement-excellent image!

  • Lillian Holloway says:

High heels on wet pavement! Wow! I certainly need to try a fragrance that evokes that image. In the US.

  • Love gardenia – so very much! Haven’t found THE ONE yet, but I do love gardenia perfumes. One spritz to stay with you for ten plus hours? Sign me up! Riding the line between propriety and impropriety – sounds so very sexy and alluring.
My choice for femme fatale is Lana Turner, The Postman Always Rings Twice.
I’m in the US, thanks for the draw!

  • Two of my favorite things- a sultry gardenia fragrance and film noir! I am just now about halfway tonight’s film- The Big Sleep. My favorite film noir femmes fatales are Lauren Bacall and Martha Vickers as Vivian and Carmen Sternwood, respectively. These two very different characters each embody the femme fatale archetype in a different and alluring way yet they are completely complementary and both play beautifully alongside Humphrey Bogart’s no-nonsense detective Phillip Marlowe. The backdrop of dark and rainy Los Angeles fits so perfectly with your description of this fragrance! I often associate my fragrances with a film’s setting or character, so I can’t wait to read others’ responses! I am in Brooklyn, NY. Thank you for reading!

  • Love the sound of this one and apparently its not screechy. I am still looking for my Gardenia fragrance, eventhough I already love the Chanel Gardenia, this one sounds even more appealing, Gardenia, White leather, Labdanum ….some of my favorite notes. Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction is one of my favorite Femme Fatales. I am in the US and thank you for this wonderful draw.

  • leathermountain says:

You got me with moody. I know just what you mean in principle, and now I want to experience it with this scent. I’m partial to Bound, an iconic film in my world. I’m in the US, grateful for the review and draw.

  • It was fun thinking of my favorite film noir or femme fatal. There were a few of both. I love old films. I’ll go with The Maltese Falcon. On to perfumes – Isabey Gardenia is one of my favorite scents. I love it. From what you say Perle de Gardenia is even better. It must be awesome!

  • Gardenia with a big projection and sillage? Yes please! I love gardenia and this one sounds like a gardenia that is not afraid to make itself noticed. I can’t wait to try it. I must admit that I have not watched any Film Noir movies (hangs my head in shame) but I do love those black and white pictures of Marlene Dietrich in a tuxedo and with a cigarette. She LOOKS dangerous.

Thanks for the draw. I’m in Canada.

  • I am feeling the need to loose myself endlessly after reading this review! I do love Gardenia and wouldn’t mind at all coming home very late at least one nite a week. My favorite Femme Fatal movie… The last seduction.. A perfect fit for this perfume don’t you think.? I am in the US and would love this one.

  • Ahhhhhh, leather is my latest crush – and I love me some gardenia. Hmm film noir? Femme fatale? These are not things I’m particularly familiar with… but one older film that I really enjoy is Sunset Boulevard. Does that count in any way shape or form?? Thanks for the lovely review and the draw, I’m in the US!

  • Fazal Cheema says:

What piqued my interest in Isabey Gardenia is that it is mysterious yet not loud. It may be EDP but the concentration of 30 percent easily puts it in the category of extraits. The perfumer Jean Jacques seems to have done a good job of not making it either too sweet which can distract from the realy beauty of gardenia as Steve notes. My favorite film noire is The Big Sleep. thanks so much for this generous draw. I am in the US

  • Marcopietro says:

Wow! It’s sounds like a concentration of perfumery’ golden age and movie icons. Irresistible!
When I think of film noir and femme fatale the mind goes to Cat People directed by Jacques Tourneur.
Thanks for the draw. I’m in EU.

  • That was very interesting review. I don’t really know the scent of gardenia, but I very interest about it. And that bottle is fabulous too. I would very like to try this perfume. I had not seen a very lot of these old movies, but I like the style of these classic actresses. My choice for femme fatale is Lana Turner – The Postman Always Rings Twice.
    I live in Europe.

  • Funny thing is that I saw Dead Reckoning like 2 months ago and it got me into a film-noir fever. Some of my favourites would be: Out of the Past, In a Lonely Place and Laura.
I would like to try Perle de Gardenia, because, as the name says, it has gardenia! And I like gardenia! It’s a big white floral, sumptuous with a classy smell and I can definitely see the association with a femme-fatale kind of woman wearing gardenia.

    I live in Eu. Thanks!

  • I love the film noir angle, some of my favorite movies! Double Indemnity deserves a mention, but I’m pretty sure my favorite goes to To Have and Have Not, and Lauren Bacall. I’m in the US.

  • Roseinrose says:

Gardenia is, along with roses, my beloved flowers, I love the sensual, sweet smell of this flower its “intoxicating power” and Perle de Gardenia has all of the above characteristics.
I adore Film Noir and my favorite film noir is Rebecca, (directed by Alfred Hitchcock) with Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine in the first roles what an amazing film I have seen it several times and I never get bored watching this film over and over again (this and Casablanca with my great love Humphrey Bogart and sweet Ingrid Bergman).
A favorite Film Noir actress is Hedi Lamar (what a “beauty” with the true sense of the word beauty) and Lauren Bacall only she and her way shed looked at someone could get him/her frozen by fear.
I live in EU and I thank you for this lovely review and draw.

  • The Big Sleep with Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart. Lauren Bacall is for me the personification of Film Noir with her brooding, dark and mysterious appearance, but still sophisticated and extremely pretty.

I would love to own a bottle of Perle de Gardenia. Every ingredient in Perle de Gardenia is alluring on it’s own and combined it must be extremely wonderful.

Thanks for this lovely draw. I live in the EU.

  • I loved the phrase “…no muddled notes, just evocative power.” Sign me up for a vat! I have always loved gardenia scents, but this one sounds extraordinary. For film noir, Body Heat with Kathleen Turner and William Hurt is hard to beat. I’m in the US and thanks for the wonderful review and the draw.

  • I Love gardenias and never found the right one. This sounds beautiful and I think extrait formulas are great because they stay close on the skin. Hmmm… Barbara Stanwyck for actress and Gaslight for best film noir. Love that poster btw
    USA

  • MikasMinion says:

I love gardenia but find it hard to wear as it usually becomes screechy and thin and most gardenia scents seem to have base notes that just fold up and die. If it brought any Cafleurebon editor to tears, I simply must try it.
My favorite femme fatale is pictured above, the gorgeous Lizbeth Scott, which gives me hope that it’s a sign that this is a gardenia perfume which won’t disappoint. I’m in the U.S. Thanks.

  • I adore fresh Gardenia but have never found a scent that adequately renders it on my skin . Maybe this is it – although the ylang in the opening gives me pause….a labdanum drydown is ALL THAT and more for me though !!
Lauren Bacall by far – her strength yet vulnerability plus loyalty are irresistible in the film noir genre .
    I live in the U S .

  • Wow! very generous draw. 🙂 I think all the surrounding notes make this a most compelling perfume. Thank you for the chance. USA

  • Jennifer Witt says:

Gardenia is my favorite fragrance by far! Plus, a scent with NO PATCHOULI for once (WHY is it everywhere??) This was a great review. I would have to say my favorite film noir femme is Barbara Stanwyck. She was AMAZING, “right down the line”. I loved her in Double Indemnity and everything else she did. What a powerful actress. I live in the US.

  • Mystery and intrigue and a smokey late-night- sounds like it was made for me;-) I’ve only tried the normal Isabey Gardenia and love it, and Steve makes this perle de Gardenia sound even more amazing, near to tears, being the ultimate selling point. So, fantastic draw thank you all, Steve, CFB and Panouge. My favourite Film Noir Femme Fatale… Alone for her performance in witness for the prosecution Marlene Dietrich might be my choice, doesn’t get more Fatale than that. I’m in EU

  • sillage4ever says:

I like leather and suede but only when they’re reigned in, so “white leather” layered with gardenia sounds exactly like my sort of note. I’m in the USA.

I’m gonna take a little liberty on the film noir question and say that my favorite lady of the moment is Lana Del Rey. In her darkly cinematic music I hear the history of how a femme fatale is made, the ultimate origin story for a lass pushed to the wilder side of things. When her latest single fails to excite me, I give another listen to “Video Games” and remind myself that bad girls start out good and have stories of their own that are worth telling.

    Thanks for the draw!

  • Gardenia is my favorite note and this sound just perfect! I’ll go with a more modern film noir lady, Kim Basinger in LA Confidential – she was so gorgeous in that film. I’m in the US and thank you for this fabulous draw!

  • Gardenias for me just happen to be one of the most beautiful flowers on the planet. Period. I love having gardenias blooming in the summer, and it’s just great bending down to smell them on my way to and fro each day. (I have them in pots, near the driveway). Such fragrant little beauties they are. For a fragrance, if done right, they are just as lovely. Super feminine and beautiful. Hmm, film – anything from the 40’s with Bogie in it for sure. All that hidden sexual inuendo and mystery. and in b&w. of course, have to be wearing a great floral gardenia when viewing! I’m in the US. thank you so much for the article and draw. This perfume certainly is a must. I agree.

  • Perle de Gardenia sounds amazing: gardenia, white leather, sandalwood… My favorite femme fatale is Barbara Stanwyck in Double Indemnity.
Thanks for the opportunity! I’m in the U.S.

  • I love the original Isabey Gardenia, so I’m very excited to try a different version of it. Lauren Bacall has been my favorite femme fatale from the very first time I heard her speak in a movie — she had such a throaty, sexy voice. I’m in the US. Thanks for the drawing!

  • Gardenias are sultry and not for anyone on the shy side. I have a few planted but they are miserly and I barely get a few flowers a year. It would be lovely to have an “everblooming” gardenia flower in perfume form.

I live in the United States and my favorite Film Noir is “Touch of Evil” with Orson Welles. Marlene Dietrich makes a short appearance and is memorable as the madam of the local brothel. Definitely worth a watch.

  • I love to have a fragrance unfolding and lingering for as long as Perles de Gardenia. The “kaleidoscopic ” style is an appealing description. Barbara Stanwyck was one of my favorite actresses in many films, and Double Indemnity is her most memorable Film Noir role for me.

  • I haven’t tried any gardenia perfumes, sometimes the white floras I have tried have been too loud so the description “it layers on the mystery and the intrigue without being loud or screechy” really appealed to me. I have never seen any Film Noir movies…I’ll have to get on that! I live in the US

  • Gardenia! One of my favorite notes in the pantheon of perfume! My favorite film noir actor would definately be Lauren Bacall, and too many movies to just single out one, but Gaslight with Charles Boyer and a very young Angela Lansbury is one of my all time faves. I live in the USA.

  • I like how this gardenia scent is described like a misterious novel or perfect for a femme fatale. For me Marlene Dietrich is the one when I think about these women! What appeals to me about this gardenia perfume is the the drydown: a smoky late-night hit of labdanum, leather, patchouli, ambergris and sandalwood.
I,m in EU. Thanks for the draw.

  • This one has some of the notes of a great love of mine: Palazzo, Of course, I do not expect Perle de Gardenia being similar to Palazzo, but only seeing some of the notes makes me to want to try it as soon as possible.
As for femme fatale, I very much enjoyed the character Cora Smith played by Lana Turner in The Postman Always Rings Twice.

    I live in Europe. Thanks!

  • i love Fleur Nocturne from Isabey, an amazing lush floral and now the Perle de Gardenia sounds fantastic too: gardenia with leather!

my favourite film noire is Double Indemnity with truly unique Barbara Stanwyck.
i am in the EU – thank you for the draw!

  • Oh indeed the allure of mystery is a great one in perfume and the selection of rich notes in Perle de Gardenia intrique me even more so as after a cold I need a scent that can kick my semi anosmic state out the window! The thought of a good intense perfume is drawing me in especially on reading this “go easy, folks: a little of this goes a long, long way. One spritz and you’re good to go.” I think of the film of 39 steps starring Madeleine Carroll as amongst my choices, I like to be different. I am in the UK. Thanks.

  • Freeestyler says:

Thank you so much for this wonderful article. I love flowers, I love leather, this scent has to be amazing. I love the old movies. I have many favourite films, where femme fatal in the leading role is, but I will go for The Maltese Falcon with Humphrey Bogart, simply because this movie is really something special. I live in Germany.

  • An opening of orange blossom and ylang-ylang, plus a substantial, smoky base are just what a gardenia perfume needs, in my opinion. I’m in the US, and my favorite femme fatale, always and forever, is Hedy Lamarr.

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

You had me at gardenias. I love their fragrance. Can’t wait to try Perle de Gardenia, I live in the US and my favorite Film Noir femme fatale and movie is Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) from Sunset Boulevard.

  • I too am searching for my perfect gardenia. This sounds wonderful! I love the movie descriptive review. Ingrid Bergman was the coolest blonde that ever walked the screen, in my opinion. I treausre my beautiful bottle of Isabey Fleur Nocturne.

  • Ylang ylang is a favorite note for me lately. I love the idea of ylang, gardenia, and sandalwood taking the stage in this fragrance. Swwooonn.

I live in the US, and my favorite film noir is Strangers on a Train. Thanks to this film the words “criss cross” give me the shivers.

  • I love gardenia and the original Isabey Gardenia so I am very curious about this one. Would love to try it. Favoite femme is Lauren Bacall. I am in the EU. Thanks for the draw.

  • I love floral scents, especially with warm weather on the way. Gardenia is,such a calming and relaxing scent and this fragrance sounds outstanding. I’m in Canada and my fav femme would be Lauren Bacall.

  • I could be a slave to gardenia, if it lasted more on my skin…And there you go with this powerful review…I am speechless! I would really like to try Perle de Gardenia and check the lasting power!
My Femme Fatale – Rita Hayworth!
I am in Bulgaria (EU). Thank you for the draw!

  • Perle de Gardenia sounds sexy as all get out! I liked Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct, maybe not a favorite, but the first that came to mind. Not a classic, but very noir indeed. Thanks, I’m in the US.

  • I’ve always loved gardening, and try my best every spring and summer to plant flowers. Gardenias are absolutely gorgeous and I love flowery perfumes! This fragrance sounds great and a perfect warm weather smell. Lauren Bacall has got to be my favorite. She’s so beautiful! I’m a Canadian reader and thanks for the draw!

  • What really appeals to me is the vintage vibe I get from it, but also a modern twist added. I enjoy vintage type scents, and gardenia is a really calming smell . I would love this not only for myself, but for my mother as welll. She enjoys flowers a ton and this would be a perfect gift. As for femme fetales, Lizbeth Scott has always interested me. I enjoy her style and confidence a ton!
