New Perfume Review: Imaginary Authors Yesterday Haze by Josh Meyer + Lovers Embrace Draw

Josh Meyer Of Imaginary Authors

When I first reviewed the Imaginary Authors line, perfumer Josh Meyer had just participated in the 2012  Artisan Fragrance Salon in Los Angeles. Everyone was taken by his interesting premise and gorgeous package design. Josh has been able to maintain a very lively audience for his fragrances as his business has grown and has been smart by releasing a limited number of perfumes per year, so each new scent is highly anticipated. His latest fragrance, Yesterday's Haze, was "penned" by the imaginary author Lenora Blumberg, who we last met in 2012's, Violet Disguise. This new scent writing has been generating a lot of buzz, and for good reason. “Just as sunsets are more beautiful than on hazy days so, too, are the memories of yesterday.”

I don't know why I even bother reading notes lists. Notes set me up to expect a certain kind of perfume but some perfumes are so interestingly blended that the notes are just a distraction. Such is the case with Yesterday Haze. Here is the scenario that crept into my brain as I wore this perfume: A beautiful woman wearing a lovely, ambery, womanly perfume has been embraced by a man wearing an equally lovely masculine scent. She is pleased, relaxed, and slightly flushed as she goes about her business. We don't know if he is a lover or a crush, but the idea of her wearing a trace of his scent obviously delights her. We wonder if he also likes having a trace of her scent as well. A note of saltiness comes from my skin as I wear this, which is unexpected and very intriguing. It is like a small fan blowing across my skin, giving me a different olfactory experience each time the fan comes around to waft.

I wore this on a slightly cooler day, when I only slightly boiled in my office. The longevity of this fragrance is very impressive. I could still smell everything on my skin when I was going home from work, later than usual. I definitely enjoyed my day in this perfume; it is deliciously evocative and made me feel rather sexy. Wearing Yesterday Haze is a good example of olfactory evocation.

Notes: fig, iris, cream, tonka, tree bark, walnut bitters, orchard dust.

I want it because it sounds so absolutely captivating as it changes with the breeze. I adore iris, fig, cream, and amber. Cannot even imagine it shifting from one emphasis to another. I live in California in the U.S. Thank you so much for the generous draw. How lovely!

  • The notes, oh the notes……fig, whats not to love, this sounds perfect for the warm weather. I need this. Thank you for this awesome draw!

  • I would love this perfume because It’s gorgeous, and I cannot currently afford a full bottle. I did order a sample as soon as I heard about it, though. This fragrance is very woody, but the fig shines through gorgeously. I’ve been wearing my sample for three days straight, and I cannot wait for fall so that I can try it again in cooler weather to see how it evolves.

I live in the US (California). My favorite Imaginary Author scents so far are Yesterdays Haze and Violet Disguise.

  • Just ordered a sample of this, can’t wait to smell it! I think the Imaginary Authors concept is really fun and Josh is a nice guy, I am always interested in what’s new in this line. Memoirs of a Trespasser is one of my favorite perfumes in my collection. Thanks for the review and opportunity 🙂

I really like Josh Meyer’s perfumes. My current favorite is Memoirs of a Trespasser. It has the best longevity of any perfume I own – I can still smell it on my wrist the next morning! I’m in the US. Thanks for featuring a great up and coming perfumer!

there are so many notes that i have never encountered before which may be due to the fact that some notes have been specifically created for this fragrance such as cream. i have only smelled one from the line which is Memoirs of a Trespasser and liked it. thanks for the generosity. i am in the US

  • I would love to try this as I am a big fan of IA and Josh’s work. I am intrigued by the notes in this perfume. My favorite IA is Memoirs of a Trespasser right now; but I also love Mosaic.

  • I’m liking from the line, Falling into the Sea this summer. This one interests me because the notes seem so unique in combination. US

  • I have become completely enamored with the Imaginary Author’s fragrances. My favorite is probably Memoirs of a Trespasser – the first IA fragrance I tried – but that is definitely more of a cold weather scent. I am super excited to expand my collection! I am in the US (NY in particular.) Thanks!

  • Falling into the Sea makes my heart skip a beat! I can put it on in the morning, do my everyday routine, and still come home smelling just as yummy as I did when I walked out the door! Thank you for yet another work of art I can take with me everywhere I go! You, Josh, know exactly what you are doing! Bravo! _Portland, Oregon_

I loved the article and the entire line sounds interesting and very different. I’d love to get the chance to try this one because Tama said it made her feel sexy….I like that in a fragrance, so I’d definitely like to give this one a try. If it has the longevity as well, then it’s double the fun! I’m in the US. Thanks so much.

  • The cream and walnut bitters stood out to me. It’s always hard to get an idea of a fragrance from just the notes alone . My favorite is Memoirs of a Trespasser. In the USA. Thanks for a really great draw.

  • A wonderful review thank you. I loved this” We don’t know if he is a lover or a crush, but the idea of her wearing a trace of his scent obviously delights her” It feels so romantic and I want to try it. Thank you Josh for this draw. I have not tried the line before but look forward to doing so.

Cape Heartache is a favorite with Memoirs in a second place for me right now.

I want this perfume because of tree bark and because everything Josh makes is just beautiful.

  • I love the whole concept of this line. I’ve only sampled a couple but I find them to be interesting and well done. This one sounds complex and unexpected.

  • I had thought Violet Disguise would be my favorite, but it ended up not working on me, so I’m interested to try another scent based on the same ‘author’. My favorite ended up being Memoirs of a Trespasser. I’m in the US.

  • Michael Krause says:

I love this house and enjoy all that I have tried thus far. My favorite to date is Cape Heartache and am definitely interested in this fig-based new addition. I live in the U.S.

  • Thank you for the beautiful draw. I am in the US. I have so far only tried Cape Heartache. I do enjoy it, and it is one of the few pine-y, cedar-y fragrances I like. I would love to try this more gourmand scent, and am especially drawn to the fig note. I especially enjoy it when fig is combined with saltier notes. From the review, it sounds like a very beautiful scent.

  • I purchased a sample of this as soon as I knew of its release. I’ve worn it once since, and I like it a lot. My favorite Imaginary Authors fragrance is Bull’s Blood although I don’t wear it as often as Memoirs of a Trespasser.

I am in the US. Thanks for the draw!

I want this perfume because I really love the scent of fig – both in the summer and as the days start to cool in autumn. The perfect note. I live in the US. I don’t have a favorite Imaginary Authors fragrance since I’ve never tried one, but would like to try Falling into the Sea and Violet Disguise.

  • This sounds gorgeous, and I keep hearing more about how wonderful this is! My interest is piqued. So far, Cape Heartache is my favorite. I’m in the U.S.

  • Anything with iris, tonka, and fig has my attention. Also, I have no idea what “orchard dust” smells like, but I’m intrigued by it. I liked Mosaic and Cape Heartache from this line, but I’d very much like to try others as well. I’m in the US; thanks for the draw!

  • rivercitylizzy says:

I’m intrigued by the idea of wearing both sides of a lover’s embrace, as the author suggests, not to mention FIG :). So far I am really enjoying Mosaic in this 90-100s heat–it is like a cool fountain in a sun-baked plaza! I am in the US. Thanks for the draw!
