New Perfume Review: House of Matriarch L’Arrivée (Christi Meshell) 2017 + Tropical Jasmine Draw

Bing Crosby, Dorothy Lamour, Bob Hope and Judith Barrett. The Road to Singapore 1940

House Of Matriarch aficionados, rejoice. Artisan Perfumer Christi Meshell has launched a new perfume named L’Arrivée and it has quickly become one of my all-time favorites from the line. Described by Christi as a “Masculine-Floral jasmine soliflore”; it is anything but a simple a soliflore. It is complex and nuanced, with multiple levels that drift, float, engage and enchant throughout its journey. L’Arivée, (The Arrival) is a stroll through a flower market in Thailand surrounded by the intense fragranced pleasure of the small jasmine wrist garlands known as "Phuang Malai”, which are given for celebrations, ceremonial offerings, greeting friends, and other occasions. The scent of these small wristlet garlands is intoxicating and unforgettable, a softly-pitched, heady white floral, mixed with the green and sweet fragrance of pandan and sometimes kaffir lime. A white floral for a hot climate.

House of Matriarch's Perfumer Christi Meshell

Originally created as a Parfum d’Coif or hair mist for a friend of Christi Meshell’s, circumstances prevented production and the perfume formula languished for many years, but never out of mind for Christi. Finally an opportunity presented itself, and the perfume was fully realized last year as a Limited Edition for Lincoln Motor Company's “Black Women in Hollywood” event. It was a lavish gifting for the Lincoln Motors influencers and was very well received.  So well received in fact, that Christi named it L’Arrivée and added it to House Of Matriarch’s High Perfumery Collection. It has in fact “arrived” and we are all the better for it.

Like the faint and exotic but unmistakable whispered scent of night-blooming jasmine on a soft evening breeze through a moonlit garden, this singularly stunning 100% natural perfume opens with a mixture of jasmine, soft powdery mimosa, and a slight waft of a truly luscious vanilla gently stained with cacao. The marigold and broom add a dusty, earthy note while the magnolia and tiare provide a tropical humidity that is fairly dripping off the woody junglesque stem of a giant philodendron somewhere in the wild.

Indeed wild it is, and slightly lascivious but without the heavy indolic feel of many tropical white florals. Rather it’s the feeling of laying on cool sheets in a hot shuttered afternoon, a single bead of sweat lazily meandering down your side, as the fan above your bed chills you slightly and provides the wished-for delicious coolness you seek. Wearing L’Arrivée is like awakening from that somnambulistic state, and languidly stretching the full-body stretch that makes you shudder a bit with its glorious almost climactic feeling. The jasmine lasts a good long while, almost throughout the entire drydown ultimately becoming softer and creamier with the emergence of the sandal and rosewoods. This is a perfume that will make you smile, not broadly but slyly with a knowing gleam in your eye, it’s just that kind of scent; private, intense, bordering on “naked-under-the-trench-coat” sensual, and unabashedly gorgeous.

Notes: Jasmine, marigold, bergamot, magnolia, tiare, broom, Omani frankincense, neroli, rosewood, Hawaiian vanilla, Grand Hawaiian sandalwood, African Gia, civet accord.

Disclosure: Thank you so very much to Christ Meshell and House Of Matriarch for the sample. My opinions are my own.

  • Wonderful review, I very liked to read it. This part is my favorite: “Like the faint and exotic but unmistakable whispered scent of night-blooming jasmine on a soft evening breeze through a moonlit garden”. I very love tropical flower, and I also very love the sweet scent of jasmine. My favorite perfume from House Of Matriarch is Coco Blanc. Thank you very much for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • I am just discovering jasmine as my tastes in fragrance are expanding. What a great review and it makes me want to win this. I live in Washington state, USA

This is interesting because you do not often hear about masculine floral jasmine creations. This also seems quite different from Christi’s other creations. It is associated with Lincoln Motor Company’s event that makes it even more special. I have not tried many tropical floral creations. My favorite from HoM is Orca. I am in the US.

Night blooming jasmine? Broom? Cacao? I’m in. Sounds like a dream perfume from the the review. Or my dream, anyway! Not familiar with House of Matriarch but on my way to seek out info. Thank yoo for the review….I live in California.

  • Jasmine, Jasmine, Jasmine, how i love you! I’m in the US, thank you for the draw.

  • Elizabeth T. says:

I love jasmine, but am frequently disappointed as they often dry down to a generic white musk in the base. This all natural, high perfumery perfume sounds delightful – I love a dusty aspect to my perfumes… I’d love to smell it added to jasmine! Thank you for the lovely review, and the generous draw! I’m in the USA, and my favorite HoM perfume is Trillium.

I really like jasmine and Robert’s review certainly highlights this aspect of the scent. I like H of M’s Devotion very much. Thank you for the draw. I live in the USA

  • I like the way Robert really amps up the sensuality aspect of the perfume..it gets warmer and warmer then imagination takes over and it becomes owned by the reader 🙂 I’ve never had the privelege to try a Christi M fragrance-she comes with wonderful endorsements, especially the reviews here so they must e pretty damn good. I do love florals, esp those powerful ones like Jasmine and Magnolia. Thanks for the draw- worldwide and generous. I am in NZ

I love the detailed description of Robert’s review on the scent and the images the fragrance gives him. He talks about the feeling the scent provokes and that provides a personal touch to the review. I’m a fan of tropical floral since I grew up surrounded by floral. Golden Dewdrop is my favourite floral although there is no perfume with that scent. My favourite HOM fragrance is Kazimi. It is a dark rich complex rose that is extremely pleasant and addictive.

I’d love to be included in the draw! I live in Alberta Canada.

  • Oh my, that was a fantastic review , I love the description “awakening from that somnabulistic state ” and as a true fan of this house I have this perfume on my list already. I have many favorites from HoM, my first love being Carmine and The Maj. I was actually wondering what Christi Meshell would do with an exotic floral like frangipani or jasmine. There is the magnificent Bohemian Black with a Tiare note that is quite unusual set.
I live in Germany, nevertheless I adore the scent of gardenias and frangipani. Thanks for the review and thanks for the draw!

  • Very beautiful review. thank you!!!
I am curious to test interesting mix of ; mixture of jasmine, soft powdery mimosa, and a slight waft of a truly luscious vanilla gently stained with cacao; as Robert said.
I have never tested any of House Of Matriarch.
    Now I live in Armenia.

Would love to try this lovely mix of jasmine, mimosa and vanilla. I think the composition would be wonderful.

  • I grew up in Hawaii and this sounds delightful. It would be interesting to me to see what olfactory memories this might conjure of my childhood.

  • Love the detail the reviewer goes into,i cant wait to try, really enjoy this house coco blanche is my fav

  • I love the description of the “whispered scent of night-blooming jasmine on a soft evening breeze”. I’m partial to succulent white florals and I think they shine best in the evening! I’ve yet to try HOM but Coco Blanc and Woo are on my list. I’m in the US – thanks for such a generous draw.

  • OMG, must try this….. I’m swooning already…. Christi Meshell is a wizzard when it comes to white flowers. I’m totally smitten with Forbidden. I live in the Netherlands. Thank you for the review and this wonderful draw!

  • ElizabethC says:

This sounds amazing. Love, love jasmine! I’ve really enjoyed Coco Blanc!

  • kaitracid says:

Lovely review and the last part was naughty “bordering on “naked-under-the-trench-coat” sensual, and unabashedly gorgeous.” I love jasmine, one of my most loved flowers. Haven’t smelled a HoM perfume before. Thanks for the draw, I live in Europe.

This review brought back happy memories of a trip to Bangkok, when i stayed in a cheap guesthouse near Thewet Market, east of the Chao Phraya River. All I did on that trip was wander from market to market. The flower market was so rich with fragrance. Recently, I have been all about experimenting with while floral fragrances.
    Thank you for the draw.
    I live in the USA.

  • It is very interesting to read about a jasmine that is not heady but works as a whole to a cold tropical fragrance. This is something to try as I love jasmine and this review is intriguing. Don’t have a favorite House of Matriarch as I haven’t smelled any. I’m in EU.

  • aurora_ru says:

The most interesting thing to read about L’arivee was the fact, that is masculine and for hot climate. I am not a fan of white florals, as they may turn into indol. This jasmine, supported by sandalwood and frankinscence, sounds like something completely different. I have not smelled any House of Matriarch perfume, but I think Kazimi and The Longing would be my favorites. Thank you for the generous draw! I live in the EU.

  • This sounds gorgeous. I adore jasmine. This one sounds like it would have a different twist. My favorite is The Longing, as it is also the only one I’ve been lucky enough to try! Thanks for the review and draw. Obviously I need to catch up on this line.

  • I like tropical flowers and jasmine is one of my favourites. Great review.

I’m in Canada. Thanks for the chance.

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Thanks for the review! Jasmine (Jasminmum Officianale also called Poet’s Jasmine, in Urdu we call it Chambeli) is the National flower of our country & cultivated in abundance. Love the perfumes having jasmine as a note. The last two sentences in the review are impressive.
Thanks to House Of Matriarch for the generosity and CafleureBon for the opportunity. Love from Pakistan

  • Wonderful read. Love tropical scents so this really appeals to me. Thanks for the draw! I’m in Canada

Very sexy scent it seems. I like any scent that reminds me of hot summer nights – although I dislike the summer sun on most days, I really love summer nights, even when they are sticky and uncomfortable – probably because there all smells bloom in this weather. I love tropical florals and of course I adore jasmine. It’s intoxicating. I am in the US. I haven’t tried a House of Matriarch perfume yet, I’m hoping to save up this summer so I can try a bunch of samples from a lot of the cooler brands you mention 🙂
