New Perfume Review: En Voyage Perfumes Fiore di Bellagio + A Carnation for The First American Flapper Draw

Fiore di Bellagio Bottle

Last year Shelley Waddington of En Voyage perfumes collaborated with ÇaFleureBon Editor-in-Chief Michelyn Camen, to create Zelda . The perfume was inspired by the life of Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald, the talented, tempestuous wife and muse of author F. Scott Fitzgerald, who dismissed her artistic and literary accomplishments throughout their marriage. En Voyage's Zelda was a prizewinner and a big hit with  fragrance fans. This year she decided to go deeper into the world and history of the First American flapper and think to about fragrances from the Roaring 20s that Zelda might have actually worn. She chose the iconic Caron Bellodgia, composed by Ernest Daltroff, 1927. The resulting perfume  Fiore di Bellagio was over a year in the making and the inspiration and the scent story told by Shelley Waddington can be read here

Flapper by M. Montedoro

Fiore di Bellagio takes its cue from Caron Bellodgia, but it is not a replica. Ms. Waddington wanted a similar vibe to that presented in Zelda; a modern twist on a bed of vintage. It has an opening zing of citruses on a bed of sumptuous ylang ylang, like an olfactory amuse-bouche to open up your senses. As the carnation, enhanced with spices and the richest of florals, throws its arms open wide, the sillage bursts forth like a song and you are lost in a swoon. Women smoked back in the flapper age almost just to have a sexy prop, and I can almost smell the smokey addition to the sensuousness of the perfume. The spiciness of carnation weaves throughout the drydown, tossing out wafts of darker, more resinous and animalic aromas. Longevity is great; I put it on two evenings in a row and in the mornings could smell a trace.

I love many of Ms. Waddington’s perfumes but I think this is her finest creation to date. Sitting on my sofa letting this lush, complicated perfume float around me, was blissful.

Notes: Italian Lemon and Citrus, Green Leaves, Ylang Ylang, Spicy Carnation; Gardenia absolute, Jasmin absolute, Bulgarian Rose Otto, Muguet, Violet, Bois de Rose, Dark Vanilla, Antique Sandalwood, Iris Florentine (Orris absolute), Costus Oil, Vintage Resins, Civet and Musks

I received my sample from Shelley Waddington of En Voyage Perfumes.

Tama Blough, Managing Editor.

  • I always I assumed I didn’t like carnation fragrance because I don’t like the way the flower looks — but was bowled over when I realized it’s my speed of spicy and not sweet. Thanks for the draw! I am in Canada. 🙂

  • I am interested by the carnation and spices, they sound absolutely delicious. I like the period as well, it was a firm favorite of my mother who played the music of this era a lot. • I love Shelley’s work- She really impressed me with her ‘gourmand’ range, the Cocoa..Vanilla. Can’t remember the titles but they were super, super super! Punchy ! So I’m sure this delivers as well. She is a talent to be sure. I do love the sound of this blend, the carnation and spice and those resinous base notes- Wow! I am salivating 🙂 I am international. Lovely review and thank you for the draw.

  • It’s difficult these days to find current formulations of perfumes that are carnation-y enough for me — but this one sounds very promising! I’m in the US; thanks for the draw.

  • Smoky carnation with an animalic twist? Well, never put my nose in anything like this. And I still haven’t tried the recognized Zelda.
So, please, count me in! I am in the EU, Bulgaria. Thanks for the chance!

  • Fazal Cheema says:

I remember the previous article Cafleurebon psoted about this fragrance and how it is inspired by Caron Bellodgia…I expect this fragrance to especially focus on carnation note which has more or less disappeared from modern perfumery, thus, i am excited. I have not tried any en voyage perfume so far but may do so in the near future. thanks for the lovely draw. i am in the US

  • MikasMinion says:

  • It is a great pleasure to read again about Fiore di Bellagio on Cafleurebon. Shelley’s Waddington En Voyage is certainly among the best in American perfumery, thus my pleasure even greater. I love Shelley’s work and all the perfumes I have tried are amazing. Durango, Vents Ardents, Go Ask Alice, my beloved L’Hombre, Chocolate Souvenir Trio, with my special attention to irresistible charm of violets in Indigo Vanilla… All of them are beautiful fragrant stories inspired by different things, expressed with fabulous combinations of precious raw materials. Sometimes I feel that Shelley creates perfumes just for me. Fiore di Bellagio as another chapter of the Zelda Fitzgerald’s story found the invocation in her character, but also in Caron’s classic. In earlier review we read “Zelda (the perfume) took on a life of her own…“ Fiore di Bellagio has already started a similar life as a winner of Top Artisan Fragrances of the year Awards for best aroma, best ingredient combinations and others. List of raw materials used in Fiore di Ballagio is so respectable and I’m not surprised with its great longevity. Spicy carnation and all the lovely, but powerful flowers, exceptionally rich and animalic notes in the base enable me to imagine Zelda Fitzgerald wearing Fiore di Bellagio.

Would night be tender with Fiore di Bellagio? Very likely, especially according to Zelda’s standards.

    I’m in Croatia. Thank you.

  • How exciting, Shelley! I think I’m going to love Fiore di Bellagio because I not only have a thing for anything carnation but I’m a huge lover of vintage Bellodgia. So far, I haven’t found an En Voyage scent that’s perfect for me, but this could well be it!

I live in the U.S. Thanks so much for the draw.

  • I have Zelda and love it which makes me all the more curious about this one. I am in the EU.
