Killing Time: Vogue Italia 2011 Lucia Giaconi

Sometimes life gets so complex. There are too many things to do and not enough time to do them. Your smartphone, tablet and kindle stop working all at once. People you love struggle. You struggle. Your mind is racing and you long for simple solace. A good book. A  walk on the beach. Meeting an old friend in real time. Eau d’Italie’s  Morn to Dusk,  which is one ot the most comforting scents I have smelled this year.

Sebastian Alvarez and Marina Sersale of Eau D'Italie

Creative Directors  Sebastian Alverez Murano and his wife Marina Sersale chose Annick Ménardo, who has a voluptious and rich olfactive signature, as the first female perfumer for Morn To Dusk, their 11th fragrance.

Annick Ménardo is the perfumer behind many iconic fragrances; her perfumes include  Bvlgari Black, Dior’s Hypnotic Poison, Diesel’s Fuel for Life, Le Labo’s Patchouli 24 and Le Labo Tokyo City Exclusive Gaiaic 10, Lolita Lempicka, Guerlain’s Bois d’Armenie to name a few.  With Morn to Dusk, Ms. Ménardo brings us “the Italian way to Vanilla: simply irresistible.”

Morn to Dusk starts with a bouquet of muguet, light as air and giddy with happiness, and then a silky smooth and sweet vanilla moves front and center.  A hint of heliotrope brings a slight gourmand quality, like rich vanilla gelato.  Gently, Morn to Dusk matures into a deep, woody vanilla with just a hint of powder beneath.  It is at the drydown one feels bathed in a healing gold light. You will find some comfort here

Notes: Bergamot, Lily of the Valley, Bourbon Vanilla, Cedarwood, Musk

Writer’s Note: I had the misfortune of being involved in a car accident the day I was wearing Morn to Dusk . During what was a very stressful time that left me feeling frazzled, I found myself repeatedly lifting my wrist to my nose and breathing deep.

I’m so sorry you were in a car accident but how wonderful that Morn to Dusk helped with that frazzled feeling.

The perfume artisans have incredible history and lineage. This has t be very special. Vanilla and heliotrope, and a dash of giddiness.

    Lovely.

In the USA, haven’t experienced other Eau D’Italie perfumes, still a bit of Black Violet Private Reserve left. Yearning to find the next one.

  • Glad you had something good to calm you in a difficult moment, and hope you are okay. I’m a counselor and my clients give compliments on vanilla fragrances that aren’t too cloying. They are very sensitive about smells. I haven’t tried any of their fragrances so I do not have a favorite. I like Home fragrances like Belle Fleur Palo Santo candles to calm me. I live in the U.S.

  • I love the idea of comfort in difficult times — the reason for it saddens me, however. I do believe in angels, and vanilla has always been a comforting scent for me, one that’s both warm and familiar. I’m a huge fan of anything rose, and when I need comfort, those are the scents (along with a very old vanilla oil I’ve had for years, when I used to teach).

US Resident. Sending love your way.

For comfort I always reach for a gourmand. Almost always that gourmand will be vanilla heavy. Intense Cafe is a favourite comfort blanket of mine. Pasteum Rose is my favourite from the line but I believe if I get the chance to sample it then Morn to Dusk could well overtake it. I’m in the uk thanks for a great review.

  • Ack I’m sorry about your accident, Michael and I hope you are doing all right. To be able to focus on a soothing scent at such a time is a wonderful thing. Morn to Dusk sounds lovely and I would like to try it as I like several perfumes by Annick Menardo, especially Dior Hypnotic Poison which is a perfect perfume to wear when I’m in need of some TLC. I also like Eau d’Italie perfumes, especially Pasteum Rose. I’m in the US; feel better, Michael, and thanks to all at Eau d’Italie and CaFleurebon for another great draw.

  • Annick really looks like an Italian Diva in the picture. My favorite Eau d’Italie creation is the signature perfume Eau d’Italia. I am in the US. My TLC perfume may be Dior Eau Sauvage because the vintage version is so uplifting and it also has that cooling effect on the body. thanks so much for the wonderful draw and I hope Michael, you are doing well now.

  • Oh thank god you’re ok. Pay attention to your body as the physical stress may not manifest right away. I have never had the opportunity to explore this house, so would love to try this it sounds “heavenly”! When needing comfort I inevitably “go for Guerlain”..so a Shalimar or one of the L’instants. I live in the USA

  • My favorite Eau d’Italiie is still Jardin du Poete. 🙂 My comfort perfume would be something decidedly vintage. No particular one. USA

  • hope you are on the mend! I agree life gets too complicated and so does perfume. I love vanilla perfumes and Morn to Dusk sounds lovely especially since Annick Mènardo created it. I love the idea of a golden healing light and enjoyed watching the Sarah McLoughlin YouTube videos of Arms of an Angel. When my Aunt passed away I played it over and over again.my favorite EDI is Au Lac
    Thanks I live in US

  • I’m sorry to hear about your accident Michael. I hope you did not get hurt.

My go-to TLC perfume is ELDO’s Like This. It just has a very cozy and comforting aura. It’s especially good on a cold, winter day.

I’ve never tried anything from the Eau D’Italie line but anything by Annick Menardo is worth trying, I feel. I love her Bvlgari Black.

Thanks for the draw. I’m in Canada

  • I hope you feel better soon. Car accidents are nothing to fool with, for sure.
That picture of Annick Menardo – holy cow is she ever beautiful!
Have not yet been able to try Eau D’Italie, but I loved Bulgari Black, and so would love to try anything by someone who can create that sort of fragrance.
Look after your self! Best wishes for a speedy recovery,
    Carole

  • Hi! I’ve never tried Eau d’Italie, but Pasteum Rose sounds amazing as does Morn to Dusk. I wear Shalimar for comfort as it reminds me of my grandmother. I’m in the US.

  • My favorite Eau D’Italie is Baume du Doge. I live in Tucson, AZ. When I need some TLC, I often go for Chambre Noire by olfactive Studio.

  • I don’t have a favorite Eau d’Italie fragrance yet, but I am a huge fan of several Menardo creations, especially Bois d’Armenie. This one sounds like a fantastic comfort scent. I live in Seattle, and I usually reach for Parfum Sacre when I need some TLC. Thanks!

  • I’ve never experienced Eau d’Italie’s line before, but Morn To Dusk sounds delightful! I love how fragrances can have such an impact on our emotions. When I need to relax, I tend to reach for rich, almost overpowering scents. A few of my favorites include Nest’s Midnight Fleur, Olympic Orchid’s Seattle Chocolate, and Atelier Cologne’s Santal Carmin. I live in the MidwestUS.

  • I live in NYC in the USA. I’ve never had the pleasure of sampling anything from this line, but of course I am very familiar with the perfumer – indeed, Bvlgari Black is one of my all time favorites. When I’m blue or out of sorts I I reach for something effervescent and refreshing – such as 4711. Always stimulates!

  • Hope you get better soon, Michael.
I noticed everytime I want to relax, feel comfortable with myself I wear Philosykos by Diptyque or Chanel Sycomore.
My favorite Eau d’Italie is Bois d’Ombrie.
I live in the US, thank you!

  • I am sorry to hear that you had an accident! I hope everything is ok! Lots of hugs and love!

Regarding Eau d’Italie, I have not tried anything from this house. Morn to Dusk looks like the perfect start! For calming effects, I usually go with a heavy incense fragrance like Encens Flamboyant.

I am from EU. Thanks for the draw!

  • Acqua Decima would be my favourite.
My tlc perfume is Aromatics Elixir.
I live in South Africa, though I do have a UK address.
    Thank you

  • Commisserations on your accident, but glad you came through intact. My favorite I will probably misname, as I’m going from memory, but I think it is Du Lac? My comfort scent usually involves lavender. I know it’s not a favorite note for many, but it makes me feel like someone has wrapped a blanket around me. My fav is Roxana’s Illuminated Vera. This new Morn to Dusk sounds really beautiful, I would love to try it. i am in the USA. Thank you.

  • Eau de Italia is my favorite from this house and when I need some TLC, a comforting perfume is Emanuel Ungaro’s “Senso” a warm and truly comforting smell of warm vanilla. I am a registered reader in EU, many thanks for this wonderful draw

  • Michael, so glad you’re okay! Accidents always make me feel a bit shaken up, so I’m glad you had something comforting with you (on you?) For my own comfort I often turn to Bois des Iles. I have not smelled anything from Eau d’Italie but Paestum Rose gets rave reviews and of course Ms. Menardo is a master perfumer. I love vanilla in all its incarnations (boozy, sweet, woody, etc) and would love to try Dawn to Dusk. I’m in the USA and thanks so much for the draw.

  • I hope you are safe and sound after the accident and I am sorry it happened to you. On the bright side, scents do have an amazing effect on the human psyche. so it was a great that you were wearing Morn to Dusk and it had such a comforting, soothing effect. Sending big warm hugs!

I did not had the lucky chance to try any of the Eau d’Italie creations but I hope I will.

My perfume when I need TLC is Simply by Clinique.

I am a registered reader from the EU.

Thank you very much! Wish you all the best! Take good care of yourself!

  • For a tender and calming scent I go for L’heure bleue….or Teint de neige. From Eau d’Italie I onlu know Acqua Decima which is perfect for warm days but I don’t know the whole line. I’m in EU.

  • I hope you’re OK, Michael!
My fav Eau D’Italie is Au Lac, and my go-to comfort scent is Oud Shamash by The Different Company.
I live in Canada, and thanks for the draw.

  • I hope you are back to full health soon Michael and that you have someone to tend to your needs. A lovely scent will keep your spirits high!
Unfortunately i have not sampled any Eau d’Italie scents as yet.
TLC perfume for me is Ginestet Botrytis – a cloak of comforting loveliness. Take care – from the UK. thanks.

  • I’m sorry about your accident… I have never tried any of Eau d’Italie perfumes, but I would very like to win Morn to Dusk, because from the review it sounds fantastic. The gourmand scents are the most comfort scents to me. I’m a registered reader. I live in Europe. Thanks for the draw.

  • It’s really true that beauty, in all its forms, can provide such comfort in painful and stressful moments. I think smell, as such a basic and animal sense, is probably under-used in the healing arts. I love knowing that a perfume could make a difference for you in a tough experience. As usual, I don’t have a favorite Eau d’Italie perfume because I just haven’t been able to try any yet. I find wearing perfume, in general, comforting and centering. But if I had to choose one scent, it might be Hiris. The coolness and earthiness of its notes are immediately calming for me.

  • My big favorite Eau d’Italie perfume is Paestum Rose.
For some TLC: a bit of Vanitas by Profumum Roma or Dolcisssssimo by Hilde Soliani…

    Europe.

  • I have not tried an Eau d’Italie perfume, but Jardin du Poete has citrus, basil, and angelica which are some of my favorite notes. I have to mention that Eau d’Italie’s bold graphic look is a favorite for me, too. I am in the US. Recently my comfort scent has been Vanille Galante.

The art and video elements in this review are fabulous. Vogue Italia and Sarah MacLachlan’s create a beautiful mood together. Michael, I enjoyed your review and the reminder to take time to breathe deeply and relax, especially when in need of comfort. I am sorry to hear of your auto mishap and hope all is well for you and will be sorted very quickly.

  • My favorite tlc perfume at the moment is this vanilla perfume oil that I own. I love the way it works on my skin and I’ll have it in my collection forever! I haven’t tried any scents from this house but they sound very good and I might to in the future. I’m in Canada and thanks for the draw!

  • Sorry about the car accident. I hope everything is fine.
I haven’t tried all Eau d’Italie fragrances but I love Paestum Rose and Jardin du Poete. B. Duchaufour is behind them. I love many fragrances he has created. Morn To Dusk seems very nice. Lily-of-the-valley is beautiful in perfumes. I am curious how it goes with vanilla. I appreciate Annick Menardo’s creations with extra love for Jaïpur Homme. My comfort scents are Mohur, Bois des Iles, Fiore di Bellagio, Erdenstern. I’m in the EU, Croatia. Thank you.

  • Sorry to hear about the accident, but glad to hear you found something soothing to help you in such a time. Scents truly can be a balm for the soul and mind.
Like many others, vanilla is the no 1 comfort scent, but exactly which one depends on the day and mood, really. Something light and calming on a summer evening when trying to fall asleep or something warm and sweet to pick me up on a cold, dark winter day. Depends on what kind of comfort I need. Sometimes I like a simple lavender, which reminds me of a newly made bed, even if I really didn’t like that note before. Other than that, I find nature scents, like moss and water but nothing too heavy, comforting, either the real deal, going outdoors for a quiet, solitary time in the forest, or as perfume indoors so I can close my eyes and dream about the outdoors.
Haven’t tried any of their perfumes yet, but this one is actually on the top of my list of Eau dd’Italie scent I want to try so fingers crossed…
    I’m in the EU.

  • My favorite Eau d’Italie perfume at the moment would be Jardin du Poete. I love the combo of citrus and green notes and it makes for a wonderful scent. My current scent I enjoy when I want some TLC is Infusion d’Homme by Prada. Although it isn’t complex or fancy, I really enjoy the clean and soapy vibe and it works very well on me.

I am in Canada and thank you so much for the draw.

  • My favorite Eau d’Italie perfume is Au Lac. I really don’t have a particular go-to perfume when I need comfort, but I discovered that musk and amber based perfumes help me chill out the most!
I am in Bulgaria (EU). Thank you for the draw!

  • I’m sorry to hear about your car accident, Michael, and like all the others here I send good wishes for good health and a quick recovery (even if it’s only from the shock of the event).

Isn’t it wonderful, though, how scent has the power to influence even traumatic physical situations? The smell of nettle tea is perhaps the most calming scent in the world to me (perhaps because I often drink it before bed), but the most comforting perfume I own is Balenciaga Paris. It may not be niche or particularly distinctive, but there is something so soothing about its creamy powderiness.

I also find heliotrope very soothing so I think I’d like Morn to Dusk very much. It sounds lovely, actually, and almost edible! Thanks so much for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • (Sorry – I should have added, I haven’t had the chance to try any Eau d’Italie fragrances yet, though I’ve heard great things about Paestum Rose. I am, however, a fan of Ms. Menardo’s work, so this draw is doubly appealing!)

  • I’m sorry to hear about your car accident, glad you had some comfort, and wish you well.

Vanilla has always been the most comforting scent for me–powdery, with heliotrope, or spicy and warm, or ambery or caramel-tonka-y, or boozy, or deep and woody, or creamy and edible and softly primal. Ecco Bella’s Bourbon Vanilla and Perlier’s Vaniglia were two old (discontinued) favorites.

But when I need to ground and focus, OJ Woman, KM Genie des Bois, and Caron Pour Un Homme have a kind of forested greenness which I find restoring, on top of warmth.

Sienne l’Hiver is the only one I’ve tried, and I really enjoyed its subtle earthiness.

    USA Thank you

  • Nice article! I think you have a piece of good knowledge of various types of perfumes. This is one of the best review articles about morn to dusk perfume. I have decided to give it as a gift to my girlfriend. Thanks for your informative article.
