A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of smelling some Iris Gris de Jaques Fath at the home of a friend with many samples and bottles of vintage fragrances. We had a lot to smell that evening, but I do remember how modern it seemed, but rich and full-bodied. I had asked if he had this scent because I knew I was going to be reviewing the new fragrance from Dawn Spencer Hurwitz, Scent of Hope, which is a loving recreation of Iris Gris.

Scent of Hope came about when one of Dawn’s clients, who was ill with cancer, asked her to recreate her beloved Iris Gris. Dawn has gone through the process of reverse-engineering vintage perfumes in the past but  this fragrance is especially meaningful and special. She had a bit of extrait in her scent museum, so she had enough to work with. Iris Gris, released in 1947, is an iris-centered perfume that has been softened with a peach note to keep the scent from being chilly. Part of the process was finding ingredients that could replace the animalic musk and civet properly, since most perfumes of that era used real animal extracts. Working carefully, and skin-testing early stages to see how the composition was working on her client’s skin, Dawn gradually added the more subtle floral notes that makes Iris Gris so captivating.  Realizing that she had something special, she asked her client about a wider release, which was granted.

"Girl With Peaches" by Lashkevich Alexey

Scent of Hope begins with a gorgeous ripe peach note that is kept from being overly sweet and juicy by the smooth, cool orris and light doses of bergamot and lemon. There is a touch of violet hovering in the air. Beautiful and tender, this perfume brings to mind softly rustling silk and the kind of style that is refined yet casual. I like it because although it brings easy elegance to mind, it still wore perfectly with a tunic and capris and added a bit of glide to my step. Dawn carefully blended notes of muguet, heliotrope, lilac, jasmine and carnation to provide a bouquet that would not overwhelm the peach and orris notes, but support them.

"Iris Reflections" by Lena Karpinsky

Although this is based on a vintage fragrance, and my brief whiff of Iris Gris can attest that this is a lovely reproduction; it still smells quite modern, like Iris Gris did. There is definitely that “vintage vibe” so sought after these days, but Scent of Hope has no aldehydic blast up top that many perfumers use to replicate the aura of perfumes from yesteryear. This is just downright lovely, and all iris fans need to try it.

  • Thank you so much, Michelyn and Tama for your delightful review and for spreading the word about Scent of Hope. It is a project so near to my heart; not only that we can help folks who need our love and support but also to re-create a legend that so many modern perfume enthusiasts would love to enjoy. I am very grateful to be able to make this dream a reality and that Cafleurebon can share in it.

Fath Iris Gris continues to evade me even though i have gotten lucky in getting some other rares like Nombre Noir and Coty’s original Chypre (cologne formula) though…i am interested in this because this is the first time someone has tried to seriously reproduce it..Fath’s new owners also claim to do so but their attempt has not been very successful..thanks for the draw..i am in the US

  • I’ve never smelled Iris Gris, but I’ve read about it and I am intrigued. I’m curious about how the reconstruction is.

What seems appealing about Scent of Hope is Tama’s well written description of it as a smell that has the kind of style that is refined yet casual.
Easy elegance is the style that I usually follow as my dress code so I believe that it must be the perfect perfume to wear as well.
I have heard about Jaques Fath Iris Gris but unfortunately never has the chance to smell it.
I live in EU and I thank you for this lovely review & draw.

  • I’m in the US and I love all things iris, so I always try to sniff new ones–hence the appeal. I have never smelled Iris Gris but have always wanted to. Thanks for the draw!

  • The peach in this sounds amazing. I also like that part of the sales will be donated. I live in the U.S.Thanks for the draw.

  • I have never smelled the LEGENDARY Iris Gris. It’s a pity , because I’m a big iris lover (my favourite iris fragances are Iris Silver Mist and Iris Nazarena). I don’t know how could Iris Gris be, but it’s curious that I prefer to wear grey (gris) clothes when I wear iris fragances. I’m very curious about this recreation!

  • I never heard of Jacque Fath Iris Gris, so I’m sure I never sniffed it. But I do love iris. So this would be a great gift. USA

  • I have never smelled the original but DSH’s interpretation sounds wonderful. I had a tiny decant of Iris Silver Mist which I enjoyed while it lasted. The story behind the recreation is beautiful as is DSH’s generosity in sharing the proceeds with Sense of Security.

  • I have read so much about Iris Gris, with such regret that it is no more.
It is so wonderful that a modern perfumer takes the classic combination of notes and adds a personL interpretation. I would love to sample Scent of Hope.
I am in Australia, thank you for including international readers.

  • Claire Sprigmore says:

I would love to try Scent of Hope, what a delightful name and a great background story. I am crazy about violet in all things perfumery and also foods and would be curious to experience the violet against the peach and iris. I live in the UK.

  • Iris and peach – I would love to sniff! I have not smelled Iris Gris, but frequently the actual ‘classics’ have not lived up to my expectations and I would most probably prefer this descendant 🙂

  • I have smelled Iris Gris and I would love to smell anything that can replicate that blend of cool and warm. I am in the UK

  • Iris Gris is such a legend that it is any perfumista’s dream to smell it at least once in a lifetime. A recreation by DSH is bound to be interesting (at the very least) and chances are it will even be a great perfume in its own right. A marriage between lactonic peach and dry Iris sounds like a good match. The story behind the making is very touching.

ps. the advertising picture of Iris Gris is haunting! WOW!

  • Jennifer Smith/bookwyrmsmith says:

I love both notes! I’ve heard so much about the vintage Iris Gris and have tried and liked or more frequently – LOVED other scents that Dawn has done that it’s easy to say ” I want to try anything she puts out in perfume” . I’d love to be entered in the drawing . I live in the US.

  • Dawn is my favorite perfumer – I own more of her fragrances than I do any other ‘house’ – whose gift for creating amazing scents is matched by her warmth and her generous spirit. I own and love many iris scents; I have heard so much about the legendary Iris Gris, but have never had the good fortune to come across a sample. It never occurred to me until now that despite owning more than 20 DSH scents (and countless samples), I don’t think I’ve yet sampled one of her iris fragrances! I’m sure Scent of Joy will be a huge success.

Thank you for the opportunity of the draw. I live in the US.

  • FearsMice says:

I love that Dawn has used her prodigious talent to make a dream come true for her client–and for extending it to all of us (including me) who’ve never had a chance to smell the fabled Iris Gris. I’m in the US; thank you for the draw.

  • The questions should be What do you love or appeals to you about Dawns fragrances, not just this one. The answer is simply EVERYTHING. I am always wowed by Dawns creations. Looking forward to trying this one also. I am sure it will be another master piece. Thank you so much

  • orris softened by other notes is always a plus in my book. Vintage perfumes are so rare and many people don’t get the chance to experience them. It is so nice to have a talented perfumer to recreate it for you that does the original justice. I have never smelled the original Iris Gris before. I’m in the US and thanks for the draw!

  • I love the backstory behind the creation of this perfume. Dawn’s perfumes are so lovely. she is a true artist. I never have smelled the original but I’m sure I’d love this version. I am in the US and thanks for the draw.

  • I have never had the chance to try the original Iris Gris, but the resurrection sounds like perfect match for me, especially with the orris-violet-carnation combo! I am a bit touchy about muguet in fragrances, but it doesn’t hurt to try, right?
Thank you for the chance to try American natural perfumery out of the USA. I am in the EU, Bulgaria.

  • I’ve read about the legendary Iris Gris, but doubt I’ll ever have the chance to smell it. I’ve only just learned to love iris in perfume, so I’d love to try Scent of Hope, and the fact that proceeds are going to a good cause is added incentive. I’m in the US.

  • Have never smelled the legendary Iris Gris. Iris figures in so many of my favorite fragrances, particularly the Guerlains, and I have a soft spot for the classics. Love many of Dawn’s scents already, both traditional and modern. I hope this one is hugely successful! I’m in the US.

  • This sounds amazing, but what also appeals to me is that it benefits a worthy cause. I never did smell Iris Gris, just read a bit about it. Would love to try this! Thanks. I’m in the U.S.

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

What an art to be able to reverse-engineer a legendary fragrance and release the genie from the bottle. I have never smelled the mythical Jaques Fath Iris Gris – it sounds amazing. I live in the US.

  • Dawn Spencer Hurwitz is among my favorite perfumers. I love her Mata Hari which has a vintage vibe and Le Smoking from the Yves St Laurent collection
What a generous and noble gesture to help a client who has Brest cancer and to donate a portion to charity.
Thank you for your kindness and for recreating the much desired Iris Gris perfume

  • I have several DSH perfumes, and I’ve read so many positive things about Iris Gris that I would love to have a chance to try this recreation. I live in the US.
