New Perfume Review: Carner Barcelona Palo Santo + Answered Prayers Draw

sara carner Shyamala Maisondieu

Creative Director Sara Carner and Perfumer Shyamala Maisondieu

Carner Barcelona, which launched its first fragrance in 2011, has enlisted Givaudan perfumer Shyamala  Maisondieu to work her magic on their latest perfume Palo Santo. Mme Maisondieu is one of the noses behind many Tom Ford fragrances' including Velvet Orchid, the plumped up floral cousin to Black Orchid (she has also signed Incognito from Rouge Bunny Rouge and Charogne from Etat Libre d’Orange). In a departure from previous Carner Barcelona scents  from Spanish born Creative Director Sara Carner,  we leave the Iberian peninsula and journey to the dawn of time, when ancients communicated with their gods through smoke “per-fumus”.

palosantowood tree of life

Palo Santo was the sacred wood of shamans as burnt like incense as offerings to the gods

“A sacred wood steeped in magic and mysticism for thousands of years, releases an enchanting aromatic essence that swirls to life in a spellbinding blend that infuses earthy hints of wood and incense. Coveted by shamans for centuries, it is believed that this spiritual wood has the power to protect and usher in good fortune. A faint misting will cleanse the mood and raise spirits, invoking the true purifying virtues of Palo Santo.” (Carner Barcelona)

Palo Santo opens with delicately spiced, warm, cashmere like presence that is immediately calming then mesmerizes with the sweet and spellbinding scent of davana, which has been used both for religious purposes   and an aphrodisiac for millennia. Then the gorgeous and I mean DIVINE aroma of rum seamlessly melds with guaiac wood, followed by a milky accord.   Heavenly tonka transports the senses to a higher plane and takes on a caramelized sheen with just the right touch of sweetness to tantalise just and provides a foil for the woods that is perfectly pitched.

The dry woods dial down the blissful euphoria a notch. The quality of the vetiver is worth mentioniing as this a note that can make a break a perfume for me; here it has a slightly nutty inflection that satisfies and the cedar serves to amplify the woody deliciousness.

Palo Santo evokes an early winter evening by a fire, wrapped in a cashmere blanket, after a day when you feel chilled to the bone. The flames are hypnotically mesmerizing, creating curls of smoke and strange shapes that transport into another dimension.  There is a simultaneous sense of both the familiar and the primordial as if you are experiencing a hallucinogenic dream.

The Dream Gustav Klimt

Palo Santo is the perfect antidote to modern living. It intoxicates with a boozy sensibility, and then soothes the soul with meditative calm. Wellbeing radiates. Spray, inhale and feel a connection to the perfume gods, for surely they have answered your prayers.

Notes: Indian Davana, Rum Accord,  Warm Milk, Paraguayan Guaiacum Wood, Venezuelan Tonka Bean, Moroccan Cedar Wood, Vetyver from Haiti, Dominican Republican Amyris

Love the reference to the smoke gods at the beginning of time … the possibility of fragrance as communication. Palo Santo seems reverential to what was but of course in 2015 it’s about what is, what can be. It’s lovely.

    USA. Thank you.

  • I have always loved Palo Santo for its sacred connotation. Indeed I believe we need more and more help to transcend the rigors of modern living, (or some aspects of it) and more grounding and calmness to assist and focus on our needs and the needs of others.Megan’s review was full of warmth and comfort and very soothing to the soul. This does sound like a very special blend if I may call it that. I do not know this brand but I will put it on my watch list. What beautiful women they both are! I am a US registered reader. Thank you for a generous draw.

  • I loved this: “It intoxicates with a boozy sensibility, and then soothes the soul with meditative calm. Wellbeing radiates. Spray, inhale and feel a connection to the perfume gods, for surely they have answered your prayers.” Lovely review.

Sounds like a scent I need 😉 I’m in the US and have not tried any other Carner Barcelona’s. Thank you.

A perfume that intoxicates and then soothes? Sounds heavenly and those notes sound so comforting I’d love to try this. I’ve yet to try anything from this house. I’m in the uk thanks for a glorious review and the chance to be a winner.

  • When a scent is said to have a cashmere-like quality, it always evokes images of unbelievable softness and rum accords make me think of colorful, exuberant Havana nights. The tone of Megan’s review, fluctuating between quietly cozy and self-indulgent, expertly conveys the blend’s balance and hedonistic appeal.
I live in Canada, and my favorite Carner is Cuirs (also, the only one I’ve tried :). Thanks for the draw!

  • I love tthe all around picture Megan paints; boozy sensibility, well being, calm, kissed by the perfume gods. I am in Florida and love Carner Barcelona Tardes

  • I like the reference to old world shamans and antidote to modern life. I’m in the EU and I’m not yet familiar with Carner Barcelona.

  • What a beautiful review! I have been very impressed with the house of Carner Barcelona. I have sampled most of their line, and although I’m on a bit of a buying hiatus at the moment, I would love to own El Born in the future. This one sounds so great: I love to wear wood scents in the winter, and this line really grabbed me: Palo Santo evokes an early winter evening by a fire, wrapped in a cashmere blanket, after a day when you feel chilled to the bone. It sounds like happiness to me! USA

I have been seeing Palo Santo reviews on forums…As a fragrance that is focused on woody elements, I see this one as an extension of the Cuirs fragrance from Carner. Megan points out it has boozy elements which i didn’t expect and I feel boozy elements add mystery to it as I find it challenging to predict from notes what it may smell like. My favorite from Carner are D600 and Cuirs. thanks so much for the generous draw. I am in the US

  • I love the thought of rum and tonka in a scent! It sounded beautiful with the way you described it! It makes me think of a very warm fragrance, and one that you wear while cuddling up with your significant other. I unfortunately have not tried anything from this line, but I might in the future for sure. I am in Canada and thank you for the wonderful draw!

  • Love the idea that palo santo wood has been burnt like incense from a long time ago.
Interested in Carner Barcelona Palo Santo because it’s described as an answered prayer. I liked the comparison of hallucegenic dream and since Gustav Klimt is my very favorite Artist I loved the images. I had never seen the painting philosophy before. I am not so hot on vetiver so I like that it is nutty and nice in Palo Santo
Please enter me in this contest. I own El Born and Rima XI
    Thanks so much

  • Great description that has me wanting to try this. Interesting in the rum accord with the warm milk and cashmere. 🙂 No favorite, haven’t tried the line. USA

  • pursejunkie says:

Thanks for being so specific about the progression of the scent. I have yet to try any Carner Barcelona perfumes, but Cuirs is on my to-try list. U.S.

  • As someone who studies religion for a living, my interest is absolutely piqued by Palo Santo. Rum is a very important part of many North American religions, and I’d love to discover how it is used here. Megan seems impressed with the rum in this fragrance, and I enjoy reading her reviews.

I have not yet been able to get my nose on anything from Carner Barcelona, but I look forward to it.

    I am in the US.

  • I love guiac wood and vetiver, but I have trouble imagining the combination. This sounds fascinating! I am in the US, and my favorite is Lumiere Blanche.

  • The following paragraph (copied and pasted below) reads and feels like the trail of the perfume… as if it was music… ethereal waves of unctuous words to describe what sounds like a unctuous perfume. A beautiful description highlighted by the fact that you chose Klimt to illustrate it visually. I don´t know the brand but I would love to be introduced to it. I live in London. Thank you very much for your intoxicating words..

  • I always love informative and poetic elements in a fragrance review.
The idea of this perfume as a antidote to modern life is very interesting and makes me want to try it as soon as possible. I need this potion! 😉
CUIRS is my big favorite from Carner Barcelona.

    I live in the EU.
    Thanks for the draw!

  • merrysovery says:

Another lovely review! I especially enjoyed Megan’s description of davana, which I don’t think I’ve seen in a perfume before. My favorite Carner scent is D600, but this one sounds like a contender. I live in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • What appeals to me is that she refers to it as a meditative scent “Palo Santo is the perfect antidote to modern living. It intoxicates with a boozy sensibility, and then soothes the soul with meditative calm. Wellbeing radiates. Spray, inhale and feel a connection to the perfume gods, for surely they have answered your prayers.” Exactly what I need in my life these days, calm, relaxing and meditative. I am already a very big fan of the Carner Barcelona line. The scents are all easy to wear, nose pleasing, nothing difficult to wear or offensive. Always compliment getters each and every time I wear one of their scents. I am in the US and hope that I am lucky 🙂 thank you for the generosity.

  • Wow!! What a great review! I love that davana was used for both religious practices and as an aphrodisiac! How fun! I have only tried El Born and I was very impressed. This is a line where almost all of the scents appeal to me, especially this new one, Palo Santo! Thanks for the draw. I live in the U.S.

  • I’ve never heard of davana before, but any fragrance with a “boozy sensibility” followed by “meditative calm” is calling my name. My favorite Carner is Tardes, and I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • I don’t know the Carner fragrances — yet. But as a lover of almost all things Spanish, I’d love to know more. This review is beautifully written, and seems to suggest many juxtapositions in the fragrance — sexuality/religious practice; the “rumminess” (is that a word?) versus the meditative qualities. I’m in the US. Thanks for the draw.

  • Beautiful review. I have tried a Palo Santo perfume, and I very liked it. But I suppose from the article, that I would love this one much more.
    The notes are sounds fabulous.
    I live in Europe.

  • Elizabeth T says:

This sounds perfect for autumn! The only CB I have tried is D600, and it was gorgeously done. I would love to sample this vetiver-tonka gem. Thanks to CB for the generous draw! A lovely write-up. 🙂

    I’m in the USA.

  • This sounds incredible! The tonka and davana sounds particularly intriguing in this blend.

    I live in the US.

  • This reminds me of the John Singer Sargent painting Ambergris (i know different element) however the mysterious white cloaked figure transported by the smoke from a brazier into ethereal bliss could be the image of this scent. There is age in the incendiary spirit. In the US.

  • I like the thought of perfume as an antidote to modern living with the warm and comfortable fire that still recalls the primo force. Well illustrated by Klimt. I haven’t sampled the Carner Barcelona line yet. I’m in the US, thanks to all concerned for the review and generous draw.

  • I love boozy, cozy, comforting scents like Palo Santo! The image of this scent coming in waves as if it were a primordial hallucinognic dream is quite vivid. This would be my first experience with Carner Barcelona. I am from the US.

  • I think my favorite part of Megan’s review were the Klimt illustrations. They are ones I hadn’t seen before and combined with her descriptions of the scent I am definitely intrigued to try this one. I am in the U.S. Thank you for the draw!

  • I am curious about the rum and milk combination. It sounds so unusual.
Megan’s review got me from the first words, but the last part with Palo Santo being an antidote and a soothing fragrance really put my curiosity on fire. My favourite fragrance from Carner Barcelona is D600.
I am from Eu. Thanks for the draw!

  • Palo Santo a smell antidote to modern times, a perfume that soothes the soul used as means for meditation and inner reflection, well surely perfume Gods have answered my prayers and I would love to experience this divine smell !!!! I live in EU and up till now I have only read the best reviews about Carner Barcelona but never had the chance to experience their creations.

  • Love the review! Rum, tonka bean with milk… definitely sounds like my kind of perfume!
My favotite is D600: beautiful iris fragrance,
Thanks for the opportunity. US resident

  • Lovely review! Sounds like a perfume I’d be most curious to try. Knowing that the cold months are coming — probably too soon as usual — it’s hard to resist the part about how “Palo Santo evokes an early winter evening by a fire, wrapped in a cashmere blanket, after a day when you feel chilled to the bone. The flames are hypnotically mesmerizing, creating curls of smoke and strange shapes that transport into another dimension.”
Haven’t had the pleasure to try Carner Barcelona yet.
    I’m in the EU.

  • Literally everything about this scent appeals to me:
“delicately spiced, warm, cashmere…calming then mesmerizes… aroma of rum seamlessly melds with guaiac wood, followed by a milky accord….caramelized sheen with just the right touch of sweetness to tantalise….”
*pants* It needs to be fall so I can wear this with a soft warm sweater!

I also like the balance between sensual and spiritual:
“It intoxicates with a boozy sensibility, and then soothes the soul with meditative calm. Wellbeing radiates”
    please O perfume gods?

thanks for the review and draw

  • I’m a devoted fan of this house thanks to the reviews I’ve read here on CafleureBon. I own Tardes, Rima & El Born. This one intrigues me very much as I have a special love and respect for Palo Santo oil. I use it in several massage blends that I create for massage therapist clients, and for smudging in my home. It is a very sacred oil to me. This new perfume sounds so perfect for me right now I could use some wellbeing radiated. Great review Megan. I am in the US and yes a registered reader. Thanks to the writers on CaFleureBon for sharing their unique impressions of the perfumes they review.

  • This sentence appealed to me “Palo Santo evokes an early winter evening by a fire, wrapped in a cashmere blanket, after a day when you feel chilled to the bone. ” I sounds like the perfect go to scent when one is looking for comfort.

Sadly I never had the opportunity to try any of the Carner Barcelona creations.

I am a registered reader from the EU.

Thank you for this opportunity! Wish you all the best!

  • This scent sounds enthralling. I love the religious imagery used and this passage in particular: ‘Palo Santo evokes an early winter evening by a fire, wrapped in a cashmere blanket, after a day when you feel chilled to the bone. The flames are hypnotically mesmerizing, creating curls of smoke and strange shapes that transport into another dimension.’
It also sounds like a perfect scent for the autumnal weather that is approaching. I’m a registered US reader and though I haven’t yet had the chance to try an Carner Barcelona scents, my interest has definitely been piqued!

  • It seems that I love all the listed notes so presume that they make a very nice fragrance. It is great to hear about the quality of vetyver because I have a problem with it in many perfumes. Story of sacred tree builds a splendid atmosphere around the perfume. I like D600 and El Born. I’m in the EU, Croatia. Thank you.

  • Wow I love the woody aspects of this scent. It sounds magnificent paired with the rum accord. I’ve never tried any fragrances from this house unfortunately. I am in Canada.

  • sacred woods and ancient gods make for a nice opening. Lightly spiced sounds wonderful and I loved the artwork
    Great review
Usa and I never heard of carner Barcelona but cuirs sounds nice too

  • loved this review, and how Palo Santo is compared to a winter night by the fire! I Need this. My fave so far is tardes. I’m in the US.

  • Great review. I’m liking the sound of this. The rum and woods sounds very nice. I’ve never tried anything from them but might in the future
