New Perfume Review: Bogue Profumo O/E (Antonio Gardoni) + The Silmarillion Draw

Lúthien Escapes the Treehouse

"The walls of the world; and the song of Lúthien released the bonds of winter, and the frozen waters spoke, and flowers sprang from the cold earth where her feet had passed Lúthien"  The Silmarillion.

The Silmarillion, published  posthumously by J.R.R Tolkien’s son Christopher after the success of The Lord of The Rings, depicts Middle Earth in the first Era. So the prequel came after the six books, which may not seem like the natural order of thing as we learned about the beginningof the universe of Ea afterwards.  Sometimes things work like that. First you fall in love with something, then your hunger of learning its history begins. Thus, Bogue’s O/E, released this year is the Silmarillion since to the sensational creation  MAAI.

Bogue Profumo is the artisanal brand created by the Italian genius Antonio Gardoni.  Antonio is an architecht and is a self taught perfumer who creates fragrances that are unlike any others. He doesn’t care about marketing, sales or even the sustainability of the ingredients. I've been a huge fan of Bogue Profumo since day number one and my admiration increased after meeting Antonio personally.

MAAI has been the most challenging  and rewardinf for me since the perfume has many facets that shift and morph into other dimensions. So I was expecting the unexpected from Antonio before trying his new fragrance, O/E which is in the same vein of MAAI, but easier to understand; try to imagine a summer version of MAAI… for me that is O/E!

Silmarillion Movie Lord of the Rings

O/E opens with a wisely blended mixture of citruses, herbs and lavender. A shining lemon conquers the first act with the support of cloves as expected from the olfactive architect. If you ever tried MAAI, you’ll probably guess O/E is made by the same parfumeur. The new creation of Antonio Gardoni is a bitter smell of citrus enriched by subtle herbs and vetiver sharing the same base of MAAI.

Imagine a dwarf swinging his axe through the burning breath of a dragon as geranium shows himself.  Wearing O/E is like reading a fantasy novel. It captures the smell of legend and lore. . Right after defeating the dragon (or just passing by without disturbing him) rosemary and herbs construct a garden with vetiver trees on it. By the way have you ever heard of vetiver trees before? Maybe you will be able to see them in the endless possibilities of Bogue Profumo.

I wouldn’t call O/E a fougere, as with all Antonio Gardoni’s fragrances they defy common classifications. It’s an uncommon take on citruses, herbs, lavender and vetiver. Do not be fooled by the complexity of notes, O/E is  a study in simplexity. Silmarillion was too, wasn’t it? O/E’s longevity and sillage are moderate than the “stays on me for days” MAII… Nevertheless I like it as it  is and  re-applying the scent is like  turning the pages of the novel. MAAI was like an angel and demon at the same time. O/E is just like a bright star … Lucifer before the fall. Bogue O/E is a perfume that you wear only for yourself, if you haven’t tried it, “Moonlight drowns out all but the brightest stars.” ― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings

Notes: Bergamot, grapefruit, lemon, neroli, clove, black pepper, rosemary, thyme, camphor, Lebanon cedar, juniper, pine, cypress, rose, jasmine, vetiver, benzoin, tobacco, resins, sandalwood

Disclosure: I received my bottle from Antonio at Esxence

Editor's Note: MAAI was a CaFleureBon  best of 2014 and it was Berkan’s  favorite artisanal release of last year. Now if you are scratching your head as to what Silmarillion and all the reference to Lord of the Rings has to do with fragrance, here… "There are only two types of people in the world – those who have read The Lord of the Rings and those who should. If you haven't yet read it, just get it and do it” (didn't know we were fantasy geeks too?)  Art direction, quotes and such-MC

  • A review and a reviewer that ties a perfume to the world of J.R.R Tolkien is great!I have read them all several times including The Silmarillion. I have not tried any Bogue Perfume, though MAAI is on my “want to try” list. USA.

  • Thank you for the lovely review.
“Right after defeating the dragon (or just passing by without disturbing him) rosemary and herbs construct a garden with vetiver trees on it… “- sounds amazing!
I love LOTR, it’s something I can read again and again. I also very much enjoyed Tolkien’s “The Hobbit”.
I live in the U.S. and have not yet tried anything from this house.

Like Berkan, I also initially felt by looking at the notes that O/E has taken inspiration from classical fougeres just as MAAI was a tribute to classical chypres. MAAI along with Anubis from Papillon has been among the very few perfumes that have blown me away this year and I am glad I have full perfume bottles of both MAAI and Anubis. Since Berkan feels MAAI’s DNA is also in O/E, I am naturally intrigued.

thanks so much for the wonderful draw. I am in the US.

  • Fascinating review! 1. I read the Lord of the Rings but not the Simarillion. I’ve not tried any Bogue scents, much to my dismay. I’ve wanted to tried MAAI so much! In the US.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Wonderful review! Really looking forward to trying this out whether I’d win the draw or not! The word “simplexity” is fabulous and also drawing me to this scent. That’s quite a hefty notes list and I’m curious to hear/smell how they create a dynamic but not “messy” composition! I have not tried any other Bogue scents yet, but MAAI is on my next luckyscent sample list and has been for a while! I’m a dedicated consumer of the LotR/Hobbit movies…but not a reader (heresy, I know). I’m in the US.

  • I never read any of the Tolkien books, but I have seen the films, because my partner of 14 years is a devoted fan of all things Lord of the Rings. I have not yet tried anything from Bogue, either.

I enjoyed Berkan’s imagining of a rosemary and herb garden with vetiver trees.

    I am in the US.

Yes, I have tried MAAI and would love to try its antecedent.
Yes, I’ve been through the whole Tolkien cannon, from The Hobbit to the Silmarillion. I love that the reviewer thought to use the Silmarillion as a comparison, because though I’ve been, “there and back again,” with J.R.R., when I think of literary prequels my mind unfortunately drifts immediately to the ends of certain V.C. Andrews series. I’m not really proud of that.
    U.S.

  • Never heard of BOGUE and I have only seen the film. Trying to pin a note with a scene from the story is kinda neat. US.

  • I really liked all the connexiona with Lord of the Rings, the lore and the legends! It’s quite an unique comparison! I have never tried any of the Bogue fragrances, but I would love to start with this one! To my shame, nor did I read any of Tolkien’s books, altough I have seen all the movies. I am from Eu. Thanks for the draw!

  • I enjoyed this sentence right here ” Re-applying the scent is like turning the pages of the novel.” That sounds fascinating. I read and loved The Hobbit and all three LOTR books and now I got to get my hands on a copy of The Silmarillion.

It’s the first time I’ve ever read about Bogue Perfume and sadly I never had the chance to try any of the scents.

I am a registered reader from the EU.

Thank you for the opportunity! Wish you all the best!

  • Beautiful review! I have never tried any of Bogue Perfume, but this one sounds wonderful. I have never read any of J.R.R Tolkien book, but I have seen every part of The Lord of the Rings, and The Hobbit movies of course, and I very love them. So I am a Middle-earth fan. I would very like to try this perfume. I’m a registered reader. I live in Europe. Thank you for this lovely draw!

  • I was impulsive enough to make a blind purchase of MAAI and it was beyond anything I had expected. For me, Bogue perfumery is such an innovative brand and Mr Gardoni is truly a gifted artist. Berkan’s review of O/E is definitily pushing the right buttons for me and if ” Wearing O/E is like reading a fantasy novel” sign me up…Anything linked to Tolkien (be it from afar) is a sure winner in my books as he is one author who had a huge impact in my adolescence and of course the movies are amazing!
I live in France. Thank you for this great opportunity.

  • “Don’t be fooled by the notes complexity,,,,O/E is a study in simplexity” I love the way Berman, puts it in order to describe this perfume. Unfortunately, I have never experienced any o’s Bogus’s perfumes. I am registered reader in EU and have only seen the movies from the Lord of the Rings, up till now haven’t read any of the books.

  • I enjoyed finding out that Antonio Gardoni’s fragrances defy classification. I like that. 🙂 I have not a tried a Bogue or read any of the books in the series. US

  • As a Tolkien fan, if “wearing O/E is like reading a fantasy novel”, this perfume appeals to me in a very high degree… An interesting comparison of Berkan.
Never had the opportunity to test Bogue Profumo, but I heard that Mr. Gordoni is a brilliant guy with an “explosive” personality…I’d like to meet him. 😉

    EU here.

  • Haven’t read the books, haven’t seen the movies. Some of the photos and references in the review to such things is foreign to me. That won’t stop me from loving this fragrance. I say that due to looking at the note list. I did enjoy the description of MAAI in the review above. U.S.A.

  • Never tried any of the scents from this perfume house. This ones sounds particularly intriguing to say the least!! I would be fascinated to try this scent just based on the review.
    Thank you 🙂

  • “Lucifer before the fall” – this made sense to me thinking of MAAI and got me even more interested in trying O/E. I have sampled MAAI before and have read every single Tolkien book (and do find the connection a little far-fetched, but after all it caught my attention :-). I agree that everyone should read Lord of the Rings. I’m in the EU. Many thanks for the draw.

  • Excellent review. I’ve never had the opportunity to try the line – this fragrance sounds good.
I read The Lord of the Rings when I was eleven years old and loved everything I could understand.
Thank you for the draw! I live in Europe.

  • I’m a huge Tolkien fan and setting Silmarillion as a background for the review won me over before I even started reading it. Mr. Basoglu does a wonderful job of depicting O/E as mystical and epic and my mind is running wild with ideas of what the Middle-earth smells like (cloves, lots of cloves).
I’ve never tried a Bogue perfume before. I’m in Canada, and thanks for the draw.

  • Genius review tying in LOTR to a fragrance. I read The Silmarillion and all the books and I get what Berkan said it about you fall I love with something then learn about its origins. I have a sample of MAAI but I thought it was really strong so OE sounds perfect a fougere that’s not the word of the day is simplexity awesome way to describe something
I guess my favorite is all the use of quotes from Tolkien that just tied the review up perfectly
US reader and a Tolkienist for years
Antonio Gardoni sounds like he could have his own cult

  • As someone who had trouble “getting” MAAI, O/E sounds more up my alley 🙂 I also love Tolkien. I am in the US, thanks!

  • The description of O/E as “just like a bright star” clinched my desire to try it. I have tried MAAI, and it is certainly unlike anything else in my experience.I’m in the U.S., and I have read The Hobbit and the LotR trilogy, but not The Silmarillion. (Yet.)

  • What I have liked about this review it is it brings me back a lot of memories about reading Tolkien, not just The lord of the Rings, but the lovely The hobbit or the more “complex” Silmarilllion. I think I should read again one of these now I’m older…… I don’t know any of Bogue but if this O/E with notes of herbs and trees can make me feel as I was in a forest with the elf Legolas , Gandalf, Bilbo….then I must try this one!
    I’m in EU.
    Thanks for this draw!

  • marcopietro says:

I belong to the category of people who have read The Lord of the Rings, it has bewitched me like all the other Tolkien’s books I’ve read.
Bring the wonderful imaginary world of Tolkien to the last fragrant Gardoni’s creation, that is full of suggestions and tips that lead me to try O/E.
I consider MAAI the most beautiful scents between new releases of the past year, I am sure that the newcomer is complex, magnetic and solid as the previous masterpiece.
    I live in EU.
Great rewiew and great draw, thanks!

  • I had trouble with MAAI, I guess it was too big for me. “I wouldn’t call O/E a fougere, as with all Antonio Gardoni’s fragrances they defy common classifications. It’s an uncommon take on citruses, herbs, lavender and vetiver. Do not be fooled by the complexity of notes, O/E is a study in simplexity. Silmarillion was too, wasn’t it?”
I love all the Tolkien books and movies and now want to read The Silmarillion. Thank you to Antonio Gardoni and Berkan for a chance for o/e I live in the EU

  • I was so lucky to have had the opportunity to test both Maai and O/E (thank you again Antonio Gardoni) and I can honestly say that I love them both equally, as Berkan writes they are in the same vein. Although I agree that O/E is easier wearable than Maai. I have read Tolkien’s books, but I enjoyed the Hobbit more (also because that book is not as thick as The Lord of the Rings 🙂 I live in the EU. Thanks for this lovely draw!

  • When I was younger, I read Tolkien’s books. Later I watched movies. I like a good fantasy and Tolkien’s books certainly are. Berkan’s review is almost a fantasy itself. I love it. I’ve never tried Bogue perfumes on my skin, but I experienced Maai, a friend of mine wore it. He smelt amazing.
“…a bitter smell of citrus enriched by subtle herbs and vetiver sharing the same base of MAAI.” I’m very curious. I’m in the EU, Croatia. Thank you.

  • I love the vibe of this fragrance. The citrus in it sound divine and elegant. I have never tried anything from this house before nor have I read any of the books. I live in Canada and thank you for the draw
