New Perfume Review: Atelier Cologne Jasmin Angelique + Scent of Summer Swoon Draw

Christophe Cervasel and Sylvie Ganter Cervasel Atelier Cologne

Last month Atelier Cologne debuted the 6th Cologne Absolue in the Collection Matière, Jasmin Angélique.  in a limited quantity for prelaunch in September. Creative Directors Sylvie Ganter Cervasel and Christophe Cervasel were inspired by jasmine blooming in a verdant garden, so perfumer Jerome Epinette took the most delicate white jasmine blossoms and intertwined them with the freshness of citrus and the green crunch of angelica and fig. The resulting fragrance is one of the prettiest that I have experienced from this French house, a scent that is absolutely perfect for summer.

Featuring top notes of lemon, sichuan pepper and angelica, heart notes of jasmine, galbanum and fig, with base notes of incense, white amber and tonka bean, it has everything one would expect to find in a cologne, yet it also has the most wonderful white and dark green contrast, lending a deeply shaded aspect to the heady floral character.

I find myself repeating the same phrase every time I review a fragrance from Atelier Cologne, but it sums up the nature of the fragrances so perfectly that I can think of no better way to describe it. Jasmin Angelique opens with that signature splash of citrus that is so characteristic of cologne. Lemon is juiced beside green fig, with a slight sweetness that steers the perfume away from bitterness. The feeling of the scent is indeed verdant and lush, made more so by the jasmine that quickly begins to bloom atop the pith and peel. It is an exceptionally pretty jasmine accord; pollen laden and ever-so-slightly waxen, then becoming sweeter and more rounded as amber and subtle incense warm it's heart.

Angelica can sometimes take over a fragrance but here it is incredibly subtle, just a slight aniseed lift that acts as an apèritif, whetting the olfactory appetite for more delights. From a distance it is like catching the scent of jasmine on the breeze, close up the dark, resinous depth of galbanum with an almost sticky tonka bean give Jasmin Angelique a shadier aspect.

Atelier Cologne tableau for Jasmin Angelique

“He had prepared for this moment for several months. Each clue would lead her to the next, recalling one by one the places of that magical first encounter. She is finally there. Overcome by the beauty and power of jasmine in bloom, it is apparent their love is ready for the next step.”

One might easily be overcome with ardour whilst wearing Jasmin Angelique, but not in the swooning, hedonist way of some indolic floral perfumes. The subtlety and balance between green citrus, white flowers and dark resins make for a fragrance that is simple enough for sunny summer days, yet multifaceted for those who enjoy complex fragrances. I have worn it the last few days and just felt exceptionally pretty in it. I would recommend Jasmin Angelique for anyone who loves a photorealistic jasmine, anyone commuting to work in sticky heat and anyone who needs a little extra lift. It's impossible not to feel good whilst wearing this scent. It's bright, subtly sensual and satisfyingly green. It will ornament your day with jasmine blossoms and serenade you into the evening. In a word, perfect.

One of my favorite reviews … just lovely perfumery and the selection of art. Jasmine that is balanced with green citrus, and dark resins seems so modern and inviting. Would love this. In the US.

  • I was very intrigued by Susie explaining the Jasmine aspect of the perfume. I do love Jasmine and I am trying to imagine it with citrus and the outcome is extremely delightful. And Fig as well. I think it would work well with my warm climate. My favorite Atelier Cologne is Orange Sanguine. I am a registered US reader.Thank you for the review and draw.

  • Oh just lovely …all my favorite notes of fig, tonka and a non indolic jasmine. Sounds wonderful and the art and review are just so perfect. I love that there is a shady side, cooling and green as well as full floral. PLEASE enter me USA

As I was reading this article, the author’s descriptions about jasmin and citrus made me wonder if this could be considered as a tribute to classic Eau Sauvage which remains as one of my favorite perfumes..here the jasmine is dewy and the citrus is crispy and i almost suspect Jasmin Angelique may have made use of hedione, too..thanks so much for the draw. My fav. Atelier creations remains Orange Sanguine. i am in the US

  • Well this sounds absolutely lovely. The ess laden petals, crunch, angelica, fig… Sounds pretty perfect. I’d love to give this a try. My favorite Atelier is Gold Leather. Thanks for the draw, I am registered and in the US!

  • Lovely review. What captured my attention was her saying that ” from a distance it is like catching the scent of jasmine on the breeze”. That is exactly how I discovered jasmine as a kid. I followed the scent until I found the plant/blossom it came from, then asked what it was. I love Atelier Cologne and have tried more than half of them. I like them all. Right now my favorite is Mistral Patchouli. USA.

  • I gravitate towards floral scents, and I don’t believe I have smelled fig or white Amber before. I am new to niche perfumes (I’ve always shopped at drug stores for perfume) and the description sounds like a perfect summer day. I know I have smelled jasmine but I’m wondering how accurate the scent was. I am registered and live in Canada.

  • Very nice review. I enjoyed to read all of it. I have never tried any of Atelier Cologne, but I suppose, that those are all fantastic scents. I would very like to win. I live in Europe.

My favourite Atelier perfume is Gold Leather. I live in EU, thank you for this lovely review and draw as well.

  • The notes description makes me wants to try it.

    My favorite is Figieur Ardent.

I’m in Canada. Thanks for the chance.

  • Thanks for the review and draw! The angelica note sounds very interesting to me.
My favorite Atelier Cologne is Santal Carmin.

Susie has such a way with words in her reviews. “pollen laden and ever-so-slightly waxen, then becoming sweeter and more rounded as amber and subtle incense warm it’s heart…” A beautiful read! My favorite Atelier is Silver Iris, and I am in the USA. Thank you for the draw!!

  • There’s nothing better than floral scents for the warm weather! Atelier always brings out quality and I really look forward to getting my nose on this. I have so many from the line that I enjoy gosh! My favorite would have to be either Grand Neroli or Silver Iris. I’m in Canada and thank you for the draw!

  • Laurentiu says:

I do not have much experience with fragrances that have angelica in it, but those that I have tried I have found the angelica note be very powerful. I like that here, Susie finds the angelica to be subtle and letting other notes reveal themselves.
My favourite Atelier Cologne is Vetiver Fatal. I live in EU.
    Thanks!

  • I would love to experience the “green crunch of angelica and fig”.
    Sounds delightful!!
My favorite scent, so far, is Trefle Pur.
    I live in the U.S.
    Thanks for the drawing.

I loved her remark that she felt “exceptionally pretty” in the scent. The only Atelier Cologne I have tried so far is Vanille Insensée. I’m in US.

  • Jamin and fig eau de toilette sounds appealing! I like how Atelier Cologne works on very wearable scents perfect for the whole year. My favourite are Cèdre Atlas and Mandarine glaciale. I,m in the EU.
    Thanks for the draw.

  • I enjoyed Susie’s review, especially her recommendation that “it’s impossible not to feel good whilst wearing this scent”. That’s what I need during these dog days of summer. My favorite Atelier Cologne is Rose Anonyme and I live in the US.

  • I’ve never really tried much jasmine fragrances, but this one sounds really pleasant. I’m a fan of Atelier, and love how versatile their entire line is. I’d say my favorite would be Orange Sanguine, especially for summer. I’m in Canada and thanks for the draw!

  • These colognes translate so well in summer weather. I own the Rose and Vanille ones, although actually I prefer them in winter! But the more citrus offerings really shine in this hot weather. Jasmine is a favorite. I like it skanky and I like it green and girlish. This sounds like a lovely summer jasmine to counterbalance some of the jasmine bombs I wear! I’m in the USA. Thanks for the draw.

  • I’m a huge fan of Atelier and particularly enjoy Ambre Nue. Susie’s review made me eager to try this one with her description of the jasmine note in the scent. I am in the U.S. Thanks for the draw!

  • Valentine Girl says:

I can’t wait until this is released and I have a chance to sample it on my skin. The delicate white jasmine, crisp burst of citrus & verdant crunch of angelica and fig immediately caught my attention and I love how Susie explains that it is impossible not to feel good while wearing Jasmin Angelique.
I am a little bit of an “a-fig-ionado” when it comes to fig notes in perfume & I am already a fan of Jerome Epinette’s Verde, so I am curious about his handling of green fig in this one. My favorite Atelier Cologne is Figiuer Ardent, bien sûr! USA resident.

  • Lovely review. The part about “From a distance it is like catching the scent of jasmine on the breeze, close up the dark, resinous depth of galbanum with an almost sticky tonka bean give Jasmin Angelique a shadier aspect” sounds really interesting, like something I long to try myself.
Haven’t tried that many of their scents so I don’t really have a favourite yet. Maybe it’ll be this one?
    I’m in the EU.

  • The shaded green imagery was my favorite part. Although today was pleasant, this past week has been one where refreshing shade was necessary–in perfume as in life!

Plus I’ve been enjoying my star jasmine every day. The breeze wafts the scent and mixes it with cool grass in the morning and sun-warmed pine in the afternoon. I know the jasmine in Jasmin Angelique is probably different, but if it’s the same feeling then it must be wonderful!

My favorite Atelier is Vanilla Insensee.
USA thanks for the review and draw! I’m looking forward to sniffing it in person

  • Greg Mayne says:

I’ve never had angelica in a fragrance before, so I’m very interested in this! I love the floral and green aspects to it, and think it would make a great summer scent. My favorite from Atelier would probably be Gold Leather. I do enjoy Vetiver Fetal as well.

  • JazzBelle says:

It’s quite difficult to describe the scent of jasmine and Susie described it so well. The chosen artwork also complement the review so beautifully!

My favorite Atelier perfume is Sud Magnolia. I’m in the USA. Thank you!
