New Perfume Review: 4160 Tuesdays Centrepiece by Sarah McCartney + A Taste of Honey Draw

Sarah McCartney at Fortnum & Mason launching four 4160 Tuesdays perfumes

As ever with the magical Sarah McCartney the perfumer for 4160 Tuesdays, keeping up with her various fragrant adventures can be a little bewildering. Following 4160 Tuesdays on Facebook will help to keep those interested in her perfumes feeling a little more 'in the loop". I'll admit that even as perfume blogger I am often met with another new creation, yet have no idea where it has emerged from.  Recently, 4160 Tuesdays has taken four fragrances from the extensive collection and tweaked them to be sold exclusively at Fortnum & Mason in London. Three of the scents may be familiar; Tart's Knicker drawer, Sexiest Scent on the Planet (IMHO) and London 1969 are already hugely popular. The fourth fragrance, Centrepiece, is brand new and inspired by a visit to the Fortnum & Mason ice cream parlour and perfume salon.

With notes of frangipani, green tea and honey, Centrepiece evokes a voluptuous  1950s vintage perfume.  It is indeed a smoothly rounded, seductive fragrance, but I found it a little on the dark side…  I was destined to love this perfume as soon as it touched my skin. I cannot resist beeswax and honey notes and Centrepiece drizzles it's languid, pollen-rich nectar out of the bottle and onto my wrist like liquid amber. It reminds me of natural heather honey beeswax my neighbour gave me to polish the furniture.

I have always wished I could spread it all over myself instead of the table. Its scent is deep and slightly bodily, as honey can sometimes be.

In Centrepiece the impression is of skin smeared with fragrant wax. There is a fascinating bitterness from the tea notes that contrasts beautifully with the sweet honey. As the scent develops the tea gets smoky and dark, tinting the amber with streaks of black. Frangipani is a beautiful floral note to pair with all that ambrosial headiness, a gardenia-like, humid white bloom that floats atop the oozing honey heart notes. If one was to catch a drift of this perfume on someone else, frangipani would be the dominant impression. It's not until you bury your nose close to your skin that the bitter/sweet nuances really reveal themselves.

Sniffed from a distance, Centrepiece is a honeyed floral with old school glamour. Up close it is much more complex and intriguing. A bitter, dark stain of tea seeps slowly to mingle with intensely soporific beeswax. The floral note becomes indolic and heavy with dripping honey, whisking you from a sunny beachside afternoon into a steamy evening, the promise of seduction hanging laden in the air.

This will be love at first sniff for anyone who adores a honey heavy fragrance and I would encourage those who usually go for rich, decadent scents to also give Centrepiece a try. However, applied with a very light touch, this could also greatly appeal to white floral lovers with a penchant for a little astringency in their scents. Sarah McCartney may be a mad whirlwind to keep up with, but there is absolute genius in the perfume she produces.

What appeals to me most in your evocative review is the idea of old school glamour from a distance, with a much more intimate and richly evolving experience up close. Just as it should be! My favorite is The Lion Cupboard. It’s the only one I’ve tried, but I think it’s fascinating and beautiful, when a lot of scents are only one or the other. I’ll head on over to instagram right now to follow @4160tuesdaysperfume. I’m in the US, and thanks so much for the article and draw.

I have been hearing a lot about 4160 creations…I would love to try Centrepiece because it has honey and tea notes and has a vintage feel, not surprisingly due to 50s vibe. my favorite 4160 creation is Urura’s Tokyo Cafe. I am in the US.

  • Wow. This is my favorite part.
With notes of frangipani, green tea and honey, Centrepiece evokes a voluptuous 1950s vintage perfume. It is indeed a smoothly rounded, seductive fragrance, but I found it a little on the dark side…
It sounds amazing. My current 4160 Tuesday’s favorite is Sleep Knot.
I love in the U.S. Thanks much for the draw!!

I’m another person who can’t resist beeswax and honey, so that’s what piqued my interest. My favorite 4160 is Time to Draw the Raffle Numbers, and I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • I’d love to try this for what the green tea brings, that’s what caught my attention. 🙂 I haven’t tried any from the line to have a favorite. USA

I recieved a sample of Centrepiece in my Olfactif set and it is gorgeous and on back order. No suprise there, it’s worth a full bottle. I live in the US.

  • The combination of notes sounds great. One of my favorites is The Lion Cupboard.
I follow 4160 Tuesdays on Instagram.

Thank you for the opportunity. US

  • To me, green tea has always smelled very “polleny” so mixing it with honey makes absolute sense. I eould love to smell the end result – mind you, I have had green tea with honey but not in perfume form 🙂

I have yet to try anything from Sarah McCartney.

I am in the US. Thanks for the draw.

  • Beautiful review. I had never tried any 4160 Tuesdays Perfume unfortunately. I would very like to win Centrepiece, because from the review it sounds amazing. The notes sounds very well, mostly the honey note.
    I live in Europe.

  • I love honey bees wax as a perfume note and have not tried any of 4160 Tuesdays scents yet. I love to start with this one! I”m in the US.

I was almost about to post about honey perfume recommendations on facebook! I adore honey fragrances, so this sounds fantastic! I like in that review it said it was a deep, heavy honey. I love Sexiest Scent on the Planet Ever (IMHO.) Beautiful scent. I am in the US.

  • I haven’t tried 4160 Tuesdays yet, so I don’t have a favorite. Looking at their website, I’m intrigued by The Sexiest Scent on the Planet. Ever. as I’m fond of gourmand scents.

Centerpiece sounds good because I like gourmands, and I like florals that aren’t just florals. The scent sounds yummy and wearable.

I love honey and frangipani, but the dark tea notes intrigue me as well. I have sampled about 10 of 4160 Tuesdays and definitely enjoy Sexiest Scent on the Planet Ever (IMHO) and Urura’s Cafe. I think Centrepiece may be my favorite . USA
The reviews on this blog are simply lyrical. and luring… my wallet always hurts reading them

What timing! I just picked up some beeswax from a local small business and absolutely loved the smell! I would love to try this as it sounds gorgeous. Tea, honey, and white flowers, ahhhhhh. I am in the USA… thank you for the lovely draw and article.

  • Tiffany R says:

Centrepiece is actually the one I want to try the most from their catalog (well, that and Doe in the Snow) – I only wish the smaller sizes were sold in the US. I love the smell of honeyed florals and beeswax, so it sounds right up my alley.

    I’m in the US.

  • I love honey in scents and this one sounds delicious! I have not tried anything in this line yet, but Centerpiece seems a good place for me to start! I am in the USA.

  • The delectable, luscious honey center of Centerpiece appeals to me the most! No favorite yet because I have not yet tried any, but Sunshine and Pancake tops the list.

  • I haven’t had the chance to try any of 4160 Tuesday’s scents. They all look very nice but it’s too much to choose, there’s so many. Centrepiece would be a wonderful one to start with. Glamour, white flowers and honey sounds like a delicious compliment to summer time and sun kissed skin. I am in the U.S.

  • Honey and tea are a match made in heaven! And if it veers a little to the Dark Side, so much the better!

Thank you for the draw. I am in the U.S. 🙂

  • Thus far, I haven’t tried a honey centered fragrance that I didn’t love, so I’d love to try this Centrepiece. And I haven’t tried any of 4160 Tuesdays. . .so many perfumes, so little time!! Thanks for the draw. In the US. 🙂

  • Honey, white florals, and tea. Sounds amazing. What I would like about it is that to others it would smell floral – you’d need to get up close to really smell it. I don’t like to announce my perfume to the world – not everyone needs to smell it – but I love to enjoy it and have my husband or anyone who is allowed into my personal space enjoy it as well. I haven’t tried any of the 4160 Tuesdays perfumes. I’m in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • I am always up for a cup of tea with honey! I haven’t tried any of Sarah’s perfumes, and I would be really glad if I win and have the chance to test them!
Thank you for the draw! I am in Bulgaria (EU).

    – I adore this and i have never tried a 4160 fragrance. I am in the USA

  • The bitterness from the tea notes contrasting with the sweet honey appeals to me about Centrepiece. I have not yet had the pleasure of wearing a 4160 Tuesdays Perfume.
I follow Sarah on instagram (@hofken).

  • There are so many perfumes in 4160 Tuesday’s catalogue I don’t know where to start! Since I love honey musky florals I would love to win Centrepiece. That picture of Eartha Kitt is amazing

  • Whoa, whoa whoa! I was just last night thinking that I needed a really great honey scent to round out my collection, and to have it laced with tea would be even better! It sounds highly seductive. I have yet to try any of Sarah’s scents, but I am more than intrigued. I’m registered and live in the U.S.

  • Centrepiece, with all the honey and frangipani sounds very interesting. I love its description “as honey heavy fragrance”. A vintage vibe is welcome. I’ve read many articles on Sarah, 4160 Tuesdays and the perfumes, including the interview on Cafleurebon. All of them show the passion, originality and richness of Sarah’s ideas. One of the best ideas is a collection of The Vintage Cities, my favorite is London 1969. It is so beautiful perfume. I follow 4160 Tuesdays / Sarah via several social networks. I’m in the EU, Croatia. Thank you.

  • Centrepiece appeals to me because: “The floral note becomes indolic and heavy with dripping honey, whisking you from a sunny beachside afternoon into a steamy evening, the promise of seduction hanging laden in the air.” This is everything I want in a perfume, I love where this makes my mind go. I will follow on instagram, and my favorite so far is the delicious Sunshine & Pancakes. I’m in the US. Thanks!
