Editor's note: Quentin Bisch, a Junior Perfumer from Givaudan, is considered by many  industry insiders in  the fragrance world, to be an up and coming Perfume star. You may remember his emotional appearance in Ian Denyer's Perfume Documentaries #2  for BBC, 2011 when he was a Givaudan trainee. I am not surprised one of my favorite Creative Director Etienne de Swardt chose Quentin Bisch for La Fin du Monde, which is Mr. Bisch's first fragrance. -Michelyn Camen, Editor-In-Chief

  • An intelligent review! I particularly enjoyed the description of popcorn as an anchor to the tangible, whilst immersed in the experience of watching a film. Popcorn is also a favourite snack, especially with homemade butter caramel coating!

  • I thought it was rather timely that Stevie Nicks, “Leather and Lace” was playing in the introduction. Perhaps, the last two people on earth, city or mountain, stay with me, stay… coupled with a jug of Le Fin Du Monde the human race might just continue. Cormac McCarthy’s, The Road keeps coming to mind-the foraging for seeds, a speck of this to make that, gunsmoke and a child carrying on. I am hoping that the carrot seed and orris give a hint of Hiris to the mix. How Mr. Bisch worked in the popcorn note is making my mind boggle. Can’t wait to found out!

  • I was glad to read in the review that the popcorn accord doesn’t make the perfume reek of movie theater. Instead, I’m intrigued now, thanks to the review. I am still wondering about the cannon aspect….

  • Alex’s review definitely has me intrigued but I’m still questioning whether I want to smell of popcorn & gunpowder!

  • i laughed out loud at the suggestion of equating the smell of popcorn with the end of the world.

    front seats, anyone 🙂

    p.s.
the armchair is a nice anachronistic touch, too.

  • I thought this perfume review was terrific. Honestly, when i heard about ELO La Fin Du Monde and popcorn I thought it was a big gimmick. now I WANT it. Fascinating that Quentin Bisch went through 200 trials to get the fragrance perfect. I really Enjoy Alex and loved his reference to Monthy Python and a trend in the UK to gourmet popcorn. I’ll take the perfume please

  • An end of the world perfumed black comedy. I definitely would like to try this; popcorn smells makes me sad and nostalgic. Thank you for the great review!

  • I like that he mentioned that this perfume is a perfect balance of pessimism and optimism…also, 200 revisions? My goodness, perfectionism at it’s best. The popcorn note keeps it in a spectator’s point of view, like watching a movie about the end of the world, interesting!!! His review makes me want to try this more:).

  • 200 revisions sounds like a painstaking process,
I’m interested in smelling the popcorn note,
an interesting twist to the end of the world.
    ty

  • the popcorn accord description really makes one wonder how this fragrance may smell…for some reasons, Fracas has always reminded me of melting butter and i am wondering if this fragrance has any resemblance to Fracas because popcorn also has a buttery aroma

  • 200 revisions in 5 months?! Damn! And the part of how this perfume is optimistic and pessimistic in a way….Now I’m really curious!

  • It’s kinda sad really, Shakespeare’s All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players-that being said then i see were the popcorn comes in.Who’s eating the popcorn when the world ends?

  • Both subversive and comforting, sounds good! I love the armchair, the Monty Python reference and I agree that it is indeed enjoyable to watch the end of the world from behind a bucket of popcorn.

  • Nice rewiew! I find is amusing to associate the idea of the end of the world to the smell of popcorn. I feel it a smell so cheerful and nostalgic.

  • Very interesting review. Initially when I read about the composition of this fragrance I was sure I didn’t want to try it. Now I am intrigued and tempted to give it a try. Well, that’s the purpose of a good review, right? 😉

  • The end of the world synonymous with the smell of popcorn? That’s a different take on the apocalypse. 200 revisions in 5 months is insane but if that’s what it takes to make perfection then so be it. Alex has a way with words and how he uses analogies to describe perfumes. Great stuff!

  • I have been so excited for this fragrance ever since it was first announced. The visual of the popcorn exploding with the mushroom cloud was genius. The combination of notes sound insane but I am eager to give it a smell!

  • I love this this is Mr. Bisch’s first fragrance. 200 revisions in 5 months?! He really must be a perfectionist. I loved the review. It makes me really want to try this!

  • Popcorn, ha? excellent review, enjoyed it a lot! Will visit the London boutique to have a sniff myself!!

  • The question is “What didn’t I like?” Most enjoyable! I love the analysis of popcorn as the perfect accompaniment to the end of the world. ‘Tis true! Who doesn’t like the lo brow pleasure of munching popcorn while watching the apocalypse on a humongous screen? Bravo!

  • Really interesting that it took over 200 iterations over 5 months. That’s a lot of work and I really look forward to smelling the result.

  • I would love to wear this while humming “Always look on the bright side of life” 🙂 And now I completely understand the connection between popcorn and the end of the world-thanks!!

  • I liked his observation as to how much work, passion and exhaustion can be required to produce something that is essentially ironic and meant to be light-hearted!

  • Thanks for this. I enjoy that that Alex has been a part of a couple of video draws here recently. Nice to watch and listen.

  • Oh, I love his commentary on the breaking of the 4th wall at the movies as it relates to the popcorn notes. Very thoughtful! I am enjoying this new review format on Ca Fleure Bon. thank you for the draw!

  • Ah, intelligent and thoughtful analysis from Alex – as usual.
The perfume itself sounds great. I can’t wait to try it!

  • susie fankel says:

So many reviews and this review took the popcorn! Maybe it was the end of the world concept but what really had me is the perfume itself and the perfumist. Congrats to Mr. Bisch…he intrigues me.

  • Thank you, Alex, for helping me understand the composition of this perfume. When I first read about it, I didn’t connect the notes to the name. Now it all makes sense and even more, I’m excited to try it. ELdO does it again…has me all a flutter in anticipation.

  • Oh my gosh — Alex, you’re hilarious! I love the idea of this perfume’s theme song being “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.” I now feel as though Le Fin du Monde would protect me in the (inevitable?) event of an Apopcalypse. (Or, as the case may be, a government shut-down.) “Irradiated from behind your popcorn bucket shield,” indeed! I live in the U.S. and thanks for the draw.

  • Interesting review! Should be an interesting combination of notes. The popcorn and carrot seed notes especially make me want to smell this. I am in the US.

  • Beavisbonce says:

Alex me and you go a long way back with fragrance comments on your channel. You’ve steered me from the worst to the best. Etat libre is my favourite niche house and that bottle would be given a happy home. I want it to be a gourmand yatagan, I’ll even settle for burnt cinema upholstery. Please pick me!

  • I enjoy everything about listening to Alex’s perspective. (There was another youtube clip here recently). I would love to win this. U.S.
    🙂

  • Very interesting review, and I enjoyed his description. This sounds great, and is one I’d love to try. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the U.S.

  • Really interesting point of view, would love to try it, most interesting is that he mentions the Monty Python song Always Look On the Bright Side Of Life, that’s awesome! If that is the soundtrack/song for that perfume I’d love to wear it every single day!!!

  • Pablo Hernandez says:

intrigued by popcorn. i quite liked how his review got deep.

    now i smell popcorn.

  • I liked his idea of popcorn breaking the fourth wall in the cinema – it’s absolutely true! Also, 200 revisions is a lot of corrections… I’m eager to try the result 🙂

  • I’m so curious about this one. The note list sounds intriguing and I love the inspiration for the fragrance.

Alex does such a great job with his reviews – thoughtful and informative.

  • Thanks Victoria! Thanks everyone and good luck with the contest. It’s a really fun perfume and I had a ball trying it!

  • Sounds intriguing… I particularly liked the discussion of the intellectual implications of the perfume as it relates popcorn to the apocalypse.

  • tomate farcie says:

Never heard of Blaise Cendrars. . . Only the British can mangle the French language more than the Americans . . Is that “fin” as in fish fin..au secours!

  • “What does popcorn have to do with the end of the world?”
I liked this review! I liked how Alex does ask and then explore this question, and goes deeper than popcorn=movies=trendy apocafilms=trendy perfume

I love ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life’ and would love to wear the perfume version of that song! Life of Brian is my favorite Python film, partly because it has a satisfying ending.
Thanks for the review and draw!

  • I ve never thought that one of the notes used in perfume can be popcorn – it is probably because I do not live in the country where popcorn is used (eaten) in the daily basis. Bur review says that scent is mixed and notes smell unison – so I believe that fragrance can be great addition to my small collection. Thanks for a chance to win it!
