New Perfume Review: Providence Perfume Co. Samarinda + Journey to Borneo Draw

Perfumer Charna Ethier

Charna Ethier of Providence Perfume Co. is a rising star in the indie fragrance world and has been consistently creating beautifully crafted artisan natural perfumes over the past five years. When we learn of a new launch, there is always tons of buzz amongst both natural perfume lovers and niche fragrance enthusiasts. Samarinda is her first fragrance for 2014, and may be her best yet. Named after a city in Borneo, Indonesia, it is composed with ingredients that are as exotic and interesting as its name.

The perfume opens with a bright, spicy blend of sweet orange and cardamom. I enjoy the smell and flavor of cardamom pods, especially when I unexpectedly bite into a whole pod and the taste fills my senses. That aroma is used to nice effect as a top note, and evokes that delightful culinary surprise. As the scent begins to sink into my skin, it becomes more floral, but never loses its spiced heat, thanks to the clove fragrance inherent in carnation, one of my favorite notes. A surprising hint of coffee adds complexity and richness. Further along in the perfume journey, exotic woods, a hit of boozy rum, and a sweet dollop of vanilla create a unique scent aura. I have visted the tropics, but have never experienced the rainforest, which I envision has its own set of smells and sensations. Ms. Ethier has crafted a fragrance that will take you to a place unfamiliar, yet completely welcoming. Samarinda is exceptionally wearable, and alluring.

"The Seashell" by Odilon Redon

One of the ingredients used in Samarinda is roasted seashell, also known as Choya Nakh. From India, it is derived from burnt dry-roasted seashells and in tiny amounts adds just a hint of the scent of hot, salty sand and burnt driftwood. I enjoy encountering this kind of smell, and natural perfumery is where you’ll find these off-the-path ingredients. At full strength, the smell is said to be nearly overwhelming, but in Ms. Ethier's adept hands, just a touch  creates a subtle but definitely present hint of smoky darkness, as if it were the aroma of the dark loamy soil under the rainforest canopy.

Samarinda has amazing longevity for a natural perfume. I put it on around noon and it was still with me late into the evening. It does have good waft, too, although, of course, it lies closer to the skin as it develops. Although it teems with the scents and evocative imagery of the rainforest, Samarinda feels perfectly suitable for any climate

Notes: sweet orange, cardamom, pink peppercorn, carnation, heliotrope, orange blossom, Sumatran coffee, Scotch leather, rum ether, jasmine rice, vanilla oakwood & roasted seashell.

I received my sample from Charna Ethier at Providence Perfume Co. Samarinda is available at Twisted Lily Fragrance Boutique & Apothecary, Beautyhabit, and Providence Perfume Co.

  • Oh, cardamom! I keep a little jar of the pods at my desk at work to uncap when needed. Gorgeous scent. This fragrance sounds just lovely.

  • Lots to love here – cardamom, carnation, leather, coffee, jasmine rice – sign me up. And I’m very intrigued by Choya Nakhon. All this and it benefits a good cause, awesome! I’m in the US, thanks so much.

Thanks to Charna Ethier and to you guys at Cafleurebon . I admire Providence Perfume Co’s ethos.

  • Samarinda sounds fantastic and as a fan of Providence Perfumes I know it’s going to live up to the high praise it is receiving. As to what is appealing, well the fact that it’s all natural for one and I don’t think I’ve smelled a rum note in a perfume before and would love to get my nose on this one. I’m in the US. Thank you!

  • Charna really composes some complex gorgeous scents. I would love to try this one due to the roasted seashell note. I am definitely intrigued! I’m in the U.S. Thank you!

  • You got me at roasted seashell. Sweet citrus and cardamom also sound intriguing. I havent tried many of Charna’s scents, but they all sound incredible! I’m in the US. Thanks for the draw!

Choya Nakh is overwhelming at full strength, and I would love to smell Ethier’s treatment of it, among other things. I am a big fan of Moss Gown. I am in the US, and thank you for the article and the draw.

  • This sounds amazing!! The cardamom is what intrigues me the most.I live in the US.Thank you for such a wonderful draw 🙂

  • Last year, I took a natural perfumery workshop with Charna. She was extremely professional, well-spoken, and inspiring. I would love to own one of her natural perfumes, especially to experience the carnation and choya nakh notes. I live in the eastern U.S. (but I would welcome the chance to be transported someplace WARMER with this fragrance)! Thank you!

  • Lovely review! Samarinda must smell excitingly wonderful !
Thank you dear Tama for the lovely description and also a big thanks to Providence Perfume Co. for taking care and supporting the saving of the Rain Forest and its species.
I am from EU (so please exclude me from the draw). Just wrote to express my admiration.

  • Thank you Tama for the through introduction to Samarinda. I have been waiting all month for this one! As a native of the Sub-tropics, I find the Burnt Seashell accord to be very apealing and comforting. My favorite Providence fragrance (so far) is Branch & Vine! I live in Florida, thank you Charna for this opportunity!

  • I’ve run across choya nakh in other natural perfumery and the smell is intoxicating. I would love to smell it in this! I’m in the US, and unfortunately have not smelled any Providence Perfume Company scents, though have read good things about them.

  • The Choya Nakh is this sounds just amazing! I have smelled Moss Gown & Cocoa Tuberose, Lovely! I live in the U.S. Thanks for the draw!!

  • I adore cardamon, but it’s the desire to know what the smell of burnt seashells is like that entices me the most (as with others)! Intriguing!! I quite like Tabac Citron. In the US & thanks!

  • I love Tabac Citron, I always get compliments on it. I’m very excited to try Samarinda, it sounds wonderful! The cardamon, spice, coffee, vanilla and smokey undertones all sound dreamy. Someday I hope to take one of her perfumery workshops. I’m in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • I could have sworn I left a message on Samarinda right after Ringthing??? At any rate I love pretty much anything tropical. The carnation, rum ether, scotch leather and roasted shell all are very awesome notes. I’m trying to piece it all together in my head and loving it. In the USA. Thanks a million.

  • I have never tried a Providence Perfume. Cardamom is one of my favorite notes, and roasted seashell sounds interesting. I am in the US.

  • my favorite is still osmanthus oolong (but i do have a sampler of 5 minis plus a few actual samples, and i also really love cocoa tuberose, lei flower, and tabac citron.) oh, and not to forget my little bottle of moss gown — (must wear this tomorrow!) i’m in the u.s.

  • oh lordie, i forgot the most importnat part: what appeals to me is forst and foremost that it’s by charna. her stuff is spectacular, and would try *any* of hers. but this one has basenotes i really want to smell (and i adore rice in perfume.)

  • Fazal Cheema says:

Roasted seashell has to be one of the most unexpected ingredient i have heard off lately..i wonder how it may have shaped Samarinda. I am in the US

  • This truly sounds like a fragrance I would design for myself if I had that capability. All those notes sound wonderful. The only note I’m not familiar with is the roasted seashell, but I do appreciate a salty note added to my fragrance. Thanks–in the U.S.

  • Love the image of the cave paintings linked to this perfume. The hands are probably women’s I am in the US…

  • I’ve had several trips where I took a jungle tour in Belize, Costa Rica and Panama. They do have a very unique smell. This fragrance is very interesting. I like the boozy rum with the roasted shell. Hard to put my head around Samarinda as to how it will smell. All the notes seem right to make a wonderful scent journey. I have not tried this line as of to date but I definitely will. Went to Charna’s website and have made a Providence list. In the good Ol’ USA. Thank you.

  • Sadly, I’m finding that I’m getting sensitized to many of the new perfumes out there and to aromachemicals such as ISO E Super used in larger and larger doses these days. I was even thinking about giving up on perfume altogether because it’s such a crapshoot that I’ll get a migraine or burn my skin with something. I’ve loved many of the natural perfumes I’ve sampled (Aftelier, for one) and perfumers that use more naturals are going to be getting my dollars from now on, so I’ve been wanting to explore this brand. I’m excited at the opportunity to try this! I’m in the US, thank you for the draw!

  • This just sounds so exquisite; I love carnation, clove and cardamom. Branch and Vine has been my favorite Providence scent, but I would love to tr this one. I’m in the US.

  • What appeals to me about a Providence Perfume Co perfume? what DOESN’T?! *laugh* firstly, THANK YOU Ms. Charna, for giving back to the earth. you ROCK. secondly, there has yet to be a perfume that comes from this house that i haven’t fallen in love with!

besides, it’s a free trip! 😉 no mosquitoes included.

my favorite PPco perfume? Rose Boheme. no, Hindu Honeysuckle. no Rose Boheme. no, Rose Boheme. maybe it’s Samarinda? who can say? 😉

thank you for profiling this amazingly talented & kind natural perfumer!!!

    i live in the usa.

  • I am drawn to every ocean scent, so that’s appealing enough right there. This would be my first providence perfume. USA

  • The perfume itself sounds intoxicating, carnation and cardamom are two of my favorite notes, and I love that a portion of the proceeds will go to conservation efforts in the land that served as inspiration for the scent.

Would you believe that I’m still enchanted by Branch & Vine? I hoard my little sample!

    I am in the US

  • I love spice and florals. I’m trying to imagine them smoothed with coffee, leather and rum!

My favorite Providence Perfume is Cocoa Tuberose, though I’m reaching more for Hindu Honeysuckle, or Fern body lotion as the weather warms.

    I’m in the US.

  • I love the combination of orange and cardamom, and I like carnation and orange blossom, too. It’s great that she’s helping to preserve what’s left of the Borneo rainforest. It’s awful to think of the species we’ll be making extinct if we don’t take action, including those yet to be catalogued. I’m in the US.

  • Cardamom and coffee are few of my favorite notes. So I have to try this. I haven’t tried anything from providence perfumes yet.
    USA

  • I lived in Borneo for two magical years, so this is a must try for me! The deforestation there since I left 15 years ago is heartbreaking. Another instance of big companies imposing their will on a vulnerable land and population. At the moment I am especially enjoying the new Peche one, I don’t have the proper name. I live in the USA.

  • I love everything about this scent and the fact that the perfumer is donating 5% of sales to World Wildlife Fund makes it all the more fantastic!
    I live in the US.
    Thank you!

  • I am intrigued by the notes listed for Samarinda because it’s not easy to imagine what the overall experience would be like. I am fascinated by the idea of unique notes like cardamom, rum, jasmine rice, and roasted seashell juxtaposed against gorgeous favorite notes like orange blossom, heliotrope, and pink peppercorn. I bet it’s enthralling!
    I live in the USA.
My favorite Providence Perfume is Hindu Honeysuckle. I also love Branch & Vine, Rose Boheme, and Gypsy.

  • susie frankel says:

Roasted seashell…can’t imagine…but glad PP has done it..USA. and thank you for your corporate generosity for a worthy cause.

  • Cheryl Guzman says:

Orange, cardamom, seashells, then rum! I’m spinning over this. I do have Moss Gown, and I cannot ever imagine it not being apart of my wardrobe.

  • Wow, these notes alone are enough to draw me in, and with roasted seashell? I’m intrigued. I’d love the chance to try this one. Currently, I’ve just had the pleasure of trying Osmanthus Oolong, which I adore. Thanks so much for the generous draw. I’m in the U.S.

  • I am interested in Choya Nakh, I love scents that remind me of the ocean! Also love orange and cardamon too! Favorite perfume is Coaco Tuberose. I live in the US.

  • Everything about this perfume interests me:

    Charna Ethier? check!
    Choya Nahk? check!
    Natural? check check!!
Sumatran (my fave kind of) Coffee AND booze? check!
    Inspired by Borneo/Indionesia?? CHECK!!

US resident, dying to CHECK this out! 😉

  • Valentine girl says:

Like many others, I will chime in with the “roasted seashell” that sounds amazing! While I have never been to Indonesia, I spent a month backpacking in Thailand and got caught in many sudden rain showers in the jungle, where I had to take shelter in a bamboo hut and wait it out….so the smell of loamy dirt after a rain shower in a tropical jungle calls to me! I live in USA and thanks for draw.

  • I’ve been a fan of Providence Perfume ever since ordering a bottle of Tabac Citron on Etsy several years ago. The notes in Samarinda really intrigue me, especially the cardamom, orange, orange blossom, and Choya Nahk. I have an especial attachment to oceanic notes and the fragrance of orange blossoms; some of my happiest memories are of going for late-afternoon drives with my sister along Sebastian River (in central Florida) during orange-blossom season. My current favorite PP products include Eva Luna and the Chai Cocoa bodycare line. I live in the US. Thanks!

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

OK. I thought the Roasted Seashell was the most amazing part till I scrolled down to give “orginal” answer. So … let’s go with the Sumatran coffee and Scotch leather. I live in the US and am new to Providence Perfume

  • ElizabethN says:

Cardamom is one of my favorite notes! I’d love to try this. I live in the US.
