New Niche Perfume Review: Penhaligon’s Vaara + Fragrance to Celebrate a Royal Birth (Not That One!) Draw

Bertrand Duchaufour and Maharaja Gaj Singh II

When Bertrand Duchaufour turns his mind to composing perfume which captures a specific place it is my opinion that is where his greatest body of work resides. The latest example of this style from M. Duchaufour comes with the release of Penhaligon’s Vaara. M. Duchaufour was commissioned by His Highness Maharaja Gaj Singh II on the birth of his granddaughter Vaara in 2011 to create a perfume with her name. Vaara the child has yet to turn two but her existence has given birth to one of the best new fragrances of 2013.

Maharaja Gaj Singh II and Prince Charles (New Grandparents both)

The Maharaja wanted a fragrance which represented his home in Jodhpur and so M. Duchaufour spent time in the area absorbing the vibe. This is not the first time that India has inspired fragrances by M. Duchaufour and there are some recognizable touchstones particularly around the use of rose in the heart. What I am always surprised with is how he can ostensibly work the same inspiration and yet be able to keep evolving the style associated with that inspiration. Over the last year I have mentioned that if you really group some of the fragrances M. Duchaufour creates you will be delighted at absolutely experiencing the evolution of a singular style around a singular inspiration. Vaara is a prime example of what I’m talking about.

jodhpur

The "Blue City" aka Jodhpur, India

Vaara sweeps you away to Jodhpur from its first moments as the opening gambit is an exotic mix of coriander sweetened with carrot seed. The scents of the spice market are represented by surprisingly strong saffron which despite its power lilts through the early development until it intertwines itself with two rose sources, from Morocco and Bulgaria, this is the central accord to Vaara. M. Duchaufour uses iris and magnolia as supporting notes but you have to focus to find them. The rose and saffron are ascendant for much of the development. Very slowly a sweet honey begins to coat the rose as the saffron recedes. Creamy sandalwood is the star of the base notes and it is accentuated to stay on the sweeter side by benzoin and tonka.

Vaara has all-day longevity and moderate sillage.

Vaara is an olfactory landscape full of the grandeur of an exotic locale but what always sets these kinds of fragrances apart in M. Duchaufour’s hands are the nuances. The saffron and rose are expected but the use of the carrot seed and benzoin to trend this sweeter is something that elevates these kinds of compositions from clumsy travelogue to something more lyrical.  What I do know is Vaara has found its way close to the top of my favorite fragrances of 2013.

  • Vaara sounds Wonderful
My favorite Bertrand Duchaufour travel inspired perfume is Timbaktu

  • L’Artisan Mon Numero 6 and Mon Numero 8 are my favorite travel inspired fragrances by the lovely Bertrand Duchaufour. This one is a must have for me as I love his creations 🙂

  • Chris Schaefer says:

Vaara sounds incredible and I am keeping my fingers crossed. My favorite of the travel inspired is Dzongkha.

  • Bertrand is definitely one of the best in the business when it comes to capturing certain scents that resemble places. His Incense series for Comme des Garcons are excellent, both Avignon and Kyoto are two of the best incense fragrances currently out, in my opinion anyways. This Vaara sounds interesting as well, although I haven’t had much luck with Penhaglion scents besides Sartorial. Hopefully this changes my opinion.

  • Mr. Duchaufour’s work for Neela Vermeire is superb and I found Trayee to be my favorite of the bunch. Thank you for the draw!

  • I love Duchaufour’s Havana Vanille, and Vaara sounds great, too. Thanks for the draw.

  • I’m all about CdG Avignon – one of my all time favorite perfumes! I’m so excited to smell Vaara. It would be a perfect first bottle of Penhaligon’s for me. 🙂

  • My favorite by M. Duchaufour is Dzongkha. My favorite from Penhaligon’s is Malabah. I love them both so much that I own back-up bottles of each!

I would love to try Vaara.

  • My favourite Duchaufour up to now is Traversée du Bosphore he created for L’artisan Parfumeur. But I have yet to smell this new wonder!
My favourite Penhaligon’s is the subtle Elixir by Olivia Giacobetti.

  • My favorite of his travel-inspired fragrances might be Dzonghka, of what I’ve smelled so far. I’m hoping Vaara will top that. The notes sounds great! Thanks for the draw 🙂

  • This one sounds amazing. I would like to try any of Bertrand Duchafour fragrances.I think my favourite is Timbuktu.I have a feeling Vaara will be very exciting.

  • Vaara sounds good and I want to try everything M. Duchaufour creates, esp. with India as the inspiration. One favorite travel scent is the wonderfully weird Dzongkha.

  • Steve Raul says:

Penhaligon’s Sartorial to me is a revelation, able to tame one of my least favorites notes, lavender, with vibrant spice, rich leather, and very unique metallic notes. Sure makes me want to try Vaara.

  • Dubaiscents says:

My favorite Duchafour scents are Bombay Bling and Traversee du Bosphore (although I also can’t wait to smell Ashoka!). I love the packaging on this one and can’t wait to try it!

  • Although I love most Duchaufour creations, I think my favourite travel-inspired fragrance of his is Dzongkha. I did a complete 180º with that one.

  • My favorite travel inspired fragrance created by Duchaufour’s is Trayee that was created for Neela Vermeire Creations. thanks for the draw!

  • My favorite Bertrand Duchaufour travel inspired perfume is Timbaktu.
Picking a Pehaligon is harder, but I’m thinking if I had to select just one, Endymion would probably edge it.

  • Sounds fabulous!

My favourite Duchafour travel inspired scent is Seville, and my favourite scent from Penhaligons is Amaranthine (also by Duchafour).

  • My favourite BD scent is Seville A L’Aube which was my Christmas gift last year, but I also love the India themed Mohur and Bombay Bling.

  • My favorite Duchaufour fragrance is Timbuktu and favorite Penhaligon frag is Peoneve. I’m very excited to try Vaar!

  • I can’t keep up! Duchafour keeps producing new perfumes, and they all sound interesting. Timbuktu was one of my first full bottles, and I still love it, so it’s at the top of my list among Duchafour’s oeuvre.

From Penhaligon, it’s easy to choose a favorite: Amaranthine. Also by Duchafour, no?

  • I love the work of Bertrand Duchaufour. I especially like the Neela Vermeire perfumes (also inspired on India). I would love to try this one. The review sounds so wonderful!!!

I enjoy most of Penhaligon’s fragrances and admire them all. My fave is Malabah, followed closely by Artemisia. Vaara sounds wonderful, as I do like my roses, spices, and woods. Thanks for the drawing!

  • Out of the ones I’ve tried so far, though I have many of his on my list still to get to, I love Trayee. I also own and love Havana Vanille. I think Nuits de Tuberose is beautiful and I love the bottle too (if he had anything to do with the design). I’m looking forward to trying Amour Nocturn, Ashoka as well as Vaara.

  • Laurentiu says:

I would love to test Vaara for I do not know any Penhaligon’s fragrance neither do I know many of Bertrand Duchaufour creations. Thanks for the draw!

  • Well, I didn’t know until reading the post that Duchaufour created CdG Avignon! My bad, I LOVE Avignon.

But wasn’t a fan of Dzongka or Timbuktu — but I have those samples from years ago. With all the raves it’s prompting me to pull those back out and retry them!

  • susie frankel says:

My one and only is Malabah. A gift from a London visitor. Look forward to perhaps winning the draw and the Vaara. Happy trails M. Duchaufour!

  • This sounds great! I love Dzonga…so crisp and chilly you’d think you were in the Himalays’s hearing bells ring.

  • This sounds gorgeous. My favorite travel-related fragrance of M. Duchaufour is Seville a L’Aube.

  • Thanks for the draw. I want to try this so, so badly! My favorite of M. Duchaufour’s travel-related creations is Trayee, with Mohur being a close second.

  • I must unfortunately admit that I am aromatically ignorant of experiencing any of M. Dufauchour’s travel inspired perfumes nor have I ever had opportunity to inhale any Penhaligon’s molecular mixes. I would so love to win the Vaara if it is in the stars. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I’m not familiar with any Penhaligon’s fragrances, but I live his Aedes Des Venustas Signature scent, and Comme de Garçons Kyoto Incense. I also like several of the fragrances he did for L’Artisan, like Dzongkha. I’d love to have the chance to try Vaara. Magnolia, iris, saffron, rose and sandalwood. Yes, please.

  • My favorite Duchaufour travel inspired fragrance is Dzongkha, can’t get over it
I will be so glad to be able to try “Vaara”, thank you for the draw

  • The travel inspired Duchaufour’s parfum that I prefer is, with no doubt, Bombay Bling, I was shocked I liked so much because normally I don’t like fruity scents at all, but this one is wonderful! Trayee and MOhur ara also well done , the incense there is really amazing, just a pity that they are so expensive….
Then…I’m curious to know how this Vaara smells….

  • Chapeau Clack says:

I’m a fan of M. Duchaufour’s work, so it’s a tough choice. These days I lean more towards Traversee du Bosphore, that fabulous suede, tulip and apple combo just does something to me. So of course, I’d be thrilled to try Vaara.

  • My favorite Penhaligon’s is Amaranthine. I would love to try Vaara…such a pretty name.

  • I love all the NVC perfumes, Mohur has the most interesting story, but I also love Trayee and Bombay Bling. Great stories behind amazing perfumes, rare and high quality ingredients in them.

  • Oh goodness, how I love Duchaufour’s scents. I’ve been really enjoying Traversee du Bosphore since its release but I have to name Dzongkha as my absolute favorite. I’ve love to try Vaara! Thanks for another fab giveaway!

  • The only fragrance I own from this house is Juniper Sling, and I absolutely love it! I love the freshness and is great for summer.

Thanks for the draw. I’m an international reader.

  • I love Traversee du Bosphore by Bertrand Duchaufour, and Amaranthine is my favorite Penhaligon’s scent. I’m a big fan of M. Duchaufour! Located in the U.S. Thanks for the draw!

  • Thank you for the generous draw! I am an international follower and it’s great to see that the worldwide draws have become more frequent!
I love Avignon and Traversee du Bosphore from Mr Duchaufour’s creations. Pitty, I haven;t tried anything from Neela Vermeire’s collection, but I guess they would become some of my favorites. I love Penhaligon’s Elixir and Juniper Sling, as well.

  • Deborah H says:

Thank you for the terrific give-away! I think that Vaara will soon be my favorite fragrance of Mr. Duchaufour!!!

  • Someotherspring says:

My favorite Penhaligon’s Juniper SLing: AWESOME fragrance! Thanks for the draw op!

  • There are a lot of Bertrand Duchaufour fragrances I adore. My favorite travel inspired perfume is Bombay Bling! Vaara sounds very promising

  • My favorite Penhaligon’s fragrance would be Elixir, so mystical! I’m really curious about this new Vaara, the notes sound very interesting – thank you for the opportunity!

  • Comme de Garcons Series 3, Incense: Avignon is my favorite fragrance of all. I also like Penhaligon’s Blenheim Bouquet on my husband.

  • Of the ones I’ve tested, Timbuktu was my favorite. Perfect translation of it’s history and the story of the magnificent libraries. One can literally smell all the fascinating influences that made Timbuktu so known and intelectually vibrant.
Among others on my (travel inspired) to-test list stays Seville a l’aube.

While travelling through India, I didn’t quite make it to Jodhpur, but I’ve been to Ajmer, and I think Vaara could swiftly bring all the great memories of this region back. India was definitely a place worth visiting, it is really unique. It’s a place of unimaginable contrasts.

  • This sounds lovely! I can’t wait to try it. I am a big Duchaufour fan and love Timbuktu, Mohur, and Kyoto.they are all stunning in their unique way.

  • This does sound gorgeous. I love a number of M. Duchaufour’s travel-related fragrances, such as Seville a’ l’Aube and Mohur.

  • Thanks for the giveaway! i would have to say Kyoto, though I passed it along to my boyfriend. I prefer to smell it on him. 🙂
