New Niche Fragrance Review: CB I Hate Perfume #610 Outside- The Anti-“OFF!” + I Hate Bugs Sample Draw

CBIHP610Outside

It seems like most of my childhood was spent being slathered in suntan lotion or sprayed down by a bug repellent like OFF! or Cutter Evergreen. While the suntan lotion sort of smelled good the mosquito spray did not smell all that good. If I was to describe it in my perfume lingo I would describe OFF! as having a transient citrus quality which clashed with a medicinal accord layered over an oil spill of petroleum. I would actually laugh as over the years the can would trumpet “Now without the harsh odor” and then it would come out of the can and smell as bad, or worse, as the masking agents just couldn’t keep a good insecticide down. I endured this because I hated having bugs crawling on me, biting me, and buzzing in my eyes, ears, and mouth. I thought it better to smell like a chemical spill than to endure the devouring horde.

Perfumer Christopher Brosius of CB I Hate Perfume also hates bugs and also wanted something to wear which would keep them away. Because Mr. Brosius is a perfumer and a smart guy he did some research into what essential oils repelled insects and experimented with different blends until he found one which worked. He sold it at his shop in Brooklyn since 2005 but he had been asked by many who had used it to turn it into a perfume and now he has, CB I Hate Perfume #610 Outside.

This is not an actual picture of the author, it is only a re-creation

I had to laugh when I tried Outside for the first time as many of the ingredients he used like lavender and cedar I believe were used as masking agents for OFF! at one time or another. I think, as a result, this triggered a vestigial memory waiting to flinch at a chemical onslaught which never arrived. Outside is exactly as advertised it is a perfume which has the added benefit of keeping the bugs away.

Outside might be the simplest perfume Mr. Brosius has ever made as it really doesn’t have a traditional top, middle, base notes kind of development. Instead it all sort of seems to be present from the beginning to the end. Bergamot and lavender are supported by geranium and cedar with a very minimal application of patchouli and an even more minimal presence of oregano. It makes Outside have a slightly clean herbal smell which goes very well when doing things out doors.

Dengue-mosquito

So how about the bug repellent properties? I ran an experiment one day. I walked back into the deeper brush part of our yard and cleared some branches without wearing Outside. Once I started to sweat I was surrounded by a cloud of gnats and midges. I came inside got a cool drink and sprayed myself down with Outside. When I got back to work there was a definite decrease in the amount of insect activity around my head. After a few hours I walked the dogs back in the same buggy part of our yard and the Outside was still keeping them off of me.

Outside lasted on me for an entire day and has minimal sillage, except to the bugs.

Mr. Brosius captured the suntan lotion part of my childhood perfectly with his recreation of the Coppertone accord in CB I Hate Perfume At The Beach 1966. With Outside he has taken the insect repellent part of my childhood and flipped it on its head as he has made something I would have been happy to wear every day.

  • I've tried a bunch of things: 1) smoke, if you are around smoke, not fire, it masks your human scent so they can't find you. 2) bug spray and 3) citronella candles. I still don't know how effective any of these methods were however, as I still got bitten .

  • I use a mixture of citronella and lavender oils spread on all the exposed bits of skin. It works for around 6 hours before you need to reapply. It is rather pungent though!

  • We’ve resorted to using those mosquito nets that go over your head. It’s not too stylish, but it works. Unless you want to drink or eat, of course :). I’d love to try this.

  • I'd like to smell Mr Brosius concoction since I try to make one myself. Every summer, I take out Geranium, Lavender and cedar leaf essential oils and make a mix to repell bugs. I never really succeeded in making them into a good smelling perfume I liked, thought my mixes repell bugs OK. My other way to stay safe is to make smokey fires and stay near them from sundown on.

I take a B-1 tablet daily from April-October. In mosquito season, I add a B Complex to that. Also Vick Vapo-Rub works to repel them. IF you can stand the smell and greasiness on your skin in the summer: I cannot 🙂

  • I am desperate to keep the mosquitoes away!  Nothing works for me, except the dreadful DEET and that only to a certain extent.  Mosquitoes love me and I have a sensitivity to their bites, so I end up with huge welts.  Ugh, hate them!

I am reading all the suggestions, that's for sure!

  • OFF was also the bane of my childhood, and a constant companion during summer, as my family went for outdoorsy road trips every school break.  I remember also trying to spend as much time in the water as possible–because I loved it–and finding that keeping myself submerged tended to also keep the biting things at bay.

  • Long sleeves, long socks, and a hat.  Doesn't keep them away as much as make it more difficult for them to bite, but that's good enough for me!

  • Heather F says:

Covering up and Off…and I'm hot and miserable throughout the whole process.  This definitely sounds worth a try!  Thanks as ever for the giveaway!

I had problems with mosquitos for such a long, long time. So I started reasearching online and from books plants that are a natural repellent. The ingredients that Christopher Brosius used: Geranium, Lavender, Patchouli, Cedar and Bergamot are actually a mosquito natural repellent. Other natural mosquito repellents are: Verveine, Citronella or Lemongrass, Eucalyptus, Mint, Peppermint, Marigolds, Basil, Cloves. Lavender also keep away moths from your clothing and makes them smell so fresh and clean. You can use Lavender essential oil to reduce the swelling and the itching from an insect bite 😀 One interesting fact is that mosquitos are attracted by floral or fruity scents. I tested this theory and yes they are pretty much atracted to anything sweet and fruity-floral.

I keep away the pesky bugs when I am outdoors with a strong scent of Verveine or Patchouli. Also I rub on my skin a little Eucalyptus ointment. I smell like grandma but it works perfectly.

Such a smart man Christopher Brosius! 😉

Thank you for the giveaway! Wish you all the best! ^_^

  • Vitamin B-1…garlic (but that keeps everyone away)…I've used essential oils to create something along the lines of #610 Outdoors…when entertaining I pull out a couple bug zappers and get a fire raging in the chiminea and fire pit…and still usually have to resort to DEET. But I'd love to give this a try and I live in the U.S.

  • When we have barbecue outside we sometimes take a couple of incense sticks and burn them close to the table, the scented smoke repels the bugs. We also use scented candles like lavender.

  • When I am at home, I don't need to resort to anything to keep the mosquitoes and bugs away. Sometimes I use essential oils. If I know I will encounter a lot of bugs in the woods for instance I will wear long sleeves and long pants. How different this is when I'm on holiday abroad.  For example: a few years ago I went to Florence. There were a lot of mosquitoes at the time and they all wanted a taste of me. I had a severe (10 to 20 cm diameter) reaction on their bites. A mild repellent didn't work. The only thing that worked was Deet. I hope that Outside will do the trick for me instead.

  • My FAVORITE way to keep bugs away is to drink gin-tonic and/or bitter lemon mixed with tequila (= cheap margarita) as both soft drinks contain quinine which repels bugs and the alcohol makes you care less about the bugs 🙂

  • Eric! Best hint I received in years! And it just so happens I love gin-tonic. Now about Outside, nice idea, I tried doing something similar myself in the past using only essential oils. Not everyone found it agreeable though. I went overboard with palmarosa then…

  • Honestly, for the most part, I stay inside. I met a friend for dinner last night and I was telling her about Outside. Bug repellent is no fun when it doubles as people repellent. ;). I have also tried Skin So Soft. The scent is tolerable. It’s just so oily. I would love to give Outside a try…

  • Victoria Casey says:

I’m with Eric :D. Seriously though I usually do use Off .
    Thanks for the draw!

  • Usually I have to use Off, or some other DEET based repellent. That works only so-so for me, because the bugs seem to really like me for some reason. Mostly, I don't go outside for long periods of time 🙁

  • Stay inside! No, that wouldn't be any fun… I use Badger brand repellent.

smells OK and works pretty well too.

  • Well, being that I have been eaten alive for the last few weeks, I'm going to have to try something new! I hope Outside is a winner. I'm going to try all of the other suggestions commenters made as well.

  • Well mosquito nets keep them out of the house but when it comes to outside burning citronella candles does the work. I do also have some citronella based sprays (organic) that keep them away from me. I would definately love to try Outside!!!

  • Deep Woods Off with DEET……only thing for me that has worked and I have tried a wealth of products. I love Mr. Brosius "Burning Leaves, At The Beach 1969, 7 Billion Hearts, Mr. Hulot's Holiday, CBMusk, Ambrosius and so on….this is bound to be great as well. Thanks for the opprotunity for draw. I really wanted to try this.

    I either:

    1.  Run away.

Or, if the event/locale is worth it:

    2. Close my mental eyes and ignore the bites.

I like covering up, too, for sun and whatnot, occasion permitting.

Lavender oil + not scratching even a little bit really does speed up the healing process!

I think I'd reach for the deet if in fear of deadly disease.

I read that the buggers go for the CO2 we exhale, so maybe getting drunk, garlic OD, or other assaults to the breath are the way to go.  These will, of course, repel certain people while attracting others.  In that case, go back to options 1 and 2.

  • I use Avon SkinSoSoft as a moisturizer.  For some unknown reason it works pretty well and smells okay, too.  That is part of my Saturday gardening ritual and is especially important now, as we've had only about 300,000 gallons of rain and there are enough gnats and mosquitoes to populate Jupiter!   We're putting up a couple of additional bat houses, in hopes of luring more bats.  More Bats!  MORE BATS! Fat, happy bats, with bellies full of mosquitoes!

    xoxoA

  • Sandflies are vicious around home. You have to do everything.

One of the things I do is have a fan turned on me because they're weak fliers.

  • My most common strategy is just to stay inside. I've used Off in a pinch, but the smell annoys me and sometimes clashes with my perfume, so I'd rather not. My wife has been pushing a bug-repelling thing that one clips to clothes. Maybe! But with all that, I'm very interested in CB's Outside.

  • I use lavendel essential oil but iI've also realised that when I eat garlic they bite me less! But garlic is not at all my favourite thing to eat!

  • Fortunately, mosquitos do not seem to like me that much. (They jump on; then jump onto someone else & bite.) Gnats and hornets are another matter! I usually just try to keep moving.

  • Fazal Cheema says:

back home i used to use a mosquito-repellent spray (i forgot the name) but have not felt the need to use anything in the US

  • I don't do much to keep bugs away, but I should. I like Avon's bug repellent products. And they have the additional advantage that I love the traditional smell of Skin So Soft! Thank you for the draw.

  • Light fires and citronella. Though honestly mosquitoes love me and nothing seems to help!  I'd love to try this!!

  • Mosquitos love me and I try not to be around them and I cover up, but, if I have to be outdoors, I'd use OFF. The citronella candles and smoke in fire pits work OK if you are right next to them. I have used the Avon SSS w/ bug repellent, but got a rash reaction to it, so, cannot use that.  I would love to try this.   Thanks for the draw.

  • Greg Esaau says:

Luckily for me, the bugs stay away from me haha. I usually wear track pants so that helps. I guess the bugs don't like me, that's fine. I don't like them either. 😀

  • Whatever I do, they bite me! I don't know how to avoid mosquitos if I don't wear winter clothes! (or a toxic spray, I don't know what it's worse)

  • The really question is what have I not done?! The only thing that works is coating myself in that "deep woods" bug spray that has the most deet. I hate to think about what that stuff is doing to me, but it beats the number of swollen welts on my body that will itch me to near death for the next few days. This has sadly made me stop wearing fragrances in the summer as well, since the bug spray over powers the scent. I would love to win a sample, perhaps kill two birds with one stone.

  • leathermountain says:

I'm still running away from mosquitoes…. But I have received my sample of CB Outside.  Thank you very much!!

I find it smells like insect repellent only without that drowning-in-toxic-petroleum-products feeling that normal insect repellents provide.

And you know what?  I like the smell of insect repellent.  Who'd have thought?
