New Niche Fragrance Review: Blackbird by Olympic Orchids – Pacific Northwest Summer Comes Alive + An International Forest Draw

Blackbird by Richard Allen (r.)

Blackbird, a pair of shops featuring clothing as well as a modern apothecary in Seattle’s Ballard district, has been the recent home of the Pacific Northwest Perfumer’s Circuit events. Several local perfumers have created fragrances specifically for the store. Unfortunately, due to rent increases, the brick and mortar locations will be temporarily closing, with Blackbird maintaining an online presence. The final perfume celebration, held in Mid-July, was in honor of the new Olympic Orchids fragrance, Blackbird.

Olympic Blackbird #1 CaFleureBon

Summer Forest by S.S. Minns

Blackbird was created by perfumer Ellen Covey in homage to the summer aromas of the Pacific Northwest. Ripe wild blackberries bursting on the vine, conifers giving off their crisp, resinous scents in the shimmering air, and the dry grasses of a meadow all contribute to the experience of wearing this perfume.

The perfume opens with a truly juicy blackberry note, and this berry-lover was in heaven. I used to go berry-picking with my Grandma and Grandpa in the hot midsummers of Ohio, and of course shoved quite a few into my mouth. The sticky, dark purple juice would ring my mouth and make all manner of debris stick to my plump little hands. Blackbird is made with a tincture of blackberry that rings so true I feel like I have been eating the fruit. Ringing the edges of the dark berry is the aroma of evergreen trees. You can almost see the thickness of the air, and feel the dry mulch beneath your feet as you traverse this fragrant summer forest.

As the scent dries down, the berries succumb to the power of the sun and hungry birds, leaving only the dried leaves and stems underfoot. The aromas of the woods take over, seed cones bursting, dried needles crushed underfoot, their resinous, dusty smell rising up. This is not only a wearable and luscious fragrance, it is very experiential. An added bonus is the pretty dark juice, like deep amethyst, that comes from the berry tincture, except I would be careful about spraying it on a white garment.

Notes: Himalayan blackberry fruit, dry grass and leaves, elemi, cedar wood and resin, woody-amber accord, fir balsam absolute, musk

Berries have been growing on me. They do evoke pleasant childhood memories like the one described above.

I am in the US. Thanks!

I live in the US, and would love to win a bottle of Blackbird! I don’t think I have any perfumes with berry notes in my collection- but I liked Blackbird when I sniffed it recently! 🙂

  • This sounds like deeper, well composed berry fragrance that I would love to try! Most red berry perfumes don’t do much for me, with some exceptions. Hopefully this would be one to convince me to keep trying berry scents! I live in the US.

I am in the US. I usually like black currant notes. I’m not familiar with blackberry notes in perfume, but I’ve done my share of picking and eating them!

  • Susan Lunde says:

I *do* like berries in perfume and have several in my collection, ranging from Hot Couture #1 to Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire. I don’t think I have any niche or indie berry scents, however. Maybe something from DSH? Will have to check …

Would love to try Blackbird – the green and woody elements with blackberry sound amazing. I’m in the US.

Now this is one fruit I would like to taste: blackberries, evergreen, cedarwood, sounds very grown up to me. Love the violet/black color. I’m in US and would love to ad Blackbird to my arsenal. Thank you for the chance.

  • I do like berries in perfume, it depends on the topping 🙂 Great review of this new creation from OO. I am in the US.

  • I grew up on the East coast where blackberries are plentiful during summer . There is nothing as delicious than eating this freshly picked fruit. I would love to receive Ellen’s lovely fragrance, so sign me up!

  • I love berries in real life, but I have not tried berries in perfume yet. I would love to try Blackbird, and I especially like the sound of blackberries plus evergreens. I am in the US and thank you for the draw.

  • I don’t know if I like berries because I’ve not tried a berry-centric perfume. I’d like to win Blackbird so that I can find out! Thanks for the draw. I’m in the U.S.

  • I love berries in perfumes. Mostly raspberries and strawberries!

I am international. Thanks for the draw!

  • I love blackberries–the bush in my backyard is prolific, though I do nothing but pick the fruit in late spring and whack the vines back in the fall; the berries I get are large, plump with juice, jammy sweet with some rosy-floral notes!

With those as a basis for comparison I find myself very picky about blackberry notes in fragrance–they can be a glorious approximation of my seasonal experiences, or horribly plastic and sickly sweet. So much depends on the raw materials used and the skill of the perfumer.

    I’m in the US.

  • Your description is beautiful, very vivid, and reminds me of my summers growing up in North Idaho, picking berries in my Grandparent’s or Aunt’s yards that were both just a hop, skip and a jump from the woods.

    I am in the U.S.

  • I visited a farmer’s market last week that had blackberries the size of cherry tomatoes, they were delicious! That real and juicy scent is how I like berries in perfume, not too sweet. Blackbird sounds delicious. I’m in the US, thanks for the chance.

  • I don’t like sweet perfumes.Combination of berries and vanilla is not for me but if they are paired with raisins leather or deepwoody and mossy notes that is perfect for me.I would love to try Blackbird. I live in EU.

  • I live in the Pacific Northwest and have been wanting to capture the smell of summer moss and conifer needles on hot rocks, so I’m wondering if the dry down manages this. I’d love to win a sample. I am in Vancouver, Canada.

i still remember one of my earliest favorite women fragrances was Givenchy Haute Couture which i later found out had rasberry in it…i have not been impressed with most other berry fragrances i have come across but i think blackberry may be my preferable note though Givenchy has Rasberry.

I am originally from Oregon and I do miss berry picking!!! And the forests! And yes, I love berries in perfume as well as foresty notes, naturally. When I was berry picking, half would go in the basket, half I would eat, lol. Ain’t much berry pickin in Nevada, let me tell ya. I love using berries in dishes as well, like my blackberry baked brie, it’s yummy! Though, don’t ask my husband about how my blackberry chicken turned out…not so good, lol:). I am in the U.S. obviously, thank you.

  • PatriciaC says:

I used to pick blackberries as a kid, great memories. I think i would prefer berries rather than citrus. I love that it’s experiential, makes it rare and innovative. Keep up the good work! I live in the U.S. Would love to try-thank you.

  • When it comes to berries I think I prefer juniper berries in perfume 🙂
    I’m international

  • My favorite perfume with a blackberry note is Bois de Paradis, which I really enjoy. But I must say, I am primarily a consumer of edible blackberries. It is rare for me not to have a basket of blackberries in my fridge, which are delicious now. I live in the US and would love to try Blackbird. Thanks for the draw!

  • I miss berry picking as a child. This review brought me back. I love berries in perfume if done well, as this one sounds. My favorites are Mure et Musc, Bois de Paradis, and the original Body Shop’s Dewberry. Thank you for the draw!

  • d3m0lici0n says:

I don’t think I tried berries in perfumes. But it would be a great way to start with Blackbird. I live in the US.

  • This sounds very inventive. I most recently enjoyed the new Jo Malone one…Bayberry I think? I am in the US

  • Steve Raul says:

Berries definitely work for me when paired with heavier ingredients, most prominently with leather, such as TF Tuscan Leather and Charles Street by Mark Birley. US here.

  • I like berries to be a part of a fragrance. I like the freshness it brings, and the women seem to like it as well haha.

Thanks for the draw. I’m international.

  • SamSillage says:

I’m willing to try anything with berries, but I find berry soliflores generally lacking in complexity. For instance, the black currant in L’Ombre Dans L’Eau enthralls me in a way Enchanted Forest doesn’t. It’s like berries really need something else boosting them to their full potential. I’m in the USA.

  • I do love berries. One fond memory was camping in N. California & Oregon in the late summer when the wild Himalaya berries are ripe for the picking. Not sure if I’d enjoy it in a fragrance but I do like all the other ingredients notes in Blackbird. I am in the US. Thans for the draw.

  • soupersusan says:

Berries en route to the mouth are wonderful. The sight and scent of berries on the vine and among the wild grasses in dry, pine-scented summer sun are spectacular. I’m a West-Coaster (US) and would love to participate in your drawing — thanks for it and for the article!

  • I love berries, in life and in many perfumes.

    US resident

I think this perfume sounds wonderful and would love to win. Blackbird is an awesome company and I am sure the perfume lives up to its name and inspiration.

Many thanks for the draw!! 😀

  • Chris Schaefer says:

Blackberries! I am so inspired! I have been picking blackberries on my land daily and have been making cobbler. I think now I will make tincture! I am from Northern CA and we have those delightful berries in abundance.

  • US

Thank you for the lovely review and draw!
I like the scent of real berries–love berry picking, and berry eating. It’s part of summer, both being outside and taking in the smell of sun-warmed plants, and savoring the ripe tart and sweet flavors.

But sometimes blackberry and blackcurrant notes don’t work for me in perfume, there might be a specific synthetic that just doesn’t agree with me. I would love to try Blackbird and find a perfume with berries and woods which works! The experiential nature of the scent sounds lovely and wonderful, the most appealing aspect because it sounds like more than the sum of its parts.

I went blackberry picking outside Vancouver and it was a misty morning filled with delicious berries. I’ve had scents with berry in them and they are all different. Would love some from Olympic/Ellen. USA.

  • I do like berries in fragrance, especially raspberries. I’m on the fence on black currant notes and can only wear if used with a light hand. I don’t remember ever wearing anything with blackberries. Thanks for the draw!

  • I tried Jo Malone’s Blackberry and Bay, I liked it and got many good comments on it….so I guess I do like berries and would love to try this. Thanks for the draw.

  • Mmm. Though not usually a fan of fruity scents, this make me wonder. . .sounds rich and deep and intense. . .I’m intrigued! Thanks for the draw!
