New Fragrance Sonoma Scent Studio (Laurie Erickson) Pacific Forest + Into the California Woods Perfume Draw

Laurie Erickson

Laurie Erickson of Sonoma Scent Studio

Laurie Erickson of Sonoma Scent Studio       is an incredibly talented  multi media perfumer, with a devoted following. I’ve always admired her work, and fell hard for Yin and Ylang, which was collaboration with our Editor in Chief, Michelyn Camen.

Pacific Forest  joins  Amber Incense , Cocoa Sandalwood  and  Spiced Citrus Vetiver  in Laurie’s growing Natural’s Collection,  and  is a riff on  her earlier work 2012 ,Forest Walk.   Laurie’s creative process was to use those forest notes and  to put them onto an all-natural amber base.  She had just finished   Amber Incense earlier this year, and wanted to  expand her exploration of amber.  Pacific Forest combines some of her favorite woodsy essences, and a rare hemlock spruce absolute that I found absolutely stunning;  it has quickly become my favorite of all Ms Erickson’s fragrances. It is magnificent.

Pacific Forest  opens with deep, rich hemlock spruce.  It’s absolutely superb, very distinctive, and I have not experienced anything like it in any other fragrance. It is the hypnotic hemlock we were promised in Ormond  Woman, the mysterious hemlock so sorely missing in Illamasqua Freak   This one note captures the essence of the forest in a bottle. It’s breathtaking and I feel confident in predicting that you will be constantly lifting your wrist for another sniff!

The crispness of the wood gets more noticeable after about 20 minutes on my skin. There is a tang and spiciness to these wood notes that I strongly associate with California forests, which are drier than those of my native Blue Ridge nountains.  A pitch-perfect note of freshly cut evergreen soon joins the woodsy accord; cedar and pine have joined the party, and because Pacific Forest  is 99% natural, there is no harshness to the woods. Each is distinctive; pine with its sweetness, the cedar a bit drier, all mingling with the piquancy of sap and bruised needles.  You’re deep in the forest and your quick mid-morning walk through the woods has turned into an hours-long ramble in paradise.

As the perfume develops, Laurie’s gorgeous labdanum warms up and begins a slow dance with frankincense.  They smolder and sway together in perfect harmony with the lushness of the woods, coaxing the amber in to her full, luscious bloom. Earthy patchouli and a striking velvety oakmoss replicate the forest floor, rounding out and completing Laurie’s vision.  The dry-down of Pacific Forest is even better than the stunning opening. You’re lost in the forest now. It’s late afternoon, the sunlight is warm and golden above you. The enchantment is complete. You don’t even care that you’re going to be late for supper.

To my nose, this is truly the scent of a forest; it’s every bit as much about the needles and sap and soil as it is the wood. Pacific Forest pulls very chypre on me, but the oakmoss is very mossy and soft.

Nothing to be afraid of! I get 8 hours of the full fragrance, with a few extra hours of the golden ambery base. It can be worn by both men and women, and I think it would be fun to wear as a couple, anytime year round.  The amber is not at all suffocating or powdery, and there is coolness to the green facets of Pacific Forest that makes me think this would work beautifully in summer, as well. I certainly plan on finding out!

Disclosure: I received my sample from Sonoma Scent; opinions my own

Sonoma Scent Studio was my first independent perfumer, and is still my favorite. My fave scent is Incense Pure, with Rose Volupte in close second. I cannot wait to try her newest creation–the dry wood and amber sounds divine.

  • I’ve not had a chance to explore Sonoma Studios line, but have always wanted too! I grew up north of San Francisco, and the forests and trees there have always been a touchstone for me. Pacific Forest sounds like the smells of home. I’m in the USA

  • I can’t wait to try Pacific Forest. I am an absolute fan of Laurie’s fragrances, and I’m sure this one will be wonderful!

  • I am intrigued as Pacific forest has been compared to Ormond Woman and has been described as a true tribute to the smell of the forest. It also has an interesting spruce note. My favorite Sonoma Scent creation is Amber Incense. i am in the US

  • I love Sonoma Scent Studios. Tabac Aurea is one of the best tobacco fragrances ever. I love perfumes that represent the smell of a forest and this one looks like it will deliver. I live close to the Pacific Northwest so this also interests me. I live in the U.S.. Thank you so much.

Love Laurie’s scents. I have a number of them. They are beautifully longlasting & such quality. Love to try a sample of the Pacific Forest.

  • Ooh, I have been waiting for this to be released! I’m a huge fan of Laurie’s entire line, so when you say “my favorite of all Ms Erickson’s fragrance,” I’m almost in disbelief because she has so many amazing ones. Among my favorites are Champagne de Bois, Tabac Aurea, and Cocoa Sandalwood (my favorite cocoa scent AND my favorite sandalwood scent). Thanks for the review and lovely draw! USA.

Love SSS and love hemlock. And hemlock, in a word, is what appeals to me about this scent. I love hiking in all sorts of terrain, but have a special fondness for environments with lots of soft wood spruce, fir, and hemlock. That christmas mixed with damp earth and grasses…my idea of paradise! I’m a fan of Tabac Aurea and Champagne de Bois. I’m in the US and thanks for the draw.

  • Oh, love forest scents! I like spraying them up and walking under the cloud. Hard to say which of her fragrances I like best! I’m in the US. Thanks for the draw.

  • I’m so excited for Laurie’s latest creation Pacific Forest. I love the beautiful forests of the Pacific Northwest. They are truly beautiful. I live in San Francisco so I’m so lucky to have the Pacific forests in my backyard. I love the centuries old redwood and nature that surrounds you.

This fragrance sounds beautiful. The hemlock truly intrigues me. The laudanum is als a gorgeous note. I can picture myself getting lost in the deep forest with this perfume.

I’m a fan of everything Laurie creates, but one of my favorites is Spiced Citrus Vetiver. Just gorgeous and I always receive compliments.

I live in the USA. Thank you for the draw!!

  • Big fan of Fireside Intense. Always looking and never finding spruce dominant scents. Excited that this could be it! US, thanks for the draw.

  • I love Laurie’s fragrances and have many. Hard pressed to pick a favorite. Pacific Forest sounds like heaven. I live in the US.

I love Sonoma Scent Studio — can’t pick a single favorite though. I’m in the US, and thanks for the draw!

  • I don’t think I have had the opportunity to try and Sonoma Scent Studio fragrances yet, and since I love woods, and I am in the Pacific Northwest now, I would love to try this one. I live in the US, thank you for the draw.

  • As a resident of Santa Cruz, CA I think Pacific Forest will be right up my alley. West Coast chauvinism notwithstanding, I love almost everything with a cedar/resin combo.

I was very impressed by SSS Fireside Intense.

    U.S.

  • This looks like it would be a brilliant introduction to Sonoma Scent Studio. “Hyponotic hemlock” spoke to me on so many levels: lofty windspiraling boughs traversing scrawls of ephemeral scent maps across my skin. As a wild gardener and an avid floral dabbler, I’m very drawn to “soil and sap.” Intentional application of geosmin sounds lovely.

Brooks Shane Salzwede’s artwork is a gorgeous accompaniment, like the heartbeat of a moss agate. Thank you for the helpful review and the giveaway!

  • My favorite SSS fragrance is WInter Woods 🙂 Tabac Aurea is also a close favorite. I am in the US, thank you!

  • I have never tried an SSS fragrance, nor have I been to the pacific forest! I’d love a new adventure in perfume since I can’t travel – saving for two going to college soon, yikes! Thank you for the chance, I’m in the US.

  • Love the Egyptian Musk. I’m drawn to this new one as pine and all natural sounds unique. Perfect for winter wearing. USA

  • I love many of Sonoma Scent Studio’s scents, but Champagne de Bois is my most favorite. I’d love to try Pacific Forest–I live in the Pacific NW and love the smell of the evergreens.

  • All of the SSS treasures are transcendent, but my faves are Jour Ensoleille and Winter Woods. Summer and winter. I’m so glad to find a new offering from SSS. I am in the US…

  • Tammy calls it “truly the scent of a forest,” which makes me dying to try it because the smell of trees is one of my favorite reasons to hike. I have not yet tried any SSS fragrances yet. I’m in USA

  • I am a fan of Laurie’s blog and her beautiful perfumes though I can’t pick a favorite between Incense Pure and Tabac Aurea. Pacific Forest sounds like the forest scent I’ve been looking for, the “deep, rich hemlock spruce” note sounds divine. Thanks for the opportunity, I’m in the US.

  • Oh….. cozy woodsy amber!! That sounds heavenly! Can’t wait to try it out. I love all of your scents!

  • Thank you so much, Tammy and Michelyn, for such a beautiful review! Tammy, you have a way with words; Michelyn, the images are perfect! Glad to see the interest too — many thanks for the lovely comments!

  • I adore all of Laurie’s scents. My absolute favorite is Winter Woods. It’s a creamy fragrance that blends into absolute coziness. It seems to mold into my skin’s chemistry and leaves me longing for more with each passing whiff.

  • I love forest scents, especially this time of year. I was very taken with the new DSH forest flavored scent, and I am sure I would Like SSS new scent, as I have enjoyed so many of these perfumes. I think Laurie has a special touch with what I call “winter perfumes”, or scents that seem appropriate for the autumn and winter season. My absolute favorite is Jour Ensoleillé.
    Thank you for the draw.

  • I adore forest scents, having lived in Northern CA most of my life, and yet have never found a fragrance that’s intrigued me. I’m very inexperienced with Laurie’s fragrances though I follow her blog and appreciate all the wisdom and snippets she has to share…would love the chance to take a whiff of this one.

  • I’ve long had a soft spot for Winter Woods, and I grew up in the Pacific Forest — specifically, SE Alaska — and still live in Seattle. This sounds like one I’d love to try…(going to light my Fresh Balsam candle right now!). I’m a registered reader and I live in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • My favorite Sonoma Scent fragrance is Jour Ensoleille but Forest Walk is a close second so I am most intrigued by a spin-off on that. I am in the U.S. Thanks for the draw!

  • Laurie may be my favorite perfumer! SSS consistently puts out extremely enjoyable perfumes that are like little vacations… they often have a strong sense of place, while maintaining qualities that make them comfortable, enticing personal fragrances. It’s hard to pick favorites, but Rose Volupte and Winter Woods are great in the winter! I have not, however, tried anything from her “naturals” line, although Cocoa Sandalwood and now Pacific Forest sound like dreamy choices. I have never been to the west coast, but if I ever make it out there, I do want to hit up some national parks. In the meantime, this perfume may be the next best thing. I’m in the US, thanks for the draw. ^_^

  • The most appealing part of this review is:”Pacific Forest opens with deep, rich hemlock spruce. It’s absolutely superb, very distinctive, and I have not experienced anything like it in any other fragrance. It is the hypnotic hemlock we were promised in Ormond Woman” which I love also. I adore the smell of the forest, and scents which capture that alive feeling. The golden hour filtered through the trees is my favorite time of day:

“You’re lost in the forest now. It’s late afternoon, the sunlight is warm and golden above you. The enchantment is complete. …
To my nose, this is truly the scent of a forest; it’s every bit as much about the needles and sap and soil as it is the wood.”

SSS Cocoa Sandalwood has been on my to-try list for a long time

Thank you for the reviews and draw! USA

  • I recently purchased “Wood Violet” .I wanted a violet fragrance that wasn’t too powdery and “old” smelling. This fit the bill. “Pacific Forest” sounds intriguing. I love amber fragrances and the smell of outdoors. I will be purchasing this.

  • Shaman Levine says:

I haven’t tried any Sonoma Scent Studio perfumes yet but would really love to. I love the smell of forests, fireplaces, wood, log cabins, etc., as I find them calming for the soul. I would love to try Forest Walk, Fireside Intense, Winter Woods, and now Pacific Forest. They all sound perfect for me! I live in the US but in NYC where unfortunenately these scents in their natuturally occurring environment are far from prevalent.

  • I have not yet had the pleasure of wearing a Sonoma Scent Studio fragrance, but the promise of the “forest in a bottle ” Pacific Forest really appeals to me.
