Dom De Vetta

In 2012 Dom De Vetta, formerly senior Vice President at Chanel and Global General Manager of Jo Malone Ltd, opened his own fragrance house, Shay & Blue, named for his grandmother Grace Shay and for his own favorite color. His boutique, in Marylebone, London is elegant and inviting, the perfect place to spend time exploring fragrance with friends.

I have not visited the shoppe but I am familiar with the Shay & Blue presentation. It is flawless.  The blue box, the artistically rendered brochure, the balanced round bottles and the color of the perfume all speak to thoughtful, meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail.  The young perfumer, Julie Massé of Mane, is a veteran with at least twenty-five fragrances in her portfolio. In order to write this review I purposefully ignored the listed notes and simply lived with Blueberry Musk for an entire week.  In the process I learned something interesting about my own sense of smell, about blueberries and about the fragrance too.

I love the northern highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum), but in the past few days I’ve come to realize that I simply cannot smell fresh, commercial blueberries unless I bite right into them, crush them, bake them or apply heat. That being said, the first taste I perceive is slightly tannic, more vegetal than sweet and more like the waxy bloom than the pulp. My first experience of Shay & Blue Blueberry Musk perfume ran parallel to these sensations.  Initially I smelled no rich fruit or berry scent at all, but rather the moderately astringent, tannic effect of a fine British tea, brightened with the light fresh pucker of citrus. Within moments of that first hit, the perfume settled into a pale floral, reminiscent of clear, cool mornings in carefully tended gardens.

Heated by the warmth of my skin, Blueberry Musk expanded into aura of berries, flowers and woods as if I was on a picnic in the English Countryside.  At this point I began to smell fresh blueberries and musk.  The aroma stayed with me for two or three hours, retreating, at last, to grace the skin with the translucent scent of fresh linens.

Blueberry Musk a slightly offbeat but still refined, unisex, ethereal fragrance, happily not smelling of muffins or pies.  If you are looking for a cool, refreshing, floral treat, a bottle of Blueberry Musk might be the perfect gift for yourself or a close friend.

Disclosure – A bottle of Blueberry Musk was kindly supplied by Shay & Blue, the opinions are my own.

Gail Gross, Contributor

Editor’s Note: For me Shay & Blue’s Blueberry Musk  is  reminiscent of L’Artisan Parfumeur Mure et Musc which I own, a few precious drops left from a bottle I bought in the early 1980s (first introduced in 1978 by perfumer Jean LaPorte). Blueberry Musk plays on the theme but with a modern flair, less fleeting. On my skin there is a definite blueberry aroma,  but not foody nor too fruity. Longevity was overnight for me.  For Art Direction I loved the photography of Andre Brito, its relaxed elegance and  sensual edginess fit the review and Blueberry Musk-Michelyn Camen, EIC

  • Wonderful review! This perfume sounds incredible fabulous. I love blueberry, but unfortunately, I can very rare to eat it. I also very love the scent of blueberry. And I would very love this perfume. I have never had a chance to try any of Shay & Blue fragrance, but I have read about those fragrances, and I suppose those are all wonderful. Thank you very much for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • I didn’t know this brand and it’s a pleasant discovery. I would love Mure et Musc, but its longevity is so short on my skin. If Blueberry Musk lasts longer, I am in heaven!

Thank you Gail for this review and for the possibility to look in your garden – it’s lovely!

  • I enjoyed Gail’s review of Shay & Blue’s Blueberry Musk, especially the part where she stated ” I purposefully ignored the listed notes and simply lived with Blueberry Musk for an entire week. In the process I learned something interesting about my own sense of smell, about blueberries and about the fragrance too.” My favorite’s are Salt Caramel and Framboise Noire. I live in the US and thanks for the draw! 🙂

When Michelyn compares Blueberry Musk to original Mure et Musc, that alone makes this quite an intriguing release. I have modern formula of mure et musc extreme and it is, indeed, lovely. It is good it avoids gourmandy elements and is more on the fruity, woody side, making it an interesting unisex creation. My favorite Shay & Blue fragrance is Salt Caramel. Thanks a lot for the draw. I am in the US.

  • I couldn’t be more excited with the chance to win this. I too love Mure et Musc. I can’t think of a more appealing aspect to that then see what Shay & Blue does with the concept. My favorite of the line is, Sicilian Limes. USA

Great article! I was just looking at this fragrance on another site.
The simplicity and elegance of 2 simple notes. Ok more like 2 notes in the name. 🙂

In all honesty i have yet to try out a shay & blue fragrance.
This would be a fantastic intro.
    USA.

  • I love how she “ignored the listed notes” and “lived with Blueberry Musk for an entire week”. Now that’s a way to review a perfume! I live in the USA.

  • I love that she found tannic and astringent notes in this fragrance. Tea drinker here! I live in the USA.

  • I have never tried any of this line, but honestly, it had me at blueberry.. the tannic/tea noites are gravy on the potatoes. I lvwe in the US

  • I liked the summary description in which she stated that if you want a cool, refreshing, floral treat, then this might be perfect. I live in Europe.

  • I am a fan of shay and blue salt caramel which I first read about on your site. Interesting that Gail realized she couldn’t smell blueberries unless she crushed or ate them it’s true and I never thought of it
If blueberry musk is refined floral edgy and smells like vintage mûre et musc I definitely will love it
    I live in Canada
Thank you for a great review and generous drawing

  • I like the Shay & Blue scent Watermelons. Watermelon is a note not done all that often. It’s done well. Blueberry and musk combination sounds fantastic. Looking forward to this, “Heated by the warmth of my skin, Blueberry Musk expanded into aura of berries, flowers and woods as if I was on a picnic in the English Countryside.” 🙂 usa

  • For as many blueberries as I eat, I don’t know that I can really recall the scent of blueberries – so I’m interested in this. I love tea notes though, so the combination of fruit, tea and musk sounds really refreshing, especially for the summer. Thanks for the review, Gail! And, thanks for the generous drawing – I’m in the US.

I love the colour blue. The appeal for this scent is the blueberry scent: I have no trouble smelling blueberries! I can snuffle them out like pigs can find truffles. Around here there tend to grow with a certain type of lichen. The smell of hot blueberries and lichen is amazing.
    Sincerely,

    Carole

  • I appreciate whenever reviewers try to maintain olfactive integrity by ignoring the listed notes. My dream perfume is a blueberry bush done in the style of Diptyque’s Philosykos, and while Blueberry Musk doesn’t seem to be that, I’m interested to get a whiff of what it actually is nonetheless.

No favorites from this line so far, I’m in the USA, thank you for the opportunity to try this new scent.

  • My favourite Shay and Blue is Attropa Belladona! All of them however have something different and I’m sure this one will be great as well! I like the fact that Gail says it doesn’t smell like muffins! i’m in the UK

  • I’ve not tried any of the Shay and Blue fragrances yet — I think they must be easier to find across the pond. At least I have not seen them anywhere in Chicago.

I do find the Shay and Blue fragrance names to be intriguing — Sicilian Limes sounds truly delicious.

I was raised in New England, in a small city where blueberries grew wild and it was easy for us children to find and pick and eat them in the summertime. What a sweet memory.

I enjoyed Gail’s review, and I am delighted to learn that there is no foody pie or muffin aspect to this fragrance!

    I am in the US.

  • I would like to see how this fragrance smells.I am really curious how is ”the picnic in the English Countryside”.Cool-refreshing fragrances are my favorite.I live in Europe.I havent tried any fragrances of this house yet.It will be the first time.Ty for the draw!!!

  • Hah, I like the disclaimer that it doesn’t smell like muffins or pies. Love the art direction on this article, beautiful photos, I thought they were paintings at first. This fragrance sounds deliciously mysterious. I agree with Gail, it’s truly hard to get a sense of what a blueberry smells like until it’s heated or eaten. Thanks for the great article and draw – I’m in Canada.

  • What makes Blueberry Musk truly appealing to me is Gail’s following quote:
“Blueberry Musk a slightly offbeat but still refined, unisex, ethereal fragrance, happily not smelling of muffins or pies. If you are looking for a cool, refreshing, floral treat, a bottle of Blueberry Musk might be the perfect gift for yourself or a close friend.”
A refined, ethereal and unisex fragrance is appropriate for summer time! Up till today I have not experienced any Shay & Blue perfume and I would love to since I have fallen in love with the amazing blue package and the lovely rounded bottles with colored perfume!
Thank you for the lovely review and draw.
I am a registered reader living in EU.

  • Gail, you’ve made this sounds very beautiful: ” a tannic effect of a fine British tea, brightened with the light fresh pucker of citrus” The bottle is nice.
I have not tried anything from this perfume house.

Thanks for the draw! I live in Europe

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I haven’t tried any scents from this house yet (though I constantly covet pictures of bottles I see in reviews), but this one sounds exciting! I appreciated the notion that the first impression wasn’t of fruit, pies, body shop scents, but of bittersweet teach and citrus. I’m also looking for not ostentatiously candied or sweet fruit notes! This sounds as lovely as a picnic on a breezy hill with a great friend. Would love to try this! I’m in the US.

  • I am a big fan of highbush blueberry, it’s so yummy and I likethe delicate scent of the berries. The notes sound lovely and I would love to try this scent.
I have not tested any perfume from Shay & Blue yet but I love the romantic blue bottle and the elegant boxes.
I live in Europe and thanks for the draw!

  • I love this description: “The moderately astringent, tannic effect of a fine British tea, brightened with the light fresh pucker of citrus. Within moments of that first hit, the perfume settled into a pale floral, reminiscent of clear, cool mornings in carefully tended gardens”. I can almost smell the crispy, delicate fragrance, perfect for a morning in the garden, I’d love to try this perfume! I live in the EU.

  • cinnamon tree says:

When I read what Gail wrote about her experiences with Blueberry Musk, I felt I have to try it. I love every possible kind of berries and one of my favorite scents is Mure&Musc by L’Artisan Parfumeur. Many fruity perfumes are too sickeningly sweet so I am glad this one isn’t one of them. Thank you for the article! I am in the EU.

  • Miss Almond says:

“I purposefully ignored the listed notes and simply lived with Blueberry Musk for an entire week” – this is brilliant! I have to start doing this as well, it will be a real adventure and I will be sure that my perception of a scent isn’t altered by unnecessary associations or prejudice that there is some note in it that I usually don’t like. I would love to test Blackberry Musk. Thank you Gail for so honest review. I live in the EU.

  • Miss Almond says:

“Blueberry” not “Blackberry Musk” of course, but I wouldn’t mind testing some blackberry musk one day as well.

  • Wonderful photos and wonderful review. I am currently looking for a perfume like this, a non-invasive one, a little powdery, a little fresh. I guess Blueberry Musk is a scent of that kind. I am curious about its longevity on my skin, because usually musk is rather short-lasting on me. Thanks for the draw! EU.

  • I like the review and I like blueberries. It’s good to know it is not another sweet gourmand scent, although I am not so sure about the unisex properties. Well, at least I don’t perceive Mure et Musc as unisex, maybe Blueberry Musk is less feminine. I would like to try it.
My favorite shay and Blue frgrance is Suffolk Lavender.
Thanks for the draw. I live in the EU,

  • Blue is my favorite color, so I am really excited about this perfume. The bottles and boxes look so elegant in a lovely, old-fashioned way. And blueberries, they make the world a better place! Blueberry Musk sounds like a perfect perfume for me. I hope I’ll win 🙂
I am from the EU. Thank you for this giveaway and keeping my fingers crossed 🙂

  • Iuno Feronia says:

When I was a Child I spent my holidays in the mountains and collected Wild blueberries when they were mature. I somedays ate only blueberries and the smell and the taste I will never forget. Unfortunatly – as Michelyn writes, the blueberries you can buy in the supermarket don’t give you this Sensation. The reviewed
Perfume with its tannin Sounds very interesting and I would try it.

I dont know this perfume House yet.

Thanks for the draw, I live in the EU.

  • Like Dom de Vetta, I love blue color and everything that is blue. Unfortunately, when it comes to fragrance names, “blue” is often a part of a name for some boring aquatic scents smelling like some ordinary antiperspirant. And “blueberry” in perfumes too often means “blueberry muffins”. I hope this fragrance really gives justice to blue and blueberries and their olfactive potential.
    I live in the EU.

  • My favorite Shay and Blue scent is Sicilian Limes but there are some of their scents that I didn’t tested and they sound very promising, like Atropa Belladonna or Salt Caramel. Blueberry Musk also seems to be very interesting.

I love the hoto of Gail’s garden! Gail, please post more pictures of this wonderful place!

I live in EU and thank you for the review and for the draw.

  • I liked Gail’s approach to this review – the fact that she “lived with” the fragrance for multiple wearings and days rather than sitting down to hammer out first impressions. Frankly on first glance I was not intrigued by a blueberry perfume, because I don’t think of blueberries as particularly fragrant. But the allusions to tea and gardens changed my mind… I am very curious! I’m in the US,thanks for the draw.

  • Great review on this house and this fragrance. I have never tried anything from Shay and Blue, but I am definitely interested in some of their creations. I will surely get my hands on a few samples in the near future. I love blueberries so this one sounds like quite a treat for me. I’m in Canada and thank you so much for the draw!
