New Fragrance Review: Shay and Blue Salt Caramel + “The Bliss Point” Perfume Draw

Nigella Lawson covered in salted caramel sauce for Stylist Magazine

In a recent article for Stylist Magazine, Nigella Lawson, surely one of the most sensual and hedonistic cooks of our time, wrote:‘I’m in the middle of a love affair with salted caramel. It’s heady, it’s passionate, it may – like the stalker’s obsessive focus – not be entirely healthy, but I take the view that few in this world have the luxury to be blasé about pleasure…. For me, a “more is more” kind of person, I don’t want merely to experience pleasure; I want to wallow in it – gloriously and gratefully – while it lasts.’

The same could be said of Salt Caramel, the latest release by London-based fragrance house, Shay & Blue. On the skin it is golden, brazen sweet heaven, dusted with salty addiction. The licky-licky salt effect radiates through layers of caramelized musks, beguiling startled senses. You are prepared for sweetness, but the dry, blueness of the saline rub is just fabulously bizarre. It increases one’s craving for the sugar. The contradiction lies in the skin itself; do I go salt or sweet? Yet as with food, we often smell them together, side-by-side. It’s a disconcerting sensation in Salt Caramel; on the cusp of what Nigella refers to in her article as the ‘bliss point’, the moment when the mouth-feel of something is sheer perfection.

Often the honeyed, aurous caramel note is “dissed” by perfumistas as a frivolous effect; a note for neon scents, lattes and Angel clones. But increasingly, more and more niche houses are using this warm enveloping note and weaving it into sophisticated, adult fragrances that enhance and sensualize the skin whilst avoiding the more garish glow and heady residues associated with mainstream foodie fragrances.

Toffee, caramel, cocoa, milk chocolate, popcorn, coconut, candyfloss, muscovado, milk, coffee, loukhoum, marshmallow, dulce de leche, nougat, praline, marzipan, vanilla, crème caramel and honey – all of these things sweeten our lives and delight our palates. (Just reading that list makes me giddy). I rarely indulge in desserts and apart from chocolate and (very good) Turkish delight I rarely go on sugar rampages, but when these things are woven into scent for me to lavish on my skin… oh lordy… I become wild and sweetly out of control.

For me, the key to a successful gourmand fragrance lies in a smooth and accomplished golden confection, a tawny sense of allure that speaks of honeyed skin and aurous, blissful pour. Rather than the sickly jarring augmentation of sugar and tooth in the over the top cloying perfumes of gaudy celebrity. Ultimately, wearing a gourmand is the act of transforming one’s skin into a gustatory playground.

Shay & Blue’s cultured gourmand is one of the finest I’ve worn for a while. Skin smells seriously halcyon and lickable. In the talented hands of perfumer Julie Massé, the thoughtful alliance of caramel and salt has been raised to the olfactive equivalent of classic French patisserie.  Vanilla, sandalwood and tonka bean further enhance the ambrosial lacquer the scent lays down on skin. The tonka in particular has a smoky resonance that works beautifully with the aridity of the salt. In gastronomy, salt has the unusual effect of counteracting any potential bitterness that caramel can sometimes impart to flavour.

It’s still tremendous fun too, after the dazzling rush of salt and sweet it becomes naughty, fulgent and quietly sensual. A scent to indulge in, drown in, over and over again. Do yourselves a scented favour, get some Salt Caramel and get candied this summer.

  • I’ve been wanting to get Alif Oud but this brand is not available in my area. Salt and caramel tastes good to me and I also enjoy spicy and sweet, like a jalapeño jelly. I’m in the US.

  • Welcome Silver Fox and wow did you make that sound delicious! I am dying to try this because I am a huge fan of caramel with sea salt candy. As for unusual flavor pairings, I pick popcorn with Romano cheese. I am in the US.

  • I’ve tried a salted vanilla scent and I really enjoyed it, I think this might have a similar vibe, so I’d love to try it. In terms of food, I think my favorite unuusal combination is a plain yogurt and garlic drink. I love it. I don’t currently have a favorite Shay and Blue Perfume but I am very drawn to the line. I am in the US.

  • I am a fan of salt in perfumes, and in food 🙂 As for unusual flavor pairing, I love blue cheese with almost anything, especially jammy dried figs! I am in the US, thank you.

  • The notes look delectable- I love a “cultured gourmand”. As for unusual flavor pairings, I haven’t tried it, but I’m craving a dark chocolate and Parmesan grilled cheese sandwich. I’m in the US.

  • Great review Silver Fox! This sounds amazing and I would love to check it out. As for my strange combinations…chicken and cheese sandwich with grape jelly. Yumminess. I am in the US! Thanks for the draw!

  • ringthing says:

Fabulous review, can’t wait to try this. A salty perfume note is often wonderful. Favorite odd pairing? The salt/heat/vinegar taste of classic Tabasco sauce goes well with all kinds of things, including a dash in chocolate cake batter and frosting. Thanks for the delectable review and spectacular draw, I’m in the US.

  • Ooooh! Sounds yummy! I love gourmand fragrances. As to an unusual flavor combo that I like – hmmm…can’t think of anything off the top of my head. I’ve tried soo many interesting things at restaurants, though. One that sticks in my mind was beet sorbet with goat cheese snow. It was incredible!!!

I am in the U.S. Thank you for the draw!

  • I totally want some of this. Unusual food pairing would be some chocolate cheddar cheese I found grocery shopping. I’m in the US. Thanks for the draw.

  • Jennifer witt says:

Love salt and carmel. The perfect pairing of sweet and savory. I don’t have a favorite shay and blue fragrance – my favorite unusual flavor combo is Wendy’s fries dipped in their chocolate frostys. I live in the us.

  • Welcome Silver Fox! CaFleureBon is now loaded with a fox and a hound! Looking forward to their contributions. Great review, I adore sweet and salty combinations, in fact my favorite Greek yogurt right now is Caramel and Sea Salt.. 😉 My favorite Shay and Blue is Blood Oranges, fabulous composition. I love playing with flavor combinations. Right now it’s a flavor combo is of ripe rich sweet fig, with Kiwi drizzled with fresh Kaffir lime juice. I am in the US and thanks to Shay and Blue for the draw!

  • The only Shay & Blue scent I’ve tried is Oud Alif but I’d like to try the entire line. This one sounds delectable as I’m quite fond of salted caramel and very interested to see how those notes are played out in fragrance form without becoming cloying. I don’t have any unusual combos to suggest…I tend to play it pretty safe with food! I am in the U.S.

  • I am totally appealed to by this sentence: “On the skin it is golden, brazen sweet heaven, dusted with salty addiction. The licky-licky salt effect radiates through layers of caramelized musks, beguiling startled senses” I was already a convert to this pairing- I get an ice cream of the same here in New Zealand and I could smear it all over as well! I also love the unusual pairing of Tamarind, Chilli and Mango. Thank you for the generous draw. I am international. I’m sorry I do not have a fav Shay and blue perfume as I have not had the pleasure to try as yet. Think it would be Salt Caramel tho’

  • Welcome Silver Fox!! What a great review. Have not tried any Shay & Blue scents, this one sounds amazing!
Am a huge fan of caramel & salt so this sounds great.
A favorite strange combo of mine is to dip Hot fresh French Fries into a Wendy’s Frostie.
I live in the U.S. Thanks for the draw!

  • I love salt in perfumes. I have three perfumes with salty nuances: Sandflowers, vintage Dune and Kingdom. And I love to use them in the summer especially . Salt with caramel sounds really good, I’m sure salt gives balance to the sweet composition and brings intriguing moments.
My favorite unusual flavor combination is warm pancakes with cheese and honey)
I’ve never tried Shay and Blue perfumes and I wish to try.
I’m in Russia. Thanks for the draw!

  • I’ve always loved the scent of caramel, and the taste of salt and caramel is a favorite. Reminds me of a salted caramel latte. Another taste combo I enjoy is dark chocolate with chili pepper! I live in the US. Not familiar with other Shay & Blue perfumes but this one is certainly right up my alley.

  • I love gourmand fragrances and this one you have made sound irresistable! I was sold just looking at the caramel dripping off Nigella! I am not familiar with this line of perfumes but this one certainly sounds like it could be my favorite. I like chocolate chip cookies sprinkled with sea salt. Im in the US

  • Everything appeals about this fragrance- caramel, salt, vanilla, tonka bean. All of my favorite notes. I would love to get a bottle of this. Thank you for the giveaway. As for a strange flavor pairing, I love to eat yellow cheese and red oniions.

I’ve never tried anything from Shay & Blue, but I would love to. I’m in the US.

    Thank you.

  • silvrolive says:

I would love to try this gourmand scent. Your review of Salted Caramel makes it sound irresistible! As someone who has a serious sweet tooth (at least when it comes to scents) this is right up my alley. I haven’t tried any other Shay & Blue scent, now I am interested. My strange flavor pairing is smoked gouda cheese with dark chocolate. I live in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • I would love to try this one and got a kick out of the description “fabulously bizarre.” That’s enough for me! I haven’t tried any Shay & Blue fragrances, but the house is on my list.

Not so much a strange pairing, and 180 degrees from salted caramel, but I love the smell of garlic and ginger when I chop them up for stir fries.

    I live in the US.

  • This sounds so delicious. What is more irresistible than salted caramel? Yummm… I can’t wait to try this.
As for flavor pairing, I have recently found that chocolate and chili make for an interesting and pleasurable experience. I know this combo is not new but I have never tried it until recently and it is quite addictive.

I’m in Canada. Thanks for the draw

  • Franfan20 says:

I want to try Salt Caramel because I love gourmand scents and foodie scents. It sounds like something I might like a could write a good review about.

I like the pairing of watermelon and chocolate. Milka used to have a flavor once for a limited summer edition. At first bite it was unusual, but after that it tasted delicious and I ate 4 bars over the time it was available. They could bring it back.

    Thanks and greetings from germany.

  • This Shay and Blue sounds delectable, salt brings out sweetness in many foods, and I also love chilli with chocolate.
And the Thai combination of sweet, sour, salt and chilli.
I live in Australia, and thank you for this draw!

  • I love salted caramel and would like to try it in scent. As for unusual pairings: I think that strawberry is great with pepper and so is melon. I live in the EU. Thanks for the draw.

  • claire sprigmore says:

Yum this sounds utterly delicious. I really enjoy sweet and salty tastes combined. I was visiting friends in South Africa and after much persuasion I tried their staple comfort food of jam and cheese sandwiches, quite lovely actually (konfyt en kaas is the Afrikaans). I am most attracted to the sound of the smoky tonka in this perfume and would love to try it. I have not yet had the pleasure of experiencing a Shay and Blue fragrance. I’m in the UK and thanks for the opportunity to win.

  • Dubaiscents says:

This entire scent sounds like something I would love. I especial like to hear that that Tonka gives it a little smokiness with the sweet and salty. As for unusual combinations, it is not to eat but, I like to occasionally smoke flavored tobacco in the water pipe that is a combo of grape and mint. I live in the UAE and I wish this brand was available locally.

  • I love anything sweet and sour and my favorite savory dishes always have something sweet in them, fruit, nuts or honey has gone into the mix. It’s exactly this dissonance which appeals to me in Salt & Caramel. I love chocolate with malt centers precisely because the malt is salty!

I have been very much wanting to try their Blood Orange but have not yet had the chance to sample this UK brand as I live in South Africa:)

  • I love gourmands, and this scent is definitely capturing my interest. As for an unusual flavor pairing- not exactly high brow, but the mouth-pucking sour sweetness of Sour Patch kids always made my mouth water when I was little. I’m in the US, and haven’t tried anything from the line Shay & Blue.

  • This sounds amazing! I am truly addicted to sweets! The salt and sweet combo is unmatched! When i was a kid, I loved to eat strawberry jam spread on a slice of american cheese!
Thanks for the draw. I am in the US.

  • The perfect balance of sweet and salty, I am drooling here in the US.
    Like cheese on pancakes, yum.

  • Ifi Genial says:

I love all gourmand smells and like salt and caramel I also adore the combination of chocolate and pepper of any kind (white or black chocolate with any kind of pepper, the mix of sweet and spicy is delicious, yummy !!!)
I live in EU and I thank you both for this review and lovely draw.

  • The SEA SALT appeals to me. 🙂 Recently discoverd bacon and chocolate goes very well.
    usa

  • I would love to try Salt Caramel because I love gourmand scents. I live in the U.S.
    Thank you for the draw!

  • julesinrose says:

Ever since I’ve heard about Shay & Blue’s Salt Caramel I’ve wanted to try it. It sounds yummy! I love the smell of caramels and I’m not sure I understand what they smell of salt is, so I’m oh so curious (and I do love a good gourmand). I have not had the pleasure of trying any Shay & Blue scent – but oh, do I want to try Alif Oud, too, ever since Alex Law gave it such an incredible rave review. Unusual flavor pairings? Hmm. I like espresso and anise ice cream. Maybe that’s not unusual in Italy. I’m not sure. In the US, still. Thanks for the draw!

  • Salt Caramel, what curious fragrance! I want to spay it on my skin and then lose myself in sweet-salty thoughts!! I’m sure that the sweet gourmand combined with salty notes is something…
Salt Caramel, I hope that we will meet very soon! 🙂

  • Honey and jalapeno!!! What a moutwatering review, thank you Mr. Fox. Salt Caramel had me at the opeing picture of Nigella Lawson. I am a fan of Oud Alif, which has a nice chocolatey note.

  • This sounds delicious! The blend of salt and tonka sounds just perfect. As for weird flavor combos I like, hum… I like pepper in my chocolate, but that’s becoming quite mainstream now! 😉

    cheers from hk!

  • Lubka K. (@Klubka) says:

I ve never own sweet-salty fragrance but I would like to have one and try it on my skin. Do I go salty or sweet? .:-) I did remember my first smell of Womanity with its caviar, chutney and fig. Really interesting fragrance. And I like pairing vodka, tobacco and chocolate in BLV Notte. In EU. Thanks

  • Cindy-Lou says:

Skin smells seriously halcyon and lickable! I know know that I want my skin to smell just like this! An interesting paring for me is floral ice cream. There is something delicious about edible flowers. I live in the US.

  • The Silver Fox says:

Hello everyone… The Silver Fox here. Just wanted to say hello and thank you for the warm welcome you have afforded my first post for CaFleureBon. Thank u too for all the lovely (and delicious) comments too. Writing on ‘Salt Caramel’ was a joy and I hope you all get a chance to sample it soon. I adore Shay and Blue scents, I have them all pretty much! The scents are beautifully singular, each one exploring classic perfumery tenets with pizazz and style. I hope u enjoy my posts to come, I have lots of ideas and scents swirling around in my head.

  • Kim Morgan says:

Any kind of food scent is an immediate win for me — except for licorice or anisette. I’m drawn to things with a clove smell, too… and that pumpkin/clove/something very like fall scent is always a draw.

  • Latifah S says:

This perfume sounds delectable. I enjoy Old Bay flavored potato chips and dark chocolate or Reeses Pieces… depending on the day… All together works as well. (Salty with the sweet). Yummy! I have not had the pleasure to try any Shay and Blue perfumes. I live in the US. Thanks for the opportunity. 🙂

  • Latifah S says:

Hello Silver Fox. I enjoyed the review very much and look forward to your future contributions. I did, however, get a tad hungry. 😉

  • I really LOVE the scent of caramel, so I think this might be my perfect scent…and I really like Hilde Soliani Fraagola Saalaaata which is Strawberry & Salt, which I thought was an odd combination…I’m not as adventurous with food flavors, I think the oddest flavor combination I enjoy is maybe chocolate and green tea (a Asian Kit Kat flavor, so it’s not really THAT unusual, only unusual for the United States). I haven’t tried anything from Shay & Blue before. I live in the US.

  • Fazal Cheema says:

Sal Caramel almost seems like a dessert from Middle East or maybe Turkey…..this perfume experiment also reminds me of snacks in certain parts of the world that go for contrast between salt and sugar….unusual pairing by American standards that i usually go for is french fries and ranch…i like ranch more than ketchup actually…i am in the US

  • What appeals me the most about caramel smell is the cuddling effect it gives: it’s so soothing, warm, a bit sticky like its consistence. I adore desserts containing caramel, especially the pannacotta with baked caramel on top.. mmmmmh!!
As for sugar/salt combinations, I adore croissants filled with mayonnaise and ham (please, don’t laugh), and I like all sorts of sweets having a bit of salt in them (Swedish licorice, sweets, etc.). Probably, the most unusual the best for me!
That’s why reading this review for Shay and Blue Salt Caramel makes me very interested: I love gourmand fragrances, but I probably have to find the perfect one for me.. most of the times it’s a vanilla+amber+some fruits thing, the only “sweet-salty” scents I’ve tried were L by Lolita Lempicka and Moschino Glamour. I so would love to experience the sensual feel of Salt Caramel, its “French Patisserie” feel, it really sounds like something different from that crowded family of fragrances.. I cross my fingers.
I am in EU, thanks for the draw!

  • It’s just that I still haven’t found a gourmand to please me utterly! That’s why every new gourmand on the fume scene should be tested! My curiosity is even bigger because I am not fond of the taste of salty caramel ice-cream, for instance, but I like its smell…My odd go-to scent combination is again salty, but coupled with vetiver or patchouli, like Sel de Vetiver – The Different Company, Fleurs de Sel – Miller Harris or M/Mink – Byredo.
I am in EU, and I have never tested anything fro Shay & Blue.

  • I love the combination of sweet and salty in food, and am intrigued by the pairing in this perfume. I enjoy a bit of sea salt sprinkled on watermelon or chocolate. Shay and Blue is a line I haven’t yet had a chance to try; I’m in the US.

  • I’ve not tried any Shay and Blue yet, but I’m interested. Caramel and Salt sounds like an interesting combination. I like to combine peanut butter with anything, absolutely anything.
    I’m in the EU, ty

  • I absolutely love caramel, in all it’s edible and smellable forms.
Therefore I hope to have the luck of winning this one.
    Thank You!

  • I love salted caramel ice-cream but have never heard of salted caramel perfume. If I wear this perfume while eating my favourite ice-cream, will it enhance the taste of my ice-cream. I’ve never tried a gourmand fragrance which gets naughty later. It leaves so much to imagine. Singapore.

  • Mmmmmmmm… reading this review has made my mouth water. I love the play of flavours in food and to have it replicated here with Salt Caramel is just intriguing. One of the strangest but yummiest dessert I enjoy is a creation from a local bakery here. It’s called a Sushi Cake. Think spring roll wrapped with seaweed and filled spicy meat floss and crispy cucumber and carrot. Savoury, sweet and strange, it’s unbelievably delish!

  • Jennifer B in SF says:

I love the first photo of Nigella! I’m intrigued by this perfume. I like unusual flavor combinations – the latest ice cream flavor I tried was chocolate and smoked sea salt. Totally weird, but delicious! I live in the US. Thanks.

  • I love the combination of savoury and sweet. Somehow it conveys to me the feeling of being on the beach, suntan lotion and salted skin. That combination is gourmand and sensual at the same time. Other than salted candies, a flavour combination I enjoy and some find weird is unsalted goat’s cheese, banana and honey wrapped in pita bread. You might want to try it. I on the other hand want to try Salt Caramel. Cheers

  • Grace Mowat says:

This sounds so good! I’ve always loved salted caramel (and salted dark chocolate for that matter), along with chilli and chocolate it’s a beautiful combination! I think it’s the combination of salty and sweet.

I have quite a few different combinations I like that are considered kind of odd – bacon with m&ms, avocadoes with cinnamon (or chili powder), candied salami (salami I dip in sugar and bake), celery and marmite/vegemite, and I dip my french fries in ice cream and chocolate sauce. All delicious!

I live in Australia and was introduced to Shay & Blue by a friend who works at David Jones. My absolute favourite is Almond Cucumber – I never go for summery perfumes because I find them too flat or uninteresting, but there’s something about this one that I really enjoy!

  • I love salty and sweet! Gourmands are my favorites, I can’t resist indulging, and I just want to dive right into this Salt Caramel. Another interesting flavor pairing I enjoy is nutty and spicy, together. Yum. Thanks so much for this amazing draw. I’m in the U.S. I haven’t tried any Shay & Blue yet, but I can’t wait to try this one.

  • My unusual flavor pairing is peanut butter and crushed red peppers. Yummy. I am in the U.S. I have not tried any Shay & Blue as of now. There are a couple on my radar. I would like to try this one because I wouldn’t mind smelling halcyon and lickable.

  • This sounds truly wonderful, I love Greek Yoghurt which is salty caramel. I have just started buying it. very delightful. I think Shay and Blue would be wonderful as an entree to this brand. I have never tried it before,
Thank you for the opportunity, I am in the US

  • Pomponio Claudia says:

Caramel is one of my favourite flavor all around and I often look for scents that have This smell.. So looking forward to try This new Fragrance . I live in EU thanks

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

The liquid temptation of Salt Caramel appeals to me as I love sea salt caramel truffles. An unusual flavor pairing I enjoy is chocolate and chili, but I’m not sure I’d like to wear it. I live in the US and I haven’t yet tried a Shay & Blue Perfume, but I think I’d like Almond Cucumber.

  • USA
Thanks for the tempting review and draw! Everything about Salt Caramel appeals to me. It’s one of my favorite flavors, in any form–sticky caramels with any kind of salt, as a flawor of froyo or ice cream, regular caramel smooshed with salted nuts…the list is endless. I adore salted caramel with rosemary especially–first had this as McCrea’s (not affiliated, just a fan) then recreated with Trader Joe’s rosemary almonds + fleur de sel caramels. It’s *so good*!
Don’t think of most flavor combos as strange. But I went thru a pepper phase and put it on everything including cake.
Never Tried Shay & Blue but Oud ALif sounds awesome too!

  • I live caramel! Have read very positive comments about the scents of Shay and Blue, but have not been able to test something! Such a nice combination it must be cacao, coconut, chocolate… I would be so happy to have this and to test it!!! I live in Germany

  • Thus far, I like the entire line!
Gourmand scents are not usually my go-tos, but it sounds as if Salt Caramel might just turn that around. Hmmm… I just bought Sea Salt Caramels from my fav chocolatier this morning, come to think of it.

My other preferred combo is ginger and Parm-Reg cheese.

  • I’ve never tried a Shay and Blue fragrance, but I do love a good gourmand, especially when it involves caramel. One of my favorite flavor combinations is camembert cheese drizzled with honey. I live in the US.

  • Since Fresh stopped making Tobacco Caramel I have been searching for a new scent that mixes with my body and one that everyone does not have. I do not have any of your fragrances as I only found them looking for tobacco caramel scents. I would be over the moon to have this scent. Peanut butter and dill pickle sandwiches are my favorite “weird” food. I am in the USA.
    Thanks !
