New Fragrance Review: Roger & Gallet Fleure de Figuier + Bang For The Buck Draw

It’s time for a pop quiz. Name the perfume house which has had different fragrances composed by perfumers Dominique Ropion, Mathilde Bijaoui, Nathalie Lorson, Alberto Morillas, and Dominique Ropion; and retails for around $30 USD per ounce. I think it would be the rare perfumista who would name Roger & Gallet as the right answer. Roger & Gallet is one of my favorite “bargain” brands of perfume. As a company they show that our greatest perfumers can create even when on a strict budget. For 2013 they add to their roster of all-star perfumers with Francis Kurkdjian who is the creative force behind the latest release, Fleure de Figuier.

M. Kurkdjian wanted to capture all that there is to capture of a fig tree. In the press release he says, “Focusing solely on the idea of the tree would have misrepresented the concept. Since the fig is also a flower, I gave it a light dimension, more delicate and modern than anything previously created and therefore based the formula on a floral structure. The next step was to incorporate the fruit, but giving it a new aspect as it is often portrayed in a purely raw dimension, a harmony of green and unripe notes.” As M. Kurkdjian notes there are many fig fragrances out there but Fleure de Figuier is something which feels very modern and very different from the other fig scents I own. Fleure de Figuier carries a freshness, which is not trite, over a smooth downy soft heart and base. Fleure de Figuier is a fragrance which wears as easy as a broken-in denim jacket. It feels like it is an effortless perfume and it surrounds me with a sun burnished moment in a Mediterranean grove of fig trees.

Fleure de Figuier uses citrus, in the presence of mandarin and grapefruit, and to that M. Kurkdjian adds caraway. I have mentioned this in the past but I do not know why more perfumers do not use caraway as an alternative to bergamot. The caraway used here in conjunction with the citrus notes creates a vibrant beginning. The fact that caraway is not so common allows for this opening to feel very contemporary. In the heart we get down to the titular notes as M. Kurkdjian takes the green of fig leaves and uses them in overdose to on top of the fruit itself. The fruit, here, is a green, not quite ripe, fig and the leaves impart an even deeper sense of green and also evoke the floralcy M. Kurkdjian mentioned. Together they create a blossom effect more than a fruit effect. The tree itself is represented by cedar drenched in fig milk, luscious, woody, and creamy. The final note is almost a trademark of M. Kurkdjian as he weaves a synthetic white musk across the base notes.

Fleure de Figuier has about six to eight hour longevity and above average sillage.

Fleur-de-Figuier

Fleure de Figuier is one of the best perfumes M. Kurkdjian has made in the past two years. It is clear to me that he was really inspired to make something special with his first fig fragrance. He has succeeded so well that I would easily name Fleure de Figuier one of the best fig scents I own. Furthermore Fleure de Figuier is one of the best new fragrances of 2013 and at the price it is crazy not to own this. If you have never explored Roger & Gallet you owe yourself the pleasure of discovering some of the best perfume by some of the best perfumers at one of the best prices; start with Fleure de Figuier and enjoy the trip.

Disclosure: This review was based on a bottle of Fleure de Figuier I purchased.

  • Choosing a favorite bang-for-buck is hard…but lately I’ve been wearing Silky Underwear and Breath of God by LUSH/Gorilla and Gold by Donna Karan (had for a song on ebay). Wow, I feel like there are so many more I”m forgetting! I’d LOVE to try M. Kurkdjian’s take on fig; I’ve been holding off biting the bullet and ordering the EDP of Philosykos… and I live in the U.S.

  • The biggest bang for your buck fragrance is any of the Caron masculine scents, particularly Caron Pour Homme, Caron Le 3 Homme, and Yatagan. A 125 ml bottle can had under $40 or less. They’re classic, smell great, and will never go out of style.I am in the US. Thanks for the draw. This sounds like a terrific fragrance. Can’t wait to try it!

  • My favorite fragrance in my arsenal is Blue Lotus by Alkemia Perfumes. Smells like $120 but only 10% of the cost. I am in the U.S.

I’m in the US. I love Bulgari Black, which I have seen for pretty reasonable prices here and there.

  • For commercial perfume I like Spazio per Donna by Krizia, reasonable if you can find it. Fig sounds great, would love to try.

  • Oh I love anything with fig!

I would say the Egyptian Goddess perfume oil by Auric Blends. It’s 8.95! It’s smells like heaven- I can’t really describe!

  • I would have to say my Deluxe Sampler from Ineke Perfumes (their alphabet collection): 8 2mL vials for $25 and it basically gives me an entire natural perfume wardrobe in a little box, for a great price! Although Chemical Bonding and Hothouse Flower may end up being full bottle purchases for me 😉

    I am in the US.

  • My best bang for the buck was a big bottle of no name chevrefeuille cologne I bought in St. Martin several years ago, and the other is White Lotus Aromatics Gulab Attar diluted in a little jojoba oil. I’m in the US–thanks for the draw!

  • This fig sounds great! I like the fig line and others from Pacifica, the lotions work with lots of different other perfumes as well. I am in US, thanks for a great offer.

  • Oh wow! I’ve been dying to try an R&G fragrance for a long time, and I’m always looking for more figs for my collection. I’d love to win this.

My ‘best bargain’ fragrance is probably RL Lauren (the original vintage). You can still score it for very cheap, and it’s so sophisticated. I adore it, even after all these years. I also love SJP Lovely, which is often criticized by the perfumista community, but I really think it’s a lovely skin scent.

  • My favorite affordable fragrance is probably Philosophy’s L’Occitane’s Fleur Cherie, which I have in a travel roll-on eau de toilette. Much cheaper still, is Avon’s Far Away… dirt cheap, pleasant, with impressive sillage. And Avon doesn’t test on animals, which is huge for me. Anyway, I love fig as a note, and am in the US. Thank you!

  • My favorite “bang for the buck” is one that’s already been mentioned – Bvlgari Black. I found my bottle at a discount store. It’s one of my favorite scents, too! Would love to try this. Now I’m going to look at the rest of the line! Thanks!

  • I have couple of Yves Rocher Pur desir that I bought for $17. Lilas and Mimosa. I don’t think I have something cheaper than those that I like as much.

I would love to try this new R&G.

  • Being a lover of figs, this sounds lovely. My favorite bang for your buck fragrance is Mauboussin Histoire d’Eau which is perfect for fall; a potpourri of dried orange peel, cardamom and soft leather. I’m in the US.

  • One of my favorite Best Bang for your Buck is Davidoff,Fino. Great woody scent. A rich rosewood fragrance that is not overpowering. Good longevity and sillage. A real pleasant expirence.

  • Wow, I didn’t know so many great perfumers have worked on this line. And as a fig lover this sounds right up my alley. I am a long time believer in cheap scents can be great too with several in my collection. One I just wore is Stetson by Coty – so classic and elegant! Also Jovan Musk for Women is a favorite. (US)

  • My favorite bang for the buck is Elizabeth Arden’s Spiced Green Tea, which I believe is also by M. Kurkdjian. I can still find a bottle for under $20 here in the USA.

  • I love fig and this one sounds very good. Will try to search it out. Some of my favorite great bargains have been a few Demeter’s (I just bought Wet Garden for $4.99 at Rite Aid) and many Pacifica. JLo’s Still is a nice, long lasting tea frag. I wore SJP’s Lovely yesterday. I also love Jovan’s Sex Appeal for Men on my husband. I’m in the U.S. Thanks!

  • My favorite value perfume would have to be SJP Lovely…I can find a 3.4 oz bottle for around $25 on the web. That’s a steal! Thanks for the draw and I’m in the U.S.

  • This fig sounds nice. I didn’t realize so many big name perfumers worked for the line. One of my favorite cheap buys is Lucy B Pink Frangipani. The small bottle is pretty inexpensive. I’m in the US.

  • I live in the US and have to admit that i don’t really have a ‘bang for the buck’ fragrance. Although, Pacifica’s fig scent is pretty nice… but Philosykos is definitely my preference.

  • wefadetogray says:

Oh my goodness, anything by Mr. Kurkdjian must be sampled immediately. I think I dont own any perfume I have been lucky enough to find at a cheaper or more moderate price. My less expensive perfumes are all from Estee Lauder and I love them.
Thanks for this draw. I am in the US.

  • Beautiful fig picture up top, yum.

I’m in the USA where my bang for the buck goes to perennial crowdpleaser Lolita Lempicka, which smells more expensive than it is and seems to well fitted to a wider array of occasions than other perfumes.

  • Oh I would love to try this, since I adore Philosykos! I live in the US. I have two other R&G samples, very lovely. Some of my great cheap thrills have been Donna Karan Gold (which I just sold as I just don’t wear it), Outremer Vanille for under 20 at Beauty Encounter, just nabbed Yves Rocher Voile d’Ambre for 34 with full size matching shower gel, any Lauders, Caron Pour Une Femme, anything from Tokyomilk, old Chloe and Ellen Tracy finds at TJ Maxx and Marshall’s, the smaller bottles and scent trio from A Wing and a Prayer. the list goes on!

  • I am in the US. It is hard to define just one bang for the buck. But speaking of Fig, Salvatore Ferragamo pour homme. Believe there is caraway in this one as well. Great spicy fig that drys down to an earthy musk. Thanks for the draw!

  • My favorite Bang for the Buck scent is Love’s Baby Soft. I used to wear it in high school, way back before electricity, and I found it online and wear it to bed. It’s soft, comforting, and powdery.

  • I live in the U.S. My favorite bang for buck perfume is vintage Ma Griffe found at the Goodwill for $3, if we are talking new perfumes it has to be the classic 4711. I love fig perfumes.

  • helical gnome says:

Premier Figuier is one of my all time favorites perfumes, although, strangely enough, I do not like Philosykos as everyone told me I would. I love figs so I’d love to try this. Regarding my bang for a buck, a couple of years ago I found on ebay a Chanel Blue for half the price. The bottle was opened though.
    I am in the US.

  • Fazal Cheema says:

For me it has to be Grey Flannel (even versions until last year were beautiful)..Grey Flannel is also one of those fragrances that took years for me to appreciate it and now i consider it a work of art

  • My favorite bang for the buck fragrance is definetely Tocade, by Rochas. It’s an amazing perfume and the price is even better.

  • I think Olympia Orchids in general are great for what they cost. In particular, I enjoy A Midsummer Day’s Dream. I am in the U.S.

  • My favorite bang for the buck scent is Cuir de Lancome. One of the best leather/suede perfumes around. Thanks for the draw; I live in the US, and I love anything FIG!

  • I love Isesy Miyaki L’eau de Issey that I got for a very cheap price. This fragrance is unique and executes class. I love Francis kurkdijan’s work so I’m curious about this one too.
    Thanks

  • I live in the US and my go to fragrance. My everyday perfume is Billet Doux by Fragonard. Inexpensive, feminine, and I love the bottle to boot. I love fig. Particularly “L’Artisan, Dyptique, and Jo Malone so curious about this one!

  • David Johnson says:

My favorite bang for buck is Mont Blanc Individuel. Thank you for doing this giveaway! I’d love to win this! Sounds amazing. I hope I win! 😀

I’m in the US, and a low-priced perfume I love that hasn’t been mentioned yet is Barbara Bui, a lovely soft amber that can be worn to work or anywhere else. Thanks for the draw!

  • I love Halle Berry’s original fragrance for my bang for the buck. I recently picked up her Mimosa Essence at TJMaxx for $7.99. I have read she likes to mix fig and mimosa for her signature. Thanks for the draw! I live in the US.
