New Fragrance Review: Neela Vermeire Creations Mohur Extrait + Crowns and Roses Draw

Woman listening to a gramophone, Peter Zelei

Imagine the voice of the one you loved and lost. The one you will never get over as long as you live. A voice husky from whiskey and from wanting you, which will never vocalize high tones of joy again, but which is beautiful in the depths of its brokenness. Imagine that it is years too late, that they are gone from this earth and the only way you can hear that voice is in your dreams. Imagine you stumble upon some recording device, and there is a message for you on it from them saying they never stopped loving you all these years. It would make you weep. This is how Neela Vermeire’s Mohur Extrait de Parfum makes me feel.

PaintingofNurJahan

Painting of Empress Nur Jahan

The inspiration for Mohur was Empress Nur Jahan, chief consort of Emperor Jahangir of India’s Mughal Empire. Their romance was legendary, but her husband fell into addiction and the empress ended up running the land. After much political upheaval and her husband’s death, she spent the remainder of her life in luxurious confinement, where she devoted her time to artistic pursuits, including perfumery.

Empress Nur’s story brings to mind conversations I have had many times with friends about what it really means to be a "Queen" or a "King". There are many who think they are royalty,by birthright or by their fame; they demand attention and wear a sense of entitlement like a red ermine robe. They are pretenders. The real nobility are entirely different. Through history they have fought in the trenches with their people, rallied spirits when there was no hope, and shed blood for freedom. Some of their names have gone down in history, like Joan of Arc or Mahatma Gandhi. Others will mostly be forgotten in a generation, like the band who played on the deck of the Titanic.

neela vermeire mohur extrait

 Neela Vermeire Mohur Extrait

To make what may be the greatest rose fragrance of our generation is a feat, although how can a perfume equate with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. or Abraham Lincoln. And yet this collaboration between Neela Vermeire and Bertrand Duchaufour brings to mind Michelangelo or Van Gogh. True art is one of the chief pleasures of being human. This fragrance, in all of its rapture, smells of the certainty that all was worth it, and the sense of relief when the pain ends. It is the reward I hope with all my heart that heroes recieve and deserve, whoever they are. They are the royals.

Notes are cardamom, coriander, ambrette, carrot, black pepper, elemi, Turkish rose oil, jasmine, hawthorn, almond milk accord, leather, sandalwood, amber, patchouli, oudh Palao from Laos, benzoin, vanilla, and tonka bean. If you have tried the eau de parfum version of Mohur, you will find the scents are similar but the new, concentrated version is deeper, richer, smoother, and absolutely unforgettable. I can’t dissect it into stages because it’s almost a religious experience.

As of this writing, Mohur Extrait is available only from Neela Vermeire in the EU as a limited edition, numbered French flacon. I hope that it will be introduced to other markets soon, (Editor’s Note: Mohur Extrait will be available at select stockists in the Fall) because this rich, creamy, dark but transcendent rose is truly a visionary work of olfactive art.

DISCLAIMER: This review was based upon a sample won in a draw from NVC.

  • My favorite so far has been Ashoka. I had a sample that I hoarded but alas it’s gone. I live in the US. Thanks for the draw and the fascinating description.

  • Janet in California says:

I have not yet tried the Mohur extrait but it sounds remarkable! Every other NV creation I have loved, especially Trayee. I live in the US.

    Thanks!

  • These notes would drive me insane: leather, sandalwood, amber, patchouli, oudh Palao from Laos- very appealing is what I’m saying in plain English- Im international and thank you for the draw. Congratulations as well to Neela -well desrved!

  • julesinrose says:

A friend sent me a 1/2 ml sample of Mohur. It is GORGEOUS. That’s what appeals to me about it, lol! I love roses. I love sandalwood. And I love everything Duchaufour. He’s become my perfume hero. Thanks for the lovely, lovely draw! Cheers. In the US still. . .

  • I must say there are few perfume houses that the entire line grabs me and wont let go. NVC is one of those, recent changes in life have made this a bit more difficult for me. I do have all of the line except the Extrait even if some are just the discovery size. Mohur was my first love for very personal reasons that I simply can not express freely at present. I have no doubt that the extrait would reinforce those personal reasons deeper into my fragrant emotional bank. I’m in the US and Thanks for the draw.

  • After months of smelling new releases that did nothing for me, one sniff of Mohur extrait a friend shared with me made me SWOON. She said there was such a look of joy on my face! I live in the USA and would love, love, love to win 10 mls of this.

  • My fav frag is Mohur and the most exciting part was the comparison to a ” religious experience”. What else could I ask for?
I am in US. Wonderful draw. Thank you.

  • my favorites are mohur (both the EDP & the extrait – roses for days!) & trayee (juicy tart fruity incense). i live in the states. thank you for this opportunity!

  • I love the Mohur EDP, so I’m really dying to get my nose on the extrait, particularly after reading this. I live in the US…thank you for the wonderful draw!

  • The beginning paragraph of this review tugs at my heartstrings until they ache. I recently lost my mother and would so love to hear her voice again. She smoked and loved a good cocktail and vintage perfume!
That paragraph along with the description of the notes and beautiful bottle of Mohur Extrait is enough for me to desire it but I will add that I adore fragrant roses too.
I’m in the US. Thank you!

  • I would love to try the Mohur extrait because of the quality of Neela’s fragrances. It is difficult to choose a fragrance, but for now, my favorite is Ashoka.

  • Fazal Cheema says:

thanks for the draw..my favorite Neela Vermeire fragrance is Ashoka. I am in the US

  • I think all of NVC are great, the ingredients are top nodge and the perfumes are all perfectly composed. My personal favorite is Bombay Bling!, because it’s a fun fragrance with enormous dept and still perfect for summer. I would love to own a 10 ml. bottle of the Mohur extrait.

Thank you Neela Vermeire (and congratulations on winning the Art + Olfaction award) and ÇaFleureBon for this wonderful draw. And thank you Nancy for your beautiful review.

  • What an absolutely beautiful and touching review. Like Suzinn I was deeply moved by the opening paragraph.
I am not familiar with Neela Vermeire perfumes other than by reputation. Looking on the website I found it fascinating that each was inspired by different time periods in India and that Bertrand Duchaufour who is my favorite perfumer created them.
I would like to know more about Empress Nur.
I would choose Mohur extrait as my favorite based on this review as I love but have not found my perfect rose perfume and secondly Ashoka as the story of this king was equally powerful.
    I live in the US

  • I have tried the Edp version of Mohur and am now very intrigued to smell the extrait. Thank you for a fantastic draw, I am in the UK.

  • I have gone through 2 decants of Mohur, and am hoping to find the extrait one day. It echoes the exoticism of India so perfectly and I love it.
What a wonderful draw, I am in Australia.

  • If you describe something as dark and creamy than I will probably want to try it, add in the rose and then you can be sure I will want to try it. I live in Romania, EU.

  • Ifi Genial says:

I would love to try the Mohur extrait because of the ingredient notes that it contains so rich that make this unique perfume “absolutely unforgettable” as dear Tama says.
I live in EU (Greece) and I have to thank you for the opportunity you give me to participate in such a lovely draw!

  • Neela Vermeire had a masterpiece with Mohur edp..the extrait version is just the best and most gorgeous treat ever!! A richer and more intoxicating version of the rose laden Mohur cannot be missed. Although Trayee touchs me and brings back memories of home, surprisingly, Ashoka has become one of my favourite perfumes…
Thank you for this generous draw ( Ps. I live in Europe)

  • I smelled Mohur EDP a few months ago and it impressed me deeply. It is such a beautiful spicy rose, that I remained speechless. The experience was near to mystical. I can not imagine something superior to that, as olfactory experience. If you say the extrait is even better, that means it is out of this world.
The background story of Mogul and Wife is heartbreakingly beautiful and the perfume suits the concept perfectly.
Oh, I pray to have luck to win the extrait, I wish it so much!
Thank you for the wonderful opportunity.
    I live in Romania, EU.

  • Mohur is my favorite Neela Vermeire fragrance, without a doubt. I like Trayee and Bombay Bling as well. I’ve yet to try Ashoka. Like everyone else who has commented, I would love to win 10 ml of Mohur extrait. I live in the US.

  • silvrolive says:

What an eloquent and lyrical review! I have been searching for a deep rich rose and would love to try Mohur Extrait. I live in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • I’ve never tried anything by Neela Vermeire, unfortunately.. this review seems to describe something almost magical and arcane, I so would love to try Mohur Extrait along with her other fragrances. “It is the reward I hope with all my heart that heroes recieve and deserve, whoever they are. They are the royals”: so true…
I am in Italy, thanks for the chance!

  • I have only been able to try Bombay Bling and Ashoka, and of the two Ashoka is my favorite. I am in the US,it would be such a privilege to win 10 mls!!! thank you for the draw.

  • I have never tried any of Neela Vermeire’s perfumes but have wanted to and now even more so. The first paragraph had me with credit card in hand immediately. Absolutely beautiful and moving. Rose is one of my favorite notes and the Mohur Extrait sounds perfect. I live in the US. Thank you.

  • i have a full bottle of the mohur perfume, but i would dearly love to try the extrait! it sounds even more glorious!

the original mohur was my favorite of the lineup because i’m a sucker for rose and delicious creamy woods combined…

    i’m based in the US.

  • I have and love all of Neela’s perfumes, with the exception of the Mohur extrait. My favorite is Mohur edp. I would be thrilled to win the draw, and thanks! I’m in the US.

  • I have not had a chance to try any perfume from Neela Vermiere. Nancy’s description of Mohur Extrait as creamy, dark but transcendent rose really piques my interest.

I’m in Canada. Thanks for the draw.

  • The notes of this include many many of my favorites, so that is what excites me the most:)

Unfortunately I have not been able to try any Neela Vermiere – but given peoples; views I really want to try them all: sublime quality and thematically Indian – what a dream!

    I live in South Africa;)

  • meganinstmaxime says:

I would love to try this – mainly because I’ve read such amazing reviews of it. Her perfumes are on my list of ‘must tries’ but I haven’t actually sniffed any yet. I know – what sort of perfume lover am I? Thanks for the draw.

  • I have some bits of all of her scents so far, and Mohur Edp is my absolute favorite. It is such a stunner, resinous, woody, spicy Rose that beguiles my nose. I would love to get my hands on some of the extrait!! Neela has a very, very special lineup, every scent exquisite quality. Thank you so much for the giveaway! 🙂

  • So far I love Ashoka but I am sure to love Mohur Extrait as well, I am dying to try it. I am in the EU. Thanks for the draw.

  • I haven’t had a chance to try any Neela Vermeire creations, but am dying to. Mohur sounds wonderful.

  • You won my heart in the beginning of this post. I like Mohur very much and if the extrait can do what it does to you, I think it would be a love for me! I’m in the US.

  • I really find Ashoka to be comforting and have only read good things about Mohur. My mind is drawn to what the interplay between the almond milk accord and the leather would be like. Really keen on trying this one!

Thanks for the draw! I am located in the US.

  • I have tried all the Neela Vermeire Creations, and my favourite ones are Bombay Bling and Mohur. Bombay Bling is an amazing scents which made me smile even when I was very sad… (I must buy this one..) and Mohur is another amazing fragance, excellent quality for a dark rose. I have just sampled it and I can’t imagine how the extrait can be.
Thanks for the draw. I’m in Europe.

  • Monoatomic says:

Mohur is far and away my favorite Neela Vermeire perfume, and one of the few rose fragrances I can wear. I love love to try the extrait. I’m in the US.

  • I love Mohur so I can only imagine how good the extract smells. You’ve made it sound divine! I am in the US and I’ve liked the FB page.

  • Unbelievably , I have not smelled ANY of Neela’s creations yet . I am DYING to try this one , as nothing compares to the high vibration of the rose . And a smooth dark creamy rose defines my idea of a HOLY GRAIL !! Thank you for the generous draw . I am in the US and liked her page .

  • I have sampled all Neela’s fragrances, apart from the Mohur extrait and the sampling of Ashoka was superficial,as it was in a store without the luxury of having a sample for further testing at home.I have fallen for Trayee and Ashoka is a close contender.Trayee is meditation in a bottle an incredible serene and spiritual fragrance,it grounds and calms me.Mohur was too much of a delicate aquarelle for my taste, but I appreciated its creamy and elegant beauty. I would love to try the extrait,as while I was wearing Mohur couldn’t help wishing for its features to be amplified an deepened, and it seems that the pure perfume does exactly that.I am based in Ireland.Thank you very much to all the parts involved in this draw!

  • Ashoka is the fragrance by Neela I enjoy the most so far. Love to try this one though. USA

  • Oh, lovely! Mohur is my favorite by Neela Vermeire. This being deeper and richer only fuels the flames that much more. I would love the opportunity to try this. Thanks so much! I have liked on Facebook and will tweet as well. I’m in the U.S.

  • my favourite Neela Vermeire is Bombay Bling, although I’ve not tried them all yet. I’d love to try Mohur extrait and compare with the edp,
    I’m in the EU, ty

  • fb liked, USA
I adore Trayee! Have only sampled that one so far. Would love to try Mohur Extrait because of the deep dark complexity, the spices, the woods, and the rapturous rose without peer. Thanks for the reviews and draw! CFBs reviews even made me want to try Bombay Bling, and I am not a fruity floral type. Buy they all sound so amazing!

  • I would love a chance to try Mohur Extrait to get a chance to try a truly luxurious perfume! All the notes sound amazing

  • I have a small vial of Mohur which I adore so anything that improves on it I would die to try. Thanks for the draw!

  • Jennifer AM says:

I haven’t tried anything new for months. Would love to get back into smelling new and unique releases. Mohur could be the perfect start. I am in US

  • rivercitylizzy says:

I am captivated by the story of Nur Jahan and the concept of balancing strength, intelligence, beauty, and art that the memory of her life brings to perfumery. But you really had me at “…what may be the greatest rose fragrance of our generation…”

I am in the US and grateful to NVC for the generous draw!

  • Neela Vermeire is master of perfection. Her artistic ideas are fully materialized in each of her perfumes. That’s why I love them all. Many articles on Cafleurebon talks about Neela and I’ve commented many times. So, this time shortly: Neela thinks that Mohur extrait is blossoming of Mohur. I believe her. Mohur is gorgeous rose I adore so Mohur extrait must be blossoming of perfection! Nothing less than that! Thanks, I’m in the EU, Croatia.

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

I would love to try this rose! I love your visuals as well. I now follow on FB and live in the US

  • Nancy’s introduction is incredible – made me weep without knowing the perfume!
I am a sucker for roses, and a creamy rose in a rich and contradictory company of carrot, leather, hawthorn and vanilla is a most intriguing combination!
I am in EU and I am a fan of Neela Vermeire Creations on FB.
Thank you for the generous draw!

  • Ian's Girl says:

I have not yet had the pleasure of trying any of Ms. Vermeire’s fragrance, but I would dearly love to try what could possibly be the greatest rose fragrance of our generation!

I have Liked and Tweeted; thank you so much for a chance to win this!

  • Nancy Knows says:

Thank you all for the very kind comments. Mohur Extrait really is the holy grail of roses.

  • Many thanks to Nancy for writing such a moving article and to Michelyn for the kind wishes on the award for NVC Ashoka (from the Institute for Art and Olfaction).

We are absolutely delighted to read some of your impressions on NVC perfumes.

    Thank you!

  • Nancy Knows says:

Neela, it was truly my pleasure and I also wish to extend my congratulations on the award for Ashoka. My favorite thing about your line is that the quality of ingredients and creativity of both concept and execution really stands out. Each one is a work of art and the love and effort put into them are unmistakable.

  • Monica H. says:

My favorite Neela scent is a toss up between Trayee and Ashoka, but I truly wish that one day i would be able to wear Mohur with the air of elegance that it deserves!

  • Kim Morgan says:

Rose anything makes me ridiculously happy — if this is the royalty of roses, I’m doubly excited. I’d never heard of the empress, but her story sounds like one from fiction, rather than a life actually lived. Amazing, to have a scent inspired by her. US resident.

  • Mohur, because my late, larger than life mom would have loved it. She rocked Opium. I live in Florida.

  • Its very hard to choose a favorite of Neela’s perfumes, they are all special for their own reason. If Mohur extrait is even more exquisite then the EDP it will be a must have 🙂 If I had to choose a favorite now it would be Bombay Bling as it is the happiest perfume I own 🙂

  • Hello!

Mohur Extrait is on sale at jovoyparis.com (France) and parfumaria.com (Netherlands) websites. Both of them ship internationally and I have bought from them before and can say that they are reliable.

I am not affiliated with them.

Luckyscent seems to have run out of Mohur Extrait right now.

    Best regards

    Petra
