New Fragrance Review: LPO Organics Puma by Libby Patterson + SlowCoast Puma Project Draw

slowcoastslogan

The SlowCoast region of California is the fifty mile stretch between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz, California. Its inhabitants are a collection of artisans, farmers, wildlife, botanicals and an intentional lifeometer which always tacks at easy-going. It's no surprise then, that Libby Patterson of Libby Patterson Organics (LPO) can be found collecting and teaching among the varied landscape nestled between sea and forest.

Libby Patterson of LPO Organics

Libby, like most people in the Slow Coast area, is very concerned with keeping her neck of the woods unspoiled, unhurried and in the case of the local Pumas- pure and spacious. Unlike most people, Libby responds to the situation as only artisan perfumers can- by creating a Puma terroir! “A portion of money from each bottle sold goes to The Puma Project which collars the big cats and releases them back to wilderness to watch them & insure their habitat remains pure and they have enough space.”

The scent of the puma's territory is the scent of the SlowCoast itself- it is the haze rising from the heated ground of an early morning run. It is the distant musk of animals in the woods and roaming the farmland. It is the sweetness of berries on a bush and the occasional hit of saline from the sea breeze. It is the amber light of dusk upon a day's worth of aromas rising from the coast of California.

Described as a 'rouge amber', Puma is a close to the skin scent of mountain trails and the seascape. It is a fruit and berry breeze of distant orchards and tender memories of connecting with nature. If this sounds vague, it is because memories can be vague, hazy and intensely sweet. With so much sensory input, one must focus attention on a note trail… this time cypress and woods… this time floral aspects… this time mushrooms and so on to encompass the entirety of what is happening on my skin. It is the outside, brought inside to journey through out the day.

Libby created a total of 32 ounces of Puma- the process taking over a year and including “ghosted echoes” of older designs by using the same bottles, albeit emptied, to provide a “molecular continuity”– which basically translates as modern alchemy. Puma retains the memories of these voyages into her own terroir- the same lands Libby and the Puma roam and call home.

Notes: strawberries, ollaliberries, blackberries, tayberries, local apples, sand, rock, embers from campfires, wild fennel, wormwood, cypress, narcissus, sage, redwood needles, chantrelles, porchini, and seaweed.

  • It’s great that Libby is helping these beautiful cats, they deserve a life well led. Puma sounds amazing, I like the part about the outside being brought inside to journey throughout the day.
I live in the U.S. Thanks for the generous draw!

  • Having gone to school at the University of California, Santa Cruz I am very familiar with the slowcoast and still have great memories of hiking the hills along Highway 1 just north of Santa Cruz.
I had no idea that Pumas lived there but I love thinking about them roaming wild and undisturbed.
Libby’s creation sounds amazing and donating part of her sales is very admirable!
    In the US.
    Thank you!

  • This is a brilliant idea… I’m sharing this post with folks I think would be interested. That the scent evokes the environment of these beautiful cats is a lovely tribute to a fantastic cause.

  • What a great concept for a scent, and what a wonderful thing Libby is doing to bring awareness of the Puma’s environment, and this beautiful feline.
The time Libby has taken to capture the subtle beauty of the area sounds amazing.
I live in the U.S. and would like to be part of this drawing. Thank you for the opportunity. Thank you!! 🙂

  • A beautiful place deserves beautiful creatures like the puma, not just our constant encroachment. Very creative project, and I’d love to smell this.

  • Wow – not only does this perfume sound amazing, but the cause is even better. I applaud Libby for donating a portion of the proceeds to The Puma Project! I’d love to try this ‘rouge amber’. Thanks for the draw, I’m a US reader!

it’s amazing Libby is donating to the Puma project. nothing could be sadder than the fact that this is the first human-driven extinction of species taking place now. all previous extinctions have been due to natural factors. This seems quite a fragrance of contrast. I would have expected it to be earthy before reading but it instead focuses on the green side of the forests such as berries. thanks for the generous draw. I am in the US

  • What an amazing project! It is wonderful that the puma’s cause is being helped by this work of love.

  • I like EVERYTHING about this project! Kudos to Libby!! Thanks for the drawing. In the US. Oh, and thanks for bringing our attention to this! 🙂

  • The ideas behind this and the dedicated care put into this scent’s creation are very touching, and then she goes and tops it off with donations to save big kitties! I’d be honored to sniff some of this truly wild scent.

One of my four cats is named Puma, the black one who spends all his time at the top of the cat tree.

  • What a wonderful project-What a battle it must be to keep these cats safe, it breaks my heart when their habitat is claimed by greedy people wanting to destroy the forests for selfish reasons without regard for the inhabitants of the land. Libby this is wonderful. I would be honored to try your scent. Congratulations. I am in the US

  • Wonderful read and amazing project. Large predators are such an important part of the ecosystem. It’s also wonderful to read about the slowcoast and imagine the notes of the perfume.

  • This has to be one of the most delicious lists of ingredients I’ve ever seen: berries of all description, firewood embers, fir needles. Sounds divine.

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

Libby’s Puma project sounds amazing. So does this fragrance and the interesting process of creation, especially the “ghosted echoes” of older scents.

  • This so appeals to me! I love the idea of Libby’s project being modern alchemy. I’d love the chance to smell the wildness of it. I’m in the US, thanks!

  • I love it when my personal passions intersect – in this case, wildlife conservation and perfumery! I would love to try this scent, and I am in the US. Thank you for the draw!

  • Thanks everyone for the wonderful comments here. I am excited to see so many people are interested in helping the PUMA PROJECT. Thank you to Michelyn and Drew for their review.

This is a very beautiful scent, and people swoon when they smell a molecularization cupped in the palms of their hands, which is how I recommend that the user wear it. It is a neuroscience alchemical quantum brain uptick, that works in 3 seconds to evoke this range of landscape to you. It is a small bottle, but used like this, for moments and memories, conjuring a vacation, it can last. The sillage is a small bandwidth, that returns the wearer to their neutral scent pallette quickly.
