New Fragrance Review: JoAnne Bassett Perfumes Sybarite + A Voyage with Audrey Hepburn Draw

California luxury botanical perfumer, JoAnne Bassett has created an ultimatum; the aroma of a sybarite. The word is defined as, “someone dedicated to luxury and pleasure.”  Somewhat of an anthem for any perfume, JoAnne follows through in her work, using a stock of oils she collected in her global travels in the 80's and 90's. The name Sybarite arrived by coming across the term in Conde Nast magazine, and finding it fitting for herself, JoAnne naturally turned this term into an olfactory concept. While available in many options, JoAnne works with a local glass blower who makes artisan bottles for her collections, in this case a blue bottle the color of churning, bubbling seawater encased inside a book box complete with hand sewn pillow, involving yet another local artisan.

Not that I am overly familiar with such things, but somehow Sybarite is the inside of a Louis Vuitton steamer trunk- bought for Audrey Hepburn and ready to be filled for the voyage across the sea. There is a self-proclaiming sophistication about Sybarite's opening, a body of Bulgarian rosa damascena v. alba purchased in 1999 (white rose otto-  JoAnne refers to this as the “flower of Light”) and Egyptian rose otto hobnob with neroli, orange blossom and osmanthus.  A botanical Hermes scarf with apricot osmanthus jam criss-crossing and encircling orange blossoms. Already, there can be no mistake- this is an aroma of refinement. While mellow and approachable- nothing has been spared Sybarite's gilded presence.

Sybarites find ways to support their indulgences and the perfume supports itself upon, what else? More luxury. Poised upon botanical musk and oud, finally it's revealed where the steam trunk illusion came from and it makes for a not quite leather but born to be spilled into fine leather handbags aroma. Oud is certainly carrying the osmanthus fruit hint and the musk is proof positive of worn clothes tossed casually for the jaunt. This expensive base accord gives Sybarite longevity and projection with a “look but don't touch” perimeter. Cistus has been added to keep anything musk well-groomed and frankincense to remind one of good manners and a lightness which Sybarite carries.

A collection of notes which calls for beauty, Sybarite is the classic refinement which fulfills the homage of it's name. Notes: Bulgarian white rose otto, orange blossom absolute, osmanthus absolute, neroli oil, Damask rose absolute (Egypt), hydro-distilled frankincense, oud-agarwood, natural musk, and cistus.

  • Oh goodness, what appeals to me is that this was made by Joanne Basset, for one thing. And the notes! Oh, rose, frankincense, and oud? I would probably fall head over heels for this one! What is true luxury? Hmmm. . .to me it’s the finest “ingredients,” whether it’s perfume or food, clothing, or household goods. Indulgence? Reveling in it! Thanks for the draw!

  • Sybarite sounds dreamy…. the beautiful bottle helps, but I love rose, I love osmanthus, and I love frankincense though it is so poorly represented in my collection! To me, true luxury and indulgence is something that fully enchants the senses. 😉 I am in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • The orange blossom appeals to me, as well as other notes in the perfume. The bottles are gorgeous! They deserve to be on display. What represents luxury and indulgence to me? A long bubble bath… a relaxing back rub… cashmere and pure silk…
I’m in the US, thanks for the draw!

I am thrilled to see a scent from JoAnn Bassett reviewed. Her line is all about the best of everything. I would so love anything from her collection. The beautiful bottle and package are luxuries anyone would want. I live in the US.

  • This sounds lovely – rose otto, osmanthus, orange blossom… These notes DO convey luxury! I wouldn’t know from personal experience, but when I watch the commercials, I feel like owning a Jaguar would be quite luxurious. 🙂

  • William Morrow says:

I love rose scents, they can transform a man into a sensual being. While uncommon I do love rose scents for me (a man) I find them to require a certain confidence. With regards to luxury and indulgence, I find things that are carefully crafted to be luxurious and refined. The artistry it takes to craft old fashioned perfumes. or fine leather goods, is all but lost this day in age. The careful creation of a good and the strive for perfection is the perfect indulgence.

  • Goodness, thank you JoAnne! And a lovely review. The collection of notes, gathered over the years, really makes this sound special. True luxury and indulgence to me is being able to read perfume reviews like this each and every day. A small luxury that makes a big difference in my life!

  • I love all of the thought and effort that goes into not only the scents but the packaging as well. It certainly looks luxurious! The precious oils selected for the blend definitely convey luxury.

Luxury to me is not based in material goods. Free time, when I can indulge in the pleasures of reading, walking, gardening, traveling and perfumery is what I find luxurious. If caviar happens to accompany any of the above activities, I’d surely enjoy that as well.

  • The blend of the notes reads to promise something quite lovely. I have yet to wear a perfume from this line. Being the one picked for this draw would be a luxurious to the winner I’m sure. 🙂 USA

  • Sybarite seems the kind of fragrances that will real remind one of human skin smell.it seems more of an intimate scent and i wonder how oud and musk may combine to reveal themselves, depending on the body chemistry of the wearer. to me the luxury is quality, free of commercial elements. true luxury lets the product speak and not the marketing campaign. thanks for the wonderful draw. I am in the US

  • I define luxury as having enough of whatever it is that I need. Luxury is not having to worry. The notes of this fragrance sound lovely indeed.

  • I’m happy to try any fragrance with orange blossom in it. To me, luxury is something that I find beautiful or pleasurable, regardless of price or rarity. I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • The bottle itself is so beautiful, the care taken with it must mirror the care taken with creating the fragrances. I’m thankful I can have luxury in perfume, even though I don’t have luxury in day-to-day life.
    I’m in the U.S.

  • Well, nowadays, when the pit between the very wealthy and not so much is growing wider, we are trying to bridge the gap by little luxuries to bring us that much closer to the Dolce Vita, from my experience, JoAnne’s fragrances are just that. And this one even targets the joi de vivres.

I love the association of such a refined fragrance with an icon like Audrey Hepburn; this alone would pique my interest enough to give Sybarite a try–who wouldn’t want to smell as gorgeous as Audrey Hepburn looks?–but add such rare and precious materials (white rose otto, osmanthus, oud!) and I am obsessed!

I’m so drawn to the little luxuries these days: a full night’s sleep, a great glass of wine, an excellent meal, an hour to soak in the tub and grateful beyond measure when I get to indulge in any one of these.

I am in the US and thanks for the draw!

  • Luxury is precision engineering, craftsmanship, and material. A beautiful collision of the three.

    USA here.

  • I like the idea of that bit of oud to ground the lightness of some of the other notes. But really, I just like the name most of all: I aspire to a sybaritic lifestyle; I simply lack the means! In my dreamiest dreams, true luxury would be to have enough money to stay in the finest hotels on a whim and not have to plan and finagle and search out the best possible price to spend the night somewhere other than in my own bed. (Can you guess what I’ve been doing a lot of over the past few days?) I live in the US, and thanks for the draw, all!

  • What a wonderful name and association. I adore Audrey Hepburn. In western world we all live in related luxury. For me is luxury when my kids are healthy , whole night of good sleep and I can greet the new day with my favorite perfume. Thanks for a draw.

  • I love everything about Sybarite, especially the Orange Blossom and Osmanthus! For me, luxury is indulging in all things that please my senses. If I could gaze at that amazing artisan bottle of Sybarite held in one hand while eating homemade mac and cheese and chocolate cake with the other, I would be in the “lap of luxury”!
Thank you for this generous draw! I live in the US.

  • The appeal of Sybarite definitely starts with that beautiful bottle, and continues through the list of wonderful notes. For me, luxury is not having to scrimp and scrounge and worry that there won’t be enough. It’s spending a lovely spring afternoon indoors (albeit by an open window), reading or napping, secure in the knowledge that another beautiful day will come along soon. When I was in college, reading purely for pleasure was a wonderful indulgence. Thank you for the review and the giveaway, and for a moment to ponder real luxury. I’m in the U S.

  • I love the look of the bottle and description of the scent. It sounds so glamorous! In my phase of life, I define luxury as time. Time to think, to read, to spend time with my loved ones, time to just be. Thanks for a draw! I live in the US.

  • Well, I’m not familiar with the inside of a Louis Vuitton steamer trunk either, but I wouldn’t mind being. 😉
True luxury to me is pure enjoyment- whether of the big things, like a trip to Europe, or the small things- like an evening at home without work to do. I’m in the US.

  • Kind of a retro classy classic vibe with this one. Glamour captured in a bottle.
Luxury and indulgence are whatever makes you feel good. Never needs to be expensive. In the USA

  • The perfume sounds beautiful and all the notes are favorites of mine. Luxury to me is having the free time to do what I love (gardening, reading, travel, etc.) without having to worry about income. I don’t get enough of it. I’m in the U.S. thanks.

  • JoAnne only uses the finest ingredients available, and as a confirmed rose ho’ I suspect this is right up my alley! Luxury? A quiet environment and the time to bask in it. I’m in the USA.

  • Jennifer Witt says:

The combination of notes sounds wonderful and very appealing to me – I’d love to try Sybarite. Luxury to me is the time to do whatever I like with whomever I like wherever I like for however long I choose. US. Thanks!

  • I love the images that are conjured up by Joanna, A botanical Hermes scarf , a Louis Vitton trunk..the fine ingredients ..the sheer elegance makes me want to desperately get my hands on this…the bottle is beautiful as well, such attention to detail is admirable. I am in the US and thank you for a very generous draw.

  • The appeal is that it puts Einsof in mind of the fabulous Audrey Hepburn. I’ve never smelled vintage L’Interdit, but I do hope to have the chance to smell Sybarite! For me, a luxury is something that I can’t take for granted, it isn’t always available to me, and when it is, it is very precious. An indulgence is something that you allow yourself for no particular reason. I’m in the US; thanks for the draw.

  • I have tired a sample of it and it really is luxurious! Such a beautiful perfume. I think luxury and indulgence are something you allow yourself to enjoy and that is special to you. I am in the US

  • All those beautiful roses appeal to me! Luxury is the ability to surround yourself with beautiful colors, textures, & scents.
I am in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • JoAnne is very generous! I have sampled, and own a couple, of JB’s perfumes and to be honest, they all smell like luxury to me! She uses fine ingredients which is evident at first sniff. And though sometimes the list of notes sound very similar, I always find that each of her compositions has it’s own unique feel. To me luxury means handmade, or at least not mass produced. It’s something that your senses just recognize as being special. I am in the US and would love to win this one! Thank you JB!

  • That is one of the most beautiful bottles I have ever seen. I am also curious about bulgarian white rose. Luxury is the ability to lose yourself in self indulgence with no care for time, or cost, or what other people think 🙂 I am in the US, thank you.

  • Im intrigued by all the luxurious ingreduents used in this perfume. Frankicense, rose otto. Oh my! Love it. Never tried any of her perfumes before would love to try it. Pure luxury and indulgence means Hermès and Louboutins. Im in the us.

  • Thank you for this chance! These are inspirational fragrances and I would love to try Sybarite, with it’s florals and oud. I think to me, luxury is about attaining a sense of euphoria out of the everyday aspects of life. Luxurious ingredients have the power to fulfill a craving for wonder and elation.

  • Sybarite just in the name sounds like a powerhouse, yet with an heir of head tilting and refinement. I enjoy perfumes with the characteristics that Sybarite has. The opening sounds like light and crystals and with oud carrying it there is that deepness and mystery all the same. this one would be spectacular I think to have and enjoy. the bottles are absolutely stunning as well. True luxury and indulgement to me….hmm. True luxury is really about feeling good about yourself and projecting that outward. there is an aura that comes with that feeling. Indulgement – now that is where one can have a little fun… and we should indulge from time to time. Just keep that balance. I would love to try this one for sure. perhaps a bit of luxury and indulgence! I’m in the US thank you for the generous draw

  • Love the scent notes and love the bottle. Luxury to me is guiltless, carefree indulgence – for me currently time to myself is a luxury, a rare but relished indulgence. I live in the US. Thanks for the amazing draw!

  • i found this on google searching for Audrey Hepburn photos!
I stayed for the beautiful perfume. No one comes close to elegance and refinement than Audrey Hepburn. I love roses and never tried a natural perfume
    I would like to win

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

The gorgeous floral notes of Sybarite appeal to me. This presentation of the fragrance in a hand-blown glass blue bottle packaged inside a gilt-edged “book box” lined with a plush creamy white silk pillow and enveloped in a creamy white silk bag – that is the epitome of luxury and indulgence!

  • Anything with osmanthus intersts me deeply, so…. and luxury to me? Not getting out of bed before noon unless I wanted to 🙂 I live in the US
