New Fragrance Review: Divine Life Perfume Dharma Rose: A Mystical Flower Unfolds + Reader’s Choice Draw

The concept of dharma is prominent in both Buddhism and Hinduism. Coming from the Sanskrit dhri, which means to “uphold” or “sustain”, dharma is about upholding and sustaining the natural, positive order of things in life and the universe. The Dharma Wheel symbolizes the cycle of birth and rebirth. Perfumer Ragna Rostad-Ruffner of Divine Life Perfume created her Dharma Rose fragrance “to assist you as you walk your path, speak your truth and live your dream …all from the deepest desires of your heart.” Dharma Rose is available in both perfume oil and eau de cologne. I tested both, and they are wonderful, with different personalities.

Dharma Rose Perfume Oil goes on bright and almost fruity, like you have just stuck your nose in a particularly fragrant rose.  The balance of rose with the darker, woodier notes like patchouli and sandalwood veers more into the rose territory, and as a result the scent dissipates fairly quickly. It is wonderful while it lasts, and dries down to a soft buzz of rose. I could see this being a lovely scent for meditation or just lying around thinking about life. As part of my testing, I rubbed a few drops onto my face and that was a sublime experience, with the jojoba and fractionated coconut oil carriers providing softness and the aroma providing a calming influence. If you were facing a difficult day, this would be a nice way to start it.

The Dharma Rose Eau de Cologne is a work of art. In this version, although the notes are the same as the oil version, the dispersion created by the alcohol base brings the wonderful patchouli to stand proudly alongside the rose and creates a spiritually uplifting aura. The rose is the same fruity, spectacular rose as you get in the opening of the oil, but it is more jubilant and plays better with its companion notes. Rose is not always easy for me, and a stronger rose accord can often become vinegar on my skin, so this is really exciting. Ragna has chosen perfect notes to complement the rose; there is enough wood and citrus to keep the scent lifted and alive on the skin, and it never goes murky, as many natural fragrances can. Longevity and sillage are very good for an eau de cologne, and I will be adding this to my collection ASAP.

Notes: Bulgarian Rose, Moroccan Rose, Turkish Rose Otto, Patchouli Absolute, Indonesian Vetiver, Mysore Sandalwood, Jasmine Grandiflorim, Geranium Absolute, Spikenard, Red Mandarin, Yuzu, Bois de Rose.

Divine Life products are available online through their Etsy shop. Thanks to the generosity of Ragna of Divine Life Perfume (who provided my samples), we have a reader’s choice draw of either an 8 ml rollerball bottle of Dharma Rose Perfume Oil, or a 15 ml bottle of Dharma Rose Eau de Cologne. She will also include a 1-ounce sample of the Dharma Rose soap that is part of the line.  Let us know your favorite rose fragrances and which one of the Dharma Rose fragrances you would like if you win. Draw ends on August 18, 2012.

We announce the winners only on site and on our Facebook page, so Like Cafleurebon and use our RSS option…or your dream prize will be just spilled perfume.

  • Scented Memories says:

My favorite rose fragrance is Sa Majeste la Rose from Serge Lutens – it’s the only rose fragrance I tried so far that succeds to capture rose’s real smell. I would like to try Dharma Rose Eau de Cologne. Thanks!

  • I also love Sa Majeste la Rose, but also really enjoy Les Parfums de Rosine´s Poussiere de Rose and Une Folie de Rose, and finally, my first Rose love, L´Artisan Perfumeur´s Voleur des Roses. I love Rose!! 🙂 I would love to try the Eau de Cologne but they both sound super. Thanks again for a great draw!

So I think I would like to try the rose roller ball
    Rose soap mmmmm
    Thanks for the draw!

I would like to win Dharma Rose Perfume Oil, thank you for the draw!

  • Anna in Edinburgh says:

swoon, thud! (That’s me, keeling over at the descriptions.)

I’ve never encountered a rose fragrance that I didn’t appreciate, from rosewater upwards!

The Dharma Rose Perfume Oil would be my choice, should I be fortunate enough to be selected in the draw.

Many thanks to all for organising this, and I’m off to put on a rose fragrance to calm myself down!

  • Other than my own? I recently wore Eau d’Italie Paestum Rose in hot summer weather and was loving it. I had only worn it in cold weather before, when it seemed lovely, but thin and brittle. What a difference in summer, when it really blooms! I love most Arabian perfume oils that contain rose.

If I were to win, I would like the 8 ml bottle of perfume oil.

  • Safran Troublant or Ta’if would have to be my favorite roses…but I’d LOVE a chance to try this in EDC.

  • I adore Damascena Perfume by Emma Leah from Fleurage in Australia. I love the sound of Ragna’s Dharma Rose Perfume Oil, love the idea of its brightness and fruity quality, Rose is so magnificent in that way, wears so many cloaks, all overwhelmingly chic and well designed!

  • Shuush I know its bad… but I loved the Sandalwood Rose from Bath and Body works eons ago. I mostly just used the lotion, but it worked so well on my skin I always got complements.

I would love the EDC version of this because with the patch coming out more, I think it would remind me of my long lost love.

  • I sense that you liked better Eau de Cologne, Tama, but your description of quiet serenity of the oil plus the bit about putting it on your face makes me just weak in the knees. Oh, I’d love to try that precious oil.

My favorite rose fragrances are Rouge by Hermes, Nahema, Fleur de The Rose Bulgarie, Un Rose and DSH American Beauty. And, of course, one of the latest obsessions, L’Ombre dans L’Eau which is a totally different rose yet rose nonetheless.

  • My favourite rose fragrances are… Stella Sheer 2008, Annick Goutal’s Ce Soir Ou Jamais and KM Mogador.

Seeming that I like my roses heavy and rather concentrated, I would love to win Dharma Rose in the rollerball oil. Thanks for the lovely draw!

  • I too have difficulties with rose. So far only Rose Oud from Killian has found its way in my collection (of wearable samples sadly). I’d like to try the EdT. Thanks

  • Thank you Tama and CaFleureBon!
I really appreciate your impressions of Dharma Rose as well as the mandala- like images that you shared. The second one had me thinking of quilt patterns…..hhmmmm.

It has been wonderful reading the comments and seeing the many favorite rose perfumes. My list of rose perfumes to sample just keeps on growing!! That is a good thing–who ever heard of too much rose?
    No such thing 😉
It is my all time favorite flower and story.
The variation of natural rose oils fascinates me and keeps me insanely interested in creating perfumes that feature rose. There is no end in sight!
Thank you again dear Tama and Michelyn <3

  • I have sampled Safron Troublant & Voluer des Roses…liked the Saron Troublant better. I would love to try the EDC, as I love to spray fragrance. Thanks.

  • I have sampled Safron Troublant & Voleur des roses and liked them both. I too used to like the BBW Sandlewood rose, esp. the shower gel, but it’s discontinued. I would love to try the EDC, as I love to spray fragrance. Thanks.

  • Ambrozhia Arome on Etsy does this organic rose hydrosol that I just can’t get enough of. You want to tip it over your head a pour. Highly recommend. And my choice would be the Rose Oil, but of course.

  • My favourite rose fragrance is Dark Purple from Montale. I would like to win Dharme Rose Perfume Oil, because I like perfume oils very much.

  • I am a rose fan, so choosing just one is almost impossible. But I do love DSH Beach Roses and Tauer Une Rose Vermeille.

I would prefer to win the Dharma Rose EDC if selected. Thank you!
