Amber Jobin Aether Arts

Amber Jobin of Aether Arts located in Boulder, Colorado is no stranger to cannabis as perfume. She has released A Roll in the Grass and Incense Indica as part of her Burning Man series. She returns to the untapped and until recently illegal aromatic, which offers an incredible array of notes, with Holy Hemp! Cannabis and Tulsi Basil.

The cannabis note is comprised of cannabis essential oil and other notes to create a cannabis accord.   I then carefully choose notes to support and draw out that aspect.  I think that most perfume notes are very complex and can be “pushed and pulled” in a particular direction based in part by what supporting notes are used.

Holy Hemp! focuses on the green aspect of the cannabis plant, partnering with Tusli (holy basil) and the umistakeable note, but not an ingredient-of tomato leaf. “ Since cannabis is so multi-faceted, I usually decide on a particular aspect to focus on like fruity, resinous, green, or animalic.  In Holy Hemp! I wanted to highlight the very green aspects of a fresh bud. I didn’t use a specific tomato note, it is implied by the combination of materials used including the Tulsi.”

tomatoes

The application of Holy Hemp! is to be immediately transported inside a greenhouse- everything fresh with tall stalk potential but not necessarily a marijuana crop. The implied tomato note along with basil elevates the cannabis accord beyond drug references into what it actually IS: a beautiful botanical aroma. If one could erase the scent memories of “do you smell WEED?!!” one would only discern a healthy, powerful herb and fruit aroma which can be identified at any farmer's market or humid, healthy garden. Cananga provides a floral aspect while supporting the fruit notion. What starts as sweet petals ends slight powdered anise among the stems and leafage.  It is almost office friendly- were cannabis not such a hot button. All this rests on balsam gurgan laced with galbanum and curry leaf- the far off wood of a tree trunk lost beneath years of growing vines and various foliage of herbs below.

india holy

Although one cannot escape the homage to India- with their holy basil, curry and even the term 'ganja' is one of reverence and the idea of using cannabis in a perfume may be startling- this is not the perfume of a head shop, a college dorm or the local curry house. It is a bright, clean and delightful fragrance which some may not even recognize as cannabis.  For me, it is the same scent of green which accompanies entering a greenhouse or the plant filled section of a florist… and the delicious scent of tomato vines.

Chosen as CaFleureBon's Rising Star of 2014,  (and a winner of the Art and Olfaction 2014 award for Best  Artisan Perfume for Jon Frum) Amber has started out 2015 with full intention of becoming brightest star of 2015- aided by the green, gregarious and gorgeous Holy Hemp!

Notes: Cannabis accord, Tusli (holy basil), galbanum, curry leaf, cananga and balsam gurgan

I live in Seattle, where it’s not exactly uncommon to encounter the smell of marijuana. While I’m not personally a fan of pot, I find I occasionally like the “green” smell! As a fan of sharp green perfumes, I suppose this isn’t a surprising development.

My favorite part of this review is the following: “For me, it is the same scent of green which accompanies entering a greenhouse or the plant filled section of a florist… and the delicious scent of tomato vines.”

Green + tomato vines = gotta try it! Thanks for the draw!

those who don’t know what does the term ‘ganja’ means, it means bald and is reflected in the picture with monk who is not bald though he has shaven head…somehow when i read about tomato in review, i expected violet to be in the fragrance to achieve tomato-like effect. thanks for the draw. i am in the US

  • I adore Einsofs reviews! What I really enjoyed was the way Hemp was portrayed here, it’s often hot bad pres and he has pulled the magic up
And shared it with us. Who would have thought bright and clean
But yes, it’s perfectly clear. I would love to try this. I’m feeling an extra dimension that the perfumer is giving us and it’s an extraordinary gift. I am in NZ

  • What I find appealing INEinsof’s review is the fact that this scent recalls the scent of “green which accompanies entering a greenhouse or the plant filled section of a florist… and the delicious scent of tomato vines” now this I have to experience 🙂
    I am in EU.

  • My favorite part of Einsof’s review is “What starts as sweet petals ends slight powdered anise among the stems and leafage. It is almost office friendly- were cannabis not such a hot button” Amber Jobin does some anazing work! I’m in the USA.

  • Thank you Fazal for defining ‘ganja’ and why it’s considered a sacred term. 🙂

Good luck everyone on the draw- this is such a beautiful GREEN scent!!

I found Einsof’s description of HolyHemp! as “green, gregarious and gorgeous” most appealing. I live in the US.

  • “If one could erase the scent memories of “do you smell WEED?!!” one would only discern a healthy, powerful herb and fruit aroma which can be identified at any farmer’s market or humid, healthy garden” Love this description of Einsof. I live in the Netherlands.

  • I like it that there are a lot more aspects of hemp smell than just the smoke of a pot cigar. Eager to test it, indeed. I love the idea of a fresh wet garden, especially one infused with the scent of tomato stems and leaves! I am a plant biotechnologist, and the scent of cultivated plants is no strange to me. It speaks of combining work with pleasure, for my own experience.
I am in Bulgaria (EU), and I thank you for the opportunity to test American natural perfumery, that is not available around here!

  • I am curious and attracted to the description of clean and green, as hemp is not a fragrance I would normally like. To me it’s musty and heavy. so I’d love to see this version. I am in the US. Thank you

  • I like the pictures that were chosen, especially when talking about India and I would like to see if the scent really has an Indian vibe…. And one would say that Holy Hemp! would be anything but “office friendly” …but who knows…. I am in the EU, thanks for the draw.
