New Fragrance Review: Adam Levine for Men & for Women -Niche Finds A New Home + Reader’s Choice Draw

Let me lay out a scenario that would lead to two of the best mainstream fragrances in years and see if you could predict the success.

First take a celebrity who two years ago tweeted the following:

adam levine tweet

Actual tweet from March 5, 2011

Second decide to create two gender-specific versions for $35/oz

Third take one of the most talented perfumers on the planet and expect him to turn all of this into something that isn’t akin to a perfumed train wreck.

I knew all of the above when I received a bottle of each of the new Adam Levine fragrances for Men and for Women. I expected to spray them on and consign them to the large graveyard of other wan uninspiring celebrity fragrances; because I agree with Mr. Levine’s tweet. Instead what met my nose was a continuation of what perfumer Yann Vasnier has been doing for the last few years. M. Vasnier has slowly been letting a niche aesthetic find its way into his mainstream releases. He has been the most persistent in attempting this and in these two fragrances I think we’ve come to the place where we’re about to find out if the great majority of fragrance shoppers are ready to take a walk on the niche side.

Adam Levine for Men is at an Eau de Toilette strength and M. Vasnier creates an edgy citrus cologne that is so modern but still easily approachable. The citrus is green followed by a bit of herbal spice down to a traditional ambery woody finish. That sounds like a lot of other fragrances, here is what is different. M. Vasnier uses mandarin and grapefruit as the citrus. It is much more grapefruit than orange and it is a full grapefruit which has its slightly sulfurous nature more pronounced. In a typical mainstream fragrance that sulfur quality would be tamped down or removed. In M. Vasnier’s hands he takes it and uses it as a foundation to add lemongrass, ginger, and sage. The slightly raw sulfurous edge is turned into an advantage as it makes the lemongrass more delineated, it makes the sage smokier, and it turns the ginger more kinetic. It is right here in the heart of Adam Levine for Men where M. Vasnier shows his belief that a consumer will embrace something different. For those of us who have left the department store counter behind this feels like any of the better niche citrus focused fragrances you can name.  The base is the only thing traditional on display as amber, sandalwood, and cedar close this out. It is those citrus notes, which are allowed to display all of their facets, matched with a well-chosen array of notes in the heart that make this stunning. Adam Levine for Men is an EDT fragrance and thus has below average longevity and average sillage.

Adam Levine for Women is even more surprising as this is going to be so different than the avalanche of fruity florals it will be standing next to. For those of us who have discovered niche perfume a spicy woody floral is something we are familiar with usually for something north of $100 a bottle. M. Vasnier has become a perfumer version of Rumplestiltskin as he has woven figurative straw into pure gold. The niche genetics are on display right from the opening as a spicy mélange of saffron, cardamom, and pepper are paired with the astringent floral quality of marigold. The heart of jasmine and rose is the place where Adam Levine for Women plays it safe although the jasmine has a bit more indole than usual for a mainstream release and the rose is a bit more full and spicy. They pick up many of the facets of the top notes and then it leads to the sweetly resinous finish of vanilla and benzoin. If I handed you this fragrance blind and told you it came from almost any niche house out there I think I could convince you of that. This is just a masterful feat of perfumery by M. Vasnier. Adam Levine for Women is Eau de Parfum and it has above average longevity and average sillage.

I’m still waiting for Ashton Kutcher to come through my door to tell me I’ve been “Punk’d” because even after all the time I’ve had with these two perfumes I can’t believe they are meant to be sold at department stores for $35 a 1oz. bottle. I have handed out my highest praise for perfumers who work with the finest of materials with unfettered freedom. What M. Vasnier has created here with financial and creative restraints has to be recognized as an equivalent, if not greater, feat of legerdemain.

Well, I had NO intention of trying either of these, that is until I just read your review Mark. Thanks. If I won, I would prefer the Mens.

  • So shocked you like these! Even more shocked that you make me want to try the women’s.
Of course I would never tell anyone what I was wearing.

  • LOL! I expected this would be dissed and laughed at. But you have made it sound like a must-try! Will need to check it out at the departmental store!

  • Yay, I hope these are really popular. Marigold in a mainstream scent? Yes, please. I choose the women’s.

  • Wow! What an encouragement for mainstream scents! Would love to try the women’s version. Thanks for the draw!

  • Yay for Yann Vasnier! Both actually sound good. I’d choose to try the women’s version first, though.

  • A women’s fragrance that isn’t a fruity floral? Yes, please!

I had no idea M. Vasnier looks a bit like Bradley Cooper, double yum.

  • I heard lots of good things about these fragrances but your review makes them sound even better. I would love to win AL for Women.

    Thank you!

  • Wow! I’m impressed and would love to win the women’s scent. Regardless, I will certainly check both of these out.

  • I, too, had no intention of trying these. You have made these fragrances interesting, especially at this price. Thank you. I’d like to try the women’s version.

  • Adam Levine is divine!! Yann Vasnier is a genius and 35$ is a steal !!! I do hope I win the woman’s one! Thank you!!

  • I popped into Macy’s the other day to try these. The bottles themselves were better than I expected. The men’s fragrance was a lovely tribute to grapefruit. A fabulous grapefruit, mind you, but just grapefruit. I think it might layer well with something else. I’d be interested to hear if anyone discovers a great combination.
The notes for the women’s got my hopes up, but it was extremely light handed, good for those who like their perfumes close to the skin. On me it was faint and unremarkable and too powdery for my taste, but this may work well for those who want an unobtrusive summer scent.
I do think these were both better than the usual department store fare, but clearly I missed what Mark and others have found so interesting. Ho hum.

  • Wow honestly it is a tough call between the men’s and women’s as I am a lover of citrus and florals, my two favorite genres.

I will go for the women’s I guess. And hey if I fall in love with the men’s, it’s only $35!

    Thanks for the draw.

  • Too bad I was at Macy’s before reading this review. Had I known, I’d have given Adam a scentual spin ’round the store. Guess I’ll need to head back! My preference would be MEN’S.

  • just breathe says:

Would love to win the men’s version for my brother (and I like citrus so hopefully he would share with me 🙂 !!)
    thanks for the draw!

  • Surprisingly, i think I’d like to try the women’s! I live in the U.S. and thank you kindly for the draw!

  • I love all things Adam Levine and I’m dying to try his fragrance for women! If his fragrance is anything like his music, it’s sure to be a hit and thanks for the draw! 🙂

  • labelleetlabete says:

Wow! I wouldn’t have tried either if it weren’t for this review. If I were fortunate enough to win I would try the women’s scent.

  • Wonder what made Adam Levine change his mind about celebrity scents? Money? I do like him though! I would love to try the woman’s scent. Thanks for the draw!

  • just breathe says:

I adore Adam’s voice and after this review I am curious about the fragrances he has put his name to..I love grapefruit so I think I would go for the Mens.
    thank you for this draw!

  • Great reviews!

Adam Levine for Men sounds superb. Lemongrass is one of my favorite notes ever, along with the other heart notes.

It’s so nice that a celebrity actually created something worth wearing and owning for a modest price. Obviously, there is more to both Mr Levine (and his scent) than meets the eye! 😉

Thanks for the chance to win!!!

  • I’m so not fan of celebuscents … but curious now after reading your review.

I would prefer the women’s version please. Thank you for the draw.

  • Adam Levine for men sounds really good after reading your review. Don’t care about celeb Parfums but this one is making me curious to try.

    Thanks

  • Interesting. I’ve tried a few other celebrity fragrances, would love to try Adam levines male fragrance.

  • I have to admit that I’m completely curious about the women’s fragrance now. Despite wanting to punch Adam Levine in the face most of the time – stupid earworms.

  • gypsyqueenmother says:

I don’t know him or his music but I never let whose name is on the label influence my perfume purchases…I follow my NOSE! Most times the “stars” have no hand in the actual scent manufacture anyway…

AND if it is good enough for Mark to rave about it AND it is super affordable-sign me up for the ADAM LEVINE for WOMEN draw, please!

    Thanks…it’s NICE to SHARE!

  • I have been wanting to smell this since I first heard about it and, after reading the review, want it even more!! It is not in my Macy’s yet :(Glad it is priced reasonably, too!! Thanks!!

  • I’m very curious to try the women version of the perfume. Thanks for the review and the opportunity!
