Orlov Paris Perfumes inspired by famous Diamonds

I first became aware of Orlov Paris through Karen Dubin, our own Sr Contributor Hernando Courtright’s wrap-up of Sniffapalooza Spring Fling 2015 and the recent Cosmoprof trade show’s Discover Scent exhibition. The story behind the brand is as multifaceted as its theme…diamonds.  Creative Director and gemologist Ruth Sery and her husband Thomas Méaulle combined two of their passions, diamonds and perfume, to create Orlov Paris, named after the mythical diamond set atop the Imperial scepter of Russia.

Dominique Ropion2

Dominque Ropion Master Perfumer (digitalized)

No expense was spared and perfumer Dominique Ropion,  one of the world’s greatest perfumers was engaged to create each fragrance. Ruth Sery sought out M. Ropion after falling in love with Frederic Malle Carnal Flower.  And like any great love story, there was a marriage proposal, diamonds and destiny; her future husband Thomas was wearing Vetiver Extraordinaire signed by M. Ropion when they met. Each Orlov Paris fragrance is named after a legendary stone. Whether they were given as tokens of love, worn as insignia of power or acquired to satisfy an obsession, these jewels have always been objects of desire throughout their often mysterious history.

Orlov Parfum

“The glamour of tuberose. The brightness of orange blossom. The sensuousness of jasmine sambac… In Orlov, the master perfumer Dominique Ropion has picked the most radiant facets of these rich floral absolutes to compose a single, perfect blossom: the quintessential white flower. As dazzling as its namesake, the legendary diamond that crowns the Imperial scepter of Russia, this flawless floral gem is set in cool-as-platinum iris, on a backdrop of dark, velvet-soft leather…”

Orlov Sea of Light

Sea of Light is a variation on the theme of eau de Cologne and draws its inspiration from the mythical, 132-carat Daria-i-Noor, which means “sea of light” in Persian. “Luminous grapefruit shines on a bright citrus accord, enhanced with a trio of festive fruity notes: raspy blackcurrant, velvety peach and bracing buchu, a leaf with mint and rhubarb facets. Dewy lily-of-the-valley and a salty splash of sea spray conjure cool, glinting waves, fringed with ethereal foam of white musks…”

 1 orlov cross of asia

Cross of Asia

Cross of Asia, was inspired by the spectacular champagne-colored stone, Cross of Asia is that rarest of gems: a fragrance which sheds new light on a classic note, that was the star of one of Ruth’s favorite fragrances… Amarige, also one of Dominique Ropion ‘s perfumes. M. Ropion “has studied ylangylang closely in order to bring out each of its facets. Surprising hints of green apple and crystalline pear. Spices, enhanced by cool coriander and essence of cypress. A glowing rose note and heady white floral effects, set off by orange blossom, tuberose and jasmine absolutes. Finally, a lash of leather reveals the yellow bloom’s secretly animal nature…”

1 star of the season orlov and diamond

Star of the Season

“In French, “gold digger” translates as croqueuse de diamant, “diamond cruncher”. In a sly play on the expression, Star of the Season turns the most expensive diamond ever sold at an auction into a 100-carat indulgence… In this exquisitely elegant confection, two of the most precious ingredients in perfumery reveal their secret sweet tooth. Rare Indian sandalwood is sprinkled with cinnamon, cumin and clove, drizzled with caramel and infused with vanilla. Iris concrete unveils dark chocolate facets, bolstered with velvet-smooth patchouli and amber. Rich Turkish rose absolute adds berry and mulled-fruit facets”.

Flame of Gold

Flame of Gold was named from a canary-yellow diamond owned by flame-haired movie star Greer Garson. Musk, the most burningly sensuous note in perfumery, conjures the gem’s tawny glow. Sparked off by powerfully radiant amber notes, this Flame of Gold is fueled by the richest wood essences: sweetly smoky guaiac, cocoa-dark patchouli, clean, bracing Virginia cedar and smooth sandalwood…”

  • Hmm. I think your favorite is Cross of Asia. I’m interested most in Star of the Season, but I think Sea of Light sounds compelling, too. They all do, if I’m honest! 🙂

US resident — still loving the idea of using priceless gems and minerals as a foundation for a line of perfumes; what a wonderful inspiration for fragrance!

  • I too think your favorite is Cross of Asia. I don’t know if it was your descriptive words or what, but it felt like that one you favored. I think Flame of Gold sounds glorious, the dark patchouli, warm winter vibe. I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • Thanks for this wonderful review and draw.
I would love to try Star of the Season because it sounds so delicious. I think your favorite is Flame of Gold.
    USA

  • Definitely Flame of Gold because I love woody-smoky scents. I’m going to take a wild guess and say your favorite is Star of the Season. I’m in USA.

  • Well…for you I’d go with Star Of Asia, floral, mysterious, and a little bit dangerous! For me it would have to be Orlov, b/c I’m such a white floral ho’. I’m in the USA

  • These all sound gorgeous! Star of the Season would be my choice, as orris is bar none my favorite note, and the notes its blended with here sounds amazing. Thank you for the draw and the review! Michelyn, I guess that your favorite is Flame of Gold. I’m in the USA. Thank you!!

  • Ropion gives me confidence these are quality fragrances…I may be most intriqued by and my choice for this draw is also Flame of Gold because it is smoky woody fragrance which also have one of my favorite notes sandalwood. i believe Michelyn’s favorite is Star of the Season due to its gourmandy floral elements. Star of the Season also seems the richest and most feminine in the collection. thanks for the draw. I am in the US

  • The “”lash of leather” accenting all those floral notes makes Cross of Asia my choice and yours too I’m guessing. A radiant and multi-faceted gem.
    I’m in the US.

  • I would like the Star of the Season please. Because of the rare Indian Sandalwood. Your favorite is the Flame of Gold. 🙂 US

  • What a fabulous collection! Flame of Gold is my choice for several reasons: first and foremost the notes named are my very favorites, especially “burningly sensuous musk”, yummy. And I am fond of canary diamonds and even fonder of Greer Garson; Random Harvest is one of my favorite classic films. And Michelyn, I’m guessing your favorite is the Cross of Asia, knowing your fondness for ylang. Thanks so much for the incredible opportunity! I’m in the US.

  • Very hard to pick just one. All of these sound great and some sound simply amazing!! I pick the Star of the Season for myself, as I adore iris concrete.I think that one might be your pick, Michelyn, but I am going to guessing that the Star of Asia is because of the floral elements. I’m probably wrong, as I always am. In the US! Cheers & thank you.

  • I would guess Star of the Season to be your favorite. For me, Flame of Gold is the one calling (I’ll take the diamond too, please 😉 )
I’m in the U.S. Thank you for the draw!

  • For myself, I’d choose Star of the Season, for its sandalwood-and-iris combination.

I think Flame of Gold might be your favorite, because of its sensuous nature…

I’m in the US; thanks for the draw!

  • Holy smokes – this is difficult. Orlov and Sea of Light both sound ridiculously amazing. I tend to love my white florals though, so Orlov wins. I’d absolutely love to try this, it sounds divine. Thanks for the draw, I’m in the uS!

  • I think your favorite is Flame of Gold. The one that appeals to me is Star of the Season……..the spices. I’m sure they are all very nice. Thanks for the drawing. I live in WA.

  • Hard to choose, but I would have to select Star of the Season. The description of the sandalwood sweetened with caramel is very enticing. Also, it references the most expensive diamond sold at auction, so I know this is one my beloved Aunt would have picked, given her love of diamonds.

Great draw! I live in the U.S.

  • They all sound so wonderful, and M. Ropion is one of my favorite perfumers. Almost all of them appeal to me, but if I have to pick just one, it’s Orlov. I am capitvated by tuberose, jasmine, and leather notes so it sounds perfect. As for M.C.’s favorite, I’m going to guess Flame of Gold. I’m in the USA.

  • I would choose Orlov because I am bonafide tuberose and orange blossom fan. They all sound intriguing though! I am in the U.S. Thanks for the draw.

  • Choices 😉 This house and the back story are facinating. Not to mention the Perfumer, one of my favorites as well. Although the choice would tear at me to choose just 1, I would have to choose Orlov, might be my love of Sambac 😉 I would guess that the Orlov Parfum would be your choice as well. I am a registered reader in the US.

  • The diamond I choose is, Sea of Light. I can’t resist the marine and salty accord. I also believe it’s Michelyn’s choice. U.S.A.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Flame of Gold and Cross of Asia look wonderful to me! Flame of Gold in particular would be my choice; I’d choose it for Michelyn’s choice as well. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US

  • Star of the Season (iris, sandalwood and amber – yes, please!) would be my choice and I’m going with Flame of Gold for yours. I’m a registered reader in the US. I also fell in love with Carnal Flower, so the description of these is exciting!

  • oh I love Dominique Ropion Carnal Flower so much
What an elegant line and I love that RUTH and Thomas met wearing one of his perfumes.
Diamonds are this girl’s friend I am so impressed that a quality diamond is on the elixer. I shall save for Orlov elixir than for tuberose and Jasmine with leather. Hmmm for Ms Camen Star of the season sounds lovely

  • I love Dominique Ropion, and the concept behind and names of the perfumes, and the bottle in that last photo. (An Elixir Edition, I assume? If only I were a “diamond cruncher.”) Cross of Asia sounds divine, but I think my choice would be Star of the Season, which is also my pick for your favorite. Perfume is nothing if not surprising, though.I am in the US.

  • I’m going to pick Orlov because it must be beautiful if D Ropion created it. For you I will pick Star of Season. Something about rare Indian sandalwood. Thank you USA here

  • These descriptions are very appealing to me! I would choose star of the season, because it sounds perfect for the winter holidays. I am going to guess that cross of Asia is your favorite! I’m in the US, thanks for the draw!

  • Le Parfum says:

Orlov Paris is one of the most luxurious brand I ever came across. The fragrances is so wonderful and well blended. The concept is very luxurious too. They are high end frangrance and expensive but it’s worth every penny invested. If you wanna quality and want to be excluvise you must invest some more money. The bottle and the box are so minimalistic and lovely. Star of the Season is the real star of the brand it’s a beautiful composition slight gourmand, creamy and spice that turns it very sexy and unisex too. Flame of Gold is another great fragrance very bold and remarkable, in my opinion is the most masculine. Sea of Light is very oceanic and made for spring and summer it’s very bright and it turns summer more elegant. Cross of Asia is a sweet floral very femine but very elegant.Orlov is the most feminine offer and women who loves white flowers will love it.
Worth check it out this house.
