My Kandinsky

OK, there’s no roadmap for this one.

In the words of Monty Python’s John Cleese…  “And now for something…completely different”

Yes, I’m British, and yes, I can do the accent.

Primordial Chaos is where I’m at and Primordial Goo is what I have produced.

Searching frantically for a sample vial of basil oil for a special new perfume formula I dumped out a dish of essential oil vials on my table…

My jazz man remarked that the pile “smelled pretty good” this chaos of vials and smells gave of quite the …sillage..hm.mmm really? I said absentmindedly then…Oooooh! As a naughty thought crossed my mind…

Yes, you guessed it. Dump the contents of every vial into a bottle. Hehe.

Here’s what went into the bottle, in somewhat the same proportions as all of the vials are 1/32 oz, although admittedly not all were full and some were multiples of the same thing…

In no particular order…

Copaiba balsam, carrot seed, vanilla absolute, cardamom CO2, Jasmine extract organic, lime distilled, lavender absolute, lavender concrete,Clementine CO2, rose absolute Egypt, tuberose extract organic, bees wax absolute, amber oil fossilized, black currant bud absolute, carnation extract organic, lime expressed, vanilla extract organic, ruby red grapefruit, carnation absolute, ravensara, orange sweet organic, natural citral, tuberose absolute, orange bitter green, orris root CO2, something I couldn’t read (smudged label), rose de mai, lavender kashmir, lavender Bulgaria, petitgrain bigarade, geranium absolute, myrrh CO2, coriander seed organic, juniper berry CO2, petitgrain sur fleurs, rose maroc absolute, elemi, bergamot, orange wild, orange blossom absolute, oakmoss brown, patchouli, mimosa concrete, fir balsam organic, cognac green, ylang ylang extra organic, natural geraniol, jasmine sambac absolute, neroli, clary sage, tagetes, petitgrain lemon, lemongrass organic, cypress leaf organic, silver fir, cocoa absolute, amyris, sweet fennel, cepes absolute, cognac white, palmarosa, ambreine, celery seed, vanilla CO2, thyme linalool, rose otto, sandalwood vanuatu, fir balsam absolute, cassie absolute, ginger lily, labdanum, sandalwood india, neroli extra, vetiver organic, peppermint, mimosa absolute, honeysuckle absolute, liquidambar (styrax).

Pinky swear that’s everything I had. Well…not quite. I couldn’t bring myself to ruin what was shaping up to be something quite…attractive in a weird kind of way. I left out a vial of road tar smelling Choya loban and a vial of super potent blue eucalyptus.

And what emerged from the primordial goo? Three full ounces of energetic aromatic intensity…

We are primordial beings after all. Looking down on us from space what do we see? Plasma, swirls of life. Our cells, our smells, one big blob called planet earth. A blue green mystery from which we emerge as cellular dots of individual light only to dissolve back into the goo from whence we came.

Wassily Kandinsky saw something in this chaos. Experiencing, painting, dancing the paint onto the canvas in swirling flowing motion, in staccato blocks, in utter chaos, in light and lyrical dots and spots, in stillpoints like stars.

This Fume is like that. A Kandinsky painting. It’s rather lovely I think. The myrrh dries down a little strong but the floral notes brighten and the vanilla and amber soften in their way. A famous perfumer has said, “you can’t simply pour a bunch of essences into a bottle and call it a perfume” I agree. It’s not that. It is an interesting aroma made in the spirit of fun and chaos.

All commenters on this post will be entered to win 1/3 oz of “My Kandinsky” 3 winners will be randomly selected. The draw will take place on Thursday August 26 at 11:59PM EST.

I rather like it. I think you will too.

  • I can’t imagine the smell of this Kandinsky, but it sounds great with all that notes.
I’m always willing to try new aromas 🙂

  • Monica…I am totally intrigued by this.  Your essential oil list….it's extent is wowing me – lol!  Grinning as I'm writing this, because I would love to sniff your 'naughty' composition.  You ROCK!!

Thanks again for such a fun and exciting article. Today  was such a chaotic day for me at work your article was just what I needed a dynamic article about color and fragrance and how the two intertwine. Experimentation at it's best.

  • Oh it sounds like you had such a GOOD time making this… 🙂  It sounds like something that would happen at our house, what with my jazz trained husband…I might just dump it all in too

Sorry I missed the draw, however, I'm very glad I got to read about the process of creation!  That is one of my most favorite parts.  Bringing something into existance that didn't before I thought of it, and making it tangible instead of whispy illusive energy.
