My Favorite Gingerbread Fragrances + Secret Scent-a-Claus Draw

The Holiday season is probably the best season for those of us who lead with our nose. There is no other time of the year when scent seems to play such a big part. If you need to prove my point ask anyone, perfumista or not, you know to describe the Holiday season. I guarantee a very high percentage will come back with something scent related. The smell of the Christmas tree, nutmeg on egg nog, or the yule log burning in the fireplace; are just a few of the possible responses. My favorite sensorial aspect of the holidays is no different as my touchstone scent is gingerbread. When it comes to December I’m gingerbread 24/7 from my Gingerbread Latte from Starbucks to five fabulous gingerbread fragrances I wear throughout the month.

I thought I’d build a fragrant Gingerbread House of my favorite five fragrances, four walls and a roof.

One of the walls is CB I Hate Perfume Gingerbread. Christopher Brosius is at his best when replicating a particular smell; be it a library or a beach when CB is on his game he creates realistic magic in a fragrance. Gingerbread is one of his most magical as throughout the development it is like you are standing in front of the mixing bowl tossing in the best ingredients. Starts with ginger root, damp and pungent, add some nutmeg and cinnamon followed by a little vanilla for sweetness and all of a sudden the four notes combine and you’re a walking Gingerbread Man. Every time I wear this I marvel at this seeming olfactive sleight of hand. Not only is it one of my favorite gingerbread fragrances it is just one of my favorite fragrances.

‘Rude Food’ by Sara Jane Szikora

The next two walls come from a small online perfumery Possets founded by Fabienne Christenson. If you are a fan of intense gourmand fragrances Ms. Christenson has a beautiful repertoire of fragrances which can scratch almost any foodie fragrant itch you have. She also has a wicked sense of humor which peeks out from time to time in the name of her perfumes. Both of the gingerbread fragrances from Possets are examples of this. Their names are The Gingerbread Whorehouse and The Gingerbread Crackhouse.  The Gingerbread Whorehouse is more of a lush sensual experience and is rich full ginger plus a full house of spices. This is the gingerbread red light district, for sure. The Gingerbread Crackhouse is a more focused rush of a fragrance. In other fragrances you read about ginger being energizing in The Gingerbread Crackhouse you understand what that means. It opens on a rush of clean ginger and it is supported by an amazing dry cocoa powder note. It is simple in structure but surprisingly intense in experience.

The fourth wall is Serge Lutens Five O’Clock au Gingembre. When this first appeared I was underwhelmed by it and if you look at the three fragrances above, all of which explode with ginger; I was not ready for Christopher Sheldrake’s more subtle study, initially. Five O’Clock au Gingembre is an English Holiday milieu of afternoon tea and gingerbread. Bergamot and black tea create a pot of Earl Grey steeping next to a tray of sweetly frosted gingerbread right out of the oven next to a pot of honey to sweeten the tea.  If you just like gingerbread and don’t crave it, like me, this is the gingerbread fragrance for you. It is a tender evocation of a genteel afternoon tea underneath the holly roping in the drawing room.

The roof of my fragrant gingerbread house comes from Pierre Guillaume and his Parfumerie Generale line of perfumes. Un Crime Exotique is one of the best examples of M Guillaume’s gourmand aesthetic. His best examples are when he takes a well-known note like gingerbread and by an uncanny choice of notes to surround it creates a different appreciation of that accord. Like 5 O’Clock au Gingembre he uses a tea to contrast his gingerbread but this is mate and it adds an exotic counterpoint to the common gingerbread; cinnamon and anise also add piquancy to the opening moments. The heart, where he adds osmanthus, is where Un Crime Exotique truly creates a different gingerbread recipe. The apricot leathery quality of osmanthus splits the nucleus of the gingerbread as the apricot facets combine with the ginger and the leather takes on the spices in a maelstrom of sensory pleasure. Vanilla and sandalwood add a calming grounding effect in the base notes. Un Crime Exotique is the gingerbread of a mad scientist which comes alive on my skin.

I hope my suggestions will add a bit of gingerbread to your Holiday celebrations, all five instantly put me in a holiday mood when I wear them.

Disclosure: I own bottles of all five of the fragrances mentioned.

  • My favorite holiday scent is the smell of midnight mass, it reminds me so much of childhood. The fragrance that smells exactly like midnight mass is Comme des Garcons Incense Avignon. I always wear this during Christmas Eve and Midnight Mass.

  • OMG amazing draw for sure……normally my favorite fragrance to wear at Christmas is Vintage YSL Opium Extrait it has Christmas Pasts memories for me. This year i will be wearing Olfactive Studio Autoportrait….i fell in love with this fragrance after sampling it.

  • Also my favorite holiday scent is the scent of a freshly cut Christmas Tree warming up and releasing the most beautiful green woody pine scent in the house.

  • donna scott kopenhaver says:

I wear LAVANILA. that has a vanilla scent that when over heated really does “explode”in yumminess. My husband loves it . I do plan on wearing this on Christmas weekend, since I plan on being real close with my husband. :)…

  • My favorite Holiday scent is the outdoor smell of pine. I think tomorrow I will wear Aroma M’s Rouge, so spicy and cinnamony.

What a fabulous draw! Happy holidays to all.

  • My favorite holiday scent is the smell of pumpkin pie straight from the oven and also my mother’s signature scent of Opium. My mother has been wearing Opium for over 25 yrs. now and that scent epitomizes the scent of Christmas to my nose. Spicy and warm and evokes the colors of red and gold.

As for what I will be wearing scent wise for Christmas Day, I will be smelling divine in Creed Tubereuse Indiana from the vintage flacon.

    Merry Christmas!

    ~Dawn

  • I love to wear SL Arabie and YR Fleur du Noel for the holidays.
Nice selection of scents and great draw!!

  • I adore the scent of a Christmas tree or wreath. The boughs of fir trees, the aroma of pine needles and resiny sap, oh, how wonderful!

For Christmas Eve I wore Sahlini Femininde. A lovely spicy concoction! I am not sure what I will wear tomorrow, but it might be Penhaligon’s Malabah.

Coincidentally, one of my Christmas presents tonight was Demeter Fresh Ginger!

  • My favourite smell for the Christmas is the smell of the Christmas Tree.
I really do not know what I will be wearing. Maybe I will wear nothing because I do not want to ruin the perfect smell of the Christmas Tree.
    Thanks for the giveaway.

  • Mark, we should call you The Gingerbread Man! I love lots of holiday smells, but my favorite might be the scent of freshly grated nutmeg. I’m still looking for the perfect nutmeg fragrance (any ideas for me?), but my husband’s CSP L’Eau de Gouverneur and L’Occitane Vetyver both have a nice dose of it!

  • I love to death the smell of vanilla on holidays. Therefore, my choice for the Christmas Day is Love by Kilian. Thank you for the give-away.

  • Wow. This made me hungry and want to smell all of the above delights. I don’t think I’ve even sniffed the Lutens and that’s the one for the draw! Lovely!
I’m living for foresty scents right now and I love Fir Ever Young by Velvet and Sweet Pea or Fir by Aftelier or Atlantic by Strange Invisible Perfumes.

I will have to get back to you with which one wins for wearing tomorrow.

    Thanks!

  • My Christmas smell of Orthodox incense, big burning candles and gorgeous precious woods blended with jasmine and vanilla – it’s Juozas Statkevicius (Josef Statkus) EDP.. It’s so soft, dark, mysterious and sensual while at the same time remaining incredibly chic.. I’m wearing it now and it sure will stay with me during all holiday season except for one evening when I’ll be drowning in Frederic Malle’s Iris Poudre.

    Merry Christmas everyone!

  • My favorite Christmas scent is the scent of late night outdoor after snowing it’s a crisp, a little incense-y smell-I remember it from my childhood, walking home after family celebration
What I love to wear at this time of year is S. Lutens Arabie or Ambre Sultan
thanks for the draw and Merry Christmas to all of you

  • My favorite smell of Christmas is cinnamon and orange here in greece they are the most common ingredients for all Christmas sweets and all the houses smell of them since the beginning of December. i recently bought Jo malone’s Nutmeg and ginger and will wear it in the holidays!! Merry christmas everyone!!!

  • My favorite holiday scent is the smell of amber: sweet, aromatic, intense amber. Today my choice is Ambre Sultan by Lutens, I love it.
    Merry Christmas !

  • My favorite holiday smell is the smell of the tree itself, and I don’t wear it on myself, but wear something to compliment it. If I was looking for a piney Christmas tree scent, I would probably go with Lalique Encre Noire. But I usually go a different route: choose a fragrance that will go well with the tree smell. So far every year I’ve been wearing fragrances, I wore something different on Christmas Eve (my Christmas scarf with a drop of Nuit de Noel vintage extrait comes to mind), and on Christmas day I wore whatever I found under the tree!

Last night I wore ELdO Noel au Balcon and this year I will wear Nahema as this was my husband’s request. I am not sure what will I do when I open a fragrant package! Wait till tomorrow, I guess, impatiently, while still doing justice to Nahema which is gorgeous and lasts!

I know and like two fragrances of described by you, Mark, your fourth wall (wow, thanks for impressive draw and a set of impressive reviews!) and your roof which is over the top indeed and I love it for that!

  • My favorite Christmas scents are family breakfast cooking on the stove Christmas morning, the scent of pies and cakes baking in the oven for Christmas dinner, the smell of the crisp morning air (and snow if we’re lucky), and the smell of the tree. Today, I’m wearing a gourmand – Aroma M Geisha Pink. Merry Christmas!

  • My favorite Christmas scents revolve around evergreen. One fragrance that typifies this is the wonderful Wazamba by Parfums d’Empire. It’s an almost crystallized concoction of resins, incense, cypress and fruit. I NEED to acquire a bottle. The Serge Lutens Gingembre needs to worn today,,,and I will put it on happily from my dwindling bottle. Lovely draw!!!

  • Gingerbread is my favorite holiday scent (have some in the oven now!) so this list is just up my alley! For me, Chanel Bois des Iles is a perfect gingerbread scent with a sparkling champagne top and gorgeously smooth sandalwood base. My other favorite holiday scent is woodsmoke in the air! Cuir de Lancome captures that smell perfectly to me.

Thanks for the giveaway! Happy Holidays!

  • My favorite holiday scent is pine and I think L’Artisan Fou de Absinthe is the best fir that I’ve smelled.
For Christmas, I am wearing my present from my sister, Le Labo Belle du Soir.

  • Michelle Hunt says:

Oh…I was so excited to read this I could hardly contain myself….a warm gingerbread gourmand is one of my favorite scent cravings.
I love L ‘Artisan Tea for Two, with its cozy, warm, inviting spicy honey goodness. A perfect winter comfort scent.
. I would love to be entered in the draw, thank you for letting me dream of winning this lovely prize.

  • I love all Christmas scents- simmering cranberry sauce, warm mulled wine, frosty snow, the often overwhelming smell of pine from the tree, rich chocolate, the cosy smell of clean jumpers and of course, spicy gingerbread. I think my favourite smell would definitely be the intense honey smell that fills the air when freshly cooked chestnut shells are cracked in the crisp air, though!

I wore Etat Libre d’Orange’s Don’t Get Me Wrong Baby, I Don’t Swallow, but I’m hoping to find a perfume combining all of the lovely scents above for me to use this time next year! With a much more subtle Christmas tree smell, of course. 😉

  • Actually, my favorite is SL’s Rousse! And I love his Gingembre, I had a small decant a year or so ago, used it up, and remember that it was very energizing!

  • How great! My favorite Holiday scent is the Christmas tree and other green decorations, and is reflected in Fille en Aiguilles. And for me Christmas celebrations were yesterday, and I wore SL Un Bois Vanille.

  • My favorite Christmas smell is lemon and vanilla. My granma’s special Xmas cake.
This year I didn’t want to wear any niche fragrance for Christmas. So many beauties forgotten in the back of my closet. So NU edp for Xmas eve and DK Wenge for Xmas day.

  • Merry Christmas:-) and what an amazing draw to celebrate with. As many others here I love the smell of the Christmas tree, and walking through the “wood” of trees at the Christmas tree sellers is just wonderful and smells like Winter Delice to me. Also I love the smell of Swedish Lucia buns, and this flavour is almost identical to the wonderful Safran Troublant.
For Christmas Days Eve I wore Marron Chic, for the evening Wazamba and for Christmas day Attrape Coeur.
Thank you very much for this wonderfully spicy write-up and draw. So many ginger fragrances yet to explore.

  • Anna in Edinburgh says:

I don’t actually have one favourite Christmas smell.

And I didn’t wear any perfume yet because we were entertaining a guest who is sensitive to scent!

So now you’ve made me crave Origins Ginger Essence, which is what I’ll put on next:-)

  • i love the smell of our traditional christmas cake (i’m from romania) which is kind of divine sweet bread made with eggs, milk, vanilla, rum ,zest of lemon and orange, and filled with a walnuts and cocoa cream. my mom makes the best i’ve ever tasted. perfume wise i do love shalimar and l’heure bleue during winter. today i wore visa by robert piguet which is a warm but dry peach.

  • I don’t like very gourmand perfumes, so the sweet scents and flavours of Christmas (apple, vanilla, chocolate, bitter almond, marzipan, etc) are not common in my perfumes.
However, I really like cinnamon and that’s why I enjoy perfumes like Serge Lutens Rousse in tiny dosis.

The perfume I wear today (Christmas day) is Kenzo Amour le Parfum, becasue incense is other of my favorite notes and it’s a traditional smell too.

  • just breathe says:

Favorite holiday scent is frankincense and the quintessential frankincense fragrance is SSS Incense Pure. thanks for the draw!

  • This year I’m in love with Noir Epices, so I’m wearing it today on Christmas. Oranges and spices–how perfect. I also love the smell and taste of ginger, and your collection of ginger fragrances is very impressive indeed.

  • What a story and what a draw!! I am wearing Makeda- En Voyage today becaus I got it as a gift from santa. I could literally smell ginger when I was reading this. Its funny that I have not smelled any gingerbread this Christmas. Usually somewhere that I go during the Christmas season it smells like gingerbread. Maybe thats why I was not in the holiday swing this year —lack of gingerbread sniffing.
I am not loyal to any scent at the holidays.I always go into Christmas wearing no scent because you never know what is in your stocking.
I would be happy to waft any of the gingerbread scents in this story.
Thanks for the draw.Merry Christmas to everyone at Cafleurebon. And thanks also to secret scent a claus Serge Lutens

  • On x-mas eve I like to wear a smoky incense. Last night I wore CdG Avignon and burned a Messe de Minuit candle. For X-mas morning I am wearing Theorema. How did this beauty ever get discontinued? What a great drawing. Thank you!

  • I am such an SL fan but haven’t smelled many ginger scents yet, including his, so great draw!
Today, Christmas, I wore DSH Cimabue, then later this evening I switched to Perfumie Generale Indochine, which is my new favorite scent.

  • I’ve been wanting to try Five o’Clock au Gingembre! My favorite holiday scents are pine and wood smoke mixed with yummy spices. I get that from Guerlain Winter Delice, which I wore today for Christmas. Thanks so much for the generous draw!

  • *laughing at that Rude Food pic*

I am wearing a small drop of my Aoud Oeillet d’Inde sample which wasn’t really planned. It’s soft but strong enough for me to smell thru my cold.

Holiday smells I love are baking smells mostly, spices, and fireplace-type smells. Actually, I only have a small sample, but I *love* Une Crime Exotique and have worn it a few times recently. Definitely on my wishlist for more. Love that mad scientist gingerbread’ description!
    Curious about Indochine, mentioned above.

Tea for two, mentioned by someone else, hits all of my favorite holiday smells– it has a great smoky background, and tea of course, and a sweet spicy gourmand part too. I wore it last week and remembered how much I love it–and that I was intending to make a decant for a friend.

I think I would love Five o’Clock au Gingembre—even if it’s more tempered by tea, hey, I love tea!

  • taffynfontana says:

my favorite smell of the holidays has to be pork tamales. I just love the spicy smell of roasted chillis and the sweet nuttiness of cooked masa in the air. I love wearing a daring scent full of cumin and spices so for me it’s absolue pour le soir

  • My favourite smell of Christmas is the apple pie. Baked apple pie with cinnamon equals heaven for me. So cozy, so wonderful. Therefore I wore Santana for Men.
Thanks for the giveaway and Happy Holidays to everyone!

  • Favourite Christmas smell? Orange and clove mixed with food aroma and Christmas tree’s pine. I wore Musc Ravageur and looking forward to trying more spices!
All the best, thank you for the giveaway!

  • My favorite Christmas smell is the pine tree! On Christmas Eve I wore Amouage Epic and on Christmas Day Mona di Orio Vanille. Another very Christmasy perfume to me is Ambre Narguile.

  • My favorite Christmas smell is a fresh rosemary. On Christmas I wore Champagne de Bois which, on my skin smells like delicious apricot jam. Thank you for this generous draw and happy holidays to all!

  • During the holidays, I like to wear rich, warm fragrances. Yesterday evening, I wore Ormonde Jayne’s Tolu, and today I woke up with a spritz of DSH Cimabue. It seems the perfect scent as I finish picking up after last night’s gathering of friends and family.

  • I love the smell of pine, that’s why I’ve been wearing SL Fille eu Aguilles a lot lately, I also love the smell of all the goodies being baked, lots of sweet heavenly smells. I wore Puredistance M for Xmas.

  • my favorite holiday scents must be the pine / fir scents — so that would be either olympic orchid’s arizona (for me) or sl fda for my beloved.

which is, in fact, what we wore 🙂

but i think i will move on to ormonde woman today — that, too, being a wonderfully foresty scent.

  • The beloved smell of Fille en Aiguilles remembers me every time I wear it of Christmas. Therefore pine + incense = the smell of Christmas Day for me.

  • I’ve been wearing Delrae’s Bois de Paradis the last 2 Christmas Eves, so that would be my current favorite holiday fragrance. It has a jammy potpourri and candlewax quality that I find very comforting at this time of year.

  • I can’t imagine the getting through the holidays without my ever-dwindling bottle of Guerlain’s ‘Winter Delice.’ Oh, the sugar, the incense, and the pine notes! Bring it on, mother nature, full blast! As long as I have my Winter Delice to comfort me, winter’s my favorite season!

  • My current favorite is Idole EDT. It’s boozy and warm in snowy winter weather, and it goes well with holiday punch.

  • I adore the smell of cinnamon and apples but this time I went with something a little bit different: By Kilian – Back to Black. A warm combination of honey and tobacco. Exquisite.

  • I like Winter Delices as well as A*Men Pure Havane as Christmas-time scents, but I will be wearing Guerlain’s Floral Romantique over the holidays because I received a small decant as a gift. BTW, I really liked the reviews!

  • I lové Caron Nuit De Noël EDt and parfum . I wear It From thanksgiving day until New Year’s Day . I love thé scent of baked Goods, cinnamon, brown sugar , vanilla etc . I love other scents during the holidays like Bois des Iles , Must De Cartier , Chanel no . 22 and Musc Ravageur but Nothing is as perfect as Nuit De
Noël . Narcisse Noir comes close . I have never Worn à Serge Lutens . I would love to win !!

  • My favourite smell for Christmas would be the apple pie my mother prepares every holiday. Did not wear anyhting on C. Day, as I had some guests who came with their baby children.

  • Barely made it! Tried posting from phone didn’t work:( Favorite Christmas scent is Spruce with Frankincense and Myrrh. What did I wear on Christmas Mona di Orio Nuit Noire.
Great article and Thank you SL would love to win this one.
