MB Parfums (Marina Barcenilla) Black Osmanthus Perfume (2017)~New Fragrance Review + www.aveparfum.com Provocative Leathers Draw

Marina Barcenilla of MB Parfums

Marina Barcenilla of MB Parfums is no stranger to the world of fragrance, notably natural perfume. As a two-time FIFI award winning perfumer, and winning a Sustainable Luxury Eluxe Magazine Award for Best Natural Perfume Brand, vivacious and talented Marina is best known in the UK, her adopted homeland. We suspect that’s all about to change and all of us in the U.S will be hearing much more about her and her aromatic creations.

The range is comprised of six perfumes, along with candles, award-winning bath & body products, and room fragrances. The collection represents a good variety of scents and each carry a vivid “sense of place” based on memories and voyages throughout the world. The perfumes are:

India: (UK FiFi Award-Best New Independent Fragrance in 2016). Warm and spicy. Cardamom, coriander and rose with a floral heart on an amber and sandalwood base.

Patchouli Clouds (Beauty Shortlist Award 2017). Warm and exquisite. Soft patchouli, Moroccan rose, Indian jasmine, white woods and spice. All supported by a base of sandalwood and frankincense.

Under The Orange Tree: Warm, sweet and powdery, bitter orange and orange blossom combined with a jasmine heart on a base of vanilla and amber.

Spring Rain: Fresh and aromatic. An herbaceous rose on a bed of tree moss, frankincense and white woods.

The Perfume Garden: (Finalist-Fragrance Foundation Awards) Floriental. Citrus and rose infused orange blossom, with a sandalwood heart on a base of ambergris and resins.

Black Osmanthus

And my favorite, the 2017 Fragrance Foundation Award-winning sleek and mysterious beauty  Black Osmanthus…

“I watched the white flower become as dark as the night sky, the sweet fragrance of nectar-covered petals turn wild and unpredictable, innocence shattered. With deep velvet and warm leather my seduction began with a dangerous touch of the Black Osmanthus. A provocatively spiced floral heart of osmanthus and jasmine is enveloped by the jazz club smokiness of dark wood, leather and rum. An extravagant saffron and myrrh accord enhance the carefree, risqué, dangerous aroma.”-MB Parfums

Ruby Rose for Urban Decay

Black Osmanthus rests solidly in the camp of gender-fluidity, the butch/femme aspect creating a constant sexual dichotomy. With the preponderance of the smoky leather notes, this is a perfume that could just as well pair with a black leather biker jacket and the perfect worn-at-the-crotch Levi’s as with a tight leather bustier with knee-high vinyl spiked heels! It’s a sexy, saucy, and all together naughty scent that fragrantly pushes and pulls throughout its development.

It is at times that forbidden leather bar back room, or the mixed scent of 21st Century flower-child ravers at either Coachella or Glastonbury (home to Ms. Barcenilla’s perfume atelier).Music Festival or Rave especially when the florals come forward to mix with the leather led by the dusky and powdery osmanthus, supported at various times with the tuberose, jasmine, and a healthy dose of beautiful oakmoss. An altogether intriguing, provocative, and distractingly erotic scented dance. Black Osmanthus may very well be the perfume you reach for when a special friend spends the night expecting breakfast at around….oh say….noon?

Notes: Black wood and smoky leather accord, osmanthus, tuberose, Indian jasmine, pepper, oakmoss, patchouli, sandalwood, myrrh, saffron and West Indian rum.

Disclosure: Thank you SO much to Marina Barcenilla for supplying my samples. The  opinions are my own.

Ooh, a new naturals line! Well, new to me! The bottles are fun and funky, and Marina has done a wonderful job with the names… names can be so hard to get right, but these have a great ring to them and go together as a collection well. Black Osmanthus sounds fabulous! So do Spring Rain and the Perfume Garden. Thank you for this generous draw! I’m in the USA.

  • A lovely selection of perfumes! The Perfume Garden sounds the most interesting to me. I live in the US,

  • Oh.My. Perhaps I need more excitement on life! Black Osmanthus would seem to fit the bill. Of the offerings, I think India would suit me best, as j have a special place on my heart for spicy warm cardamom scents. I live on the US and thanks for this opportunity to get to know MB Parfums.

My special friend is my pitti, she sleeps with me every night and expects breakfast from dawn to dusk!! I know she would love Black Osmanthis, as would I.
    Wonderful review!

  • Nice review . Thanks Robert.from these fragrances Patchouli Clouds
Interest me. I’m liking the notes. Haven’t heard of this House
    Thanks for the giveaway

  • I really liked the use of Ruby Rose’s picture in this review and any perfume described as butch/femme sounds like a winner in my book. I am thinking that Black Osmanthus is the fragrance that is most appealing to me as I love leathers, especially floral leathers with saffron.

    I am in the USA.

  • Robert always uses such evocative language in describing these obviously marvelous fragrances. I am particularly interested in India, Patchouli Clouds, and of course, Black Osmanthus. Thanks for the draw. I”m in the USA

  • Thank you so much for the great review Robert, I’m so delighted that my fragrances are now stocked in the USA and that the perfume community there finally has easy access to them. Good luck with the prize draw everyone!

  • I love the way Robert described this fragrance as “gender fluid”. Lately I have been drawn to those types of fragrances. I am also intrigued by India and Patchouli Clouds. I reside in the USA.

  • Thank you, Robert for this interesting review. I like leather in fragranes, so I think I will like this perfume, in advantage that as Robert said:”…creating a constant sexual dichotomy”.
I’m curious about India, which win UK FiFi Award-Best New Independent Fragrance in 2016.

  • Elaine Richard says:

“With deep velvet and warm leather my seduction began” lures me into the scent of Black Osmanthus. That would be my first choice. I love the slightly fruity scent of osmanthus and with the gender fluid earthiness, it sounds divine.
My second choice would be The Perfumed Garden.
Thank you for the offer. I’m in California.

  • I am very intrigued by all of your fragrances Marina, and am so excited to find Aveparfum.com to find cruelty free fragrances and talented perfumers. I just placed an order this weekend! Robert’s reference to the dichotomy of Black Osthmanthus interests me. I’d also love to sample “Under the Orange Tree”, sweet and powdery! I live in USA, thanks for the draw!

  • Love your review. Black Osmanthus sounds gorgeous – leather and smoky notes sound perfect for winter. Though, Patchouli Clouds runs a close second.
    I live in the U.S.

  • Since I adore many masculine scents (my first fragrance purchase was a cologne) Black Osmanthus might be my favorite…though India also sounds lovely and exactly my cup of tea. Favorite bit: “An altogether intriguing, provocative, and distractingly erotic scented dance.”
    Thanks!

  • I love leather scents but am curious about the whole line. I’m in the US, thank you for the generous draw.

  • Wonderful review, Robert! The last line was perfection — haven’t we all been there? (Some of us more than — ahem! — others, I don’t doubt!) Thanks for that chuckle! Black Osmanthus sounds divine, but if I had to pick a second favorite-sounding, I’d guess India…? Patchouli Clouds? Oh, I can’t choose. would love to be the lucky winner so I could find out. (Going to the aveparfum website right now — time for further research!)

  • India and Black Osmanthus are sounding very interesting.
Will look up the website too.

I am of Indian origin so India is really intriguing and will love to own it.

    In WA,USA.

  • Stunning review of a perfumer I’ve been curious about. Definitely curious about the Osmanthus perfume! Thanks!!

  • Black Osmanthus sounds great but I am also intrigued by India. It sounds like she has some good choices in her line. Thanks for the review

  • I’m always looking for natural scents so these all sound amazing, but Black Osmanthus sounds like the perfect balance of masculine and feminine – yin and yang. A tuxedo jacket with a bustier (very YSL:), leather and lace, hard and soft. Balance is key 🙂

India sounds awesome as cardamon is one of my favorite spices to cook with. It’s earthy, warm, and great for digestion. Perfect in the winter months when we don’t have as much sun or fire for digestion! Scents are powerful!

  • I love the whole concept of gender fluidity. Ruby Rose definitely epitomizes this idea. I love how Robert illustrated the quality of Black Osmanthus with the leather bar back room and Coachella. Totally got it.
    I live in the USA.

  • The review of Black Osmanthus really intrigued me the notes seemed phenomenal. What appeals to me most is Black Osmanthus. USA resident
