Caron is indeed the Grand Maison de Haute Parfumerie. Walk into the NYC Caron boutique and there is no denying the grandeur of their Baccarat Fountain Perfumes, one of kind flacons, powder puffs, chandeliers, and some bottles are that are still sealed by baudruchage, a 19th Century technique of sealing perfume bottles. Richard Fraysee is Caron's in-house perfumer and I would imagine that he has had the amazing yet difficult job of looking forward and backwards at the same time, thus bringing Caron into the 21st Century. Caron drips of history, wear Tabac Blond, and immediately feel its power. It was made in 1919 by perfumer Ernest Daltroff as a tribute to the independent women living at that time. Jump 100 years forward to 2011, and you will find Accord 119, made by Mr. Fraysee; it is rich, complex, and a fine example of a haute fruity floral perfume.

On a recent trip to the NYC boutique, I was a little apprehensive when I found that last year Caron launched five fragrances that pay tribute to a few of their original fragrances called La Sélection Caron. I happily can say that I hesitate to call these flankers because they don't feel or act like naughty flankers do. These fragrances are well edited and modern takes on some of their original fragrances. They are thoughtful, well balanced, each distinct and fine variations. They are a tenacious bunch of fragrances, so depending on how you apply them they can easily be worn from day to evening. They are a way to feel the voice of Caron without the weight of their extraits.

Cora Crawley (Elizabeth McGovern) and Lady Rose (Lily James) of Downton Abbey

Two of the five fragrances of the collection, Aimez Moi (1996), and Parfum Sacré (1993) held my attention and do feel different from their mother fragrances, yet as we know the apple doesn’t’ fall far from the tree. La Selection Caron, Aimez Moi (2013) is a gorgeous ruffle of an accord that scurries out of the bottle, the promise of spring. Bergamot, Violet, and Anise, complete this fresh floral and its slightly aldyhedic timbre, Magnolia, and Vanilla keep everything sweetly humming as it quiets. La Sélection Caron, Parfum Sacré (2013) is an airy breathy peppered rose, cinnamon and pepper mixes with Rose to create a rounded perfume that has warmth and lift at the same time. Musk and Myrrh create a bit of earthiness as the fragrance delicately settles into its warm powdery dry down.

While watching the final episode of Season 4 Downton Abbey, I imagined the grounded Cora Crawley wearing the Caron fountain extraits, and the flighty modern Lady Rose wearing these two from La Sélection. Both are incredibly and equally lovely in very different ways.

I adore Caron and would be delighted to sample the reworked fragrances. My personal favorite is Caron Poivre, which I can imagine Lady Mary selecting. The urns are so impressive!

  • I’ve just recently watched this series, I’m a bit slow to the Downton craze. My favorite character is Lady Lady Mary. Favorite Caron Tabac Blond.. I’m in the US. Thanks for the chance to try these..

  • julesinrose says:

I like Aimez Moi. My favorite Downton Abbey character is Violet, the Dowager Countess, but I fear she wouldn’t have worn Caron, thinking it too modern! Edith is my second favorite character and she (and I) would like Nuit de Noel. I’m in the US. Cheers!

  • I have recently been obsessed with Caron, and I cannot get enough of Caron Rose! I also like Aimez-Moi quite a lot. My favorite Downton Abbey character is the Countess Dowager, and I think she would wear Nuit de Noël!

  • ringthing says:

I’m a longtime fan of Parfum Sacre and would love to smell the modern take. And it’s so hard to choose a favorite Downton character – Mrs Hughes was the MVP this last season, but she’d never get to wear Caron, poor thing!

  • Kim Morgan says:

My favorite character is Violet. She would wear Aimez Moi (for the violet notes, of course!)… and I would love to try the same. I would love to try any of them!

  • carole macleod says:

Oh, Tabac Blond for me and Lady Mary 🙂

    Thank you for this,
    Carole

ps-just tried Magnolia Grandiflora-Michel. Beautiful beyond belief!

  • Aimez would be my choice. I think Dowager Countess would be sacre, but really who would dare question what ever she would wear.

  • I would love to try the Parfum Sacre. I have not seen Downton Abbey yet 🙂 Thank you, and this review really made me want to visit the boutique!

  • I’ve always wanedt to try Parfum Sacre. I don’t know why I haven’t watched much of Downton Abbey. Usually I catch ten minutes or so and then have to run off somewhere.

Now ask me about The Blacklist!

  • My favorite Caron is Nuit de Noel. My favorite character is the Dowager Countess – and I agree with shellyw – she would wear whatever she wanted! I am in the US.

  • Monoatomic says:

I’d have to say Tabac Blonde, but Aimez Moi – and the promise of spring – sounds pretty good right now! My favorite character from Downton Abbey is of course the Dowager Countess, but I suspect that she would only wear a proper British scent. I’m in the US.

  • I would love to try Parfum Sacre- also dying to try Nuit de Noel. I’m in the US.

  • Fazal Cheema says:

My favorite Caron perfume is Third Man but i would love to try Tabac Blond in extrait form. My favorite Downton
Abbey character is Cora and the one most suited to her maybe Nuit de Noel. I am in the US

  • I love Caron and Downton Abbey. They are both venerable institutions that have had to change with the times and yet maintain roots in history and tradition. It’s hard to choose a favorite character, but I am always gratified by Mrs. Hughes. She is very surprising at times so I will have her wear beautiful Bellodgia because underneath her boring uniforms and practical demeanor is a lovely and creative woman. Thanks for the draw. I live in the U.S. And, yes, Bellodgia is my favorite.

  • maysamassimo says:

My favorite Caron is Muguet de Bonheur parfum. I’m in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • Marion Low says:

I have loved caron perfumes for a long time, my Mother wore Fleurs de Rocaille. My fav was Narcisse Noir until Parfum Sacre came along. Downton Abbey is fun to watch, my favored character is Anna, who probably never wore fragrance, but being a lady’s maid must have been exposed to some classic perfumes. I think she would love and wear if she could my Mother’s Fleurs de Rocaille, it’s cool and delicate but strong underneath like Anna is. I’m in the USA.

  • I love parfum sacre. I have a bit of vintage in both parfum and edp. I would love to try the current form. I would choose for Violette, Accord 119! (also a beauty) Did I say, I love Caron???!

  • I have only tried Tabac Blond so far and I LOVE it!! My favorite Downton Abbey character is the Dowager Countess and I think she would wear Parfum Sacre.Thank you for such an amazing and generous draw.I would be thrilled to win.I reside in the US.

  • My favorite Caron is Parfum Sacre. I just love that rose, vanilla and incense combo. The one I want to try the most is Aimez Moi.

My favorite Downton Abbey character is Violet. I think Tabac Blond or Bellodgia might be rather suitable such a personality?

  • Being only slightly familiar with the Caron repertoire, I once purchased a small sample of a carnation scent from Caron, via The Perfumed Court. I can’t recall the name of it though! I was looking for scents that were similar to JAR’s Golconda, and this one was one of five decants I received (along with a painfully small, and exceedingly expensive decant of the actual Golconda). I think “poive” was in the name? Anyway, it would be a treat, and a great introduction to win the sampler offered in this draw. Here’s hoping! Thanks for the post. I’ll have to stop by the NYC shop sometime soon.

  • My favorite Caron scent IS a toughie. Natcisse Noir extract and Yatagan are neck & neck…

I am in the US, and don’t watch Downton Abbey but from reading precious comments, maybe I should start.

  • rodelinda says:

My favorite Caron, and my very favorite perfume of any I’ve ever smelled, is Nuit de Noel. I also own Aimez Moi and Parfum Sacre and would love to smell the La Selection versions. Thanks!

  • Many years ago my Mom wore Bellodgia. Anything that would be a reminder of her would be my choice. It would be such a joy to experience Bellodgia revisited.

  • My favorite Caron perfume is poivre and I could see lady rose wearing it. I love Caron perfumes and would love to try the rest of the line

  • My favorite Caron is Nuit de Noel and my favorite Downton Abbey character is Lady Violet.

  • I love Carons. There was a phrase about Guerlain vs Caron, not sure I agree, but definitely notice that Caron-ade generally works for me but Guerlain-ade doesn’t.

Parfum Sacre and Poivre are probably my top two, with Bellodgia and Farnesiana next. So excited to hear the new accompanists to the originals are also lovely!
Would be very curious to compare my PS with the new one.
The boutique was wonderful when I visited many years ago, I still covet those down powderpuffs…

Have only seen the first season of Downton. I think Lady Cora might go for an English-rose type of scent to fit in, like or maybe a violet one like Aimez-Moi. And the Lord of the Manor would wear Pour Un Homme.

  • Elizabeth T. says:

My favorite Caron is Tabac Blond (the only other one I’ve tried being Violette Precieuse). I am in the USA, thank you as always for the draw!

  • Jessica Marie says:

Hello! I’m in the US and would love a chance to enter! I have never been able to experience a Caron perfume but they are all raved about on my perfume forum and I’d be so happy if I won and finally got to see what all the fuss is about! Thank you!

  • I’m in the US and I would love to try these modern takes on the classic Caron fragrances. I adore both Tabac Blond and Poivre. I don’t think I can choose between the two!

  • I’m in the US and I love Bellodgia and Tabac Blond. I would looove to try Piu Bellodgia…

  • My favorite Caron cologne is Caron Pour Homme. I would love to try the new fragrances. I’m in the US and thanks for the draw.

  • My favorite Caron is Montaigne. I think the dearly departed Sybil could have handled it. I am in the US

  • wefadetogray says:

I so much want to try a vintage version of Nuit de Noel!! Every Christmas I think about it. I have also been interested in Aimez-Moi so thanks so much for the opportunity. I am not a TV watcher so I have not seen Downton Abbey 🙁
Thanks. I am in the US.

  • helical gnome says:

My first steps into the world of perfume came after reading a long article on Caron, and particularly about Parfum Sacre. I was moved. I wanted to buy it. Then I got swallowed into this scented rabbit hole to never leave and I still havent tried the perfume that started it all.
I am in the US. Thanks 🙂

  • I love Parfum Sacre, and would be delighted to try it along with the others from La Sélection Caron. Like many here, my favorite Downton character is the Dowager Countess (though I’m always rooting for Daisy to really come into her own). I’m in the US.

  • Anastasia says:

Tabac Blond with Parfum Sacre as a close second, are my 1st and second favorite Carons! Nice article Valerie! I live in the US thank you for the opportunity!

  • Heather P says:

I love Tabac Blond, although I’d really like to find a vintage sample at some point. Nice article with gorgeous pics…thanks for the draw! (I’m in the US, if that’s important here.)

  • My favorite Caron of the few I’ve tried so far is Pour Un Homme, and it would smell great on Matthew Crawley. I’m in the US.

  • My favorite character is Daisy. She just seems so sweet. Didn’t this seem like the shortest season ever? However, I am looking forward to Call The Midwife. Tabac Blond would be my favorite and I am in the U.S.

  • My favorite perfume by Caron is also in my top 5 perfume favorites of all time: Parfum Sacre. I have, from the very start, loved both Mrs. Hughes and Edith Crawley equally. I can’t imagine Mrs. Hughes indulging herself in any perfume, so I’ll go with Edith. I think she would wear Bellodgia.

Thank you for the generous draw!

  • Susannetta says:

I have never tried Caron, but after reading the description I would love to try Parfum Sacré the most, sounds like a beautiful rose! My favourite character to watch on DA is Thomas! It’s more of love-to-hate with Mr. Barrow because he so deliciously diabolical and unpredictable. (He has a website called evilbutler, lol ) So based on notes I am going to guess that from Caron he might wear Narcisse Noir, it seems a little dark and sinister? I’m in Canada, Thanks for the draw!

  • My favorite Caron scent is Poivre. I have never been to the New York store, but I did visit their shop in Paris and found the staff to be quite gracious. They were about to close for the night and the SA gave my friend and me each a boxed sample of our choice even though it was clear we had no time to make a purchase.
I thought poor Matthew was a wonderful character and so progressive in his thinking. Therefore, I think he could have pulled off Yatagan.
I live in the US (tri-state area, in fact) and will be sure to check out the remodeled NYC store some day. Thank you for the draw!

  • I have never had the pleasure of trying Caron, though I’ve researched them and know that there are several I’d love to try but Parfum Sacre is top of the list. I like Cora Crawley, among others. I can see her in Aimez Moi to keep up her optimism. I’m in the US.

  • I have never tried any of the Carons but Parfum Sacre has been on my to try list for a while. I live in the US but don’t have TV service so have never seen Downton Abbey 🙁

  • I have worn Pour Homme for years and really enjoy it. From Downtown Abby I think Tom might wear Le Troisieme Homme de Caron for it’s citrus and bergemot notes. (I wore it back in the 80’s and recall it with great fondness.)

  • rosiegreen says:

My favorite Caron is the Original Parfum Sacre . From Downton Abbey I think the Dowager Lady Crawley would wear N’Aimez Moi.

  • I have not tried Caron, but I think I would really love Farnesiana. My favorite, the Dowager Countess, might wear Nuit de Noel. I am in the US. Thank you.

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

I would love to try Parfum Sacre. My favorite Downton Abbey is Lady Edith and she migh wear Caron Tubac Blond fragrance.

  • Carole Fallon says:

I would love to win Aimez-Moi. My favorite Downton Abbey character is the Dowager Countess, whom I can see in Piver Heliotrope Blanc or Or et Noir. I am in the US. Thanks!

  • I have not tried Caron, but am drawn to the description of La Selection Caron, Aimez Moi.
