Jusbox Perfumes Beat Cafe Review (Dominique Ropion) + Hepcat Draw

Beatnik,  photo by Daria Nelson

Drums tap out a stark rhythm to the jangle of cymbals. The coffee house looks like a thousand other such joints: formica tables and mismatched chairs, posters plastered hurriedly at oblique angles, random photos. A girl with the cat’s eye glasses and bangs as shiny black as a new LP leans back and drags on her Gauloise as the smell of motorcycle grease, sweat and new leather jacket seeps through the room from the biker boys in the back. This is the Beat Generation, and 19-year old Bob Dylan is about to play.

The Beats were one of the most influential literary and artistic groups of the twentieth century. Their rejection of materialism, nonconformist attitudes towards sex, drugs and everything mainstream, paved a path to the counterculture movements of the 1960s and influenced generations of artists, writers and musicians, including the young Bob Dylan. Beat Cafe, from Italian house Jusbox Perfumes, takes us to a Village Beat hangout redolent of leather jackets, booze and smoke and punctuated with spice.

Perfumer Dominique Ropion does not pull his punches with Jusbox Perfumes Beat Cafe. It packs a woody-green wallop at first, with a rough-hewn barrel of cedar, anisic, rooty vetiver and soapy coriander that practically careens out of the bottle. This is a big daddy of primeval, earthy green and hunting lodge smells that is almost hopelessly masculine (rather like the fraternity of the Beats) But almost immediately, ambery-medicinal cognac takes over, adding some welcome fruitiness to balance out the dryness of the opening and warm things up. Jusbox Perfumes Beat Cafe sticks two fingers in the air to conventional leather fragrances and hops on a Triumph motorcycle.

Smack in the middle, the oily, tarry smell of new leather vrooms in, labdanum on the back seat adding its characteristic sweaty-sweet tang, and pungent black pepper closing in at the rear. This leather is big, raw, petrolly, the kind that belongs to anti-heroes from dimestore thrillers.

Rolling tobacco sidles up, its loamy richness recalling the earthy greenness of the opening. The leather and vetiver start a back-and-forth with the cognac and subtle sweetness from the resins. It’s almost a draw in the end: the raw swagger of vetiver and leather tempered by the refinement of the cognac. Coriander returns, and the resins soften the hardboiled notes just enough to make this wearable by Beatniks or Beatchicks. Black beret optional. Notes: Black pepper, coriander seed, fine cognac accord, cistus labdanum, black leather, tobacco, vetiver, cedarwood, benzoin balm.

This review gave me a little information about the 50s culture, especially, the influence of beatniks over the coming decades including the 60s. Jusbox Perfumes Beat Cafe pays homage to music and has notes such as green and leathery aspects that seem to pay tribute to artistic attire during that era. I have heard but not really familiar with beatnik music. I am in US

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I enjoyed hearing how green, rooty, aromatic, and leathery this sounds! I also like how the general edgy feel reminds me of the beats, even though the ingredients aren’t directly associated, to me, with the beats. I’m not super familiar with beat music, but have read “on the road!” Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • I always loved Bob Dylan’s music and “that look” he had…very cool. I’m attracted to leather fragrances and would love to try this. USA

  • Lauryn, boy do I love the way you write! You took me right back to the Village in the 60’s. Beat Cafe is a beautiful fragrance from Jusbox. I hope your review inspires a lot of readers to seek it out and try it!

Tobacco and spices??? I’m there!!! Dominique is in my top 5 perfumers, so I know this is a beaute. But it’s Lauryn’s description of the uber masculine leather that really made my heart flutter. If her experienced nose found it raw and petrolly, this has really got to be up my alley. I’ve often pondered what it would be like to smothered in tarry hides dipped in smoky resins and booze. Nasomatto’s Baraonda comes close to drowning in a vat of whiskey and I can imagine this being its’ smoky hipster brother. Despite beatnik music being a little before my time, it’s never too late to appreciate the history – plus that groovy bottlecap! Everything plus daddy-o. USA.

I was just a kid when the beats were big, but Lauryn’s review evoked the whole ethos of expresso, abstract expressionism, cool jazz, the Living Theater, poetry readings. She made the fragrance sound like great fun. I remember the folk music movement, of which Dylan was a part, and the jazz culture of the Village. I’m in the US.

  • I’m not familiar with Bob Dylan music at all I’ve heard the name, but that’s it. I do like cafe racer bikes, leather jackets , cognac and tobacco so Beat Cafe sounds super fun and enjoyable. I do like the bottle too. I’ve never heard of “Beatnik music “ expression before. Thx to all involved in this giveaway. USA

  • Cognac and tobacco are two of my favorite notes in perfume. It took me a while to “get” Dylan but when I finally did, I fell hard. His music has is bitingly serious and cheekily satirical, deep and simplistic but above all else beautiful. He had great style as well.

I gave up smoking, drinking, drugs, but I still love perfumes that recall all my old ways. I especially love tarry and petrolly fragrances. I checked the playlist on the Jusbox website for Beat Cafe. (I love that the website has playlists for its fragrances). I found it interesting that Janis Joplin was on the list. I think I remember that she started out singing in beat cafes. She could also be on a rock playlist and a blues playlist. I love vintage Dylan. Such a style icon.

  • I am lover of Bob Dylans music and love that a fragrances company is combining 2 arts. I really believe fragrance is an art and think those who love fragrances would agree. I am in CA, USA.

  • This seems like a great leather fragrance for men and although I don’t know much about beatnik music I read the howl and on the road. Dylan is great don’t think twice it’s all right !
Very interesting review and I want to check out more jusbox like black powder

  • Bob Dylan before he got really famous. The beatnik days were interesting and fun, as the pictures tell. A fragrance about that time sound interesting and fun too. I live in the US.

  • I really enjoy Lauryn’s writing style! One of my favorite lines are : “This leather is big, raw, petrolly, the kind that belongs to anti-heroes from dimestore thrillers.” This fragrance sounds right up my alley! Leather, booze, tobacco… just lovely. Arkansas, USA

  • I’ve had the chance to try a few Jusbox fragrances and this one Beat cafe and Live’n loud were the best in that line imho. The drydown is superb. Thanks for this amazing chance ✌Oakland US.

  • Ooh, this sounds fun, and I would love to pretend to be cool some days by wearing this! Everyone knows Dylan, but I’m not sure I know other Beat musicians, do Simon &. Garfunkel count? I think not. I have not tried other scents from this house. Thx for the review and the draw! I’m in the us

This brand sounds so fun! “Jusbox Perfumes Beat Cafe sticks two fingers in the air to conventional leather fragrances and hops on a Triumph Motorcycle.” I am always looking for new takes on leather scents and this sounds wonderful. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Thank you Lauryn you’ve described it sounds like a big robust scent I like Dominque Ropion and I like the sound of this fragrance. I’ve not yet tried Jusbox yet I’ve read good things about it. Between the woody green leather and cognac beat cafe sounds a fitting name. Thank-You! Europerfumes for the sample thanks Lauryn for the great review and I lOVE the pics. USA

  • I love how this scent is a sweet leather composition. I find that the music associations of JusBox are well thought out. You can find these fragrances in Houston at Kuhl-Linscomb as well!

  • I’m not familiar with Batnik music. However this caught my attention about Beat Cafe… “It packs a woody-green wallop at first, with a rough-hewn barrel of cedar, anisic, rooty vetiver and soapy coriander that practically careens out of the bottle.” It sounds kinda powerful scent.

  • Thanks for another great review, Lauryn! I love how you are able to bring us to places and events through your words. It’s as if I can see, hear, smell, feel and taste the Beatnik music. So wonderful! I love this part of your description- ‘The leather and vetiver start a back-and-forth with the cognac and subtle sweetness from the resins. It’s almost a draw in the end: the raw swagger of vetiver and leather tempered by the refinement of the cognac.’ I hope to sample Jusbox soon! Thanks for this opportunity. – CA, USA

  • As a biker girl i do know Triumph motorcycles , own quite a few leather jacket and i’m used to the smell of motorcycle grease.
Beatnik is a word i learned just now , and even even though i know Bob Dylan is a musician i do not know any songs of his-not even one.
” But almost immediately, ambery-medicinal cognac takes over, adding some welcome fruitiness to balance out the dryness of the opening and warm things up. Jusbox Perfumes Beat Cafe sticks two fingers in the air to conventional leather fragrances and hops on a Triumph Motorcycle.”

That’s the best part of Lauryn’s review.I just love fragrances with pronounced boozy notes , especially if there’s some resins in the mix.The vinyl looking cap is nice – overall design is top notch.
Thank you Europerfumes for this opportunity.

  • I really like Lauryn’s descriptions of the settings of this scent. Sounds fascinating as does Beat Cafe. What a powerful combination of notes this seems to be. Thanks for the draw and for a fabulous review. I’m in the USA

  • Leather, booze, tobacco and some spice sounds like A good fragrance.
Havent tried anything from this House or much boozy Tobacco scents.
Hope to get a chance. Thanks. US

  • Interesting review, than you Lauryn!!!
Mostly I liked this part: “This leather is big, raw, petrolly, the kind that belongs to anti-heroes from dimestore thrillers”- leather is my favorite note.
I like Bob Dylan music, too.

  • Damn, this sounds SO good!!! I love leathery fragrances and this one sounds so deep and rich. I love this statement ” It packs a woody-green wallop at first, with a rough-hewn barrel of cedar, anisic, rooty vetiver and soapy coriander that practically careens out of the bottle. ” That last part about practically careening out of the bottle made such an impression on me!
I am familiar with Beatnik music and I do like some Bob Dylan songs. It’s just not my style of music I typically listen to.
    I live in the US.

  • The description of the opening sounds like some of those Indian ittars, but it sounds like it goes in a totally different direction with the booze and leather. SOunds interesting.
I’m not really so familiar with Beatnik music.

Im in IL in the US. thanks for the draw

  • Grandiflora says:

What strikes me about Beat Cafe based on Lauryn’s review is the description of “Jusbox Perfumes Beat Cafe sticks two fingers in the air to conventional leather fragrances and hops on a Triumph motorcycle”. That made me giggle. I am familiar with Beatnik music. Bill Evans & Jim Hall – “Undercurrent” is one of my favorite albums! I’m in the U.S.

  • As I said in the comments got the earlier Jusbox perfume if their sampler set of four had this one and Feather Chypre I would already own it!

I’m in the US & registered. Though I’ve already been flirting with this scent Lauryn’s comment of “Beat Cafe, from Italian house Jusbox Perfumes, takes us to a Village Beat hangout redolent of leather jackets, booze and smoke and punctuated with spice.” sealed the deal…it’s going on the wishlist!! I love early Dylan…

I married Isis on the fifth day of May…

PS Thanks for such a generous draw prize! Plus it’s a Ropion *sighs*

  • Thanks so much for all your comments. If you’ve never read Beat poetry, I highly recommend the anthology Beat Voices.

  • I enjoyed this article.
I’ve never heard about “black” leather.
I think leather with cognac sounds very magnetic , especially for male .
    USA

  • Thanks for the review and the draw! I like the notes in this scent and the way Lauryn describes it. I also like early Bob Dylan. As for the Beats, I definitely recommend checking out Women of the Beat Generation by Brenda Knight. I’m in the U.S.

  • The name Dominique Ropion excites and shivers all the time I read and hear his name. Reading and looking these 60s photos reminded me of my late father. I bet, Lauryn Beer, has smelled these kind of men way back then, they way she pens. Can you imagined them with leather jackets on their motorcycle smoking tabacco or cigar, wow!
You hit the BEAT Cafe reviews. Love how you manipulated the facts, bringing the past to present. The intensity of your words, wish we had a time machine.

This is awesome draw. Live in SC USA
    Thank you.

  • Interesting article , but unfortunately i can not associate myself well with it , because i do not know Beatnik music , The Beats and i only know Bob Dylan is a singer and also writer … and that’s it.I can’t tell a singe song of his.
I love riding bikes , so the smell of so called “motorcycle grease” and leather are within me so to speak.
A teetotaller and non-smoker here , but i just love boozy and smoky tobacco smells , so Beat Cafe is right up my alley type of fragrance – love all the notes.
By the way bottle disigner did a great job – both simplistic and classy at the same time. The cap i really like.
Thank yoy Cafleurebon and Europerfumes for the generosity , and miss Lauryn Beer for the review.
