Jo Malone Honeysuckle and Davana (Ann Flipo) ~ New Fragrance

The brief for Jo Malone Honeysuckle and Davana was to capture the exact scent of honeysuckle, which we were able to do thanks to the headspace we created in the Cotswolds. We added an unexpected twist to this very English flower with davana, moss and patchouli, turning it into a modern chypre.” Anne Flipo, Master Perfumer

According to Celine Roux, Head of Fragrance Development for Jo Malone, “Honeysuckle is a quintessential English flower, and it’s not a flower we talk about a lot in perfumery. In England, it’s very rare to not have a story about honeysuckle. It always brings you back to a happy moment. It grows wild and almost surprises you. With a rose, you go to smell it in your garden. With honeysuckle it surprises you on your walk.” Honeysuckle cannot be produced naturally, so the challenge was to capture its essence through technology. The English honeysuckle headspace is a lifetime exclusive to Jo Malone London, which they created with the help of the team at The National Arboretum.

Ann Flipo, the renowned perfumer who composed Jo Malone Honeysuckle and Davana states “that the fragrance starts with fresh and bright rose oxide and neroli. The scent of the honeysuckle rises, enlightened by the floralcy of rose and the slightly fruity note of osmanthus. The davana in the top notes resonates, helping to enhance the woody signature of moss and sandalwood, which gives the fragrance its character. Mme Flipo had smelt it before, but came across it again while looking at other natural ingredients and realized that it would be perfect for this fragrance. "It brings a fresh, fruity, green note at the top of the fragrance.”

  • A few weeks ago I was purchasing Jo Malone’s amazing new mint/ginger lip balm for my Mom and the kind salesman gave me a sample of this. It lasts quite well for a Jo Malone. I don’t gravitate towards the floral genre in fragrance, but this one is quite pleasant. I passed it on to my Mom who adored it. May have to get her a FB for her birthday.

This is quite interesting, that this fragrance was created with the assistance of the National Arboretum to capture the essence of Honeysuckle.
However, I had to look up what Davana is, since I was not familiar with it. It is an herb that is steam distilled in southern India and the resulting oil has a strong fruity odor.
    I am intrigued already!
Thank you for the head’s up!

I’m such an addict for the latest Jo Malone, adding to my list! I am not familiar with Davana note, either. Even though this sounds spring-like, I will have to snap it up right away just in case it is no longer available next spring.

A little additional information on Davana: In India, this strong and respected oil is a very affective insect repellant, yippee!
