Yes, the celebuscents can  give gourmand, sweet and vanilla scents a bad name. Now, the new trend among women celebrities like Beyonce, Jennifer Aniston  and Dita von Teese are away from fruits, candy, and  vanilla,  Dita reinvents herself, which is just fine but  you better believe this wasn't her publicity shot. for her  her new fragrance which will cost $38,  and is inspired by  Houbigant Quelque Fleures . Dita quipped "There’s no fruity vanilla. I’m sorry, but you know what I mean? A lot of celebrity fragrances are fruit, vanilla, and I wanted something for grown-up girls,” Dita says. Just like all the others…

Well this grown up girl knows you are not going to get anything resembling Quelque Fleures for $38. So my new "Girl crush" is Katy Perry who was photographed by Will Cotton for her album cover, in her own pink  cotton candy cloud, looking very grown up, don't you think?

 

So I asked a very grown up perfumer Liz Zorn why vanilla and fruity fragrances get such a bad rap.

"Too often our association with the word Vanilla has more to do with taste than smell. Vanilla in scent when used as vanillin or ethyl  vanillin can be one dimensional, sweet, simple and ordinary. It is
 linear without depth or nuance. And unfortunately is the vanilla most  often used in perfumery. Vanilla from the bean as in Vanilla Absolute  is much deeper, rich and very complex.  Try Vanillaville by Soivohle.

Most florals are fruity, or at least have a fruity quality to them. As flowers have a natural sweetness, that is pleasing to the nose. I think that the fruity floral gets a bad rap because so many of them are released each year, without a lot of difference between them. They are generally marketed to young women and girls, who are obviously buying them. If this were not the case, the companies who are producing these perfumes would change their marketing strategy.However, it is sometimes refreshing to wear an essence that is light and fun. I do get the appeal. And have no problems using words like fruity floral, or for that matter wearing them". Liz's new Summer Jasmine is a fruity floral.

At the end of the day it's about quality and skin chemistry.

When I was a publicist for Luckyscent, sweet, gourmand and vanilla fragrances were about 50% of the site's business. But according to Franco Wright, its now about 35% as the new ouds, incenses  and green florals are trending,

    WOO-HOO! Hey – sometimes a sailor ain’t lookin’ for Mitsouko, if you know what I’m sayin’! 😉

    I’ll admit it – just today a lady I work with was wearing a really awesome fruity floral, and I was thoroughly enjoying it, every time I passed her in the hallway. I had to suppress the urge to get her to spill on what it was. But one thing is certain. The old gal Mitsy would have been wrong, wrong, WRONG!

    So – floss on, Katy Perry! (Grrrrrrr!)

    I am usually not a fan of sweets in fragrance, including vanilla, but I will definitely admit to being intrigued by the description of Soivohle Vanillaville.

    On Liz Zorn’s site, I discovered that she has a new “pour homme” collection, and one of the fragrances (with really fetching notes – lime, violet, carnation, cedar, oakmoss) is called Rivertown Road.

    I think I’m going to have to try that Rivertown Road! I don’t care if it’s marketed to men!

    Oh yes, both the Soivohle Vanillaville and Summer Jasmin are calling my name!

    I have a sample of Aroma M Geisha Pink, which I like a lot. it is a sweet little concoction, not overly done or prone to cause cavities. It is for my younger self. 🙂

    I did see that review of Regalisse Noire…very nice indeed and definitely on my list.

    I love vanilla in food and in perfume. But variations in non fruity floral variations but with tobacco and rum like L’Artisan’s Traversee du Bosphore or Havana Vanille.

    Soivohlest newest are Rivertown Road and Transcendental Musc.

    I ordered Reglisse Noire to support the cause, thinking I would pass it on, as I’m not a fan of anise. I haven’t received it yet but NOW I assume I may like it as it is being described as a gourmand. I love vanilla (in foods and perfume notes).which evokes a feeling of comfort to me. As a child I wore pure vanilla oil that I purchased from an essential oil store in NYC. I think there are several niche companies that are making grown up versions of gourmands that are lovely to wear. Sonoma Scent Studio’s Winter Woods melts into my skin and evokes a warm, buttery, vanilla/amber/musk scent. (and no one asks if I am eating cotton candy as they do when my 12 and 14 year old daughters wear their favorite- Pink Sugar- Yuck!). Rivertown Road, Liz’s new creation, sounds lovely as I am also a fan of lime and violet. Thanks for the draw!

    You missed the notes Plum (or Prune) in both Hiroshima Mon Amour and Vanille Aoud, Apricot in Jeux de Peau, and Cherry Nut, whatever that smells like–also in Hiroshima Mon Amour. I adore vanilla, but after Spiriteuse Double Vanille and Havana Vanille I don’t look to hard for more vanillas–Vanillaville I have tried and it’s too “heavy” for me, though it has something magical about it. My favorite sweetie is Serge Lutens Douce Amere, it practically makes me drool on myself!The anise in it is stunning, and the jasmine is sweet but doesn’t feel flowery or dominant. And whatever Christopher Sheldrake does to absinthe, he makes it deeply drinkable! Oh and Lutens Rahat Loukhoum transforms me into an absolute gourmand-lover for the wearing! It makes being a type I diabetic easier to bear. I still must try Hilde Soliani’s Conaffetto. I love Sipario by Hilde Soliani, and I never thought I would enjoy smelling like a pina colada, haha! Reglisse Noir is gorgeous, but it really seems the most Oriental of Gourmands–it doesn’t cross the candy line, and I love it all the more for that!
    I want to try Chocolate Greedy, it has some friends’ accolades. Sounds deep without being too sweet, yum!

    Brigitte I also put pure vanilla on and benzoin I canwear straight up these are grown up gourmands all of them curated by me in the luckyscent draw

    Michelyn, you smell delicious! No surprise that you curated the Luckyscent draw since all those scents smell so good on you. Sweet scents mostly don’t work that well for me, although there are some I really like — L’Oiseau de Nuit, Traversee du Bosphore, and lately Prada Candy. My skin chemistry seems to need an edge of leather or smoke.

    Transcendental Musc is another of Liz Zorn’s new perfumes. I would love to smell her sample set.

    I believe Ms. Zorn’s latest perfumes are her “Soivohle Pour Homme” collection. One being “Transcendental Musc” (which is the one I’m most excited to try.
    (Though the second one, “Rivertown Road” sounds pretty enticing too)

    I have been wanting to try the trio of Keiko Mercheri’s Loukoum scents. I like the original and want to try the other two which were off-shoots of it.
    I admit to liking some sweet scents, and would love to try the Luckyscent sampler. Notes not listed in the descriptions: M. Micallif Vanilla Oud–bergamont and prune, Serge Lutens Jeux de Peu –licorice and apricot, and Moni di Ora Musc — angelica and heliotrope. Yum!

    I know I’m too late here, so I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed being reminded of all the nice sweet shop fragrances out there and the nice pics. ‘Chocolate gready’ can be amazing on cold and rainy days.
