House of Kerosene Summer Of ‘84 (John Pegg) 2017~ New Perfume Review + Childhood in Detroit Draw

Perfumer John Pegg has a wildly devoted following for his House Of Kerosene perfumes, and rightly so as his new product releases, which are often quiet, unobtrusive and without much fanfare, are more often than not fantastic scents and highly covetable. His latest release is a very limited edition called Summer Of ‘84, and is a glowing and innocent tribute to that particular moment in John’s childhood.

The Cover of the Detroit Free Press

It was the year the Detroit Tigers won the World Series, a time when I was young. The summer air smelled as new and clean as grapefruit pop sunk with ice cubes, fizzed in warm sun. Popsicle wrappers and fresh cut melons half-eaten on the picnic table. It was the Summer Of ‘84.” -John Pegg

1984, a lifetime ago for some of us. In the summer of 1984, American pop culture was at a neon-hued, shoulder-pad rocking, hair-teasing, fever pitch. We were flocking  to the movie theaters to see “Ghostbusters”, “Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom”, “Gremlins” and a movie that helped define the era; “Sixteen Candles” with its breakout performance by Molly Ringwald.

New perfume releases that year included Ysatis by Givenchy, Coco by Chanel, Annick Goutal’s Tuberose, Rose Absolue, Heure Exquise, and Patou’s 1984 edition of Joy edt.

Bruce Springsteen and a young Demi Moore  "Dancing in the Dark"

The radios were on constant rewind with Prince’s “When Doves Cry”, Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time”, the soundtrack of “Footloose”, and Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing InThe Dark” from his seminal album “Born In The U.S.A.”

Summer Of ‘84 Perfume is a tribute to the sweet and sharp days of a Midwestern summer; bright and humid, but as always, sheer magic to a child. The fragrance is linear in the best way possible and citrus is the star here. A pithy, mouthwatering and true-to-life grapefruit shot thru with the zest of a lemon and tempered by the floralcy of bergamot create a scent that is like a melting popsicle in the heat of a warm August, profoundly uplifting and happy as hell, with that particular sunshiny feeling that a child experiences.

The melon sits in the background, and combined with the floral notes and water aspect bring to mind a table under a willow tree next to a creek, or maybe a patio set-up beneath a vivid beach umbrella next to a cool and sparkling swimming pool. Both tables graced by summer flowers in a vase picked just ten minutes ago, and plates of juicy melon; moisture-beaded in the heat, tempting and taunting for a first delicious and refreshing bite. Summer. To a child, the days and weeks seem to stretch out forever, an endless joyous existence to savor before the real world intrudes and adulthood beckons.

Wonderful review, I love all reviews that speak of childhood memories, and I have some wonderful childhood memories of summer that are similar to the ones mentioned here. The cold watermelon on a hot day, water, the endless days before school started again – all of those wonderful things. I wasn’t yet born in 1984 so no memories unfortunately. I don’t have a favorite Kerosene fragrance yet!

  • Ahh memories…of raising four children, going to work, and just surviving each day. I don’t have a favorite Kerosene fragrance, but this sounds fabulous. Thanks for the draw. I live in the USA

I grew up in mid-Michigan, a 90 minute drive from Detroit. I wasn’t of the generation who watched the Tigers winning the 1984 World Series, instead I remember as a young teenage boy the Tigers winning the 1968 World Series, and listening to the play by play announcer on a 10 transistor radio. The 80’s were times of happiness for me, but in California where I now live, instead of Michigan. My oldest son was born in September 1984, so I was a busy young dad. But the 80’s were the 80’s no matter where one lived. I know the humid heat of August in Michigan, as the first thing I remember when returning home after touching down in the plane from California was the lush greenery and smells that washed over me when stepping out of the plane in Lansing, and the feel of hot August nights. Frequent thunderstorms kept everything smelling fresh. I love the imagery in the review. Although I haven’t smelled anything in the Kerosene line yet, I have watched reviews of others who very much like these perfumes. Follow is a coffee fragrance I would really love to check out. I would also love to try the Summer of 84. (San Jose, California, US)

I love scents that reflect a past time, and the 80’s were so much fun! I was a kid, too, with no worries and life was all about being with friends and having great times. The music was upbeat, too. My family went on a vacation that year and had a great time. We never had much money, so it was one of the only times and I still remember it, especially the crush I had on a boy I met there. Unknown Pleasures is my favorite so far from this house. Thanks for this chance, I live in the US.

  • I love Kerosene perfumes and can’t miss a chance for a sample, thanks John and CaFleurebon. I enjoyed Robert’s piercing nostalgia of summer in childhood with its endless weeks of being inside as little as possible. 1984 was one of the best summers of my life; I looked fabulous in a bathing suit, spent my nights dancing and my days around the pool, met my husband and fell in love. Lovely memories in this awful summer. I’m in the US.

  • Sound like a wonderful picnic of a nose food. I was born after ’84 but I’d love to be taken back to where i’ve never been by Pegg.
    Living in the US.
    Thanks

Sounds great! I think Summer of 84 by Kerosene is created for the people who were young, active, funny & guns in 80’s and that is why it is limited edition. In short it brings smile on face by reflecting past time lovely memories like I did while reading the review. My favorite Kerosene fragrance is Whips & Roses.
Thanks for the draw and opportunity by letting my US based relative as a mule.

  • The best part of Robert’s review is the description of summertime pleasures. 1That particular summer, I lost my virginity, and went to the Michigan State Fair. It’s a time I will never forget.

  • Loved the review. I was ahem, a little older than John in 1984 so I remember everything mentioned. That review brought up some memories! I had just moved out and was on my own. Hello MTV! Who else thought Courtney Cox was just pulled onstage? Randomly?
My favorite Keeosene fragrance is Dirty Flower Factory. Love seeing a Michigan perfumer featured! I’m in the US (in Michigan!), thanks for the draw.

  • I enjoyed reading the Robert’s blast from the past and it was fun to remember – was it really that long ago? I was 25 in ’84 and had just landed my first great job out of college (after several not-so-great jobs). I have not yet had the pleasure of wearing a Kerosene Fragrance.

This review made me think of the hot summers in Chicago. I remember one heat wave when the electricity went out all over the city. Families spent the night out, sitting and talking on the stoops of apartments. . The next day we woke to the news that over a hundred people (mainly elderly) had died because of the stifling conditions.
I remember 1984 so well. I loved all those great bands–the Smiths, the Pretenders, U2, the Alarm, Husker Du. Madonna was on the cover of Time magazine. Tina Turner was ruling the world. Good times.
I have always wanted to try Unknown Pleasures from this house (ode to Joy Division). I live in the USA.

  • 1984 makes me think of the band Duran Duran! I remember my older sister going to her first concert to see them and I was so jealous! That year just brings back memories of big hair and bold clothing styles.

I’ve never tried anything from Kerosene. Would love to win this sample!

I graduated from high school in June of ’84. My friends and I went to see Purple Rain at the drive in and it was really a bonding event for us. I was the only one into Prince, and I converted all of them that summer. I live in the Detroit area, so of course when I read about the Tigers winning, I remembered exactly where I was at that moment. It took me back to the restaurant where I was. I was peeking out of the kitchen into the bar area where all the customers and wait staff were watching the game. The roar that went up at that moment. I love Dirty Flower Factory and I buzzed through a decant of Blackmail in less than a week. Thanks for this opportunity. I live in the US.
