Hermès Hermessence Muguet Porcelaine (Jean-Claude Ellena)~Perfume Review + Ode to Spring Draw

Paul François Quinsac

It’s too early for some of us to fully celebrate Spring, thanks to our capricious weather – but that will NOT deter me from donning the very last fragrance Maître Jean-Claude Ellena created for Hermès before he passed his fragrant baton to esteemed perfumer Christine Nagel:Hermessence Muguet Porcelaine. I know it’s not yet May (the traditional timing for muguet), but I simply couldn’t wait that long, especially after my recent breakneck trip to Houston to visit my new family-to-be; everything was in bloom there, and I came home to snow. Each fiber of my beingcraved floral verdancy exquisitely underpinned with the animalic tones which contribute to both longevity and fascination. Muguet Porcelaine satisfies all such yearnings. I inundated myself in a veil of shimmering green, green as the wings of some glorious moth…

Much has been discussed/disputed regarding 2016 Hermès Hermessence Muguet Porcelaine: some say that it feels derivative, an open homage to Edmond Roudnitska’s widely-adored Diorissimo. Other voices comment that they find it generic. My feelings are those of admiration for each great perfumer’s oeuvres: why I cannot love them both seems heretical. It’s much like preferring one child over another; I possess no desire to engage in it.

Hermès Hermessence Muguet Porcelaine takes no prisoners. It’s difficult to fathom that an eau de toilette can prevail so long, remain so vibrant, vibrate after many hours’ wear – but it does. Green pours straight out of the flacon in one unfaltering stream. Limpid as an aquarelle, expressive as French chanson, touching as a billet-doux from lovers past and present.

“Quand viendra la saison nouvelle
Quand auront disparu les froids,
Tous les deux nous irons, ma belle,
Pour cueillir le muguet au bois
.” ~ Villanelle, Théophile Gautier (immortalized by Hector Berlioz in his song cycle Les Nuits d’Été)

“When the new season arises,When the chills have vanished,We shall go together, my beauty,To the woods to gather lily-of-the-valley.”

The Kiss by Silvio Allason

ROMANCE. It commences as innocence only to emerge as worldly and knowing. One may seduce via many routes, and Hermès Hermessence Muguet Porcelaine elects not to cudgel the wearer with heavy woody overdosage, an excess of musks or cypriol as appears to be in fashion recently. It does not rely upon patchouli for earthy echoes. Yet one is fully aware of the sylvan nature of muguet, those tiny cloches which flourish in shady places. To my nose it’s a madrigal made contemporary while retaining its loveliness. Modern love and courtly love bound in joyous wedlock.

Pear is frequently combined with rose, but its marriage to green notes is a real coup. Lily of the valley positively glows in the radiant presence of hedione and neroli: it’s an aromatic coronation. White musk is soft, cottony and whispers of skin. When it melds with definitively animalic hues, its olfactory profile tilts the prism and we experience other facets which growl softly beneath the floral diadem of Muguet Porcelaine. This beauty is brainy as well, and perhaps not perfectly well behaved…

Jean-Claude Ellena

In the final analysis, one must decide alone: is it beautiful? Does it give pleasure? How does it make you feel? Only you must choose. Speaking for myself, I adore Hermès Hermessence Muguet Porcelain and its expansively delightful nature. I treasure it in the context of its being the last Hermessence of Jean-Claude Ellena, its evocative lyric olfactory voice.

Notes: green notes, pear, muguet, hedione, neroli, white musk, animalic notes

Fragrance from my personal collection. My nose is my own…

I admire Jean-Claude Ellena’s creations. Unusual and extremely beautiful.
My absolute favorite from Hermes is Elixir de Merveilles. I’ll always have a backup bottle.
Muguet Porcelaine is the last Jean-Claude Ellena’s creation for Hermes and that makes it very special. The combination of pear and lily of the valley is unusual, but masterfully blended.
    Thank you for the draw.
    I’m from the EU.

  • Jean-Claude Ellena and Dominique Ropion are the best perfumeurs in the world imho 🙂 Muguet Porcelains sounds really great, especially the pear note. I live in the EU, thanks for the chance.

Modern love + courtly love. Not using the expected materials for a certain effect. Sounds lovely for spring. My favorite Ellena Hermes creation is UnnJardin Sur la Nil. I’m in California.

  • I love this: “Limpid as an aquarelle, expressive as French chanson, touching as a billet-doux from lovers past and present.” That’s beautiful writing, and this sounds like a beautiful fragrance. I live in California. I haven’t worn any Hermes Hermessence fragrances. The only Hermes I wear is Eau des Merveilles.

  • I love Hermes fragrances! All are so delicate and clean. My favorite is Sur di Nil.
    I live in Pennsylvania.

I really enjoy Elixir de Merveilles and Bel Ami Vetiver for Summer and Autumn respectively!
What an evocative review. ‘Madrigals made contemporary’ really sparks my interest, the interlocking of the classic with the modern. Thank you for the generosity of a draw! I am in the EU.

  • I love this Hèrmes and find it a beautiful perfume. I didn’t know it was Jean Claude Ellena’s last. Best Hermes perfume for me is 24 rue Fauborg and the original Doblis. Thank you for the chance

Oh no! I had no idea that this was Ellena’s last perfume either. I really love Un Jardin Sur le Toit, also by Ellena. It’s one of my favorites, not just of Hermes, but of all the perfumes that I’ve tried.

And, not surprisingly, lily of the valley is one of my favorite notes. I think you captured it beautifully by saying that it arrives with innocence, and emerges as worldly and knowing. It seems to have a certain sweetness to me, and a delicacy, that I really love.

Thanks for the draw! I live in the US.

I’m from Albuquerque NM in the USA. I like the description of the fragrance. Has an interesting note breakdown. Only really sampled a few Hermes fragrances at Sephora. I like Eau d’Orange verte out of the few they had.

Of Hermes, I have worn L’Ambre des Merveilles and vintage Caleche. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the USA

  • I love love love Muguet Porcelaine; it is beyond doubt my favorite Hermessence. I enjoyed the review’s comparison to an aquarelle — very apt. No need to enter me in the draw, I have a bottle and prefer to let someone else Now I can’t wait to pull it out again!

  • I loooove lily of the valley…and I dont have any hermes frags so it would be so nice to try this one!

For some reason, LOTV reminds me of my first five years of life on this Earth when I lived in Romania. Now, being in the southern hemisphere, we don’t experience spring like those in places where it snows. Yes there is joy at the change of season, but it isn’t as dramatic as the buds of new spring bulbs poking through the snow.

I would love to win! I am in Melbourne Australia

  • I really love all the creations of Hermes. Jean-Claude Elena is one of the best perfumers! I like Un Jardin Sur Le Nil
I really like how you combine pictures with text! That’s very beautiful!

Thank you for the chance. I from Ukraine

  • Thanks for the review!! My favourite Hermes is Terre d’Hermes… on my husband. But of course the whole line is exquisite. My favourite thing about spring is the end of winter. And the lilacs, which seem to last about 3 hours lol.

I enjoyed the reference to Diorissima in this review, an homage is always interesting both from the point of view of the original and the interpretation. Thanks for the draw — I’m in Canada. 🙂

Ida’s lovely review truly made me think of spring and all its wonders. I love a strong green fragrance, so I want to try this long-lasting one. I love Hermes Equipage.

  • Ive heard a lot of Jean Claude Elena by many reviewers. Seems he makes great fragrances. Would like to get a chance to try this one out.
Only Hermés I’ve tried is Terre d’Hermes and like it. Thanks

What a lovely review! It has made me anxious to try this fragrance!
I love lilies of the valley and Diorissima so I’ll probably adore Muguet Porcelaine! I don’t have a favorite Hermes fragrance yet. Thank you for this draw. I’m in the US.

  • Ohh hoo hoo! How delicious this sounds! Ida, you’re on a “this just smells lovely” kick! I love it!
I’m in California, USA. My favorite Hermes is 24 Faubourg. What appeals to me is how joyful this perfume sounds.

  • I’m in the US. I’m interested in this since it sounds great for the upcoming weather. I love green notes and neroli.
My fav Hermes is probably bel Ami Vetiver.

  • girasole638 says:

I love the image of the scent pouring out in a stream of green – and the bottle and cap are such a captivating shade, aren’t they?
My favorite Hermes scent of all time is the original Hiris, but my favorite Hermessence is probably Vanille Galante or Rose Ikebana. I’m in the US and would love to try Muguet Porcelaine. Thank you!
