Guerlain Idylle: Thierry Wasser’s Pygmalion + Idylle ‘Singing in the Rain’ Draw

Guerlain perfumes like Mitsouko, Shalimar and L’heure Blue and Après l’ondee have long been legendary, thanks to their classic "guerlainade" signature created in the mid-1880s by the founder, Pierre François Pascal Guerlain.

For 174 years, no one but the Company – whose in-house perfumers were all descendants – knew exactly what notes compromised this mysterious and iconic accord; most fragrance experts believe it contains Bergamot, jasmine, Bulgarian rose, orange blossom, iris, (possibly linden, lilac and vetiver), tonka bean, and vanilla according to my sources.

In his first fragrance for the House of Guerlain in 2008, ( the first non family member to be appointed as in house-perfumer) Thierry Wasser reinterpreted the guerlainade signature…amidst much speculation that he was to continue in the footsteps of the House’s tradition. Thierry Wasser created Idylle in his own image of a perfect Guerlain fragrance, not necessarily in the classic sense, and at first sniff it was somewhat of a disappointment to die-hard Guerlain aficionados.

But all things must change and Idylle may become be as timeless as its classic predecessors.  It was a fragrance fable straight out of Ovid’s Metamorphoses Pygmalion and Galatea. As August Rodin said about his famous statue of Pygmalian and Galatea, I invent nothing, I rediscover".

This is a Guerlain floral fragrance, without the dark, balsamic, powdery classic base. Yet, it can be appreciated on its own; a mist of flowers floating lightly and blissfully on the skin. Ever so delicate yet complex in its daring to be dissimilar.

Top: A bouquet of lilies of the valley, peonies, freesia, lilacs and rose.

Middle: Guerlain created a special rose blend for Idylle with Bulgarian Roses of exceptional quality that were hand-selected, one by one, by Thierry Wasser and Jean-Paul Guerlain. This Guerlain-exclusive rose blend contains hints of raspberry and litchi; it takes 750kg of roses to obtain 1kg of absolute.

Base: This reinterpretation of the signature Guerlinade base includes patchouli and white musk for added sensuality.

The Bottle:

The exquisite design of Idylle’s bottle is owed to French designer, Ora-Ito.  He drew inspiration from Guerlain’s classic fragrance bottles and re-imagined their shapes for today’s Guerlain woman.  The curves evident from every direction are meant to evoke femininity and grace, reminiscent of the curves of a female, her stiletto heels and the sensuality of the Idylle fragrance. "I wanted a fluid and sensual design, very feminine, that symbolizes a drop of perfume, a drop of love," he notes. Welcome to the 21st century! As Mark Behnke wrote welcome to the family, M. Wasser.

Now Guerlain  has  created a television commercial for Idylle, using a feminine cover for 'Singing in the Rain (made famous by Gene Kelley)

  • The only version of Idyll I have tried is the EdP.  It is very beautiful.  Not all perfumes can be like L'Heure Bleue, Mitsouko, or Shalimar.  It would be boring.  I had a couple of samples when it first came out and I found it very lovely and a great perfume for Sprig.  I sometimes have trouble with some of the flowery Guerlains.  Jardins de Bagatelle and I could not get along.  The same goes for Mahora.  Idylle is very balanced and easy to wear.  Every time I read a negative comment about Thierry Wasser, I remember that he created one of the loveliest Guerlains of the last few years: Quand Vient la Pluie.

I absolutely love Idylle. It is a clean floral mist on me that wafts softly all day, just beautiful. I have the edp, would love to try the edt.

  • huge fan of Julie Andrews…and tho I love audrey, i would've loved to see Julie in My Fair Lady!

  • Idylle is on my short list to try. The composition looks amazing. The bottle is to die for great design. What an honor for Thierry Wasser to hold first non family member as in house perfumer. Lovely read Michelyn. Could I be so lucky 😉

  • I really balked at first. I said this  is NOT a guerlainade. I have grown to like . I love the fable of Pygmalion and Galatea and figured this was a perfect scent for the fiction!!!

I wonder what Thierry Wasser was sniffing in that picture????  I am definitively a Guerlain girl, although i am not a Vintage Guerlain Girl, i can say i have definitely found love with many of the more modern Guerlain fragrances, including the L'Art et la Matiere Collection and i do love beauties like Chamade and Nahema. And then there is Apres L'Ondee……..
What a wonderful draw and as always love the pictures, they speak 1000 words.

Have yet to try Idylle it sounds delightful and perfect for spring because of the floral intensity. my favorite quote from My Fair Lady is  "The difference between a lady and a flower girl is not how she behaves, but how she is treated."

  • Courtney M.W. says:

Idylle sounds like it is the perfect, refreshing, reminder of Springtime! It sounds like the perfect scent for the coming season….which seems to be taking its time this year! Thank you for the "once in a lifetime" chance to win such a beautiful sounding fragrance!

  • Idylle appeals to me – I like a good floral scent and it sounds lovely. I always like pictures of the noses at work.
My Fair Lady – mmmm those racetrack costumes! The hats!!

  • Claudia I am not a vintage girl. my favorites are cuir beluga, chamade, mahora, nahema and bois d’armenie i like apres l’ondee and i do ador the fig/irus you can get at sephora.

  • I used to be called "Mary Poppins" in high school by the foreign-born kids who didn't realize her name was Julie Andrews. I believe this qualifies me for the draw. Merci.

  • I love the idea of someone like Thierry Wasser coming in with the nerve to do something absolutely original…never an easy thing do do…

  • I never liked the original. I have a friend who still wears it. I don't love it on her. However, the others sound interesting. The ingredients sound wonderful…..I'll give it a try.
Enjoyed the article and the visuals…..

  • I love musicals. "Singing in the rain" and "My fair lady" are two of my all time favorites. Both movies put me on a good mood.
Idylle is a perfect spring scent, so femenine and discreet… It makes me think of a sunny day. The EDT is fresher and less powdery. I loved it too.

  • Idylle came out as an EDP in 2009, and this was the year I started into perfumes.  So, Idylle was one of the first fragrances I've smelled.  I liked it then, I thought of it as an epitomy of a French floral perfume.  I love the bottle, too, it is absolutely gorgeous.
Pigmalion was one of my favorite stories.  Aphrodite, my favorite Greek goddess was at work there and allowed the dream to become true.  The art of the sculptor and the magical breath of Divine life!

  • Queen Cupcake says:

I have not tried Idylle, but am fascinated by all things Guerlain and very interested in trying this. Thierry Wasser appears to be very serious and passionate about perfume. Perhaps his status as the first non (Guerlain) family member to be appointed head in-house perfumer put some peoples' noses out of joint (pun intended). You have mentioned Singin' in the Rain, and so I must go on the hunt for Quand Vient la Pluie. Nora Arnezeder is lovely, but the commercial doesn't impress me. Gene Kelley owns the song, in my humble opinion.

  • Speaking of "idols"..Audrey Hepburn is my number one favoite actress in the entire world. She had a natural beauty like Grace Kelly and she was true to herself, no matter how flawed she may have been.
Her role in Pygmalion as Eliza Doolittle was one of the more endearing roles she played. Audrey was true to herself until the day she left us.
Thanks for writing such a thought provoking and memory inducing article!

  • When my boys were small, I'd sing "Singing in the Rain" while rinsing with the handheld shower after bathing them. It was fun for them to see an "updated" version recently on Glee.  Made this classic current (not that it needed it but Glee's take on some of the older songs helps college kids relate).

I've only dabbed Idylle from a sample and it was pretty but I'm guessing it's gorgeous when sprayed

  • It's going to take me a moment to catch my breath after that bountiful display of Guerlain bottles!  Even though it's very different from the iconic bottles of the past, I do like the shape of the Idylle bottle.
As for Thierry Wasser: It takes a very brave man to join a house that has had only family noses for 174 years! And likely tact as well as talent.
Have to agree with Elise that Julie Andrews should have gotten the part of Eliza in the film of My Fair Lady following her Broadway run. Still, it was an enjoyable film and Audrey Hepburn looked fabulous in the costumes.
I haven't worn Idylle, but a mist of flowers (especially containing lily of the valley) sounds so perfect for spring. And I can't always live up to the traditional guerlinade. Do please enter me into the draw.

  • Guerlain is a house that is well-represented in my scent wardrobe… but I have not yet tried Idylle! I am intrigued by Wasser's somewhat revolutionary idea of …tinkering with the Guerlinade base, and would absolutely LOVE to give the Idylle EDT a try. (ooh… pick me, pick me, says my inner six year old!)

  • I didn't expect to like Idylle (I'm now in the "niche discovery" phase so everything mainstream feels too… prosaic?) and I wouldn't have even tried it if it weren't for a co-worker who didn't like the sample she got at Saks (in an EDP concentration) and gave it to me. I liked it. Interesting that on two different occasions two different notes were dominant for my nose: a rose the first time and a lily-of-the-valley the second time.
I think I will end up buying a small bottle of it eventually, but please enter me into the draw.

  • I reviewed Idylle in 2009 as one of my first reviews coached by Michelyn for Fragrantica.com.
It was love at first sight, with the fragrance, Thierry Wasser and Michelyn offcourse! 🙂
Idylle is an amaaaaaazing renewing and beautiful fragrance in the great and rich Guerlain history of wonderful creations. Compared to other fragrances it is pure and has fantastic blended "matières précieuses" – which are selected in house by Thierry Wasser itself.
Idylle is a jewel of a fragrance, and the new release of Idylle Duet makes me even indulge more to smell it over and over again!
Guerlain is love, always has been and always will be!

  • I have a bottle of the EDT.  Would love to try the EDP.  I'm in love with Audrey Hepburn, so of course love My Fair Lady!  Rex Harrison is great in it, too.

  • Love Wim's comments. I also am a Guerlain fan. Idylle is one I have not yet tried but is on my very short list.
