CaFleureBon Young Perfumers Series: Cécile Zarokian + Jovoy Paris Private Label & Jul et Mad Aqua Sextius Perfume Draw

Cécile Zarokian of Cécile Zarokian Parfumeur SARL

Every generation has a changing of the guard, as new talent emerges.   One of the most enjoyable and exciting aspects of my role as Editor in Chief of CaFleureBon is shining a light on talented olfactive artists  before they become "known" to a broader audience. There is a new generation of perfumers who are making their mark, learning from the past but working for the future of fragrance.  When I thought about a series on The Next Generation: "perfumers under 40", I knew I would lead off with one of the industry's most talented independent perfumers,Cécile Zarokian of Cécile Zarokian SARL.   2011 was when I first became aware of Cécile Zarokian, who composed a perfume for Jovoy Paris' newly revamped line called Private Label.  She is an out of the box perfumer, bold and all her fragrances are beautifully composed with an edginess that is very much an expression of her willingness to explore the potential of fragrance beyond traditional boundaries. All her current and past clients are luxe and artistic perfumeries as well as home fragrance companies. It was only recently that I learned she worked with Elisabeth de Feydeau of ARTY on two of  the brand's elegant candles:L'Enfant Roi and L'Aristocrate.

(IP1-6 at the L'Atelier Galerie 2011)

In 2011, she created six fragrances with Matthieu Appriou which were a gallery of scent and illustration, unlike anything I ever seen or smelled.  We have reviewed quite a few of the 22 commercial perfumes and candles she has composed since she started her own company, including  Private Label for Jovoy (2011), Amber 1 Bougie for Jovoy Paris, Undergreen Pink 2011,  Majda Bekalli Mon Nom Est Rouge 2012, Suleko (Albho,Vy Roza,Djelem 2013 and Baba Yaga 2014) Parfums MDCI Nuit Andalouse (2013)  Labortorio Olfattivo Kashnoir (2014). At Excense, in Milan 2014,  Cécile was one of the two perfume stars (along with Bertrand Duchaufour) who seemed to be everywhere with debuts for Jul et Mad Aqua Sextius, Only for Him for Hayari and  Masque Milano Tango  .  -Michelyn Camen , Editor in Chief

ISIPICA LAB

I  was born in Marseilles and didn’t want to be a perfumer when I was little but to become a pediatrician. So I first studied medicine and iochemistry until I changed my mind. I met a friend of a friend who was ending the school ISIPCA the perfumery school founded by Jean-Jacques Guerlain in 1970, and she told me all about her Apprenticeship. I was so interested that I wanted to know more about the school, the various jobs related, and the whole perfume industry I completely didn’t know. So I start working a lot because almost everything was new to me. I always was sensitive to perfumes and smells in general, but I didn’t even know fragrance houses like Givaudan or Firmenich were commissioned by brands to create their perfumes. I definitely wanted to study all about perfume so I passed tests to start with ISIPCA. That’s how I began my training in Grasse at Robertet in 2006, where senior perfumer Daniel Maurel was my mentor. He was a great teacher, very open, and I learned a lot from him.

At the same time I was studying theoretical learning at the school and the best memories I have from there came from olfaction lessons, with perfumer Isabelle Doyen. She is one of the first independent perfumers, a wonderful person and teacher that I also admire.  After a shortwhile, my mentor trusted me to deal with briefs for clients so one day I started working on an Amouage project. I was about to finish my two years internship when I heard that I was the winner for their new fragrance Epic Woman, I was so thrilled ! I spent four years at Robertet, then there was a merger with Charabot so I knew I couldn’t stay. The timing and opportunity was right to start as an independent perfumer. That’s something I always had in mind, but maybe later to have more experience.

perfumes and candles by Cecile Zarokian

People of the industry also encouraged me to do it saying that I was young indeed, but that could be a strengh, "if you wait more you might be afraid to take risks and you might not want to give up a confortable position when you have a family". So I decided to take a shot at going out on my own and start my own company. I didn’t have any clients, I contacted some brands and it all started with François Hénin from Jovoy. He was selling Amouage in his shop and he was also working on his next Jovoy perfumes as an updated brand. That’s how I created the fragrance Private Label and the candle Ambre 1er for François. Since Jovoy is a very big perfume shop that sells a lot of brands, some of the brand owners smelled these fragrances or heard about me. So they contacted me then one client led to another.

In addition to that, I have developed an artistic project with an illustrator, Matthieu Appriou, leading to an exhibition: the objective was to correlate 6 visuals and 6 perfumes, in perfect harmony. We were part of the event “Rives de la Beauté” in Paris, then we exhibited in Dover Street in London and recently at  Esxence at the Triennale di Milano. It was a way to express my creativity away from any commercial or marketing approach, to express myself through a totally personal and artistic project. It wasn’t something a client wanted and it had nothing to do with raw materials price, sales or trends.  The thing that really matters to me is to have a real connection with my clients, to have a direct and close collaboration with them, to be on the same page. It’s not just a client/supplier relationship, it’s more a commitment where both sides are truly involved in a common project.

L’Art naît de contrainte

“Art is born because of restrictions, lives because of fights and dies because of freedom.” (André Gide )

I hear a lot of senior perfumers complaining about regulation and I completely understand them, but I must say I always knew these kind of restrictions. My generation had to learn to use some ingredients in very small amounts or to create without some others from the very beginning. In my work I only have to care about IFRA regulation, which is fine I think. As André Gide says L’Art naît de contrainte/ Art arises from restriction. Also at the same time new raw materials are offered like C02 extracts, new natural specialties coming from specific extraction methods, and new chemicals.

   cecile zarokian risign star perumer

I am asked if being a woman has hurt or helped my career. I am a perfumer in the 21st century and  being a female perfumer isn’t different from a male perfumer from my point of view. It’s more a question of a personality than a gender. Besides some physical changes and adjustments during pregnancy, maybe, the sense of smell is kind of really overwhelming at this time…

 calicebeckermaurice-roucel symrise

Calice Becker of Givaudan and Maurice Roucel of Symrise

I have great respect for the works of master and  senior perfumers such as Francis Kurkdjian, Daniela Andrier, Calice Becker, Dominique Ropion, Maurice Roucel

It sure is a lot work and I’m always learning, but I really love my job and I enjoy a lot being an independent perfumer. To be lucky to work with my clients on projects both artistic and commercial, in a close and direct collaboration, and also all the things related to entrepreneurship. I always try to do something unexpected, to balance edgy with wearable, to work on original contrasts. Companies I would love to work with? So many!  But to name a few: Serge Lutens, Frédéric Malle, Kilian, Le Labo, Diptyque, Penhaligon’s…

What would I say to a young person who wants to become a perfumer? It’s tough, many are called but few are chosen, so hang in there and be persistent!

  • Love that Cecile sees no boundaries to how far she can go in perfumery, and also that she views the current restrictions placed upon perfumers as a way to refine her craft. I’d love to try her ‘Epic Woman’ for Amouage, I’m in the US, and I wonder what advice she’d give to a not-so-young-person that wants to become a perfumer? My choic is ‘Acqua Sextius’.

  • What a wonderful idea for a series! I’m thrilled that you started with a highly successful young woman too after reading what Patricia de Nicolai went through with her own family not so long ago. The most interesting thing in this piece to me was Ms. Zarokian’s perspective on the IFRA regulations. I have heard so much doom and gloom surrounding this issue that her comment that her generation has had to work within these constraints through their whole career so it has not affected their art was both heartening and refreshing. My favorite of her fragrances that I have tried is Undergreen Pink but I would also love to try Nuit Andalouse, have heard wonderful things about it. I am in the US and would love to win Private Label.

  • I have not tried any perfume by Cecile Zarokian, sadly. I find really fascinating that she loves being on the independent side of perfumery doing some unexpected edgy thing yet she admires the great masters. It strikes me as a perfect balance.
I think Private Label is my kind of thing. I love orientals!
    Thanks!

  • I loved reading this! I agree with Nancy, Fabulous idea on a series. I personally am so excited to learn of the rising stars.. I loved that she went out on the limb to become an independent perfumer. Youth is a strength if used with wisdom from others.. Cecile I look forward to fabulous creations from you for a long time. I love Epic Woman and also Mon Nom est Rouge . CaFleureBon thanks for the opportunity to learn from this series. I am in the US and would treasure Private Label. Thanks again.

  • I have not tried any of her perfumes, but I would love to try Private Label! Her comment about being a woman not making a difference was refreshing, though I would agree with her that it would be perhaps quite different when you are pregnant (something I hadn’t though about as being a problem for female perfumers). I am in the US, thanks!

  • I love reading about people who follow their passion and take risks to achieve their dreams. Cecile’s story of starting out on her own is very inspiring indeed.
Unfortunately, I have not had a chance to try any of her works. But I would love to try Amouage Epic.

I’m in Canada and would love to win Private Label. Thanks for the draw.

  • Amouage Epic is a favorite winter fragrance of mine, but I also enjoy Mon Nom Est Rouge. Nuit Andalouse is lovely too. I love Cecile’s story, and I admire her decision to become an independent perfumer as a young woman. Her artistic collaborations sound fascinating too.

I’m in the US and I would love to try Private Label.

  • To study with Isabelle Doyen that must have been amazing ! Brava Cecile to strike out on your own at such a young age and fortuitous to meet Francois Henin who gave you projects
I have been to Jovoy on a recent trip and it is truly the most amazing perfumerie. While I was there Mr Henin guided me through so many perfumes and I left with samples to smell including private label !
I admire anyone who has an entrepreneurial spirit like Ms Zarokian who I saw in NYC at elements showcase a couple years ago and last summer too. I recognize her now
Great idea for a series btw
I would love to win Jovoy private label perfume
I will be following Ms Zarokian that is for sure

I find interesting Ms Zarokian work with art as an attempt to express her creativity beyond commercial constraints. I’d LOVE LOVE LOVE to try Nuit Andalouse and I’d love to try Private Label. I live in the US
    Thank you!

  • I am very excited to see new fragrances by Cécile Zarokian. She is an exceptional artist; medicine’s loss is our gain. I found it interesting and not surprising that she was mentored by the masterful Isabelle Doyen.

One of my favorites would have to be Mon Nom Est Rouge. Since I love the whole Jul et Mad line, I would choose the Aqua Sextius. Difficult choice!

  • I liked the quote about the IFRA restrictions, I have only tried Epic which I quite like.
I would like to win Acqua Sextius and I’m in the EU,
    ty

  • I really like Zarokian’s attitude to the IFRA restrictions. I actually get tired of all the complaining about it. I see the wisdom of Gide’s point – though I don’t think its necessarily a universal truth! I like Amouage Epic very much, live in South Africa and would most like to win Jovoy’s Private Label. Thank you!

  • meganinstmaxime says:

I think it’s great that she started out on her own straight away. Not many people are as gutsy as that. I have only tried Mon Nom est Rouge but it is one of my favorites and I have it on my to buy list (quite high up). I would love to win Private Label. Thanks for the draw.

  • From Cecile Zarokian I have tried only Nuit Andalouse which is a great gardenia fragrance. Although I am not a big fan of gardenia, I found Nuit Andalouse to be perfectly created and very balanced. I would love to try Epic Woman from Amouage which is on my list for years or Mon Nom est Rouge for I loved Pamuk’s book.

I would love to win Private Label. Thank you!

  • I am ashamed to admit that I own and love Epic Woman, and never realised that Cecile Zarokian composed the fragrance.
I would love to win Jovoy Private Label. (And visit the perfumery!)

  • I’d like to try private label as i don’ t know any of her perfumes… but i liked that she creates with joy. europe.

  • I really loved her stance on expressing her creativity away from commercial or marketing approach. I love art so I can understand why she wanted to do in that manner. When I was reading though the article on her collaboration with Matthew Appriou, I was drawn to [3], the image of Silk Road. I’d love to have a sniff of it!
I’m in the EU and I’d love to win Jovoy Private Label 🙂

  • I am so impressed with this young woman. She has amassed such an amazing portfolio and worked with such prestigious houses. I find it interesting that the IFRA restrictions don’t really bother her as she is so young in the industry and this is what she’s used to. That can be quite an advantage for her going forward. Of the ones I’ve tried my favorite fragrance by her would be MDCI Nuit Andalouse. I am in the U.S. and would love to try Aqua Sextius as I love all of Jul et Mad’s scents.

  • Nice to see such talent in young people. I do think she has created some beauties, how to choose? I know I would love the Jovoy: its such a great brand. That’s my choice for sure. Im in the US.

  • I’ve tried Amouage Epic. This is incredible perfume and I absolutely love it. I think Cecile is brilliant perfumer.
I’m in Russia and would love to win Private Label.

  • Cecile Zarokian is inspiring and I was very interested in reading about her. Although I am not familiar with her perfumes I have read her name and saw the video on Cafleurebon when her exhibit with Matthieu Appriou was in London. I have read good things about private label by Jovoy so that would be my choice .US reader

  • Well, Mlle Zarokian seems to be all over the … perfume world these days! I have only tried the grande rose of Amouage Epic Woman and I love it! Cecile Zarokian is so young that she has the real chance to become the female version of Bertrand Duchaufour or Jean-Paul Guerlain! I am eager to try Kashnoir, Tango and Acqua Sextius, which would be my scent of choice if I win!
Thank you for the draw! I am in Bulgaria, EU.

  • I loved the fact that Mrs. Cecile Zarokian believes in herself and her talent and decided to chase her dream and create her own House of perfume creations. An independent house that shows respect for the old methods and traditions of perfume making but is also looking into the future through its own creations.
For Cecile the IFRA restrictions is a way to develop her ingenuity in perfume making regarding the use of raw materials and as she puts it “Art arises from restriction” to create her own artistic masterpieces in perfumery!
I would love to try Epic Woman for Amouage very much, I live in EU (Greece) and would like to win Private Label.
Thank you for this lovely review and draw!

  • d3m0licion says:

Great article, she is ceratinly young and talented, because starting your career creating an Amouage, well that just tells you how good she is, and being trained by Isabelle Doyen is good as well. She is determined and not care being a woman in the fragrance industry she is right when she says that you only need to have a personality. I live in the US and would love to win Jovoy Private Label (which I tried before and is simply amazing)

  • Davis Brandao says:

I sitll haven’t tried any fragrance form Cecile, but no doubt I would like to try Only for Him. I gave to my wife Only for Fer two years ago, and it is still the fragrance I love when she wears. I am sure it will be a great male fragrance. What i find very interesting about her is that she is a young woman, a very beautiful woman I have to say, and she seems to be very dedicated in learning, someone that takes her job and her art very seriously. And it is great to see her working together with Jul et Mad. I had the pleasure to win a context a few months ago and was rewarded with Terraca a Saint Germain, that is a lovely. ruhbarb frag, and the couple Julien and Madelina are very kind. I really would love to try Private Labe…it is impossible to resist to a vetiver/patchouli/leather combo. I am in Rio de janeiro, Brazil.

  • julesinrose says:

I am intrigued by the fact that originally she studied to be a pediatrician! I enjoyed reading about Ms. Zarokian. Love her attitude, and am so impressed with the many truly complex and beautiful scents she has already created. My favorite thus far (though I’ve only smelled a few from tiny vials) is Majda Bekkal Mon Nom Est Rouge. I’m in the US and would LOVE to try Jovoy Private Label. Ooh!!!! Wonderful article & draw. Thank you!

  • I love her advice for aspiring perfumers and my favorite scent by her would have to be Epic Woman. I’m in the US and would love to try Acqua Sextius.

  • wefadetogray says:

The whole article is interesting. it is always good to learn more of a perfumer, what inspires them and how they got to be where they are. I find particularly interesting how Ms. Zarokian was always supported by the industry people precisely because she was young. I also find interesting her artistic collaborations. I’d love to try Epic woman and Private Label since I adore orientals.
Thanks and I am in the US

  • What a refreshingly honest story of her path to perfumer. I enjoyed hearing how she handles the restrictions so matter of fact, and with an eye on new ideas. I am only familiar with Private Label which I thought was GORGEOUS when I used my sample. At the moment, my favorite perfume is a toss up between Teo Cabanel’s Alahine or Guerlain’s Bois D’Armenie. I live in the US. thank you so much for this great draw!

  • Meeting a friend of a friend changed the course of Cecile’s life. I haven’t tried any of her fragrances but look forward to this new Aqua Sextius.
    US

  • Wonderful article. I’m blown away of the number of fragrances she has collaborated and created. Wow. Impressive. Also, interesting about the regulations. I suppose it’s a good thing she was used to them because it seems to upset so many people when designing. I live in the USA and would like Sextius. Thank you. Keep designing gorgeous scents.

  • rodelinda says:

It’s fascinating that she went from medicine to fragrance! I would choose Private Label, both as her creation that sounds the most appealing, and as my prize. Thanks.

  • The most fascinating aspect of the article for me would be the change in the career path of Cécile Zarokian, which with a dose of persistence on her part, led to a rising star on the horizon in the world of perfume.
I also share the admiration with Cecile for her mentor: Isabelle Doyen…
Not being familiar with a work of Cécile Zarokian, I would be eager to try any of her creations, bur especially Aqua Sextius
    I’m in the United States:-)

  • ringthing says:

I find it fascinating how her youth and energy inform her creative process, especially when it comes to using the materials available now and not lamenting what’s no longer attainable. Her forthrightness and forward vision. Epic Woman is the only one of her perfumes I’ve tried and it’s gorgeous. I really like the Jul et Mad perfumes so I would choose the lovedose of Aqua Sextius.

  • This sounds like an interesting new series. I found it interesting that she doesn’t feel constrained by the IFRA regulations as so many older perfumers do, who used to have access to more materials. I have tried Majda Bekalli Mon Nom Est Rouge and it was lovely, and I would like to try Undergreen Pink. I am in the US and if I won would choose the Jovoy as I love orientals.

  • I love many of her fragrances and Epic, Mon Nom Est Rouge, Kashnoir are my fav. I am little bit surprised she isn’t so worried about the restrictions… But what she could say anyway…? The most interesting part is that at Ecxense she was the main star near BD. That says it all.

I am in US and would love that bottle of Private Label. It is great.

  • Laurentiu says:

I am very curious how the artistic vision of Isabelle Doyen reflects on Cecile Zarokian’s work. I am a big fan and I enjoy very much almost anything done by Isabelle Doyen for Annick Goutal, therefore I hope I will get the opportunity to test something from her pupil, Cecile.

I would love to win any of the two prizes. I live in Eu. Thank you for this great draw!

  • freeestyler says:

Cecile is fascinating! I beautiful woman and a great parfumeur! I love reading about people who follow their passion and take risks to achieve their dreams. Cecile’s story is very inspiring indeed.
I love Amouage Epic, but thats her onyl fragrance I have been able to test so far.
I would like to win Jovoy Paris 50ml of Private Label.
    I live in Germany

  • What an inspiring character! It was heart-warming to hear her attitude expressed over the parfumeurs in the industry particularly as a woman being unrestrained by gender. I did not know before that Cecile won the competition to create Amouage Epic at such an early stage in her career at the end of a two year internship. Epic is my favourite, although only, scent by her that I have had the pleasure of experiencing and would be excited to try another.

I would love to win either prize. Thank you for the draw. I live in Australia.

  • Fazal Cheema says:

I would love to meet Cecile in person one day..so many epic creations in such a young career such as Epic Woman, Mon Nom Est Rouge, and Baba Yaga. It’s amazing how a shop like Jovoy has been quite instrumental in giving her courage and making it possible to become an independent perfumer. My choice will be Jovoy Paris Private Label and I am in the US

  • Cecile’s choice of words at the closing, “Many are called few are chosen”. I like that.

I would like to try this new one, Aqua Sextius. 🙂 USA

  • Dying to try Aqua Sextius, only for him by Hayari, tango from Masque Milano, nuit andalouse, and whole SULÈKÒ line… lol.

Epic Woman is smashing and I adore it but also enjoy Amber Première a lot. So much talent.

If I win I would want Aqua Sextius I live in northeastern US and find it interesting is her influences and teachers and her unique way of looking at art and not letting IFRA regs or anything else hinder her process. Wonderful

  • I think its impressive that she has worked with Amouage, as I find them to be a very solid company with many great offerings. Would love to try the oriental scent Private Label. Thank you very much.
I live in the USA. Greg

  • I agree with Cecile that gender shouldn’t matter in the perfume world by this point in time, and I have also experienced the change that pregnancy causes in one’s sense of smell. It is fascinating indeed. I’ve very much wanted to try her Jovoy Private Label, and that is the one I would choose. I’m in the U.S.

  • What a talent! I also love the sense of fearlessness and confidence that comes through in the interview. I adore Mon Nom est Rouge and Epic Woman. Both are just amazing to me. I live in the US and I would love to try Aqua Sextius. Thanks for the draw!

  • Restrictions, restriction. Good grief. I’m sure it will only get worse. Glad she is used to it and it doesn’t bother her. Amazing amount of fragrances she has had her hand in. Unreal and they are all excellent. All the more reason I want to try these. Aqua Sextius should fit nicely on my shelf. In the USA. Thanks for the draw.

  • I find it interesting that Cecile learned the perfumery trade with many of the new restrictions in place.I wonder if this has made her more adept at creating with a more limited palette.I enjoy her fragrances and own Mon Nom set Rouge. It is a fantastic scent and enjoys many similarities with her Epic Woman for Amouage.I would love to win Private Label. Thanks for the draw!

  • I adore Amouage Epic (own a full bottle) and the new Nuit Andalouse is lovely. I’d really like to try Mon Nome est Rouge and Baba Yaga as well. If I win i’d love Private Label.

  • I found it remarkable that, at such a young age, Cecile created such a bold and unforgettable fragrance like Epic Woman. Her independence and ability to take IFRA restrictions in stride impress me. I have tried Nuit Andalouse and love it.

Thanks for the generous draw! Would be thrilled to win Private Label and try Jul et Mad Aqua Sextius. I live in the U.S.

  • i love her persistence and courage about creating her own perfume company. usually young perfumers wait a while until they generate a large following before doing so. She is very optimistic about the IFRA regulations. while others complain and consider it the doom and gloom she has the attitude of making lemonade out of lemons and i admire that! i would live to win private label. i live in the us and thanks for the draw.

  • Carole Fallon says:

What a wonderfully balanced life and perfume view Ms Cecile has! I expect to hear more and more about her work. I would love to try Epic Woman to start, and explore her other work as I can find it. I am in the US and would love to win Private Label.

  • I like that she has the confidence and curiosity to follow her dreams and go for what she wants. She seems completely of the 21st century in her attitudes and style. I would like to try Nuit Andalouse and if chosen, I would love the 5ml of Aqua Sextius. I live in the US.

  • I only can admire the confidence and determination of Ms Cecile.
And, no doubt, her real talent.
It is not little thing to work on Amouage perfumes.
And having the chance (I would rather say: having the talent and power to convince) a major client like Jovoy, made a great opening in her self-standing career.
I am happy to learn that the wonderful Nuit Andalouse from MDCI and the Suleko line and a few Jul et Mad perfumes are her work.
Looking forward to hear about more successes Ms Cecile!
I would like to win the Jovoy Private Label… But I won’t refuse the Aqua Sextius, either 🙂
    Thank you for the draw

  • She tells the story of becoming a professional perfumer as if it is the most natural thing in the world. What an elusive dream it is for so many people though… and I suspect for many of the readers of Cafleurebon, including me.

I don’t think I have ever tried a perfume she miss Zarokian has created but Nuit Andalouse has been on my to do list along with the rest of MDCI line and also Undergreen’s Pink.
my choice should I win would be Jovoy Paris Private Label

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

What I found fascinating about Cécile Zarokian as a next generation star in fragrance is that she is considered edgy and thinks out-of-the-box with her creations. I really want to try her winning Epic Woman and my choice of perfume would be Private Label for Jovoy. I live in the US
