June 14, 2014, perfumer Maggie Mahboubian collected a good representation of Indie perfumers for the second annual FRAGments underground and artisan perfume show in Los Angeles. I was unable to attend, but  based on Guest Contributor Stevie Wilson's Event Report , it seems like a fine time was had by all, and I was lucky to receive a package of assorted offerings from the perfumers in attendance. Most of the vendors were artists well-known to me,  to ÇaFleureBon and to our readers, like Ellen Covey of Olympic Orchids, Mario Gomez of Mario Tomas, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz of DSH Perfumes (how I would have loved to meet her!), and her protégé, the 2014 Art and Olfaction award winning Amber Jobin of Aether Arts, among others. But as I perused the samples, I realized that though a name was familiar, maybe the perfumes were some I only smelled briefly or not at all. I decided to just tease you with an example from some of these collections.

Of course, one of the perfumes would have to be from the show’s hostess, Maggie Mahboubian of Lalun Naturals. I received a sample of her Phenomene Verte II, a new version of her Phenomene Verte containing "felted botanicals" which was part of her "Touch Me" Installation. Phenomene Verte II is a complex natural scent that has a sunny, warm center surrounded by herbs and flowers. I visualized a complex nest made of a variety of twigs and herbs and blossoms, with a golden, pulsing orb in the center, glowing softly. Maggie both grows and wildcrafts plants for her own tinctures, which gives her fragrances a distinct personality.

Notes: Artemisia californica tincture, Yarrow tincture, Lime Leaf tincture, Jasmine grandiflorum tincture, Bay Leaf tincture, Rosemary tincture, Thyme tincture,Amber accord, Vetiver, Lavender absolute, Labdanum

FRAGments perfume jules et jim afleurebon

Still from "Jules et Jim" by Francois Truffaut

Heather Kaufman’s brand, Jolie Laide, has perfumes named after French movies, and Jules et Jim, one of the more famous French films, is also a good jumping-off place to inspire perfume. Oakmoss is the basis for a woody fragrance that is great for a walk in the Great Outdoors. It’s a cozy, intimate scent, with a soft mossy drydown, and is all-natural. If you like scenting your scarves when you go strolling to watch teh seasons change, Jules et Jim would be a good one.

Notes include: coumarin, oak moss, lavender absolute, bergamot

FRAGments white tara love goddess cafleurebon

Goddess White Tara poster

I had heard about Libby Patterson Organics, but hadn’t tried any fragrances. As a fan of orange and orange blossom, naturally I gravitated to White Tara Love Goddess, which is nicely loaded up with those aromas. Juicy bright orange essence with orange blossom and jasmine bloom on the skin, with orange essence at center stage. The juiciness warms up a bit toward the drydown, but never loses that sweet orange aroma. The combination of these ingredients may seem simple, but achieving that kind of airiness in a natural perfume is difficult. This one is transparent and lovely, and I’m impressed.

Notes: citrus, sweet orange, orange flower absolute, jasmine sambac, jasmine grandiflorum and benzoin resinoid

This is just a taste of the excellent craftsmanship represented at FRAGments. I hope Maggie keeps this up and I can go next year.

My samples were provided by Maggie Mahboubian – my thanks to all the perfumers!

  • I am familiar with several of these wonderful perfumers but not Libby Paterson’s work. I would love to try White Tara Love Goddess. The name alone is alluring and add to that orange in it’s many forms and I am tempted all over again!
    US Reader.
    Thank you!

  • i have said before THIS is the show i would love to attend!

i have actually never heard of Libby Patterson, somehow… thank you for the tip! and as i am also a huge neroli/orange blossom, petitgrain fan- as well as having Tara(s) being one of my favorite deities — i am all on board for White Tara Love Goddess. (being a libra probably doesn’t hurt either.)

thank you, Tama, for such great coverage of FRAGments and the artists represented there & thank you Maggie for the dedication, vision and artistry you bring to the event and so much more!

Now let’s see if we can get Daniel Krasofski to sample out some of his work! 😉

    (i am in the usa.)

  • Thank you Tama to write about Fragments and the people who exhibited. And what a beautiful idea to organize Fragments. Maggie had asked me to join and I would have loved to attend as well, yet was unable to…too far for me to travel….maybe another time. It would have been sweet to meet the other, amazing perfumers in person, whom I have read so much about. As well as about Libby. I keep seeing her beautiful posts on FB of how she creates her perfumes and it so resonates with my own craft. On top of it they are natural and organic. I would love to smell her creations one day.
I would pay the shipping to Europe to be able to smell Libby’s perfume.
    Blessed Be!

  • I found the description of the White Tara Goddess appealing so that is my choice for this draw. 🙂 U.S.

  • I have been wearing more and more naturals as they really seem to trigger fewer headaches. I am not familiar with Libby Paterson so would love to try White Tara Love Goddess. I am in the US. Thanks.

  • I love reading these reports/articles about perfume shows because I get to learn about perfumers that I was unaware of. Another thing that I love in reading about these events is that there is always a sense of camaraderie within the perfumers – it seems – and that is the truest sense of people doing what they love because they love it which translates to the product of their work.

The perfume that “spoke” the most to me is Jules et Jim. Although the description is brief, the imagery I got in my head while reading the notes list after reading the outdoors preface made me want to douse myself with the perfume – that is the one I’d pick if selected in the draw.

I am in the US. Thanks for the opportunity.

  • I would choose White Tara Love Goddess because orange plus orange blossom is always a win in my book. Now I’m a little curious what “felted botanicals” are.

    I’m in the US. Thanks!

Thank you for this article. What appeals to me most is learning more about these three perfumers and three of their creations. I look forward to learning more! This is a tough choice but as I’ve been a bit obsessed with orange scents recently, I will wish for White Tara Love Goddess. I’m in the US. Thanks again.

  • What appeals to me is imagining what it must be like to meet all the perfumers at one time that are in the photo.
The notes of Jules et Jim read like it leans masculine, I will choose that one for the draw. U.S.A. ty

  • I really like the idea of fragrance events like this where I can sniff and learn more about niche perfumes and perfumers. I would pick Jules et Jim as the idea of being outside where the only sounds and smells are from nature is very appealing to me right now.

  • ringthing says:

Jules et Jim would be my choice for this generous draw, and I enjoy reading about all these talented indy perfumers – they are the best part of niche perfumery, in my opinion, truly niche. Thanks for the reviews and draw.

  • You had me at “oak moss.” I love the stories of cool perfumers hanging out. My choice would be Jolie Laide Jules et Jim…even htough I’m not ready to consider the change of seasons!

  • I love reading about indie perfumers. And I love trying their fine perfumed wares. I am familiar with Lalun Naturals perfume and body products. They are fabulous ! Can’t wait to try the new Phermonne Verte II . My choice would be Jolie Laide Jukes et Jim. I’m in the US! Thanks for the draw !

  • Fazal Cheema says:

I will go for Jules et Jim.. i have not watched it yet but i remember reading an article months ago in which this movie had been suggested as one of the top 10 romantic movies..as soon as i saw the mention of the movie being the inspiration of the fragrance, my mind went back to the article..i am in the US

  • I love hearing about companies that are unfamiliar to me. Both of the offered fragrances sound wonderful, although I think that I’d most like to try White Tara Love Goddess. I’m in the US…thanks for the draw!

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

I would choose LPO White Tara Love Goddess – one of her aphrodisiac fragrances. It sounds intoxicating, yet innocent. I enjoy reading about the niche perfumes and discovering all the different notes. Can’t wait to read your next FRAGments sample review.

  • I’d really love to try Jules et Jim. This lovely line sealed it for me: “If you like scenting your scarves when you go strolling to watch the seasons change, Jules et Jim would be a good one.” This is such a romantic notion, it appeals to me. Really great read, and thanks as well for the draw. I’m in the U.S.

  • I love hearing about these events and hopefully can attend one day. I would like to choose White Tara Love Geddess because in summer I can’t get enough orange blossom! Thanks for the description of the event and the draw!
