Fragrance Review: Estee Lauder Wood Mystique-Forbidden Fruit Syndrome + Share the Mystique Draw

Until two years ago I was convinced Estee Lauder scents were for “little old ladies”. While shopping at the men’s counter at a local department store, I caught a whiff of something dark, earthy-seductive and musky floating in the air. I followed my nose to the Lauder counter and found out it was Youth Dew!!  Upon sniffing and sampling many of the older scents (all of which are still available), like Cinnabar, Spellbound and Private Collection, it dawned on me that these had more “oomph!” than anything on the modern men’s or women’s counters today do. I was an instant convert. It dawned on me that maybe these little old ladies “know what’s up”!

When I heard Estee Lauder was releasing its very first unisex scent, I was overjoyed. As I read on, in the press release, I was CRUSHED to find out it was only to be released in the Middle East and (of course) Paris. My discontented grumblings were overheard by the SA at the Lauder counter and she did not even know about its existence, nor did her regional manager. I immediately began an online quest to have what (I thought at the time) would be the ultimate fragrance. A dear friend had a friend who picked up a bottle for her in Paris, and I bought a half an ounce from her in a split. When it arrived, I was so excited! When I sprayed it on my arm, I was impressed (for sure) but was not as thrilled as I had hoped…at least, not at first.

The fragrance arrived in mid-March, when the jonquils and tulips were giving way to the warmer late spring blossoms. Days were getting longer and temperatures higher. Wood Mystique was definitely a more “cool weather” scent, with its warmer notes, its dark intrigue, and full floriental nature which was better saved for autumn, or winter, I decided. Now that it is November, I have dug out this beauty and given it another try. It is every bit as beautiful and stunning as I had hoped it would be.

On first re-applying this to my skin, I was surrounded with an elegant and almost fierce rose de Mai distillation. Wood?! Maybe they should have called it ROSE Mystique! The top notes (listed) are peony and pink pepper. These give a softer and very sensual aspect to the roses and add even more piquancy to their sharp green stems, like the thorns that come on the rose itself. Some may find this a bit too “rough” or off-putting, but remember just because a rose pricks you does not make it is any less beautiful. As it develops, however, the barrage of rosiness subsides somewhat, as various flowers join the roses to make it a bit more balanced.

Flower Study by Jacob Marrel (1613-1681)

Rich ylang ylang keeps it warm and full, as jasmine teases you with her naughty yet playful nature. Iris, often powdery or overly metallic, is the perfect counterpoint to the heady rose as its cooler green aspects prevail, and it quiets and calms the heart with a lovely smoothness that still allows the rose to shine; but not blind you. Mimosa’s velvety sunny aroma lightens the almost oppressive rose even more until it becomes more of a leading voice in a chorus than one voice singing over the others. As all this is going on, you almost do not notice the deep and rich tones of the base as they begin to emerge and it is here that it becomes unisex.

It was almost an hour after applying this that I began to detect something more than the flowers and spice. A deep and exotic accord that was composed of patchouli, intense cedar and resinous benzoin began to rise and swirl about me, from out of nowhere. The slightly medicinal and almost smoky oud appeared, garbed in leather, reminding me of one of those swarthy and sexy scimitar-bearing warriors on horseback from The Mummy movie series. How could something so very feminine become so earthy and devastatingly masculine? THAT is, without a doubt, mystique.

The bottom line: If you like big rich floral scents that dry down oriental and mysterious smelling, as I do, you will be very happy with this. It is unisex, if you have patience with its development. Those who are not into flowers and are looking for something solely woody, incense-rich and spicy may want to look elsewhere. It is definitely more exciting and interesting than Wild Elixir or any Pleasures or Sensuous flanker released in the last five years. It is just a shame Estee Lauder did not make this a worldwide release. Was it the ultimate fragrance I had hoped it would be (from the ads and the press release)? No. Was it something worth seeking out and owning? Yes, without a doubt.

Wood Mystique is an almost niche quality fragrance from a house often looked down upon by many perfumistas and without going all heavy or “attar” on you, captures both an intense feminine sensuality and blends it with the exciting and intriguing nature of mysterious notes and aromas from far off lands. Fantasy never lives up to the reality, or so they say. That may be true, but I am more than happy to be wafting something not readily available here in the United States; and for the price (around $2 US dollars per milliliter) it pleases more than many other higher priced perfumes do. Sillage: above average. Longevity: very good.

I want to share my Wood Mystique with one lucky reader and so I am offering a 2.5mL decant as a giveaway. To be eligible leave a comment describing a perfume you had to go to great lengths to obtain or your favorite Estee Lauder fragrance. We will draw one winner on November 10, 2012.

We announce the winners only on site and on our Facebook page, so like Cafleurebon and use our RSS option…or your dream prize will be just spilled perfume.

Editor’s Note: At press time, it has come to my attention this IS, in fact, available online to US consumers for $175.00 for the 100 ml EDP via Macy’s, but I have yet to see it in stores or at the counters.

  • Estee Lauder is the keeper of the flame in perfumery. I had pretty much dismissed EL as being “old lady” dowdy, until I smelled “Beautiful” on a friend (at this point the fragrance was already over 20 years old). I consider this, along with Cinnabar, not only my 2 favorite Estee fragrances but 2 of my favorites overall. When everyone else is making sweet, watery, foody fragrances, EL keeps traditions alive. Great editorial. Thanks!

  • I once sent a college boyfriend on an afternoon long hunt for, of all things, a children’s edt which was basically orange flower water in a cute bottle. He was to have 2 days in Paris during his med school internship in Ireland and I am sure he cursed me in every language he could think of for making him traipse from one baby boutique to another looking for Planet Kid Moonwater. I still have part of a bottle and I do love it to spray my pillow at night but what was I thinking? He was in Paris! Needless to say, I ended that summer smelling of citrus blossoms but single and working to pay my long distance phone bill.

I also still really like Knowing. My friend’s mom wore it when I was a teenager.

  • Estée Lauder was the house of my teenage years – my best friend wore White Linen, I wore Knowing for a few years, then Beautiful. I can’t quite bring myself to wear them again for feeling like I’m 16 (in a bad way), but I’ll always have a soft spot for them. Bronze Goddess is my EL fave of today. I’m very intrigued by your take on Wood Mystique – thank you for the article and the draw!

  • I’ve always stayed away from Estee Lauder perfumes because of their old lady reputation, but now Wood Mystique really has me interested! Thanks for the draw.

  • Thanks for generously sharing your precious for a giveaway! I am quickly moving into old lady territory myself and the older women in my family all wore EL perfumes at one time. My favorites are Cinnabar, Private Collection and Youth Dew, esp the Tom Ford Amber Nude version.

  • I was once like you John. I also thought Estee Lauder fragrances were for the more mature ladies and were predominantly floral. My opinions have since changed.
My favourite EL fragrances are Sensuous Noir, Brasil Dream and Knowing.

    Thanks for the draw!

  • Private Collection is my fav. The long way to get a scent – vintage versions of some fragrances, it´s been constant haunt!

  • Hmm.. I don’t really have a story about a perfume I’ve gone to great lengths to obtain.. so I’ll go with my favorite Estee Lauder, which would probably be Pleasures Eau Fraiche. I haven’t really had a chance to try too many Estee Lauder fragrances. Thank you for the draw.

  • I also felt that Estee Lauder was for more mature women, until I smelled Beautiful on a friend of mind. Recently tried Sensuous and found it quite lovely.

Besides, who am I fooling, I’m a mature woman. 🙂

  • I had to go to great lengths to obtain a vintage Shalimar perfume. I now own a 80’s version and I really would want to get a hold of a 50’s version.

    Wood Mystique sound fabulous.

  • Well I understand your frustration perfectly!! Which one of us has not searched for his/hers holy grail? Mine was sometime ago when I was looking for Un fleur de Chanel that was only available in the US and Canada and I finaly got to acquire it by having a friend’s cousin to get it for me while honeymooning in US!!!

  • It’s difficult for me to buy a perfume. I think a lot before buying a full bottle. So, even though I have great hopes when I travel abroad, because I always have some perfumes to try, I come back home without them. I smell them, and even love them, but I hesitate and don’t buy them.
That happened last year when I went to New York. There were some perfumes I wanted to try, because I couldn’t find them in Spain, but in the end I wasn’t sure about paying for full bottles.

So I’ll go with my favorite Estee Lauder, which is Pleasures. It’s a great fragrance for early spring days, when the weather is still cold but the sun shines and flowers start to bloom in the countryside.

  • I grew up wearing many ELs as my mum loved them all and shared them with me. But since I must choose a favorite I wouls say Aliage. I have a vintage vial and every time I sniff it I see my mum!

  • I know Wood Mystique has been savaged in several reviews, so I’m really glad that you took the time to try it again in cool weather — thanks! I’ve always loved EL scents, and never bought into the “old lady” thinking about any of them — even Youth Dew! 🙂 My favorites do tend to be the old ones, though: Azuree, Aliage, Private Collection. I’m looking forward to trying WM, too.

  • The one perfume that I went to great lengths to
obtain was Attrape Coeur, my favorite scent!
    Thanks for the draw!

  • I have memories of the Cinnabar, as that was one scent that reminds me of my mother growing up. It was one of her favorites.

  • My fave Estee has always been Tuscany Per Donna. Would like to try the WM, thank you very much for the draw.

  • just breathe says:

My mother wore EL Pleasures when I was born and for the entire year after. This is why it is one of my favorite scents 🙂 !!

  • My favorite El is Tuberose Gardenia. I have worn them all and love them all. All the women in my family love Estee Lauder fragrances. Back in the 70s I chased Private Collection down a long road. I still keep a mini bottle on hand.
Thanks for the draw, I enjoy reading you daily.

  • Esee Lauder’s Youth Dew was my mother’s signature scent for years. I need to explore her line a bit more. Wood Mistique sounds like my kind of scent.

  • Estee Lauder fragrances do not work on me! Hate, hate, hate Youth Dew which I was told I needed to try as a newbie. Like Cinnabar on other people, not on myself. The only one I own is Sensuous, which is kind of a comfort scent for me. And yet, when I heard about Wood Mystique I wanted to try it . Just read a bad review of it the other day so I figured it was just as well I didn’t make a mission of seeking it out. After reading yours today now I really want to try it, so thanks for the draw!

  • The Estee Lauder fragrance that accompanied in the 80s for a long time was White Linen, pure and bright!

  • Love and own many EL’s. Cinnabar, Sensuous, Knowing, and Youth Dew for winter. Enjoy White Linen in powder and fragrance for summer. I am very curious about this one and would love to try.

  • My favourite Estee Lauder fragrance is “Pleasures”, because I’ve had it since I was a teenager and everytime I spray it it takes me right back down fresh, “spritzy” memory lane! Clothes I used to wear, school, old boyfriends. It’s weird how a scent can startle your memory!

  • Olga (Warum) says:

Estee Lauder is a house that works for me just fine. I have, love and wear the limited Summer edition of Bronze Goddess, I can do a little Youth Dew when I’m in the mood, and Cinnabar. Definitely Beautiful… it is too many to call one favorite.

But wait, I have a bottle of Pure White Linen and I hardly wear it at all, but this was a fragrance that was the hardest for me to get. I made a deal with myself that I will get a FB of it if I do something… something I won’t share but it was quite challenging to do at the time. I fulfilled both ends of the deal. It was my first bottle of perfume that I bought for myself – ever.

Would love to try Wood Mystique. Thanks for the draw!

  • You don’t have to enter me in the draw on this one. I just wanted to stop by and say THANK YOU for showcasing that incredibly sexy Oded Fehr. I love that man. Soooooo gorgeous!

    xoxoA

oh, and thanks for the easy multiplication today. My brain needed the rest! 😀

  • My favorite EL scent is Cinnabar. I don’t wear it often any more, but it is still one of my favorite spicy scents and perfect for Fall wearings.

  • I have tried several EL fragrances through the years. One of my favorite summertime fragrances is Pure White Linen Light Breeze. I’d love to try the Wood Mystique.

  • Of course you can find anything on the internet these days, but I went bonkers trying to find a frag from Naturistics, a drug store brand, in the late 80s. It smelled simply gorgeous on me. It was discontinued. I found it decades later on ebay, but of course it had turned and smelled horrible. Sad! My favourite EL is Knowing — I would be keen to try this one! Thanks for the draw. 🙂

  • Musette, I have to agree with you regarding Oded Fehr- Mmmm-MMM! Scrumptious!

The only EL I have is Bronze Goddess, which I use quite a bit as 9 months out of 12 its is hotter than Hades here. I do like Sensuous and Sensuous Nude as well, but not enough to buy aFB. Thanks for the draw, this sounds wonderful- I will always link this with Oded Fehr now 😉

  • Today, with internet, we don’t need to travel…but last year I found a bottle of SL’s MKK at Andorra, like 130 miles from Barcelona (my city), what a surprise!

    Thanks for the draw.

  • Six Scents’ End/Beginning. If what the brand said is true only 2000 bottles were released and tracking one years after it was released was not easy

  • My favorite EL fragrance is Amber Ylang Ylang. Hope I’m not too late for the draw! I’ve been very curious about this.
