Flappers, Proust and Christmas: Nuit de Noël by Caron + Draw

For many a perfumista, one of the most powerful "Proustian" memories is Nuit de Noel. In 1922, the scent most often associated with  Christmas was ironically created by a Jewish perfumer  and the House of Caron's founder, Ernest Daltroff, one of the most celebrated noses of the early 20th century (who, because he was a Jew, fled Nazi-occupied France in 1940, never to return).

Although evocatively named, Nuit de Noel was actually created as an homage to the Roaring 20s, with its lively celebrations and exotic escapades.  Today it is a Christmas tradition, for thousands throughout the world. "Here in Germany we celebrate and give presents on the 24th and it has become a tradition of mine to wear Nuit de Noël by Caron on this special occasion," notes Georg Wuchsa of First-in-Fragrance.com, "It is a fragrance that perfectly captures the magic and warmth of Christmas Eve."

Replete with oriental undertones, Nuit de Noel is composed of jasmine, ylang ylang, rose, iris, tuberose, sandalwood and saxon moss. The bottle itself is superb opaque glass, with a simple gold band reflecting the flapper aesthetic of the period. The case introduced the use of Galuchat – a leather made by pressing grains into the hide to create indentations) into the art of perfumery.

  • I like to wear another Caron, the fabulous Parfum Sacre,  What could be more natural for the season than a rich, sumptuous incense-infused rose?

  • well it is freezing in sweden so something warm to keep the mind from reality……that you should be out showeling snow……..goutals ambre fetiche today

  • I have never tried Cuir Beluga but I have read a lot about it and I'm pretty sure that I would like it 🙂

    I don't have only a favourite fragrance for Christmas, but many! However, if I have to say one I pick Kenzo Amour Le Parfum. The incence note is lovely and it matches my mood these days.

  • I think I am going to wear Amouage's Jubilation XXV or otherwise's the new Amouage Memoir (men's version with all the pines in it!). And of course I would love to try Cuir Beluga… Another great Guerlain for Christmas is definitely Attrape-Coeur.

  • I love Attrape Coeur.. my SOTD, but for the holidays, Byredo Pulp just makes my laugh…with its big opulence…

    I will be in Etat Libre D'Orange Noel au Balcon. This will be my third Christmas wearing this and now it means instant Holidays when I wear it. 🙂

    I enjoyed this article about Nuit de Noel, I used to love to smell it during visits to Coloniel Drug in Cambridge, Mass.  This holiday season, I've been wearing either a sandalwood/vanilla/apricot fragrance that I made, a vanilla/nutmeg/rum/orange flower body cream (egg-nog inspired), or Tea for Two by L'artisan Parfumeur.  I would love to enter the draw, thanks!

  • I have the Galuchat version of Parfum Sacre', and that is my favorite for the holiday season! Someday I hope to try Nuit de Noel.

  • Ohhhh … Theorema WOULD be nice, eh?  As a Dickens fan during the holidays, my theme is Figgy Pudding.  And, IMO no one does Fig better than Olivia Giacobetti.  PHILOSYKOS!!  Many prefer this amazing brew during the hotter months.  It is, after all,  crisp and undeniably FIG.  I like to wear my hot weather derivatives during warmer months … Amber Sultan in August, Chergui in July.  The warmth of my skin ripens these fragrances into utter heaven … but NOW, for the holidays, cedar, fig …
    But seriously, just one?  😉

    Oh, bring us a figgy pudding;
    Oh, bring us a figgy pudding;
    Oh, bring us a figgy pudding and a cup of good cheer!

  • Oh my.   My fav is Mecca Balsam now.  Just does a girl  right.   Please enter me in the draw  🙂
    Thank you.

  • Oh, that Nuit de Noel bottle . . . just to die.
    I would love to be entered in the draw, and my favorite holiday (okay, any time of the year, but now in particular) scent is Noel au Balcon. Although these last few days I've been strangely drawn to SL Un Lys.

  • I really like DSH Perfumes Gingembre, a spicy gourmand, predictable, I know.
    I'm also going through a leather phase, again. I'm really enjoying Strange Invisible Black Rosette.

  • Tolu by Ormonde Jayne works well for me during the holidays because it's soft, delicious and warming without interfering too much with the holiday smells around me.

  • My favorite fragrance to wear during the holiday season is Nicole Farhi – Homme.
    Top: Tea wood, Lime, Artemisia / Heart: White pepper, Australian snow bark (Eucalyptus pauciflora), Birch leaf / Base: White musk, Patchouli
