Fall 2014 Deborah Lippmann Nail Polish Collection: Trends and Tips from Deborah Lippmann + New York Fashion Week Draw

Deborah Lippmann

Deborah Lippmann:  Celebrity Manicurist, Founder of Deborah Lippman Nail Collection and jazz singer

For every major event in my life there was a perfume and a song. Recovering from a broken heart, I discovered Deborah Lippmann "No more Drama" a warm caramel/cocoa shade created in collaboration with Mary J.  Blige – and I have loved, worn and (hummed along) with almost every polish in her collection ever since.  I have been gifting associates and family with Deborah Lippmann Collection Happy Birthday since 2009,  and even my more conservative friends’ fall in love with this glitter polish for grownups. Most importantly, Deborah Lippmann nail polish is 5-Free (DBP, Toluene, Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin, Camphor) and cruelty-free so you can feel good about looking good.

With a degree in music, like many aspiring artists, she had a day job; Deborah Lippmann started off as a manicurist while moonlighting as a songbird by night. But she kept her day job, her “you’re not done until you’re nails are done!” credo helping her to quickly establish an A list celeb clientele, a list so long, that I will drop just a few names: Olivia Wilde, Kerry Washington, Penelope Cruz, Lupita Nyong’o and Renee Zellwegger (Just Walk Away Renee).  In case you didn’t put it together, Deborah’s love for music is behind each name of polish in her extensive collection.

After an editor from Allure anonymously sat across from her and tagged Lippmann in an article as "one of the best manicurists in the country", fashion insiders began requesting her for editorials and runway shows for award winning designers such as Narcisco Rodriguez, Zac Posen, Versace, Valentino, Balenciaga, Kate Spade, Badgley Mischka and Donna Karan.

Do you remember “The Lipstick Index”? It was a term coined by Leonard Lauder during the recession of the early 2000s. His theory was that women would splurge on lipsticks instead of expensive shoes and clothing. We have been in a recession for nearly five years, and luxury lipsticks can cost over $50 (I am looking at you Guerlain Rouge G de Guerlain), which is why so manyhave turned to nail polish as an alternative little luxury (I am not sure if it is a real phrase, but I call it the “The Nail Polish Index”). Over the past few years, it seems like a thousand nail color lines keep popping up and most of them are driven by fads and will fade into obscurity. Deborah Lippmann is who I turn to when I want to know what is fashion not a passing fad. Here are Ms. Lippmann's nail trends for Fall 2014:

Anyone can wear Nude Nail colors: Try Fashion, a not so typical taupe that flatters most skin tones (Edun 2014)

Wear Nudes: (as featured on the runway at Fall 2014 Edun, Kate Spade and Narcisco Rodriguez fashion shows): “Nudes are fantastic because they are young, fresh and playful. Anyone can wear nude! To ensure a flawless finish – be sure to treat your hands. I prep my clients by hydrating cuticles with Cuticle Oil and complete every manicure with The Cure ultra-nourishing cuticle cream”, advises Deborah.

Tone down the intricate Nail designs, stencils and airbrushing: "Nail art, if being done, is moving towards simplicity.  Minor accents as shown for the  Badgley Mischka Fall 2014 collection  look classic and elegant".

Oval shapes and Two-Toned colors (as seen at Band of Outsiders and Honor): Deborah said, "I loved the elegant oval shapes and simplistic nail art that we created throughout Fall 2014 Fashion Week. Two toned nails, like the ones I designed for Honor and Band of Outsiders, are a great way to accent bright pops of color in your wardrobe".

Tips  From Deborah Lippmann:  Find The Most Flattering Nail ColorsFor Your SkinTone

I asked Deborah to share some tips on finding a color that suits individual skin colors.  "Skin tone is generally broken down into three categories: fair, medium, and dark. All skin has either a warm or cool undertone as well. But skin is multifaceted — someone who might have light skin can still have warm, golden undertones, like a person who’s fair during the winter but tans easily during summer. Where the veins meet along the inner wrist is the perfect place to reference. It's also a great idea to compare skin tone to the person sitting next to you".

Deborah Lippmann Lullabye of Broadway works well with all skintones –  predominately silvery, shimmery taupe, with mauve-rose tones and a chrome finish- "the new way to go nude"

When you see yellow, orange, or olive undertones and veins that appear slightly greener than blue, you’re seeing indicators of warm undertones. Cool undertones will exude a bluish, purple, red, or pink sheen. If you have cool skin with a lot of red or pink, stick with hues that have blue-based or cooler undertones. If you have warm skin, then warm and golden- or yellow based tones will be very flattering.  Medium-skinned women can teeter between both warm and cool colors, but a paler shade really complements this skin type.  I suggest lavender, rose, mauve, and light blue. If you are in the mood for bold, true red is very flattering.

The rich caramel tones of Deborah Lippmann's No More Drama created with Mary J. Blige works well with tan, olive and darker skins with warm undertones (This is Michelyn's version of a nude color)

"Darker polish as well as bright and vibrant shades hold well against tan skin. The best matches will be colors with obvious yellow undertones including gold, copper, caramel, brown, and olive shades. Purple and bright coral are also classics. For nudes, medium skin tones should be wearing a more opaque, full-coverage yellow-based color such as Deborah Lippmann Fashion".

Thank you Deborah Lippmann for taking time away from your schedue and  sharing these wonderful  tips and trends for Fall 2014. It is very rare that Deborah offers giveaways, but we have a draw for one US reader. I chose the colors from the new Deborah Lippmann Collection because I am loving both; Glitter and be Gay as an accent complements all the nail colors in the New York Marquee Collection. Lullabye of Broadway is a chic updated mauvey/taupe with a chrome like finish which I believe will suit anyone and is a great updated nude you can wear to the office.

  • I watched Deborah Lippmann on HSN today! She said that neutral nails are big for Fall 2014! I love her products, and I always wear a neutral polish, so my choice would be Lullaby of Broadway. Thanks for this great draw!

  • I am a big fan of Deborah Lippmann too!
I loved reading about finding the best colors for your skin tone
I have medium skin. I love Lippmann Rolling in the Deep, which is the sexiest midnite blue color and ironically today I bought lullaby of Broadway. Gorgeous. I would love to win Glitter and Be Gay to wear with my next purchase which after seeing the picture, will be 26th Street Rag!
Thank you Ms Lippmann I love your nail polishes and would love to hear you sing

  • I have recently filed my nails into ovals and like the look. Nude colors are on my radar again. I really like them and would go with Lullaby of Broadway. I have no favorite Lippmann color yet. US

  • I love the trend for fall of two tones stopping short of the cuticle to allow second tone to pop and shine. Love the new fall color collection. My favorites are Stormy Weather, Pump up the Jam, I dreamed of you and Stairway to heaven. I would love Glitter and be Gay! Fabulous post EIC… I love keeping in the loop with trends even though I’m in the SW Desert.. 😉 Thanks for a very generous draw, Deborah Lippmann.

  • I am a Deborah Lippmann fan girl and own at least 10 of her polishes and the stripper. It is difficult to choose my favorite but this summer I wore PYT on my tips and Girls Just Want to have fun on my toes
I am going to sephora today and I have my eye on both glitter and be gay and take the A train which I will buy.
I would like to enter for Glitter and Be Gay as a back up bottle
If Deborah Lippmann is reading I wore Before he Chears all through my seperation and divorce so like you I had a polish and a song for a tough time
I like the look of oval nails and the two tone of Honor

  • I like the oval nails trend, it looks so feminine and works well on my hands. I’d love to try Lullaby of Broadway. Thanks for the great draw!

  • Jennifer Witt says:

It was great to learn about whats trending in nails! If i won I would choose Lullaby of Broadway. I live in the US.

  • I loved the info. on matching polish to skin tone. Super fun draw! Mermaid’s Dream is my favorite for summer. I would love to try Lullabye of Broadway.

  • I’m a fan! I am a nail art weenie but I love the two toned look, and it looks doable. I’ve preferred oval nails for years so I’m glad to see I’m on trend 🙂 My favorite Lippmann is a perfect rose gold that I don’t recall the name of as my daughter stole it as soon as she saw it on my nails! Lullaby on Broadway is my choice, it’s gorgeous. No More Drama is one I have to get this fall, it’s beautiful! Thanks for the generous draw and back story of this talented artist.

  • Great interview!

So glad to read the tip: Tone down the intricate Nail designs, stencils and airbrushing: “Nail art, if being done, is moving towards simplicity. I have been practicing and this makes it much easier–nail art is difficult!

Favorite color is Bad Romance, and I would love to win Glitter and Be Gay.

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

I agree with your Nail Polish Index – affordable luxury. I’m still getting used to the new longer, oval nail shape, but I love her look for Badgley Mischka Fall 2014 Take the A Train with Glitter and Be Gay. That’s the one I’d like to try. My favorite Deborah Lippmann Polish is Daytripper.

    Tweeted. https://twitter.com/hofken/status/505905805250404352

  • I’d choose Lullaby of Broadway, and I’m happy that nails are trending toward simplicity this year. Harlem Nocturne and Don’t Tell Mama are my favorites. Thanks for the drawing!

  • I really like the look of two-tone manicures. They’re clean but interesting and not too over the top. My nails are too wide to do an oval shape unfortunately!
My favorite Lippman color is Modern Love. It’s the perfect taupe lavender for my skin tone and I get compliments on it all the time. I also have Lady Is A Tramp but I’m saving that for fall/winter.
Thank you for the chance to win a new color!! I’d be thrilled with Lullaby of Broadway if chosen.

  • Thank you for the reviews and draw! I love Laughin’ to the Bank and quite a few others. Lullaby looks like a perfect nude, very useful for fall, but I think I’d choose Glitter and be Gay, because I have a couple nudes but nothing quite like that glittery kaleidoscope of color.
