Esxence 2017: Interview with NISHANE Creative Directors Mert Güzel and Murat Katran + KARAGOZ, ZENNE & HACIVAT Fragrance Draw

(L) Murat Katran and Mert Güzel of NISHANE Istanbul

When Creative Directors Mert Güzel and Murat Katran of Nishane  (nish-ANAY) Istanbul launched their 16 “Extrait de Parfum Collection” during Esxence 2015, a brand was born. In fact, the first perfume House from Istanbul garnered critical acclaim world-wide. Contributor Sebastian Jara has reviewed Spice Bazaar from the inaugural collection and Fan Your Flames, introduced at Esxence 2016 and based on the poetry of the Sufi writer Rumi.  Esxence is held annually in Milan, the largest fair in the world for artistic perfumery and there is much to absorb, to smell and with hundreds of exhibitors there are always stand-out scents and concepts. For 2017, one stand-out is the new NISHANE Shadow Play Collection which was inspired by traditional Turkish puppetry popularized during the Ottoman Period, during the 14th-16th century. The Shadow Play trilogy, all extraits de Parfums ($215 USD) are KARAGOZ, ZENNE and HACIVAT are based on three classic Turkish puppet characters.

Nishane Karagoz, Hacivat, Zenne Launch Interview @ Esxence 2017 + Full Bottle WW GIVEAWAY

Nishane is one of my favorite Houses so I asked Contributor Sebastian Jara of the YouTube Channel Looking Feeling Smelling Great, and founder of a popular Facebook Group  to interview Murat and Mert while at Esxence 2017 ( Excense is noisy so it may be difficult to hear Murat as he talks about the new collection, but as always Sebastian brings something new to all he does).-Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

  • Seems market goes back to fruity, woody and floral type of fragrances. Personally, I am a fan of oriental resiny-ambery perfumes, but not a fan of oudy fragrances and I am happy we can see less oudy fragrances nowadays.
Thanks to Sebastian for such a good interview and thanks to Cafleurebon too for the draw. If I have a chance I like to win Karagoz. Live in the US.

  • I loved the interview, I enjoyed how interested Sebastian about the story behind the scents and how he recognised the pineapple note in the second perfume, a note that both Karagoz and Hacivat share.

The puppet that would be more my character would be Hacivat but as a perfume of choice it has to be Zenne. I hope I will be lucky to try it as I am not acquainted with Nishane’s creations yet.

I am a subscriber, I am a follower on Instagram, a reader from the EU.

Thank you! Wish you al the best!

  • I am subscriber of Sebastian youtube channel.
KARAGOZ is the one that interests me the most. I loved the concept of puppet show.

    In USA.

  • GrandmaGaga says:

As always, I enjoyed Sebastian’s interview. It was exciting to see how enthusiastic Murat is about his 3 new scents and how they tie in to the characters in the traditional shadow plays of Turkey. I would like to think I am most like Zenne but perhaps I flatter myself; nevertheless, that is the one I would most like to try, as well. I am a subscriber to Sebastian’s wonderful you-tube channel as well as Cafleurebon and I am in the US.

  • Merino-Teflon says:

I am a subscriber to LFSG, and registered here, and the fave part of the video was learning about, and seeing an example of, the shadow play.

Craziness, I just ordered Bosporusz earlier tonight, having tested a sample over the week, and I already have Sultan Vetiver, I can’t say which which is my favourite, perhaps the latter to invigorate, and the former to contemplate. I’m also getting a fistful of samples of the line with the Bosporusz, so time will tell, my purchases so far have reflected the seasons we are heading towards.

Anyway, tough call between Karagoz and Hacivat for me, but…Karagoz, I am really curious as to how that plays out.

Over and out, from the UK.

  • Hello,

I am definitely Hacivat and I would love to try a fragrance made for an actor and one who seeks the artistic life.

i am a subscriber with Sebastian and I am in the U.S.

    Warm regards, elbenja

  • HACIVAT and KARAGOZ sound like something I would love to wear. I love the notes in them .

  • All of these sound incredible. I haven’t tried any fragrances from Nishane, but these are very intriguing based on the descriptions and the listed notes

I think I would like Hacivat the most, honestly. Zenne calls out to me because of the notes, but I like that black bottle. 🙂

I am subscriber of Sebastian’s channel and live in Florida in the US.

  • They are very interesting scents. Since I am from that region, I don’t see the fruity connection with the history, I would go much darker for these fragrances, but I respect their view. I would love to try them.
I live in WA state, US.

  • Sebastian seems to be very good at picking the notes in fragrance, his reaction to Hacivat makes me want to try this one.
And I relate to The Traveller.
    I am in Australia.

  • Patrick Echevarria says:

That Karagoz interests me. I trust Sebastian with his take and descriptions on each of the frag tested. Never tried any from this house so I’m eager to try all it’s offering. From San Diego here.

  • Thank you so much for this video and opportunity to win a bottle . I love the concept of shadow play what a creative person Murat and his partner at Nishane. I am very familiar with shadow play because of my back ground. I would be wonderful if I get change to win and try this new fragrance collection.
    Thanks again!

Thanks to Sebastian I can’t wait to try this line. What I like in the youtube video is the explanation of the characters, also the feelinsg that you may feel when you wear each Nishane fragrance. I found this very special. Of course my favorite is Hacivat : pineapple oakmoss and jasmine. If i win my choice will be Hacivat.
    Warm regards from France.

  • Gabriel Garcia says:

I love the concept, its so nice to be part of a launch, I hope once in a lifetime to be part of a great industry it seems. I like to try any one one of them. Also would be nice if there will be a convention like this here in las vegas.

  • Excited for these fragrances. Thanks for sharing the info Sebastian and Cafleurebon:) I love puppets. Actually was a dream job of mine to work at Jim Hensons Creatureshop. Prague, one of my favorite cities to go to is like the capital of marionettes.
Im thinking Karagoz is the one for me, as I consider myself an artist and sometime performer:)Don’t have a favorite Nishane fragrance yet but maybe one of these will take the crown:)
Thanks for this amazing opportunity. Im in the USA.

  • NiceVULady says:

Showing us the puppets and getting an idea of the puppet show was really different. Hacivat is probably more like my character, but I would really like to win the Zenne. Thanks so much for the draw. I like in the USA

  • Nice work Sebastian.I am an old subscriber of yours.I like Nishane, Karagoz sound perfect for me,I am from Romania not far from Turkia but in this moment money are far away from me))

  • Always enjoy fragrance reviews from Sebastian! He’s the BOMB! Very interesting perception of these perfumes using Turkish puppetry. I would Love to sample the HACIVAT because of the OUD… THANK YOU so much I live in the USA.

  • Jomathan Be Swift says:

I am also JBS1 .I am not sure which name I used for this, but I am registered to leave a comment .Big fan of Nishan’s Wulong Cha . The one that I would like the most would be Karagoz . Thank you always Sebastian .

  • ntabassum92 says:

I love when they showed the dolls! Wow that was so cute – I would love to see the actual play one day, the characters sound so fascinating – especially my favorite, ZENNE. My character is probably more so HACIVAT – I am more of quiet, sincere person I believe. I have never tried a Nishane Istanbul perfume but I would love to – I would love to try ZENNE most of all. I am in the US 🙂

  • Zenne for me please… Great job as always Sebastian. I love the idea of the turkish puppets… genius. Registered in all that is required and I am in the US.

  • Paulie Peanuts Aka guinea54 says:

Very interesting video.. Sebastian is always out there looking for new things to explore and shining light on new houses.. I been getting more and more interested in Middle Easter Perfume houses.. From independent houses to even clone houses.. they are producing quality stuff.. Been very impressed. Thanks for the spotlight on yet another interesting house and another generous giveaway
    Best Regards

  • Steve Taniguchi says:

I love the presentation of this video. Especially the questions and answers part with Sebastian. You did a informative video, like me really didn’t know perfumes in Turkey. My favorite one is the freshie of course for the summer season.

  • laceruffles says:

I would like to win Zenne even though HACIVAT is more like my character. I subscribe to Looking Feeling Smelling Great on youtube with my username: lace ruffles. I enjoy the interview especially when the characters of the puppets are explained and the comments Sebastian made when he smelled the perfumes. I live in Malaysia. Thanks.

  • Jale Zadeh says:

“Zenne” – sounds like a perfect fragrance for me who likes grapefruit and wild bunches of flowers. The idea of creating fragrances which hark back to the great turkish tradition of shadowplay in combination with the stock characters used is fantastic. I hope “Nishane” will become more and more popular – in politically and economically hard times under President Erdogan, creating a perfume can also be an act of rebellion.

  • Timothee kal says:

Great interview and insight on where the inspiration that boards around the fragrances came from. KARAGOZ is one I’d love to try out as the notes and “character” sound intriguing. Great interview Sebastian.

  • cardinalmind says:

Surprisingly its the Zenne that captures me now. No wonder Ms. Camen loves this one before. Good job as always Sebastian. There’s a bit of background noise yes but somehow I can still hear what he’s saying. I’m in the US.

  • Hacivat sounds really good! This house has something very exotic and oriental about it and my bet is that all the three perfumes are very good, but Hacivat sounds right up my alley! Thanks for the draw!

  • marcopietro says:

I love every kind of popular entertainment that uses puppets, shadows, silouettes, etc. In the tradition of many countries there is this kind of expression, and I appreciated the choice of Murat and Mert to be inspired by this ancient form of art. Karagoz is the character closer to me and it’s my choice in the draw.
    Thanks!

  • Hi, I’m from Italy.
The turkish puppet tradition was totally new to me, so this is a very nice peace of ethnological information to me, also!
I respect very much the work of Nishane; I think HACIVET would suit to me!
    Thank you!

  • Kenudigme1 says:

I so love the shadow play theme. I think Karagoz sounds more fitting of my liking. ..plus it holds that pineapple note / grape note. Yes! I’ve been watching Sebastian on his channel Looking Feeling Smelling great for nearly a year now and value his take on fragrances. I’ve also recently sampled 6 other fragrances by Nishane and Wulong Chai is excellent but I’m still waiting for twistedlily to send me Suede Safran, I have a feeling I’m going to like that one as well! Thanks!!!

  • Interesting concept. Would love to try Hacivet. Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this very generous giveaway.

  • I love the idea of a perfume as storytelling, and extending it to a shadowplay puppetry. KARAGOZ is probably my character but I’d have to go for the ZENNE scent – perhaps the sexy hidden side of a gruff traveller.

I am a registered reader here and I have just subscribed to Sebastian’s YouTube channel. I’m in the UK.

  • fazalcheema says:

The review made it clear Nishane has tried a different path with these three perfumes. The original Nishane creations are quite oriental while these three are refreshing as Sebastian noted. I also enjoyed the artwork that inspired the fragrances. My choice will be KARAGOZ. I am in the U.S.

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Thanks for the interview & introduction of New Nishane trilogy. This time Nishane triplet plays Turkish puppetry which reminds me TV puppet show called “UNCLE SARGAM”, when I was teen. Never tried any of Nishane fragrances but most of them are on my want list. If I win my choice is Nishane HHACIVAT.
Thanks to Nishane Instanbul for the generosity and Cafleurebon for the opportunity.

  • Pare Mercado says:

Sebastian reviews are make these fragrances very intriguing. I would be interested in hacivat. Hello from San Diego, CA.

  • I like Sebastian as an interviewer, he did ask the right questions. Based on the description, I would like HACIVAT, the puppet is interesting also. I live in Europe.

  • Thanks again for the wonderful video Sebastian, these all sound very amazing, Bieng an artist myself I would probably lean towards trying Hacivet first before the other two, the opening of the bergamot, pineapple and grapefruit just sound amazing. I live in the California desert and I bet this one would also be great for the hot summer.

  • I have never had a chance to try any of Nishane Istanbul perfume, but I have read about this brand before. Sebastian’s YouTube interview were very amusing, as always. My choice would be ZENNE. Thank you very much for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • Love this house. Fan Your Flames and Musiqa Oud are my favorite so far. Think I would like HACIVET. Spring is in the air, and it sounds like a perfect fragrance for the comming months =D

  • P.S I live in Denmark … And what can I say about Sebastian that has not already been said? Simply the best reviewer out there

  • I have been dying to try this house. Hacivet sounds the most interesting out of the three new releases. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • Hacivet sounds the most interesting out of the three new releases. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • As always nice interview!!!I think that Hacivet approaches more my character.I love refreshing fragrances and especially the note, pineapple.Ty for the draw!!!
    I live in Europe.

  • Amazing! Thanks for the review and interview. I love the sound of ZENNE, though i’m not flirtatious lol. Thanks for the draw, i’m in Canada

  • It is really hard to pick one, I know how beautiful many of the Nishane fragrances are and very unique in many ways. I love Munegu and Duftbluten, both are beautiful and smell so different from what I have…..if I had to chose one of the ones offered I think it would be Zenne becaue what woman does not want to smell like a flirtatious Beauty <3 I am in the US and thank you for this wonderful generosity!

  • I’d love to try ZENNE because of the notes ; especially rhubarb sounds interesting!
Thank you for the another great review and draw! I’m LFSG subscriber
    USA

  • Nishane has a great aesthetic, love the bold use of solid colors that hearken to Turkey. Seeing the puppets in action was a treat, and I’d have to say I see myself most as Karagoz but the perfume Zenne lures me with her rhubarb.

I’m in the USA, thanks for introducing me to this line of olfactive art.

  • concertslover says:

As always, Sebastian does enjoyable videos and video interviews. Nishane seems like a very interesting person, and his creativity is certainly displayed in his fragrances. Of the three I would love to try the KARAGOZ ‘Black Eye’
I have never had the opportunity to try his fragrances yet, only read about them,
    From the USA
KARAGOZ is the fragrance I would like to sample.

  • Great video Sebastian I loved watching the puppet show too
I have Afrikan Olifant and Bosporouz these sound unique
    Hacivet or zenne
    From Europe

  • Informative interview, I see Nishane are trying different things. Based on that, I think I would like HACIVAT the most and the puppets are interesting also. I live in Europe.

  • Iphigenia says:

    Lovely video from Sebastian, bravo!
I really enjoyed watching puppet show with Karagoz since in my country we are accustomed from childhood to watch Karagoz puppet show and he is a favourite figure!
I am more for Zenne and I also find really appealing the notes of this perfume!
I am a registered reader living in EU, Greece. I have registered in Instagram sites too. Thank you for the lovely review and draw as well.

  • I like the concept, ZENNE would be my choice because of the bright grapefruit opening. Haven’t tried anything from Nishane.
    Thanks! I live in Europe

  • JCIMS1611 says:

Thanks for the giveaway. I’m in the US and a subscriber to Sebastian channel.

I’m really interested in KARAGOZ. While I’m not a hipster as mentioned for KARAGOZ 🙂 it does sound more my style. Unfortunately, I have not tried any from the house yet Fan my Flames is one that peeked my interest.

    Thanks for the draw.

  • I have smelled ZENNE just for a moment in Esxence, there was too many things to smell and it’s a pitty I forgot my favourite of the 3 new ones, but Iremember it was ZENNE the one I liked the most. Hundred Silent Ways was also lovely, I remember this one, but I feel now I would like to have a whole sample set to discover in calm at home 😉
    I am in Europe.
    Thanks for the draw.

  • Pathfinder says:

Originated form Greece shadow playing was part of my childhood. We grew up with the tales of karagoz but sorry for that my old friend I have fallen in love with Hacivat and his mesmerising little description! Good luck to everyone, thank you Sebastian for providing us with this chance.
    Casting my magic luck spell!

  • I simply adore Nishane and their creations. My most favorite is Suede et Safran, but I also love Patchouli Kozha. I enjoyed the whole interview because this was the first time I was able to see and listen to Murat. Sebastian does such a good job with asking the right questions and keeps the interview so alive. 🙂 My favorite one from the new collection is Karagoz.
    I’m located in Colorado, USA.

    Thank you! 🙂

  • Musonda Mwewa says:

I would like to win, HACIVAT.

I think Karagoz is more in line in with my character, being bright(pineapple) yet dark at the same time.

Unfortunately, I have never tried a Mistake Istanbul fragrance.

    I live in USA

    Thanks

  • Shadow play is an amazing concept. I have really been into pineapple notes as of lately and I love Sebastian channel since he always gives a very good explanation about the perfumes he talks about and the people he interviews. I would love to get Karagoz and see how it would play out. Thanks. I live in Seattle,WA, USA

  • Sebastian is very good at explaining these scents. I had some trouble picking a character, at first I thought Zenne because it shows a woman, but I don’t consider myself a flirt so then I looked more at the notes of each and chose Karagon. I have never tried any scents from this house, but would love to give them a chance. I live in the Central US, thanks for the giveaway!

  • tulipbuzz says:

This video was great because it felt intimate. The design was well executed as it is really hard to choose. The puppets are a great inspiration. I would choose Zenne based on notes and personality. I have never tried Nishane Istanbul and I live in the USA

  • andrei.np says:

    I live in Romania.

Every video from Sebastian is fun to watch as he is sincere and really focuses on what’s important in a fragrance. In this video it was nice to see the person behind the line, and to see the ideas and the thought process that went towards creating the fragrances.

Based on the notes, I think the fragrance I would more likely like is Karagoz, but based on the puppet, I’m more of a Hacivat. 😀
I haven’t tried anything from the line. Would love to, though!

  • I would like to win the Karagoz extrait de parfum considering the notes.
What I liked about the video was the story behind the perfumes. It is always interesting to see new ideas.
If I had to choose a puppet, it would probably be the girl, Zenne.
I’ve never tried a Nishane perfume, so I cannot choose a favorite.
    I’m from Romania.

  • beingcrystal says:

I enjoyed the explanation on which characters the scents have been based on in this video! And of course I relate to Zenne the most, also based on the note profile. I am a subscriber of Seb’s channel, and I am from the EU.

  • beingcrystal says:

And I don’t have a favorite Nishane fragrance yet, I have only ever tried Munegu. The performance is EXCELLENT and I am looking forward to own Zenne!

  • Thanks for the interview, Seb. It’s great to see how the morph the traditional Turkish culture to the modern perfumery.

I can relate to Hacivat the most, and no surprise that scent is the most attractive to me as well. From older releases Tuberoza and Fan your flames are favourites for me.

    Keep on creating, guys! 🙂

    I’m in Europe.

  • WaltherP99 says:

Own and love Fan Your Flames and Pasion Choco.PC is by FAR the best from one brand imo.I’ll have to check the new ones.
Long time subsciber for Sebastian’s videos-since his old chanel “Man Love Cologne”.
Love his honesty and the fact his not afraid to bash some fragrances if he hates something about them.

  • Bubeto_GG says:

I own small decant of Ambra Calabria and i’ve smelled Fan Your Flames – both are fantastic . Zenne sound like a winner too.
Sebastian is a great reviewer.Interview was very nice with the nice story behind the perfumes and the new bottles too.
Virginia USA (95% of the time) and from time to time London.

  • I liked video and Sebastian style of explanation- simply, but very enthusiastically.
I would like to test all Nishane fragrances, but now I prefere Hacivat.
I hope Hacivat is great as another pineapple fragrance- Aventus for Him Creed.
Mostly in Armenia, but also USA, UK.

  • giorgia.tube says:

I loved the video just liked any other Sebastian’s ones because he’s so passionate about what he does, he’s also very detailed into explaining smells and I like the fact that we have similar tastes, especially for strong, balsamic and leathery perfumes that usually wouldn’t fit a 19 years old girl.

I would like to have you pick out the best perfume for me, based on the fact that I love gripping, intoxicated scents like saffron, smoke and wood that are not too fruity or sweet, and I think HACIVAT would probably be the best.

I’m a perfume lover and collector who’s in love with Arabic colognes so I think this one cannot be missed in my collection

    I’m from Italy
