Chandler Burr Debuts the Untitled Series on OpenSky.com: Rethinking Perfume

Would you buy a fragrance without knowing its name, brand or seeing its packaging. Opensky.com and Chandler Burr think you will and will debut a new concept that will challenge you to do just that.

Chandler Burr, the Curator of The Department of Olfactory Art at New York's Museum of Arts and Design, the scent editor for GQ magazine and the former scent critic for The New York Times, is creating a project on OpenSky called the Untitled Series.

On the 1st of every month Chandler will choose a perfume that’s already on the market – some famous and some from niche collections (click here for Chandler's video). From this scent, he will remove all marketing — no bottle, no package, no brand, no name and will put the scent in a 50ml lab bottle – allowing you to experience these scent works as scent and nothing else. He will give shoppers only the guidance of his carefully chosen words to understand each and determine if the fragrance is right for them. His goal is to both enable and encourage shoppers to rethink perfume as a work of art, free from all visual cues and marketing. Scents include those from the late 19th century to last week, mainstream to niche, by the greatest perfumers in the world.

The first fragrance called S01E01 (Season One Episode One) and will launch this Friday, June 1st on OpenSky and the identity of the scent as well as more about the artist who created it will be revealed to shoppers on the last day of June. The series will continue with a new launch on the first of every month and a subsequent reveal on the last day of each month. There will be only 100 bottles available in the series this month, followed by a limited number to follow.

  • This is such a cool concept!

It will be interesting to see how it progresses. Will there be an online discussion about it (or perhaps that completely defeats the purpose)?

It’s a shame that they won’t do smaller, 5ml versions for the perfumista community at a higher quantity. It would have been fun!

  • Hmmm … In theory, it’s a cool concept. However, doesn’t the fact that these are exclusive, curated, and probably very expensive somewhat defeat the ostensible purpose of debunking the hype surrounding perfume?

  • I agree with the decant size option. I can’t buy 50 ml of perfume each month, but I’d love to participate.

I love the removal of marketing, packaging, and drug store vs. departmaent store vs. niche expectations, just perfume as art.

  • Since it is an ecommerce site, I don’t think they would go for the smaller size? I think there will be both mainstream and niche scents, because the point will be not to factor in the marketing and bottle cost and Chandler has never been a scent snob. Will try to get some more info for everyone…and perhaps some new information from Chandler himself
For those of us who remember his NYT column and scent dinners it will be fun to guess each month’s episode

  • hmm……interesting but strange. I look forward to learning more. Thanks for the article!

Love the idea! I’m definitely buying at least one, probably no.9 as it’s my lucky number 🙂 Thank you for this article.

  • How very very awesome! 😀

I have been saying (for years now) that perfume bottles, ads, etc. are great; but people should just judge perfume on the “jus” and none of the “window dressing”! 😉

LOVE this idea. Many perfumes that folks turn up their noses to (all puns intended!) may have been more well received if they were just judging on the perfume itself!!

    Kudos Mr. Burr…KUDOS!!

I just ordered my first bottle and it was most definitely affordable on my tight budget. I just love the idea of taking away the window dressing and preconceived notions (based on name, bottle, perfumer, where it is sold, etc) and just enjoying, as John said , the “jus”. I will definitely be buying more as they come along each month as long as the price is relatively reasonable!
