CaFleureBon Young Perfumers Series: Yann Vasnier (Sr Perfumer at Givaudan) + Divine Parfums and Parfums DelRae Fragrance Draw

yann vasnier sr perfumer givadaun

Yann Vasnier Senior Perfumer for Givaduan

When I think of a perfumer whose star continues to ascend,  Yann Vasnier immediately comes to mind. I believe I was the first journalist to write an in-depth interview with Yann in 2009. I remember he told me that his parents were so proud. Now it is our turn to be proud, as we feature the extremely gifted Yann Vasnier, Senior Perfumer at Givaudan in our Young Perfumers Series. Yann has created great commercial successes (for example his collaboration with Calice Becker on the FiFi award winning  Lola by Marc Jacobs), cult favorites for Comme des Garcons, Divine Paris, Le Labo, Keiko Mecheri, Parfums DelRae and Arquiste Parfumeur to name just a few of his outstanding accomplishments.* One of the many things I admire about Yann is that he brings a niche aesthetic to commercial scents and achieves balance between pleasing many and bringing something new to every composition. His work for small artistic brands, such as Divine, Arquiste Parfumeur and Parfums DelRae is always exciting and highly anticipated.  I may have danced the Tango with Maurice Roucel, but clubbing at Output in Williamsburg with Yann Vasnier is still on my bucket list. –Michelyn Camen, Editor-In-Chief

yann vasnier as a child

Yann as a young boy

I grew up in Rennes, Brittany, (western France) and lived there until I was 19 years old.  I am the youngest of three children- all brothers. Both of my parents….. love, love, love their garden, which is part of the house where they live  and was  previously owned by the Thabor garden director, the famous park in Rennes, landscaped by the Buhler brothers in the 19th century. So my parents inherited a great collection of more than 100 species of roses, lots of espalier fruit trees, magnolias, and two greenhouses with grapes. They added a vegetable garden, lots of flowers and a ‘rocaille’ designed by my brother. I have so many scent memories and they are very much tied to being a Breton.

The scent memories of my youth; the aromas of salt, butter, crepes, caramel, and homemade fruit jams that I loved. When I close my eyes I can still smell roses, long grey days of rain, the aromas of the rocky salty coasts of Cote d'Emeraude, the sandy beaches (my favorite is Plage des Chevrets).  Brittany is cow and pig country, so the odor of manure is always in the air.  As a young boy, on special glorious days, Chanel 19 and Chanel pour Monsieur, which was always used sparingly. Perhaps so much sensory overload as a child paved the way for me to become a perfumer.

My interest in fragrance began at 12 years old. In Dinard, on the coast, where my family had a house, I would always stop by the Divine perfume house, talk to Yvon Mouchel, (with whom I still work with today); he would sell all the Serge Lutens, the Annick Goutal fragrances and all the niche fragrances of the day. I was always spending my money on perfume, especially Chanel. I was fascinated by her, the brand and Karl Lagerfeld. A great moment for me was about a year ago when I toured Mademoiselle's home on 31 Rue Cambon.

I seriously looked for a way to come into the fragrance industry, focusing on studies in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics, Baccalaureat serie C with honors, then the Classe Reparatoires aux Grandes Ecoles, a prep course with the main goal of training undergraduate students for enrollment to the very competitive national exam.
To show my interest, I had worked during these two years on a catalog of more than 3000 fragrances with their name, their Brand, date of creation, olfactive family, descriptions, ingredients and perfumer.

After the exam in Chemistry, olfaction, English, interviews with industry people, I was hired by Quest International in September 1996 and finally accepted at ISIPCA. I just had worked a summer job at L'Oreal, and was helping my brother Mikaël, a space engineer, finish his thesis in fluid dynamics for the aerosol lab.  I was one of the three men out of 15 in the perfumery division. ISIPCA was definitely the best time for me. I was a student, independent, I had my own apartment, a car, was employed and studying what I always had loved; what more could a young man want?

At Quest I was under the wing of Francoise Caron for the Perfumery part, Jacques Vaillant, Directeur Technique, for my time at Quality control, and Yves de Chiris and Ineke Ruhland for marketing. I also worked with Christine Nagel, Francis Kurkdjian, Chris Sheldrake on some Serge Lutens projects, and Gilles Romey. While I was in school, my classmates were some very talented people: Violaine Collas now at Mane Paris, Émilie Bouge now at Charabot on Grasse, SophieTruitard at Mane Brasil, and Pierre Gueros now in Dubaï for Symrise. Also, Ineke Ruhland of inEke Perfumes and Carla Chabert.

I finished my first project in 1999, an APC candle called Tumbac.  My first fragrance was for Comme des Garcons Palisander Red Series 2. I was so proud I did it in only one try! They asked me to modify it, but we kept coming back to the original…twelve ingredients and still a wonderful addictive fragrance. In 2001, I worked on another Commes de Garcons- Red Rose with my mentor Francoise Caron. It all came full circle when I created and still create all the perfumes for Divine, a favorite being L’homme de cœur with such a rich Iris, so many brands try to emulate.

I joined Givaudan, when they bought Quest in 2007, and this gave me and a lot of my colleagues, such great opportunities. Givaudan allows us time to work on smaller brands and less commercial projects; they really understand we need this breath of fresh air.  Sometimes, people ask me why I don’t start up my own brand and work independently. Although many of us dream of it, at the end of the day, it's a different job. It is not for me, because I love to work on something different every day.  It would be talking about the same product with enthusiasm and passion every day. I wouldn't really see myself singing the same hit songs for 30 years or playing the same part every night on Broadway!

I am 37 and was part of the changing of the guard.  Every generation says, “Things aren’t the same anymore, the industry isn’t the same”. I remember smoking in my office, celebrating every single new fragrance with extravagant gifts, dinners and champagne, smelling and tasting civet, and other animal products. I remember when big designer brands were launching daring fragrances. I miss these days; I hope they will come back. The future is bright although these wonderful times have past; I still am the most excited just after the briefing, when I start my ideas, bold, strong, hopeful, before days and months and sometimes years of polishing all the rough edges away…

Francoise Caron

The perfumers I admire the most?  Francoise Caron will always be on top of my list, all my dear friends at Givaudan, Michel Almeirac, Jean-Claude Ellena, Christine Nagel, Chris Sheldrake. I'm really excited to see what is going to happen at Chanel with Olivier Polge.

marc jacobs bang

Marc Jacobs Bang a Collaboration between Yann Vasnier and Ann Gottlieb

When I am interviewed or speak with people outside the fragrance industry they ask, “How can you take risks composing mainstream scents?"   Perfumers usually don't decide these things alone, the evaluation screens first, and it is up to the client at the end. A good example is my beloved baby, Bang, which I wish had had more success, because this fragrance really does achieve a balance between edgy and wearable.

Yann, Carlos, Sophie Bensamou and Rodrigo

(L) Yann Vasnier, Carlos Huber of Arquiste, Sophie Bensamou (now with Symrise) and Perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux

Since you asked me to write about some of my favorite clients, here are a few thoughts about them that spontaneously come to mind. Yvon Mouchel, Creative Director for Divine: Finest man, chicest brand. DelRae Roth of Parfums DelRae: So refined and with such exquisite sensibilities. Carlos Huber, Creative Director of Arquiste: a dear friend with great ideas. Mark Knitowski, Vice President, Fragrance & Product innovation for Victoria’s Secrets Beauty is one of my best US clients. Karin Khoury, Senior Vice President, Corporate Fragrance Development Worldwide: Such a visionary with great finesse. Trudi Loren, SVP, Corporate Fragrance Development at The Estee Lauder Companies: always beautiful, smart, a dear friend from the Quest days. Ann Gottlieb: What can I say… she is an icon and with true knowledge of the consumer.

Another question I get is about IFRA regulations. Replacing galaxolide, tonalid, oak and tree mosses was part of my job when I started, for the new products we definitely can play around but it's quite sad to destroy all the great classic perfumes.

If you are a young person and want to become a perfumer, I say, “Good luck, go for it, it definitely can be tough but this is worth it, this is an incredible career". I wish one or more of my nephews or nieces would follow my steps and keep the Breton/Normand name Vasnier in perfumery, they seem already have some potential in that field. Even if the golden days are over!

  • I just bouht Parfums DelRae Wit so i enjoyed knowing about the perfume “nose” behind this lovely perfume.

  • Wow — Yann Vasnier looks just like a young Jean-Louis Trintagnant! I didn’t know he was the nose behind Divine by divine — which I adore.

  • I found it fascinating how he worked closed to many perfumers who to this day share the same success. My favorite Yann Vasniet perfume would probably have to be Santal Blush by Tom Ford. I have quite a few created by him, and that is the only one I did not buy (A friend gifted me it) and due to that Santal Blush holds a special place among his creations.

I live in the USA and would treasure a bottle of DIVINE L’HOMME DE CŒUR.

  • FearsMice says:

So many of us are accustomed to thinking of perfume as art that we forget that hard science goes into it, too. I admire M. Vasnier’s dedication to physics, chemistry, and math — it’s impressive that he helped out his engineer brother with fluid dynamics in the thesis! I really like Divine’s L’etre aime for women and Delrae’s Mythique. I wish I had smelled Bang! before it disappeared, too. If I win I think I’d choose Divine’s L’homme de coeur — I haven’t even smelled it yet, but the iris sounds so good! I’m in the US; thanks for the draw.

  • Fascinating personality and story. It is admirable that he is true to himself and followed his dream. There are so many fragrances created by him that I love. All so different. He has a huge talent.
Aldehyde 44, Mythique are unique. Even the mainstream ones are interesting. Bang, Adam Levine, DK Gold.
I would love to try Divine’s L’homme de coeur and that is my choice for the draw. I adore iris.
I’m in the US, great draw.

  • ringthing says:

What a great read! I’m fascinated by M. Vasnier’s singleness of purpose in pursuing his chosen career path, laying the groundwork by taking the right math and science courses in school and meeting the right people. Collecting Chanel perfumes at such a young age! I’m a big fan of Marc Jacobs Bang – my husband and I both wear it – and Donna Karan Gold is on my top ten. This is a wonderful draw; I would choose L’etre Ame for her. I’m in the US.

  • Fabulous article. DelRae Wit would be my favorite perfume created by Yann.
I live in the U.S.and would like to win Parfums DelRae. Thanks for the draw.

  • I was very taken by his enthusiasm for his career and also how much he seems to love working at Givaudan (which sounds like a great place to work indeed!). I am in the US, and I would love to win the Parfums Del Rae sample set.

  • leathermountain says:

To be honest, in the popular press, the large fragrance companies are often presented as somewhat suffocating to a creative perfumer’s career. I do appreciate Vasnier’s alternate view — and the idea in general that it can be rewarding to work on many different projects at a large organization, and to leave the administration to others — and what sounds like real enjoyment in his work at Givaudan.

I’m tickled by the Palisander story, his obvious and well-deserved pride, and also funny situation of finding that the first try was the best. I think this might also be my favorite Vasnier scent, but I can’t ever be sure since there are so many!

Next up, I’d like to try Eau Divine. Please enter me for that in the draw. Thank you!

  • I like quite a few of M. Vasnier’s fragrances. Mythique in particular is a favorite. And L’ame Soeur is another. I enjoyed learning about his training. It was interesting to read about his classmates! I also appreciated his frankness about the changes in perfumery and the destruction of the classics. I’m in the US and I would choose L’etre Aime Femme.

  • I was impressed with Mr. Vasnier’s dedication to becoming a perfumer. That kind of focus on a career path has always been foreign to me (I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up – and I’ve long been an adult) and I admire people who can set a career goal and really work hard for it.
I was also surprised at how he seems to view working in mainstream fragrance as more of a pleasure than I would have thought. I very much enjoy several of the mainstream scents he has worked on.
I live in the US and would love to try the Parfums Del Rae sample set as I have yet to sniff any. Thank you.

  • christinal says:

Great article. I love his description of the good old days of perfumery! My favorite creation by Vasnier is l’homme sage. I’d really like to try l’ame souer. I live in the US.

  • Valentine girl says:

I really enjoyed reading about Yann’s scent memories of his childhood in Brittany; the food, the rocky beaches, and the glorious garden of his parents! A close friend of mine is also from Brittany, the town of Concarneau. She is an incredible crepe maker and her kitchen always smells like buckwheat crepes & gateau breton! I have always wanted to try any of the Arquiste perfumes that Yann has created; especially Etrong (+Etrong acqua), Anima Dulcis & Aleksandr. I have also been dying to try Wit from DelRae after reading the review post on Cafleurebon not too long ago and being entranced by the daphne cneorum note, so my choice would be the Parfums DelRae sampler set. Thanks for a lovely post and draw opportunity. USA resident.

  • It is amazing how many wonderful fragrances Yann has been involved with. Aldehyde 44 is my favorite on his resume. In the US here – thanks for the draw.

  • Jennifer witt says:

I found interesting reading about the impact Msr Vasnier’s Breton childhood had on his desire to become a creator of scents. The one I’d really like to try is Delrae Wit — please enter me in the draw for the Parfums Delrae sample set. I live in the US.

  • WOW…. A child of Brittany with such fantastic scent memories… Can you imagine the perfume that filled the air from his parents garden along with the cow and pig manure. A fan of Coco myself and oh yes of 19! What a list of accomplishments and so great to see his creativity influenced in such unique ways and with such diverse clients. Santal Blush is a favorite of mine. Would love L’etre Aime for her. I am in the US. Thanks for the opportunity.. You rock, Yann 😉

  • I was interested to read about the trajectory of Yann’s career. I love all the house of Divine’s perfumes that I have smelled, and own L’Infante and L’Ame Souer. I would choose L’Etre Am for Her. I am in the US

  • What in incredibly focused young man he is. My favourite Vasnier is Le Labo’s Aldehyde 44 and I live in the EU.

  • My favorite scent by Yann Vasnier is a tie between Aleksandr and Anima Dulcis. I would be most excited to win the DelRae sample set, and I’m in the US.

  • I think Bang is good, there’s a long list of things he has done. Anima Dulcis is interesting and the DelRae’s.
I find it interesting he managed to work with his idol Caron, always lovely to read about dreams coming true.
I’d like to win L’homme de cœur as the man himself seems to recommend it. I’m in the EU, ty

  • julesinrose says:

I really enjoy Monsieur Vasnier’s enthusiasm. I particularly enjoyed this quote, which shows me how much he enjoys the process “I still am the most excited just after the briefing, when I start my ideas, bold, strong, hopeful, before days and months and sometimes years of polishing all the rough edges away.”

Delrae WIt is my favorite thus far. But I’d LOVE to try a number of the Divine fragrances, but if I won my choice would be L’Homme Infini. Thanks for the fabulous drawing!

  • Fazal Cheema says:

wow, Vasnier has one common opinion with me. I am also a huge huge fan of Francoise Caron and many of my favorite fragrances have been created by her such as Cuiron, L’Ombre Rose, Omar Sharif Pour Femme, and Esada…my favorite Vasnier creation is by Divine which i also own..I also love DelRae’s Bois D Paradise and have two bottles of it but have yet to smell Vasnier’s creation for DelRae. I am in the US

  • Yann has created several of my favorite perfumes but I cannot recall which ones. I do like the CdG Rose, so that’s one. Id like to win the Divine and I am in the US.

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

I found his childhood memories and his educational background fascinating. What a beautiful place to grow up! I really would like to try his “beloved baby” Bang. I live in the US and would choose the Parfums DelRae sample set.

  • Oops, forgot to say I would choose the bottle of Divine by divine perfume — it is one of my favourites!

  • Elizabeth T. says:

“…the aromas of salt, butter, crepes, caramel, and homemade fruit jams that I loved…” What a lovely article. Thank you for a peek into the life of this talented perfumer. I would choose L’Homme de Couer EDP as iris is my favorite… I’m in the USA, thank you!

  • Love divine says:

    Is he single? Only kidding.
What a life Yann Vasnier had led and the notable perfumers he works with …wow!
At such a young age to catalog 3000 perfumes by category and nose is impressive. He has created such wonderful perfumes and I love Bang!
From his childhood in Brittany to meeting, shopping and creating Divine Perfumes is truly incredible.
Arquiste is a favorite line if mine especially Alexandr
My choice if I would be so fortunate is Divine LHomme de couer
    With l’Ame Souer close behind
I love divine perfumes and am in the USA

  • I enjoyed reading about Yann’s first fragrance, done in one try and with just 12 ingredients. That’s fascinating.
My favorite creation is, DelRae Wit which I just smelled this week. 🙂
My pick for the draw is L’Homme de Couer EDP. USA

  • d3m0lici0n says:

What an amazing article, I love his childhood memories, such an amazing environment to grow up. He is still really young and to have Francoise Caron as a mentor! Wow!!!! My favorites are the ones he created for Arquiste : Anima Dulcis and Aleksndr
I am in the US and would love to win Divine L’Homme Coueur.
    Thanks.

  • My favourite Vasnier is L’Etre Aime Femme but having just sampled Wit, that may take over. As i already own that one, I would go for L’Homme de Coeur. I’m in the UK. Many thanks

  • Oh my. What a fabulous interview! I am in LOVE with M. Vasnier’s Infanta en Fleur for Arquiste! It has a lovely “old soul” to it and drapes me in expensive French soap-iness. I’m astounded at the access to horticulture and amazing gardens he had growing up in his family. Someone from that family HAD to go into perfumery, as I’m glad it was him! The perfumers he has worked with and other he had as classmates…what names! He has definitely been in excellent company. I would love to try any of the Divine perfumes but I believe the one is most love would be L’Ame Soeur. An excellent read and thank you for the generous giveaway. 🙂

  • What an incredible profile! I loved reading about Yann’s memories of the scents of his favorite childhood foods. I would love to try Divine and am in the U.S.

  • I was fascinated to learn that M. Vasnier is already thinking about the next generation of Vasniers in perfumery. Of the few of his scents I’ve tried, my favorites so far are Donna Karan Gold and Arquiste Anima Dulcis. I’m in the US, and if I were lucky enough to win, I’d choose Divine Eau Divine edp.

  • what a great interview! i loved hearing about the scenes and scents of mr vasnier’s idyllic childhood the most.. his method of describing it is so evocative. my favorite of his perfumes – definitely delrae mythique so far although i haven’t tried all of his large repetoire!

    I am in the US.

  • 12 year old boy interested in perfumes – this is so brave and sweet)
I really love Palisander from Red series. And I wish to try Aleksander by Arquiste.
My choice as international reader is L’etre Ame for Her.
    Thanks for the draw!

  • I found it most refreshing how he sees working in Givaudan a good thing instead of the black&white view of many perfume enthusiasts that big companies = bad. Yann Vasnier is without question my favourite perfumer, I own several of his creations: SixScents Series 3 “M” (Ohne titel), Sixscents Series 2 “Ende/Anfang” (Damir Doma), Arquiste’s Anima Dulcis and Aleksandr (waiting excitedly for the upcoming Architect’s club), Bang and a couple of perfumes not listed in this article. At the top of my list are the perfumes for SixScents, I own back up bottles for both of those and the “Ende/Anfang” is my absolute favourite. If I win in the draw I’ll go for Divine L’homme de cœur. I’m in the EU.

  • What a fascinating read! I love how Yann was inspired by all the wonderful scents from his childhood. What would I give to have such an olfactory experience. I haven’t had much experience with Yann’s scents before, although I have sniffed them before. Aldehyde 44 and Anima Dulcis were pretty interesting. I would love to win a bottle of L’Homme de Coeur. I’m in the US. Thanks so much!

  • Ifi Genial says:

Everything about Mr. Vasnier’s is really interesting to read from his early childhood memories till his educational background and the fact that he put into realization all of his dreams and aspirations with the creation of such lovely perfumes.
I hope to have the chance to experience Divine Eau Divine, L’Ame Souer, and L’etre Ame for Her in case I win.
I live in EU (Greece) and I thank you both for this lovely interview and draw.

  • Yann Vasnier is a fascinating person, and a gifted perfumer. It is interesting to read how the scented experiences influenced him from his early childhood. I absolutely loved the garden of his parents. And not many children start to have such a strong hobby in perfumes at the age of 12…
I am very curious to smell the perfumes from Arquiste and del Rae, but they are not imported in my country.
I smelled more of the mainstram fragrances created by him and I can say that they stand off the crowd, in the best sense of word.
I sniffed a few perfumes from Divine and I definitely love L’Ame Soeur – of course I would like to win it! I live in Romania – E.U.
Thank you for the great opportunity!

  • Well, it seems all roads lead to Rome… deer, perfume. From studies in Maths and Physics a perfumer? There is still hope for the rest of us… just kidding. My favourite creation from mr.Vasnier so far surprisingly would have to be Ende/Anfang for six scents series. It is a rich balsamic oriental like they don’t make them anymore. I say surprising cause I admire all his creations for Arquiste and yet somehow this little known natural perfume and I met and it was love at first sight.

  • I liked the childhood part. The growing up in France, and the proximity to gardens at home, and Yann’s scent memories of certaind foods and the outdoors.
I enjoy wearing Marc Jacobs Bang. I would love to win here, L’Homme Infini. U.S. ty

  • I loved hearing about the “golden days” of perfumery when he first started – smoking in the office, tasting civet…! I absolutely love Mythique and own a bottle, but have yet to try Coup de Foudre, Panache, or Wit. I would be very excited to win the Delrae sample set. Thanks for the draw.

perfumer or not, our early scent memories are really strong. Vive la Bretagne, vives les Bretons! I’m loving Wit and I also love Gourmandises. I’m in the US and would love to win thee Parfums DelRae sample set.

  • I loved reading about how Yann Vasnier’s interest in niche perfume began at the age of twelve! And also, his fascination with all things Chanel. I can relate! He worked very hard to get to where he is today. My favorite of his is Keiko Mecheri Gourmandises. I’m in the U.S. and L’etre Ame for Her would be my choice.

  • I love Wit and would be very excited to try his other DelRae creations. I live in the U.S.

WHat a good looking man! I am amazed that such a young person wanted to become a perfumer, and pursued education in so many different areas. I would love to try “etre aime for women-I live in Canada, and that would be the one I would choose:)

  • Great draw – thank you!
    I am in EU.
It was interesting to learn that Yann Vasnier’s first fragrance ever was Palisander et Rose for Comme des Garcons, done in one try! I like Oh Lola!, but I really want to sniff the whole range of Arquiste and Divine – I haven’t tried them at all!
My choice is L`etre Aime Femme Divine for women.

  • I love how he sticks up for his commercial work!
I have wanted to try L`Etre Aime for Her for ages, so that is my pick.

I am in the EU. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I agree with Eleni in her comment above. My budget (and career) doesn’t allow me to purchase things that I can’t realistically wear everyday around new people. So, when I look for a new fragrance, I look at perfumers who do both commercial and niche things. I respect the artistry of someone who can walk in both worlds. This is why I love my bottle of L’homme infini.

For the draw, I would love to try his L’homme de coeur! Thanks! I’m in the US

  • What an enthusiasm and what big love for his work he shows! I’m fascinated! I am in Germany, and I would love to win the L’Homme Infini

  • I am fascinated that he was so drawn to perfume at an early age & spent time developing relationships with perfumers. I own several of his works & would cherish a signed bottle of Aimee Femme or Souer. His Femme was my introduction to niche and holds a special place in my heart for sure. Love his work for Divine & DelRae.
